2002- Overall Record 40-16 The 2002 UNF baseball season opened with the

Ospreys atop the NCAA Division II national poll, but itdidn't end quite the way the Ospreys had planned.

Despite not qualifying for a third straight trip tothe Division II World Series, UNF did win 40 games, finishing the season with a 40-16 record, and they fin-ished second in the Peach Belt Conference. Throughoutthe regular season the Ospreys only spent two weeks outof the top five in the national poll and ended the seasonas the 10th-ranked team in the country.

The 2002 edition of the UNF baseball squad had12 seniors on its roster, including one of the top pitchingstaffs in the country. Two All-Americans in MattIncinelli and Tod Ewasko and one pre-season All-American coming off arm surgery in 2001, AdamHorne, highlighted the UNF rotation.

UNF opened the season with the Peach BeltChallenge which brought in Florida Tech, Limestoneand Presbyterian. After winning their opening threegames, the Ospreys suffered one of the worst losses inteam history, when Embry Riddle knocked UNF out ofits first-place ranking with a 20-3 win.

After opening the conference season with an 8-1record, including sweeps against Francis Marion andUSC Upstate at home, and taking two of three fromAugusta State in Georgia, the Ospreys opened up theirannual Kennel Club Classic on March 1 against OhioState. After two close losses to OSU and Campbell,UNF began a season-long, 12-game winning streak, including five victories over Division I teams.

After setting themselves up to host the Division IISouth Atlantic Regional for the fourth consecutive yearwith series wins against Kennesaw State and GeorgiaCollege & State, the Ospreys went on the road to USCAiken. UNF and Aiken split a doubleheader the the firstday of the series before the Pacers ended UNF's streakof 29 straight winning series in the PBC with a walk-offhome run in the bottom of the ninth of the series' finalgame. That loss summed up UNF's hopes for staying

70

home during regionals. Traveling to Kennesaw, Ga., for the South Atlantic

Regional was the last thing UNF wanted to do during itsattempt to make it back to the Division II World Seriesfor the third consecutive season. With a No. 2 tourna-ment seed the Ospreys opened up against eventualnational champion Columbus State. In a game that UNFhoped would be dominated by its extremely talentedpitching staff, the Ospreys and Cougars pounded out 23total runs as CSU dumped UNF into the losers bracket,13-10. If any team had the staff to come back from theloser's bracket it was the Ospreys. However, it wouldnot be their weekend.

UNF would go on to lose 3-2 to Georgia College& State the next day.

2003 - Overall Record 39-18 The University of North Florida baseball team

started out the season with plenty of fresh faces, butfrom the beginning it was clear that same success theOspreys have enjoyed in coach Dusty Rhodes' 16 yearsat the helm of the UNF baseball program would contin-ue in 2003.

After a shaky start to Peach Belt Conference play, the young Ospreys grew up, and as they continued tomature they kept moving closer to a conference title.

Along with finishing tied at the top of the confer-ence for the fourth time in five seasons, UNF also madeit to a fifth-straight regional, defeated four teams rankedin the top five in the nation and spent the entire seasonin the top 30 of the national poll.

UNF's season came to a screeching halt in thechampionship game of the South Atlantic Regional, butbefore the year was finished, the Ospreys managed toput together a 39-18 record and 18-9 mark in conferenceplay.

UNF started the season as the No. 6 team in thecountry and quickly moved up to No. 4 in the polls afterputting on an offensive show, with the team averagingmore than 12 runs a game in its first two weeks of play.

After a lull during the middle of the season, UNFtook four of five games from Division I competition atthe Kennel Club Classic, including a 14-5 win againstMichigan State.

The Ospreys carried that success into conferenceplay, taking two of three games from both ArmstrongAtlantic State and Kennesaw State. Marion Knowles andJustin Cerrato helped key UNF's run to a conferencetitle. They were awarded the conference Player andPitcher of the Week awards, respectively, in back-to-

back weeks. All-America Jeff Millsaps added to the team hon-

ors, winning Peach Belt Player of the Week April 14.Millsaps turned out to be a consistent bat in the UNFlineup all season, becoming the first UNF player ever tohit better than .400 in a season. Millsaps finished playwith a .401 batting average, led the team in stolen bases, slugging percentage and runs, and finished second inRBIs.

Joseph Russell seemed to be the one knockingMillsaps in most of the season. He led the team with 75RBIs to go along with seven home runs and a .294 aver-age.

As the offensive production picked up, so did theproduction of the UNF pitching staff. The trio of BrianRauch, Robert Burris and Jacob Dixon combined for 25wins, each finishing the year with an ERA of less than4.00.

When the starters weren't able to finish their work,Justin Cerrato was able to lend a helping hand out of thebullpen, nailing down 10 saves in the regular season togo along with a team-leading 1.84 ERA.

The performances of both Cerrato and Burris weregood enough to land both of them All-America spots.

UNF fans waved a sad goodbye to seven seniors:Jesse Collins, Randy Hart, Justin Newbern, Burris,Rauch, Kazu Nagai and Delvin Haskell.

2004 - Overall Record 41-18 The 2004 University of North Florida baseball

team opened the 2004 season ranked third in the NCAADivision II preseason poll. The Ospreys opened up theirfirst 13 games with a 7-6 record, taking two of threegames in both of the first two conference series againstUNC Pembroke and Georgia College & State.

UNF managed another patented turnaround, how-ever, that started among the best in the country duringthe two-week Kennel Club Classic. The Ospreys went5-1 against Division I teams, defeating the likes ofWestern Michigan (3-1), Ohio State (8-0), MichiganState (18-1), Illinois State (10-0) and Butler (11-3).

From then on it seemed as if the Ospreys wouldsail through the Peach Belt Conference.

Following the Kennel Club Classic, UNF traveledto Kennesaw State and swept the Owls in the three-game series.

Dusty Rhodes, in his 17th season at the helm forthe Ospreys, then picked up win No. 1000 in his careerlater that week in a road game against Mount Olive.

UNF rolled through the rest of the regular season, never dropping a conference series and picking up itssecond-straight and fifth conference title in the past fiveseasons.

As the NCAA South Atlantic Regional rolled intoJacksonville, the Ospreys set atop the rankings for the

tournament. However, after taking their first game of the tour-

nament from Augusta State 9-6, UNF fell in a pitcher'sduel, 4-2, to Columbus State. After reaching the finalgame by beating Pfeiffer 4-3, the Ospreys lost again toColumbus State, 7-6, to end their season with a 41-18overall record.Travis Stanton earned postseason honors by beingnamed to the Rawlings/American Baseball CoachesAssociation NCAA Division II All-America secondTeam. 2005 - Overall Record 48-16 The University of North Florida baseball team left

the Division II ranks in a blaze of glory. With the move to Division I and the Atlantic Sun

Conference pending, UNF made its final season on theDivision II level a memorable one, posting 48 wins enroute to finishing the 2005 season as the national run-ner-up, South Atlantic Regional champion and PeachBelt Conference champion.

The Ospreys' 48-16 mark was just one win shy oftying the school's highest single-season win total on theDivision II level - a mark set by the 2000 squad (49-14).

The 2005 squad's legacy looked to be in questionearly on.

After opening the season with four straight wins, including an 11-1 thumping of No. 14 Valdosta State, the Ospreys fell into a four-game skid that included athree-game sweep by PBC rival UNC Pembroke.

The sweep by the Braves served as a wake-up call forUNF.

While the Ospreys had lost four games in the span offive days to drop to .500 on the season, it would takenearly a month before the squad would drop four moregames. By that time, UNF was well above the .500mark with no signs of looking back, claiming its thirdconsecutive Peach Belt Conference title, and their sixthin eight seasons.

From Feb. 13 until April 12, the Ospreys won 25 of32 contests boosting their record from 4-4 to 29-11.During that stretch UNF posted a 10-2 mark againstranked opponents, while taking eight of nine contestfrom Division I foes, including a 12-4 win overMichigan State and an 8-0 shutout of cross-town rivalJacksonville. The Ospreys' lone loss to Division I com-petition came to Big 10 power Ohio State.

UNF continued its winning ways throughout themonth of April and into the early part of May by reelingoff a season-long 11 game-win streak that includedthree-game sweeps of No. 18 USC Upstate and No. 8

USC Aiken. The Ospreys finished the season with a 26-8 mark

against ranked teams. In their final season in the Division II South Atlantic

Regional, the Ospreys left their mark by doing some-thing that had never been done before in SAR history.

After topping USC Aiken 3-1 in their first game ofthe regional, the Ospreys came up a run short in a 10-9loss to longtime rival Kennesaw State to fall into theloser's bracket of the tournament.

The squad's legacy was once again in question.Needing three wins over the course of two days to

advance out of the regional and into the Division IICollege Baseball Championship in Montgomery, Ala.,the Ospreys rallied to score a 10-9 win over USC Aikenon May 20 and back-to-back wins over Kennesaw Stateon May 21 to become the first team in SAR history towin three games in a row from the loser's bracket toclaim the regional championship.

In a tournament filled with heroic performances, apair of right-handed pitchers stole the show for theOspreys.

Junior right-hander Jacob Dixon powered UNF to thewin in their first outing of the tournament by tossing acomplete-game, four hitter in the Ospreys' 3-1 win overthe Pacers.

One day later, the UNF hurler was back on themound after throwing 104 pitches in his first outing tohelp lead the Ospreys to a 6-5 win over Kennesaw Statein the seventh and deciding game of the South AtlanticRegional.

For his efforts, Dixon received the tournament's MostOutstanding Player award.

Redshirt-freshman Travis Martin also came up big forthe Ospreys.

After making just five appearances during the regularseason, Martin pitched seven shutout innings, scatteringseven hits, to help lead UNF to a 8-3 win over the Owlsand force a deciding game seven.

Martin's performance garnered him a spot on the all-tournament team.

Dixon and Martin were joined on the all-tournamentteam by Marion Knowles (.478, 5 2B, 4 RBIs, 5 runs),second baseman Mike Fryrear (.389, 5 RBIs, 4 runs)and Sadry Café (.400, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 4 runs).

UNF continued its dominance through the first threegames of the College Baseball Championship, scoringvictories over Southern Connecticut State (7-1), WestVirginia State (5-2) and Grand Valley State (2-1) on itsway to a rematch with in-state rival Florida Southern inthe national title game.

In the end, the Mocs' hot bats proved to be too muchfor the Ospreys.

UNF had played only one game the previous threedays - a 2-1 victory over Grand Valley State - whileFlorida Southern had played three, including two againsttop-ranked Central Missouri State.

UNF also had its top two pitchers rested and ready togo against Mocs, who had used two of their top threehurlers to get into the title game.

Florida Southern pounded out 20 total hits againstDixon, Amason and closer Josh Papelbon in their 12-9win, collecting 10 hits against Dixon, eight againstAmason and two against Papelbon.

The Mocs scored three runs in the second, third andsixth innings and put the game away with a two-runninth against Papelbon. Ten of their 12 runs came withtwo outs.

Third baseman Jon Skorupski, along with centerfield-er Josh Howard, Café and closer Josh Papelbon, earnedall-championship team honors.

Skorupski, designated hitter Brennan Grogan,Knowles and rightfielder Café garnered all-conferencehonors, while Skorupski, Grogan, Knowles and Caféearned first team all-region honors.

Starting pitcher Kyle Aylor and Papelbon earned sec-ond-team all-region honors.
