The Purple’s score wasset up by a Troy Giddens interception of a Perrilloux pass thatgave the Tigers the ball at the White 17-yard line. The Purplesquad scored three plays later.

The scored remained 17-7 at halftime and stayed that wayuntil the fourth quarter when David kicked a 37-yard field goalwith 3:45 to go in the contest.

Perrilloux pulled the White to within 20-17 after connectingwith LaFell on a 23-yard TD pass but that was as close as theywould get as Miles called the contest with 38 seconds left toplay.

"It was probably the most enjoyable time that I have had,and the kids had a great time as well,” Miles said. “What youexpect from execution has to be looked at with the fact that itis a divided team. I liked the format.

“We have improved this spring. We got a lot done duringour 15 workouts. We still have a lot of work to do, but we areheading in the right direction.”

Other standouts during the spring game included LaFellwith three catches for 50 yards; Trindon Holliday with tworeceptions for 65 yards; Keiland Williams with 46 yardsrushing on eight carries and Broussard with 32 yards and onescore on eight attempts.

Head Coach Les Miles

When Les Miles was named LSU’s head football coach in January of2005, the challenge was to not only keep the Tigers as one of thenation’s elite programs, but to also make it better in all phases. Milesaccepted the challenge, and in two years at the helm, he’s advancedevery facet of the LSU football program.

Whether it be on the field, in the classroom, or in the community,Miles demands his players to strive for excellence and pursue aneducation while representing the University in first class fashion. Theresponse by the players has been overwhelming as they’ve postedback-to-back 11-win seasons, played an instrumental role in therecovery efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, while alsoachieving academic success in the classroom. In two years, LSU’s had 37players earn SEC Academic Honor Roll status with another 34 earningtheir college diploma.

Now, as Miles enters his third year with the Tigers, the foundationfor LSU football is more stable than ever. After 22 wins, including eightover foes ranked among the nation’s top 25, and with back-to-backconsensus top five recruiting classes, Miles and the Tigers havesolidified their standing as one of college football’s premier programs.

The LSU Years Les Miles’ first two years with the Tigers has been unmatched in the

history of the program. The results are impressive and staggering: 22wins; 13 SEC victories; 8 wins over top 25 teams; 5 wins over top 10teams; back-to-back top five final rankings; 2 bowl victories, including 1BCS bowl win.

After leading LSU to an 11-2 mark and a top five national ranking inhis first year as LSU's head coach in 2005, many wondered just whatMiles would do for an encore. His second year with the Tigers proved tobe another year full of milestones and firsts as he guided the Tigers toanother 11-2 overall record, culminating with a 41-14 dismantling of 11th-ranked Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.

The Tigers finished their second year under the direction of Milesranked No. 3 in the nation, marking the first time since the 1958-59seasons that LSU was ranked in the top five in the country in back-to-back years.

LSU's at-large berth in a BCS bowl was a first in school history andit also represented the third time this decade that the Tigers ended theirseason in the Sugar Bowl.

In 2006, Miles became the first coachin LSU history to lead the Tigers to back-to-back 10-wins seasons and with 22victories in his first 26 games as theschool's head coach, his win totalmatched Bernie Moore for the most inschool history over that span. He alsobecame the first LSU coach since JerryStovall in 1982 to beat two top 10-rankedteams on the road in the same season asthe Tigers posted a 28-24 win over No. 8Tennessee in Knoxville followed by a 31-26victory over No. 5 Arkansas in Little Rock.

The Tigers were able to accomplish allof this during the 2006 despite having toface four top eight opponents on the road, also a first in school history. LSU posted a2-2 mark in those road games, whichincluded the November wins overTennessee and Arkansas that propelledthe Tigers to a berth in a BCS bowl.

LSU opened the 2006 season in grandstyle, posting identical 45-3 wins overLouisiana-Lafayette and Arizona. After agut-wrenching 7-3 loss at No. 3 Auburn, the Tigers reeled off decisive wins overboth Tulane (49-7) and Mississippi State(48-17). Following a 23-10 setback toeventual national champion Florida, theTigers responded with seven straight winsto end the season, starting with a 49-0victory over a Kentucky team who playedin a bowl game.

The Tigers capped the 2006 with its41-14 win over an overmatched NotreDame team in the Sugar Bowl, giving theTigers its third win in a BCS game sincethe 2001 season. The three wins for theTigers in BCS bowl games since the 2000season, is the most of any SEC teamduring that span.

With a 6-2 SEC mark in 2006, Milesran his record in conference games to 13-

3, which trails only Bernie Moore as thebest start in league games in schoolhistory. Moore won 15 of his first 16conference games from 1934-36.

With a makeshift offensive line thatfeatured three first time starters and apair of true freshmen running having toplug holes in a depleted backfield, theTigers still managed to lead the SEC intotal offense (411 yards per game) andscoring offense (33.7 points per game),while ranking No. 2 in the league inrushing offense (165 yards per game).

Defensively, the Tigers, despite losingthree defensive linemen to the NFL, rankedamong the top four in the nation in scoringdefense, total defense and pass defense.

In all, the Tigers fashioned its 11-2record against seven teams who went onto play in bowl games as LSU’s schedulewas ranked as the 12th toughest in thenation according to the NCAA.

Even though the Tigers had to go onthe road to face four top 10-ranked teamsin 2006, year two under Miles seemedsomewhat ordinary compared to what theTigers had to endure during his first yearin Baton Rouge.

Miles' inaugural season at LSU hadhim leading the Tigers to only the third 11-win season in school history, to a top fivenational ranking and a berth in the SECChampionship Game despite numerousdistractions that covered most of themonths of September and October.

The Tigers, playing without startingquarterback JaMarcus Russell, put anexclamation point on the year with a 40-3win over No. 9 Miami in the Peach Bowl tofinish with an 11-2 overall mark and a No. 5national ranking.

To appreciate just how adverse theconditions that Miles and the Tigers had

to overcome in 2005, you have to go backto late August and Hurricane Katrina, thefirst of two storms to devastate the stateof Louisiana during the fall.

Days before LSU's originally scheduledseason opener against North Texas inTiger Stadium, Hurricane Katrina blewashore, packing tremendous winds, andturned the state, in particular NewOrleans and southeastern Louisiana, upside down.

Massive flooding followed in the wakeof the storm as more than 30 LSU playershad their families and their homesaffected by the hurricane and Miles' firstgame in Tiger Stadium against NorthTexas was postponed. With the LSUcampus serving as the recovery center forthose sick, homeless and displaced due toHurricane Katrina, football seemed to bethe farthest thing from most people's

minds. However, Miles was able tosuccessfully manage a delicate situation, one that saw his team and coaching staffvolunteer time to those in need, while stillattempting to focus on football for at leasttwo hours a day.

After a week of trying to minimize thedistractions for a football team that hadtheir apartments and dorm rooms filledwith displaced family members andfriends due to the storm, it appeared thatthe Tigers would finally get to play ahome game, this time against 15th-rankedArizona State.

However, just as the Tigers began toprepare for the Sun Devils and the seasonopener in Tiger Stadium, it was learnedthat the devastation to New Orleans wasmuch greater than originally thought. With the Maravich Center on the LSUcampus serving as what would become

the largest field triage unit in UnitedStates history, it was mutually decided tomove the LSU-Arizona State game toTempe.

Still, with many in Louisiana under thedistress of Hurricane Katrina, the Tigerswere going to have to take to the desert toface a powerful offense in their first gameof the season.

These were certainly trying times foreveryone in the state of Louisiana, buteven more so for a football coach whonow had his team carrying the banner fora state in need of a diversion. LSU footballhad become a release for those consumedwith the hurricane. LSU even re-stated itsteam goals, putting playing for the stateof Louisiana at the top of the list.

The Tigers didn't disappoint as Milesand his LSU team used a 28-point fourthquarter rally to come back to beat ArizonaState, 35-31, in Tempe.

Now with the Arizona State gamebehind them, it looked as if things for theLSU football team would gradually getback to normal as the Tigers now had aweek off before facing Tennessee in TigerStadium on Sept. 24.

Then, the unthinkable happened.Another storm, this one named Rita, hitsouthwest Louisiana, causing severedamage to more homes, leavingthousands without electricity anddisplacing even more Louisiana natives. The combination of Hurricanes Katrinaand Rita forced LSU to again shuffle its

schedule. Instead of playing Tennessee ona Saturday night in Tiger Stadium, theTigers would now be forced to face theVolunteers on a Monday night. Anemotionally drained LSU team saw a 21-0halftime lead evaporate into a 30-27overtime loss against the Vols.

There was no coaching handbook forMiles to refer to when it came to dealingwith the hurricanes and preparing a teamfor competition during extreme adverseconditions. Miles was on his own, forcedto navigate his LSU team through atreacherous stretch of games, while alsobeing sympathetic to those still under theinfluence of the natural disasters.

With just five days between theTennessee loss and the Mississippi Stategame, Miles and the Tigers wereobviously dealt an unfair hand, however,he asked his team to respond and theydid. The Mississippi State contest was thestarting point for a stretch of games forthe Tigers that saw LSU win nine straight. The 37-7 win over the Bulldogs wasfollowed by a 34-6 road victory overVanderbilt as the Tigers had re-established themselves as one of thenation's elite on the football field. Duringwhat would be 11-consecutive weeks ofplay, the Tigers posted a win over Floridaalong with overtime victories againstAuburn and Alabama. In all, the Tigersbeat four teams ranked among the top 15in the nation, a school record for regularseason victories over ranked opponents.

After 10 straight weeks of play duringthe regular season, the Tigers hadfashioned a 7-1 conference mark and aberth in the SEC title game.

Miles became the only coach in his firstyear in the SEC to lead his squad to theleague's title game. He also became the firstcoach in LSU history to beat Alabama,Auburn and Florida in the same season.

Following a loss to Georgia in theleague's title game, Miles and the Tigersre-grouped, this time to beat No. 9 Miami,40-3, in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Thewin gave the Tigers 11 victories for theyear, making Miles the winningest first-year coach in school history.

Following his first year with the Tigers,LSU had seven players taken in the NFLDraft, including running back Joseph Addai, who went on to win a Super Bowl withIndianapolis in his first season in the league.

Miles, the 2002 Big 12 ConferenceCoach of the Year and former assistantwith Michigan, Colorado and the DallasCowboys who built Oklahoma State into aforce in the Big 12, became LSU's 32ndhead football coach on Jan. 3, 2005. During his two years with the Tigers,Miles has put together a 22-4 overallmark, while leading LSU to a 13-3conference record.

The Oklahoma State YearsIn four short years, Miles turned the

Oklahoma State football program into onethat was nationally competitive, despite

competing in-state against one of thecountry's dominant programs.

Miles honed his head coaching skills atOklahoma State. Under Miles' direction, theCowboys were the only team in the nation tobeat Oklahoma twice in the last four years, and he was also the first coach in OklahomaState history to post wins over Nebraska andOklahoma in the same season.

Miles led the Cowboys to threestraight bowl appearances, anaccomplishment Oklahoma State had notachieved since Jimmy Johnson started astring of three straight post-season gamesbeginning in 1983. In addition, OklahomaState's appearance in the Cotton Bowl tocap the 2003 season marked the first timein 55 years that the Cowboys appeared ina January bowl game.

Miles' success as a collegiate headcoach has come by combining anexplosive offensive system with that of asound defensive scheme. His last twoyears at Oklahoma State, Miles' offensesput up a total of 857 points for an averageof 34.3 points per game.

Miles' college playing and coachingcareer includes experience under some ofthe most noted coaches in collegefootball. At Michigan, he played forlegendary coach Bo Schembechler andlater served on Schembechler's staff. Healso worked with Gary Moeller atMichigan and Bill McCartney at Colorado.

As head coach at Oklahoma State, hebuilt a consistent winner out of a program

Miles’ Career Head Coaching Record

that had recorded only one winning seasonsince 1988, and had posted a record of 13-20 in the three years prior to his arrival atOSU. After going 4-7 in his first year ashead coach in 2001, he took the Cowboysto consecutive winning marks of 8-5 in2002, 9-4 in 2003 and 7-5 in 2004.Miles led Oklahoma State to a four-yearrecord of 28-21 for a winning percentage of57.1, the best career winning percentage foran OSU coach since Jim Lookabaugh endedhis career in Stillwater in 1949.

In 2004, Miles took Oklahoma State ashigh as No. 15 in the country with five wins toopen the season. The 2004 season includedroad wins at UCLA, Colorado and Missouri, and the Cowboys never lost to a team outsideof the top 25. In addition, his 2004 Cowboysranked 12th in the nation in rushing, averaging237 yards per game and Oklahoma State wasamong the national leaders in scoring offensewith 32.3 points a contest.

Oklahoma State's 2003 season washighlighted by victories over eventual Big12 Champion Kansas State and a bowl-bound Texas Tech squad. Miles and hisCowboys won seven straight in 2003 aftera season opening loss at Nebraska andfinished the season with back-to-backvictories.
