As the second-largest grocery distributor in the United States, C&Sknows a few things about getting food to people.

But we also realize that people cannot live by bread alone. Hope,compassion and a helping hand can be just as critical as a hot meal.That’s why caring and sharing with others is an integral part of whatwe do.

Each year, C&S Wholesale Grocers donates huge quantities of food tocommunity pantries, food kitchens and relief organizations, making usone of the nation’s top food donors. We also help fund hundreds ofcivic, charitable and community organizations—from well-knowngroups like United Way to small, innovative programs with more heartthan cash. When it comes to volunteering, C&S employees give theirtime and energy to a wide variety of community organizations.

Any company can make a profit. But not every company can make adifference. At C&S, we do.

Q:How did C&S become involvedin corporate giving and communityinvolvement?

RC: Community involvement and corporategiving have been core activities of C&Ssince 1974, when I first started workingwith my father. Back then we were a smallcompany and not making much money, butwe still gave generously to United Wayand we always matched our employees’contributions. As my father used to say,“If we can’t do it, who can?”

So that’s how it started, with United Way. Asfor our food donations, that seemednatural. We ship a billion cases a year, andwe always have food products that aren’tsaleable for some reason—but are still goodand nutritious. So we donate that food tocommunity kitchens and food banks. We’vebeen doing this since 1981, and each yearour donations have increased. Preventinghunger is now one of our company’s majorcorporate causes.

Q: How have your personal values to“give back” led to the good works ofC&S in the company’s communities?

RC: I guess I was just brought up that way.And you know, all of us are only here for ashort period of time, so it seems to me thatif we can do something to help people thenwe should.

Q: What are the most rewardingaspects of the C&S communityinvolvement program? What are youand C&S employees most proud of?

RC: I think that we’re all proudest when wehelp our own communities. For instance, lastyear, when I was on vacation during the Kat-rina hurricane, I got a voice mail from awoman whose husband is a driver for C&S.She said, “Mr. Cohen, there’s a home onthe Gulf Coast for five hundred children withspecial needs that’s in serious trouble. Theydon’t have water, they don’t have diapersand nobody seems to be able to do any-thing. Can you help?”

I thought for a minute, then I called thewarehouse manager and said, “Let’s senda truckload of water and sanitary supplies.”It was a lifesaver for those children and theircaretakers.

That’s the kind of thing C&S likes to do—to respond quickly and to bring what peoplereally need. When 9-11 happened, we werethe first to arrive at Ground Zero with waterand power bars for the rescue workers. Andafter Hurricane Katrina struck, we were firston the scene with ice and water. We didwhat the U.S. Government couldn’t do.

Q: Often philanthropists can pointto a role model who shaped theirphilosophy of giving. Are there anyindividuals like this in your life?

RC: I had two role models, actually.There’s my father, who always believed incharitable giving, and then there was mygreat grandfather Benjamin Russell. Evenwhen he didn’t have much, he’d dig in hispocket and find something to give people.He came over from Russia in the 1890sso he understood what it was like tostruggle. He used to say, “In Russia, wehad nothing; in this country, we haveso much.”

Q: In your opinion, what is it aboutC&S that inspires employees most?

RC: I think what really excites ouremployees is that they can make adifference in their communities, and thatC&S does too.

Q: Given your busy schedule, areyou able to get personally involvedin any community or charitableprograms?

RC: I travel a great deal, so much ofwhat I do is supportive of our overallgiving efforts. I make frequent visits to C&Swarehouses and to the food banks wesupport. And recently I spoke at a UnitedWay fundraiser to encourage othercompanies to lend their support.

Q: Should more companies getinvolved in helping civic andcharitable organizations? Why?

RC: Yes. I think more companies shouldget involved in corporate and communitygiving. The impact you can have iswonderful to see. I think it gives everyonein the company a lot of pride.

Q: When you think of your heroes—people who made a difference orwho are still making a differencetoday—who comes to mind?

RC:Well, I grew up reading about AlbertSchweitzer: he and Mother Teresa madea deep impression on me. I must havecommunicated that to my daughter,because she spent six months in Africahelping with a relief project. My wife Janalso does a lot of charity work in the

community. People just love her.But I would say that the people who

inspire me most are the ordinary, everydaypeople whose lives are just as busy asmine, but who take the time to make adifference. They’re heroes to me.

Hunger is real, and hunger hurts.

In 2006 America’s Second Harvest, the Nation’sFood Bank Network, honored C&S with theirGrocery Distributor of the Year Award. Thisaward recognizes C&S for its donation of over10 million pounds of food last year, and for itsongoing work in alleviating hunger. C&S ispleased to be recognized by America’s SecondHarvest, and even more pleased to support theircompassionate mission.

C&S named Grocery Distributor of the Yearby America’s Second Harvest

Even here in the U.S., millions of people—over half of them children andseniors—are hungry or malnourished.Many others are “food-insecure,” whichmeans their next meal is far from certain.

As the nation’s second largest grocerywholesaler, C&S is in a strong positionto make a difference for America’shungry citizens.

And we do.

Each year C&S gives generously to fighthunger, making us one of America’stop 20 food donors. Our donations aremade through America’s Second Harvest,

The Nation’s Food Bank Network. Thisis the largest domestic hunger-relieforganization in the United States witha network of more than 200 memberfood banks and food-rescueorganizations.

The America's Second Harvest Networksecures and distributes nearly 2 billionpounds of food and grocery productsannually, serving more than 25 millionlow-income hungry people. C&S isproud to be a partner of America’sSecond Harvest. Almost every day, wegladly donate tons of food from ourwarehouses to their national network.

Each week, nearly 25 million peoplein America receive food assistance. Arecent study by America’s SecondHarvest reports:

They are young…36% of the hungry in America are childrenunder 18 years old.

And old…10% are over 65 years old.

They are diverse…40% are white, 38% black, 17% Hispanic,and the rest are from other ethnic groups.

Many are working…36% of households seeking foodassistance include at least oneemployed adult.

Most are poor…68% have incomes below the officialfederal poverty level.

They face hard choices…42% of clients served by America’sSecond Harvest report having to choosebetween paying for food and paying forutilities or heating fuel.

35% had to choose between food andpaying their rent or mortgage.

32% had to choose between food andmedicine or medical care.

Many are sick…30% of households have at leastone member in poor health.

And some are homeless.12% of the hungry in Americado not have a place to live.

Food Bank of the Hudson ValleyCornwall-on-Hudson, NY

Goal: Find 100,000 additional poundsof fresh, healthy food

How C&S helped: The Food Bank ofthe Hudson Valley serves 360 agenciesand over 77,000 people, but needs morefood donations to continue serving itscommunities. With funding provided byC&S, the Food Bank was able to hire atemporary fresh produce coordinator whoidentified new, permanent sources of food.

United Way Community Food BankBirmingham, AL

Goal: Improve warehouse lighting toboost productivity and morale

How C&S helped: The 57,000 squarefoot warehouse of the United WayCommunity Food Bank should have beena happy place—after all, it was filledwith donated food for hungry families.However, with one-third of the lightsnon-functional, working in the poorly-litfacility was difficult. So C&S stepped inwith funding for bright new lighting fixtures—which boosted productivity by 29,000pounds of food packed each month!

Food Bank of the PiedmontMauldin, SC

Goal: Expand refrigerator space for morefresh, healthy food

How C&S helped: Fresh foods such asproduce, dairy items and meat are vital togood nutrition. But the Food Bank of thePiedmont did not have enough refrigeratorspace to supply their clientele of 150,000people. Thanks in part to C&S, the FoodBank was able to double their coolercapacity, and can now accept and storemore perishable food.

FoodshareBloomfield, CT

Goal: Recover fruits and vegetables fromthe Connecticut Regional Market

How C&S helped: Perfectly edible fruitsand vegetables that would otherwise bethrown away at the end of each day bythe CT Regional Market are collectedand repacked by Foodshare. Thisamounts to over 3.7 million poundsof produce a year. C&S’s support of theProduce Recovery Program results inimmediate access to donated produce,much of which is distributed by the“Mobile Foodshare” trucks to local publichousing complexes and other sites.

Food BankHonolulu, HI

Goal: Provide food to homeless people

How C&S helped: Hawaii can beparadise—but it has pockets of povertythat tourists never see. On Oahu’snorthern coast, many homeless people(including native Hawaiians) live on thebeach in tents or in cars and do not havemoney or food. With support from C&S,the food bank regularly brings free, freshproduce to the poorest of the poor.

Lehigh Valley Food BankAllentown, PA

Goal: Provide assistance to 19 localhunger agencies

How C&S helped: A grant from C&S willbe used to support 19 food shelves andmeal sites in or around Bethlehem, Pennsyl-vania where our company has a new distri-bution center. Over the course of 12months, it will result in approximately150,000 lbs. of free food to be distributedto families and individuals in need.

Chattanooga Area Food BankChattanooga, TN

Goal: Support the food bank’scommunity gardening program for low-income seniors and disabled citizens.

How C&S helped: For low-incomesenior citizens living in an inner-cityhousing complex, a vegetable gardenestablished by the Chattanooga FoodBank has brought many benefits. For22 years, the garden has been animportant gathering place for theelders, stimulating social interaction,encouraging self-reliance, andbeautifying the neighborhood. Thegarden includes a greenhouse foryear-round growing, and five raisedwheelchair-accessible garden plots.Support from C&S brought the green-house back to prime operatingcondition and paid for suppliesto keep the garden growing.

Food Bank of Western MassachusettsHatfield, MA

Goal: Support the Food Bank’s“Door-to-Door” program

How C&S helped: For years, homelessshelters and soup kitchens in westernMassachusettes had to travel to the FoodBank’s warehouse with a van or car to pickup supplies—a process that often limited theamount and type of food they could take.C&S is helping fund the “Door-to-Door”program which sends refrigerated FoodBank trucks into communities to effectivelyreach soup kitchens, homeless shelters andother food assistance agencies.

Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food BankHauppauge, NY

Goal: Break the hunger cycle by fundingskills programs for women and at-risk youth

How C&S helped: Two groups on LongIsland are battling food insecurity: low-income young single mothers and at-risk

students. The mothers lack resources andjob skills, and the students are living on theedge, close to dropping out, using drugs,joining gangs, or getting in trouble with thelaw. To break the cycle of poverty, the foodbank asked C&S for financial assistanceto support free workforce developmentprograms. Enrollees learn specific job skillsto increase their employability and self-sufficiency, and reduce their reliance onfood assistance.

Capital Area Food BankWashington, DC

Goal: Support Kids Café programs inPrince George’s County, MD

How C&S helped: Kids Café is a freeafterschool program that provides healthysnacks and often, a full, hot meal forchildren from low-income families who maynot have a nutritious dinner available athome. The program also offers homeworkassistance, mentoring and instruction inthe basics of good nutrition. A grant fromC&S allows the Capital Area Food Bank toprovide training for staff and to restock fiveCafé kitchens.

At C&S we know that nourishment comesfrom more than just food. That’s why wesupport programs that focus on communityservices, health care and children. Hereare just some of the many programs we areproud to support.

Confronting childhood cancer

Kids who are battling cancer are amongthe bravest people around. They areconfronted with pain, medical tests,operations, hair loss, and often long

hospital stays. To help children withcancer, their caregivers and the re-searchers who are searching for acure, C&S holds an annual charitygolf outing. In 2006, proceedswent to The Children’s Hospital atDartmouth in Lebanon, NH, TheDana-Farber Cancer Institute inBoston, and the Hole in the WallGang Camp in Ashford, Connecti-cut. To date, C&S and our gener-ous vendors have “teed up” anddonated over $1.4 million towardthe cause.

United Way

United Way’s mission is to “mobilize thecaring power of communities.” As thenation’s number one community-basedfundraiser, United Way is able to makesignificant and positive changes incommunities and people’s lives. With itsuniquely local approach, United Wayfocuses on the issues that mean the mostto communities. This includes programsthat strengthen families, improve accessto health care, help at-risk children andyouth, and improve self-sufficiency.

First Book

Do you rememberthe magic of your firstbook—how it openeda world of imagina-

tion and possibilities? That memory was theinspiration for First Book, a national, nonprofitorganization that gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read andown their first books. Since its founding in1992, First Book has distributed more than 40million books to children across the country.

At C&S, we understand how much “a book ofmy very own” means to a child and howimportant reading skills are to growing minds.That’s why we are proud to sponsor First BookLiterary Registries and free book programs inseven C&S communities.

C&S NationalChildren’s NutritionEducation Program

It’s ironic, but poor nutrition can lead tohunger and obesity, both significant problemsfor many of America’s children. C&S ishelping address both issues by providingfunding to America’s Second Harvestto launch two programs that will improvechildrens’ nutrition.

The first program will provide nutritioneducation tool kits containing lesson plans,staff training materials/manuals, posters,recipe books, aprons and more to teach kidsnutrition basics and healthful cooking. Thesetool kits will be distributed at more than 1,200Kids Cafés serviced by the food banks ofAmerica’s Second Harvest.

Reducing our footprint

At C&S we strive to make the world ahealthier place to live in throughconservation and innovation.

Biodiesel and Smart Business:A Good Blend

At C&S, we’re experimenting with newtechnologies to reduce our environmentalfootprint. In 2006, C&S completed asuccessful pilot program using biodiesel fuelin 40 tractor trailers from our South Car-olina and Tennessee facilities. Made from a20% blend of soy and diesel,this alternative fuel decreases bothemissions and costs.

The Green Team

“The Green Team” is C&S’s own corporateconservation program, designed to makeall of our warehouses andoffices as energy-efficientand environmentallyresponsible as possible.From power-smart lightingto paperwork reductionprograms, the C&S GreenTeam actively works toconserve resources andreduce waste and pollution.

Supporting higher education

In 2006, C&S focused on education, bygiving support to two excellent centers ofhigher education.

Saint Joseph’s UniversityPhiladelphia, PA

The Academy of Food Marketing at SaintJoseph’s University is one of the leadingincubators for professionals in the grocery

and food business. In 2006, the schoolhonored C&S CEO Rick Cohen with aspecial citation, at a dinner that raisedover $1 million for the school and itseducational foundation.

“I want to thank the Academy ofFood Marketing for helping train ourfuture leaders,” said Rick Cohen at thepresentation.

Keene State CollegeKeene, NH

When Keene State College recently openedthe doors to its new science center, it markedthe beginning of a new chapter for thecollege. With 32 research and teaching labs,students and faculty now have access tosome of the most high-tech equipment inNew England. C&S was proud to be a majorsupporter of the project.

Youth Horticultural ProjectBrattleboro, VT

Goal: Provide meaningful workand leadership development skills toat-risk youth

How C&S helped:

Sunshine, fresh air, satisfying work andmentoring are the key ingredients ofthis youth education and developmentprogram. Teens learn personal respon-sibility, teamwork and communicationskills at a real working farm. Theorganic vegetables they grow aredonated to food banks and sold atthe local farmers’ market. Theseyoung farmers even hold nutrition andcooking classes for the community.C&S is proud to support this creativeand successful program.

Congressional Hunger CenterWashington, DC

Goal: Develop new leaders in thefight to eradicate hunger

How C&S helped:

The Congressional Hunger Center isa leadership training organizationwhose mission is to develop the nextgeneration of activists in the globalfight against hunger. The programincludes intensive skills training andcommunity service on the “front lines”of hunger. C&S believes strongly inthe work of the Congressional HungerCenter, and provided funding that willallow this year’s Hunger Fellows toreceive additional leadership training.

The C&S Hunger Leadership InitiativeThe aim of the C&S Hunger Leadership Initiative is to nurture and develop a newgeneration of leaders with a fresh perspective and commitment to addressing theissue of hunger in America. To achieve this goal, C&S is actively funding andworking with a variety of local and national organizations who share this leader-ship vision. This year, C&S supported two organizations dedicated to helpingyoung people understand and lead the fight against hunger.

Energetic, involved, and tireless. Threewords that sum up what makes NicoleEllis so effective, both on the job, and inher community. Nicole, a C&S humanresources representative, devoted over200 hours last year to delivering foodfor the New Day Tabernacle Food Pantryto elderly and homebound people.

“So many people are hungry thesedays through no fault of their own,”

says Nicole. “I wanted to do somethingto help them.”

The C&S panel that selected Nicoleas Volunteer of the Year commendedher leadership, initiative and desire tomake a difference in people’s lives.And she does make a difference for somany people—not just because of thefood she brings, but also because ofher warmth and kindness.

Make a Difference Days

Make a Difference Day is a new traditionat C&S. For the past four years our Associateshave turned out to help their neighbors andcommunities, volunteering on a wide range ofworthwhile projects. From painting walls andbuilding shelves to harvesting vegetables anddelivering food, C&S Associates are indeedmaking a difference.Some of our 2005-06 projects included:

• Harvesting vegetables at the Capital AreaFood Bank’s organic farm in Maryland

Association for the Preventionof Sickle Cell Anemia, Inc.Aberdeen, MDGoal: Support for ongoing research

How C&S helped: Sickle Cell Anemiais a hereditary blood disorder that affectsover 80,000 Americans, causing pain,tissue damage and sometimes stroke.C&S Aberdeen provided support for theongoing search for a cure.

KidSAVE International, Inc.Washington, DCGoal: Support the Weekend Miraclesfamily-based permanence program

How C&S helped: KidSAVE is a volunteerorganization working to find permanent,loving homes and families for older childrencurrently in orphanages and foster care.A mini-grant from C&S affiliate CollingtonServices will help fund the WeekendMiracles Program, whose goal is to helpfind permanent homes for 40 children inthe Washington, D.C. area.

Mission of Mercy, Inc.Harrisburg, PAGoal: Free health clinic for uninsuredpeople

How C&S helped: A mini-grant fromC&S Harrisburg helped Mission of Mercy,a free health clinic, continue its efforts toprovide over 1,300 patient visits, dispenseover 3,300 prescriptions and performmore than 350 dental procedures.

Pinson Valley Youth AssociationBirmingham, ALGoal: Replacement of stolenfootball equipment.

How C&S helped: More than 200children participate in the Pinson ValleyYouth Association football program. In2006, this program suffered a majorsetback when all of their sports equipment,valued at $6,000, was stolen. Throughour affiliate, Birmingham Logistics, C&Smade a donation towards the purchase ofnew football equipment, helping put thePinson Indians back in the game.

United States VeteransInitiative—HawaiiKapolei, HI

Goal: Help Veterans Initiative increasemeal preparation capacity

How C&S helped: A mini-grant fromHawaii Logistics helped the Veterans Initia-tive buy needed supplies and equipment forits Kalaeloa facility, which serves 300 mealsto 100 homeless military veterans daily.

Students of Marlboro CollegeKatrina Relief, Brattleboro, VTGoal: Support for student-led hurricanerelief trip

How C&S helped: In March, 31Marlboro College students devoted theirspring break to helping residents ofsouthern Mississippi and New Orleansclean up and repair homes devastated byHurricane Katrina. A mini-grant from C&Sin Brattleboro made sure that the studentshad plenty of water and snacks to bolstertheir energy and share with those in need.

Miracles in Motion, Keene, NHGoal: Therapeutic horseback ridingprogram for disabled children

How C&S helped: A mini-grant fromC&S headquarters in Keene helped supportthe Miracles in Motion therapeutic ridingprogram. Disabled individuals are offereda rare opportunity to enjoy fresh air andsunshine free of wheelchairs and crutches.

Southeast Clergy Council HungerCenter, Bedford, OHGoal: Support for growing emergencyfood assistance program

How C&S helped: The Southeast ClergyCouncil Hunger Center provides emergencyfood assistance to over 600 families in theMaple Heights, Oakwood Village andWalton Hills areas. A mini-grant from ourErie Logistics, OH facility will help theHunger Center continue to meet thegrowing needs of the community.

How C&S helped: A Fresno Logistics mini-grant provided support for the diverse groupof student athletes who make up the age 12-and-under girls softball team. Team membersare from a variety of elementary and juniorhigh schools in Fresno/Clovis and theCentral Valley.

Habitat for Humanityof Greater ChattanoogaChattanooga, TNGoal: Ongoing homebuilding projectsfor low-income families

How C&S helped: Habitat for Humanityof Greater Chattanooga builds simple,decent and affordable homes for low-incomefamilies. Houses are sold to the families at noprofit and with no interest. C&S WholesaleServices at Chattanooga made a donationto help support their efforts.

Chester Police Benevolent AssociationChester, NYGoal: Expanded self-defense program forwomen

How C&S helped: For two years, the C&SChester facility has pledged to help keeppeople of their community safe by providingfunding for a Rape Aggression Defense pro-gram for women. In 2005, a mini-grant wasused to pay the registration fees for severalwomen who could not otherwise afford to at-tend. This year’s mini-grant provided fundingso the program can expand to cover a widergeographic area.

Friends of Reedy River, Inc.Greenville, SCGoal: Ongoing cleanup and protectionof the Reedy River

How C&S helped: The Reedy River hasbeen called the most polluted river in SouthCarolina. C&S Wholesale Services inMauldin made a donation to the Friends ofReedy River to improve and protect the waterand habitat for future generations.

Very Special Arts California (VSA)Sacramento, CAGoal: Art programs for children withspecial needs

How C&S helped: Sacramento Logisticsawarded a mini-grant to VSA to help uniteover 3,000 regular and special educationstudents in art projects that provide learningand growth experiences.

International Institute of New JerseyJersey City, NJGoal: Immigrant workforce development

How C&S helped: For the past two years,C&S Metro has supported the InternationalInstitute of New Jersey in their mission to helpimmigrants make smooth and successfultransitions to the U.S. workforce. A mini-grant is helping to fund crucial employmentsupport, including work experience andreadiness assessments, ESL and job skillstraining, and post-placement follow-up.

Civil Air Patrol—Catskill Mountain GroupHighland, NYGoal: Purchase of GPS unit for foul weatherair rescue missions

How C&S helped: C&S Chester awardeda mini-grant for the purchase of a GlobalPositioning System unit with NEXRAD weatherand terrain data. The new device will helpvolunteer air crews safely perform emergencyair rescue missions in bad weather.

Friends of the Soldiers’ HomeHolyoke, MAGoal: Purchase momentum recliner for thehospice unit

How C&S helped: A C&S Westfield mini-grant provided funding for the purchase ofa special recliner for the hospice unit. Thissleeper chair allows family members ofveterans to spend time with their lovedones during the final hours of life.
