Several years before he was elected Baton Rouge’s Mayor,Kip Holden noticed something amiss when he saw hisbrother, Larry, at a reception.
“He was a little off-balance. He almost missed his seat,”Holden said. “I asked, ‘Is something wrong with you?’And he said, ‘I’m all right.’ I said, ‘You really need to goand get checked by a doctor to make sure you’re allright.’”
Tests produced bad news — Holden’s brother had coloncancer that had spread to his liver. He died about sixmonths later in July 1996.
“I’m firmly convinced that had he been screened earlier, for the most part I feel he would be alive today,” Holdensaid. “At least he would not have died of colon cancer.”
Unable to have avoided that tragedy, Holden would liketo prevent more like it. So, when he decided to participatein the United States Conference of Mayors’ CancerAwareness Program, he put his own spin on it. Thisyear’s emphasis begins this month with colorectal cancer, and the campaign will have a different focus each month.
“Colon cancer is the second most common cancer overalland third most common both in men and women
nationally and statewide,” said Lori McCallum, executivedirector of the Mary Bird Perkins C.A.R.E. Network.
“When colorectal cancers are detected at an early, localized stage, the (five-year) survival rate is 90percent,” McCallum said. “The tragedy is that so many ...

My PerspectiveThis year marks Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s 35thanniversary of service to the communities it serves – 1.4million residents throughout southeast Louisiana andbeyond. The Center remains the only independent,community-owned, nonprofit cancer treatment, educationand research system in the state providing its services foreveryone, regardless of ability to pay. Thank you to themany individuals, businesses, foundations and groups forthe important role you play in allowing Mary Bird Perkins
to lead the fight against cancer in Louisiana. A special thank you to the 2005Annual Giving Campaign volunteers, and the exceptionally generous donors, who together raised over $962,000 -- a new annual giving campaign record forthe Center.
2005 will be remembered as the year Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused thenation’s worst national disaster and a healthcare crisis unprecedented inAmerican history. Community support and hardworking staff enabled theCenter to serve as a resource for hundreds of cancer patients in need of help, assistance and resources.
The year 2005 also saw Mary Bird Perkins’ arsenal of treatment technology growwith the addition of TomoTherapy and the Center’s innovative academic andresearch partnership with Louisiana State University. This unique partnershipand the combined size and expertise of the Center’s team of six radiationoncologists, ten medical physicists and 50+ member staff of nurses, radiationtherapists and other healthcare professionals provide the backbone for one of themost advanced cancer treatment programs in the United States.
The early detection efforts of the C.A.R.E. Network have been greatly enhancedby the recent acquisition of the Early Bird, the only mobile medical clinic in thearea dedicated exclusively to comprehensive cancer screenings. East BatonRouge Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden recognized the importance ofearly detection. He also inaugurated his participation in the United StatesConference of Mayors’ Cancer Awareness Program by partnering with MBPCCduring March, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – the first of manymonthly cancer awareness initiatives the Mayor and the C.A.R.E. Network willbe working on together.
Helping to fund the C.A.R.E. Network’s mission are the Center’s premier fund-raising events, such as the upcoming Sprint Open presented by All StarAutomotive Group and LEMIC Insurance Company on April 27-30. Proceedsfrom the Sprint Open go directly to the patient services and community outreachprograms that make up the C.A.R.E. Network. The Sprint Open is Baton Rouge’sonly professional golf tournament. This is the 4th consecutive year the Tight LiesTour is making a stop in Louisiana’s Capital City. Please join us at The UniversityClub to watch these golf professionals hone their competitive skills whilepreparing for life on the PGA tour.
We remain grateful for your continued support.
Thank you.

“This year has been difficultfor our state,” beganLouisiana Attorney GeneralCharles C. Foti Jr., a NewOrleans native, addressingthose assembled for hispresentation to the C.A.R.E.Network in mid-December.“I’m here today to say thatlike hurricanes, if youevacuate early you’re betteroff. If you get checked for
cancer early, you can avoid majorproblems.” And with that, Fotipresented Mary Bird Perkins CancerCenter with a check for $100,000 forearly detection from the Office of theAttorney General.
“We are grateful for this incrediblygenerous gift,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO, Mary BirdPerkins Cancer Center. “This willenable us to expand our program andoffer more free cancer screenings topeople in southeast Louisiana.”
Foti explained to those assembled thata lot of thought went into deciding where the money would have thebiggest impact in the fight against cancer. “Mary Bird Perkins CancerCenter is renowned for its dedication to early detection,” he said. “Welooked at the area serviced by the Center and wanted to partner in theearly detection effort. We have the money and Mary Bird Perkins hasthe talent.”
Robert S. Greer Jr., chairman, Board of Directors, Mary Bird PerkinsCancer Center, thanked the Attorney General and his staff on behalfof the Center’s Board of Directors, its staff and the community.“Thank you for helping in the campaign for early detection as wefight against this terrible disease,” Greer said.
The $100,000 gift is a result of a $55 million settlement in a class actionlawsuit entered into by all 50 states against Bristol-Myers Squibbinvolving the cancer-fighting drug Taxol. Louisiana received a smallportion of that settlement, and the Attorney General’s office ischarged with distributing the funds.

... Mayor Continued from page 1people in the nation and in Louisiana are not screened regularly forcolorectal cancer. That’s why there is so much attention around that type ofcancer. It is not as widely embraced and promoted like breast cancer is, forexample.”
The March campaign included distributing colorectal cancer screening testsin Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes. Participants drop a piece oftissue into the toilet after three consecutive bowel movements. A colorchange in the tissue indicates blood in the stool.
In addition to producing public service announcements to heightenawareness, Holden promised Mary Bird Perkins that he would raise about$150,000 to help fund a second mobile medical clinic. The first such clinic, called the Early Bird, was dedicated on January 31, and Holden made hisannouncement at that ceremony. The mobile units cost about $300,000.
“I’m going to raise at least half and maybe more toward getting a secondunit,” Holden said. “Now there are a number of people who don’t have themeans to get by the hospital to get tested. Now you can actually take thetest to them all around the community. That is going to make a differencein the quality of life for many citizens in East Baton Rouge Parish.”
The prospect of having another excites McCallum, especially since hispledge was unexpected.
“It was totally a surprise out of the clear blue,” McCallum said. “So, wewere delighted and so pleased at his commitment to the health and well-being of the people in the community.”
The C.A.R.E. Network’s Early Bird, recently dedicated and now providingcommunity cancer screenings, was funded by grants from ExxonMobilBaton Rouge, The Charles M. and Mary D. Grant Foundation and The U.S.Department of Health and Human Services as requested by CongressmanRichard Baker and Senator Mary Landrieu.

The C.A.R.E. Network, intent upon providingincreased screening services to the medicallyunderserved and ultimately lowering cancermortality rates in its service area and beyond, nowhas the only mobile medical clinic in the areadedicated to comprehensive community cancerscreenings. The clinic on wheels, named the EarlyBird in reference to its mission of early detection, will expand free screenings directly into rural, remote communities that need them most. TheEarly Bird will hold in excess of 100 screenings thisyear, reaching approximately 4,000 people in theCenter’s 15-parish service region. In the short timesince its arrival, the Early Bird has also beenproviding breast cancer screenings in NewOrleans, where there are currently no screeningmammography services available to uninsuredwomen, and to Federal Emergency ManagementAgency (FEMA) trailer villages, to extend screeningservices to those hurricane evacuees as well.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the Delmont ServiceCenter in Baton Rouge on January 31st to officially dedicatethe Early Bird and to honor the donors who provided thefunding needed to purchase the mobile clinic.
ExxonMobil made a gift of $100,000, the largest singledonation to the project. Bruce H. March, manager,ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Refinery, said, “When we becameaware that lives could be saved with a screening clinic thatcould go to the people most in need, we knew we wanted tobe a part of making that vision a reality.”
Todd Stevens, Mary Bird Perkins president and CEO, saidthat at a cost of $325,000, the mobile medical clinic wouldnot have been possible without the generosity of donorswho, in addition to ExxonMobil, made the purchasepossible. They include The Charles M. and Mary D. GrantFoundation and the U. S. Department of Health and HumanServices, through the advocacy of Senator Mary Landrieuand Congressman Richard Baker.
Mary Bird Perkins Board of Directors Chairman Robert S.Greer Jr. thanked those donors who in 2005 madesignificant gifts to help provide programming support forthe mobile clinic – Amedisys Home Health Services; IreneW. and C.B. Pennington Foundation; Rubicon LLC;Louisiana Breast Cancer Task Force; Baton Rouge Area
Foundation; Mrs. Harry A. Johnson Jr. in memory of Dr.Margaret E. Johnson; Rotary Club of Baton RougeFoundation. Funding is also provided by unrestrictedannual support from the community.
East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip”Holden, Metro Councilman Charles Kelly (District 5) andState Senator Sharon Weston Broome (Senate District 15)participated in the exciting dedication event.
Stating that he lost his brother to colon cancer diagnosed ata late stage, Mayor Holden surprised and thrilled the crowdby announcing his pledge to raise $150,000 toward thepurchase of a second mobile clinic to expand the Center’searly detection efforts even further. “I believe that if mybrother had this early screening, he’d be here today. I wantto help as many people as possible get the vital screeningservices they need,” said Holden.
Commented Councilman Kelly, “We have a lot of folks innorth Baton Rouge who can’t drive miles to a screening. This clinic is going to make a big difference in the northBaton Rouge community.”
Senator Broome emphasized the importance of accessibilityas a key ingredient for effective healthcare. “What thismobile clinic offers to members of our community isaccessibility,” she said. “I’m convinced that the impact ofthe clinic will make a difference in so many lives.”

By day, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center uses advancedradiation therapy technology to treat patients with a varietyof cancers. By night, the Center becomes a laboratory, asmedical physics researchers who are part of a uniquecollaborative effort between MBPCC and LSU use“phantoms” rather than patients to search for better ways toemploy existing technology to safely eliminate cancer.
In 2004, Kenneth Hogstrom left M. D. Anderson CancerCenter in Houston after 25 years to establish theLSU/MBPCC collaboration, one of approximately 20medical physics graduate programs in the nation.
“A medical physicist is an individual who applies theprinciples of medicine. In doing that, there are three modes:educator, researcher and clinician. Here, at Mary Bird, ouractivities are somewhat integrated,” says Hogstrom, whoserves as chief of physics at Mary Bird and professor anddirector of the Medical Physics and Health Physics Programat LSU.
In the course of preparing the master’s students who comeinto the program with bachelor’s degrees in engineering orphysics to practice in the field, the program teaches theprinciples of medical physics and provides both clinical andresearch experience.
At Mary Bird, the medical physics faculty has partneredwith technology providers BrainLAB Inc. andTomoTherapy Inc. to pursue studies in image-guidedtherapy and a therapy that for some cancers could replacecombined x-ray and electron beam therapy, respectively. AtLSU, collaboration with Vanderbilt University and MXISystems is researching a new area, x-ray capture therapy.
At this stage, testing is not conducted on patients. “Here,we are trying to study how current technology can best beused in the clinical setting. When a company comes outwith new technology, they haven’t explored all the ways itcan be used.
“We’re evaluating image-guided technology to see howaccurately its radiation therapy can be delivered. Forexample, we know we can deliver radiation to a tumor withan accuracy of within three millimeters; we think we can getwithin one millimeter; but we’re not sure about a half amillimeter. Our research allows us to find out.”
Besides running the data through different scenarios andcalculations in the MBPCC laboratory, the team adaptsequipment to explore its theories and builds phantompatients out of plastic or bone-line materials.
The studies often take two years from design throughcompletion. However, the benefits of melding the resourcesof private and public institutions to create a new benchmarkfor medical physics programs are already clear.
“Typically, the stronger research programs in medicalphysics are based at a university cancer center,” Hogstromexplains. “Ours is a unique model, a collaboration betweena freestanding cancer center and a university.”
Medical Physics
LSU and MBPCC have developed a nationally competitivemedical physics program. The joint research and academic venturepromises to deliver important biomedical research, improvedtreatments for patients and economic development opportunitiesfor the community. Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom (pictured), one of theworld’s foremost scholars in the area of medical physics, is leadingthe partnership.

Lee Killett Rayner Giving Back Matters
Lee Rayner’s move fromTexas back to BatonRouge, to be closer tofamily, turned out to be anintuitive one. Her mother-in-law was diagnosedwith brain cancer andRayner and her husband,Mark, were there to takeher to her treatments atMary Bird. “She alwaystalked about how muchshe loved the picture ofthe hot air balloons in the
ceiling,” said Rayner of her mother-in-law. “She’d say, ‘It’s a balloon day’when she was going for a treatment. She felt so good about the people sheencountered. There’s no way to put a price on the comfort she felt fromthe staff and volunteers. I couldn’t do anything for her, but they could.”
During that same time, Rayner’s mother was diagnosed with breastcancer and Rayner was there for her as well. “Every time we enteredthrough the front door, you could sense a special feeling. Mother wasalways impressed with that. So was I.”
Ironically, when both women’s treatments were completed, the Center’sOffice of Development called to ask Rayner if she would be interested involunteering to help with the Calling for a Cure Online & On-Air AuctionWeb site before the pending 2005 event. “I do the Bengal Belles Web site. That’s how they found me,” she laughed.
Rayner readily agreed to help the Development office. “There are waysthat anyone can help Mary Bird – with time, talent or money. Before thatphone call, I didn’t know which path I wanted to take. They decided forme,” she said with her trademark smile. At Rayner’s suggestion, a newsoftware platform from CMarket was incorporated into the Web site toprovide easier navigation as well as proxy bidding, a componentallowing bidders to stipulate the highest amount they were willing to payfor an item. With that option, bidders did not even have to be in town toparticipate. This software took the online auction to a new and excitinglevel and all of the upgrades added to the huge success of the event.
“It’s important to me to have a sense of community and not work in a silo,” saidRayner. “Mary Bird Perkins is the marquis of cancer care in our community. Wehave to help take care of it.”
