HYUNDAI — AN OVERVIEWHyundai vehicles provide customers a high level of contentand performance at an affordable price and demonstrateHyundai’s emergence as an auto manufacturer whose prod-ucts compete successfully in technology, quality, styling andrefinement with automobiles from around the world.

Hyundai sold its first car, a subcompact model, in the U.S. in1986. At the time, few Americans had ever heard of Hyundaior its products. Since that time, Hyundai has expanded andupgraded its product line in the U.S. and has gained valuableexperience in the competitive U.S. automobile market. Hyun-dai now markets a full line of vehicles from subcompacts toluxurious sedans.

HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANYThe Hyundai Group was founded in 1947 as Hyundai Engi-neering and Construction Co. by Ju-Yung Chung. HyundaiMotor Co., established in 1967, is the auto sales leader in theKorean domestic market and exports vehicles to 190 coun-tries worldwide.

Hyundai Motor Co. (“HMC”) operates the world’s largest inte-grated automobile manufacturing facility in Ulsan, on Korea’ssoutheast coast. In 1996 Hyundai opened the Namyang Tech-nology Research Center, one of eight research centers, which includes a complete testing facility with a 2.8-mile ovaltest track and a sophisticated aeroacoustic wind tunnel. Thatsame year, HMC began production at its state-of-the-art AsanPlant, located southwest of Seoul.

A LOOK BACK –HYUNDAI’S ENTRY INTO THE U.S. MARKETThe timing of Hyundai’s entry into the U.S. market in 1986was ideal. At that time most automobile manufacturers hadabandoned the entry-level market in favor of high-end, high-priced vehicles and that left a large void in the market. First-time car buyers such as college students and young familieswere not able to find adequate, value-equipped cars that mettheir needs, yet were priced within their economic means.

In February 1986, Hyundai launched its subcompact Excelmodel in the U.S. market. Customer response was immediate;in just seven months Hyundai Motor America had sold its100,000th Excel. Total 1986 sales numbered 168,882 – an in-dustry record for an import car distributor in its first year.Hyundai sales averaged 1,431 units per dealer, another salesrecord. In 1987 Hyundai sales continued to soar reaching arecord 263,610 units.

What makes this sales performance all the more remarkableis that it was done with dealers located in only 31 of the 50states. In the early years, Hyundai concentrated its sales ef-forts primarily on the west and east coasts, as well as in thesouthern states. In 1987 Hyundai expanded into the centralportion of the United States, and today there are five regionsand more than 660 Hyundai dealerships nationwide. In thenear future, Hyundai will have sold its 3 millionth vehicle inthe United States.

EXPANDING THE PRODUCT LINE

SonataHyundai took a major step to becoming a full-line automotiveimporter/distributor in 1989 with the introduction of its midsizesedan, the Sonata. This roomy, powerful, front-wheel-drivesedan expanded Hyundai’s appeal to more mature, family-ori-ented buyers. It also offered Excel owners an opportunity tomove up within the Hyundai product line. The Sonata has been redesigned for the 2006 model. Thenew Sonata is a sophisticated design, segment-leading stan-dard safety features and the largest interior in its class.

ScoupeHyundai’s third entry into the U.S. market was the sportyScoupe, introduced as a 1991 model. The Scoupe featuredthe Alpha engine – the first powerplant designed, engineeredand manufactured exclusively by Hyundai.

ElantraThe next member of the Hyundai family to be introduced wasthe compact Elantra sedan, which debuted as a 1992 model. It quickly became one of Hyundai’s best-selling models.

AccentIn 1995, after 9 years in the U.S. market, the Excel was re-placed by the all-new subcompact Accent. With the Accent,Hyundai offered customers high-tech sophistication and fea-tures, but still at an entry-level price.

TiburonIn 1997 Hyundai replaced the Scoupe with the excitingTiburon sport coupe, with styling based on the HCD-II con-cept car introduced at the North American International AutoShow in Detroit in 1993. Tiburon combines sleek, eye-catch-ing styling with outstanding performance and handling.

Santa FeIn the fall of 2000, Hyundai Motor America added the SantaFe. The Santa Fe is a car-based crossover utility vehicle(XUT) that provides car-like ride and handling with the seat-ing position and utility of a sport utility vehicle.

XG SedanIn the fall of 2000, Hyundai Motor America added the XG se-dan. The XG sedan is Hyundai's new flagship vehicle in theU.S. - it is larger and more luxurious than the Sonata.

TucsonIn 2004, Hyundai Motor America added the Tucson. The Tuc-son is an exciting new crossover utility vehicle that is slightlysmaller than the Santa Fe while still providing the utilityneeded for life's daily adventures.

HYUNDAI FACILITIESAs the presence of Hyundai automobiles and Hyundai MotorAmerica continued to grow in America, the company ex-panded its operations and service networks nationwide tomore effectively serve the needs of dealers and customers.
