“Sometimes words are so inadequate no matter how eloquent,

sophisticated or elaborate they may be.

The clothes were way more than I anticipated

and greatly appreciated, but they were not the gift…

“After literally living on the streets, filthy and restless,

being looked down upon because of my appearance

I felt at times less than human.

“Thank you for how you received me, how you treated me,

spoke to me, for how you served me and embraced me.

“Your human touch and acceptance

was healing balm to my most innermost hurts.

“Thank you!!!”

Dear Friends,

It was a fantastic 2006! Landmarks were hit this year: 3,462 clients were served and, for the first time in the organization’s history, we reached $1 million in revenue and more than $3 million in-kind. Working Wardrobes is now a $4 million organization! We did our best to be excellent stewards of your gifts to us, and our 2006 audit shows that 91 cents of every dollar went directly to program services!

For 16 years, I have watched this organization grow and every step of the way I can point to a significant relationship that helped us achieve our milestones. Whether it was a partnership with…

• The Men’s Wearhouse who helps us address the needs of at-risk men;

• Cookie Lee Jewelry who gives our women that bit of sparkle and confidence;

• Volunteers like Suzie Hastings who brings her connections within GE Money to work with us;

• Raphael Natale who motivates the men during each Day of Self-Esteem;

• Our amazing National Charity League volunteers who support every event we host;

...each relationship has magnified the ways we are able to help adults in crises achieve success, reclaim their dignity and become self-sufficient. And there are literally thousands and thousands of other volunteers and donors who impact our efforts, too many to mention here. We acknowledge and appreciate every one!

While we continue to reach out to thousands of men and women in our own backyard, we recognize there are many other communities that struggle without an organization like Working Wardrobes to meet the needs of their at-risk population. In 2007 we will begin expanding to new markets by leveraging our valuable relationships, and those we have yet to make. Through a proven track record of outstanding client service, amazing volunteer and donor connections, and a very solid business plan rooted in social enterprise, Working Wardrobes has demonstrated that it is more than a worthy charitable organization—it is a solid choice for corporate investment and partnership.

With sights set high, we will continue to keep client success foremost in our minds, acknowledging that much of our progress will come from leveraging existing and new relationships. Thank you for being a significant part of our work.

With warm regards,

Jerri RosenFounder/ Executive Director

Belief in Action: Social EnterprisesWorking Wardrobes is proactive in funding our programs through social enterprises: the Wardrobing Centers, The Hanger (an upscale resale boutique) and Working Wardrobes Thrift Shop. Comprising 55% of the 2006 budget, these three businesses play a significant role in our ability to provide services to nearly 3,500 men and women in crises.

100% of the proceeds from The Hanger, an upscale resale boutique in Tustin, CA and the Working Wardrobes Thrift Shop in Anaheim, CA directly benefit the clients we serve.

Each year we have continued to see an increase in profitability from both shops, due to strategic and consistent marketing practices, dedicated staff and volunteers, hard-to-beat prices, and unparalleled merchandise. Seven new partner organizations and a record number of clients served grew profits from the Wardrobing Centers by 21%.

Retail Training ProgramOffering more than great merchandise and huge savings, Working Wardrobes’ retail shops provide a forum for on-the-job retail training to program participants. Survivors of domestic violence, recovering addicts and Welfare to Work participants are able to learn valuable merchandising, customer service and general retail skillsin a real-world environment. In 2006, more than 60 women participated in the retail training programs.

A comprehensive Retail Training curriculum is currently in development with an expected roll-out in 4th Quarter 2007.

Wardrobing CentersWorking one-on-one with trained, volunteer Personal Shoppers, nearly 2,000 clients (55% of the clients served in 2006) received a professional “working wardrobe” and learned how to enhance their personal and professional image. Each client also received a gift bag filled with toiletries, and gift certificates for hair cuts and cosmetics.

Success Events Success Events, concentrated Days of Self-Esteem hosted by corporate sponsors and held at the Fountain Valley Center, provided an additional 57 clients from four social service programs with wardrobing, hair and cosmetic makeovers, and “Power of Your Image” workshops. Just as with our signature Days of Self-Esteem, Success Events provide a transformative experience for the participants, instilling confidence, building self-esteem and empowering them to succeed in their interviews.

Page 10: 2006 Annual Report - Working Wardrobesworkingwardrobes.org/downloads/2006annualreport.pdf · crises. Our clients have experienced homelessness, catastrophic illness, alcohol and substance

Success CoachesSuccess Coaches are Human Resource-trained professionals committed to helping transform Working Wardrobes’ clients from the inside out. Partnerships with the National Human Resource Association (NHRA) and the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) play a critical role in the recruitment of Success Coaches and curriculum development.

Working with volunteer Success Coaches, clients acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the interview process and get a job. The cornerstone of their respective Days of Self-Esteem, more than 150 men and women participated in the “First Steps to Career Success” workshops in 2006.

This year, the “First Steps” curriculum received a comprehensive update, standardizing the material and making it even more relevant and applicable to today’s job seeker.

“All I knew of Working Wardrobes

was that they gave out free clothes…

Then they told me that I had to go through 6 weeks of classes.

“I cannot even begin to tell you how much knowledge

I gained from these classes;

everything from how to write a resume, interviewing skills,

how to dress for an interview, and how to fill in gaps in your resume,

and let me tell you—

I had some serious gaps in my resume!

“By the end of the whole experience I had the skills it takes to get a job,

which I did!

“This experience helped me to feel good about myself

when I couldn’t get that from within.”

Cinderellas for LifeFew events in a young lady’s life are as eagerly anticipated as the high school prom. Unfortunately, for many teens in economic need, the ability to afford a prom dress is more a dream than a reality.

Working Wardrobes’ Cinderellas for Life helps make these dreams come true, preparing the ladies for their prom…and their future. In addition to receiving a beautiful dress and coordinating accessories, participants attended workshops on self-esteem, etiquette and goal setting.

During the 2006 Cinderellas for Life, 405 young ladies saw their dreams come true, thanks to the assistance of more than 400 volunteers.

The remaining 1,500 dresses were taken to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, providing dresses for women Marines and military wives attending the U.S. Marine Corps Ball.

Page 13: 2006 Annual Report - Working Wardrobesworkingwardrobes.org/downloads/2006annualreport.pdf · crises. Our clients have experienced homelessness, catastrophic illness, alcohol and substance

Days of Self-EsteemEach year, Days of Self-Esteem are held separately for men and women. Nearly 250 adults in crises were assisted during the 2006 Days of Self-Esteem, representing 7% of the total clients served.

Transforming participants from the inside out, Days of Self-Esteem are the signature events of Working Wardrobes. For many participants who have spent years in abusive situations, battling drug or alcohol addiction, incarceration or homelessness, the caring, supportive and encouraging words from staff and volunteers are more valuable than the clothing they receive.

As self-esteem and dignity are restored, the suits are worn a little taller and accessorized with smiles that seem to grow throughout the day.

Each program participant is provided with professional wardrobing and personal grooming services, self-esteem workshops by renowned speakers, and access to a job fair featuring corporate partners interested in hiring qualified candidates. In order to participate in the Day of Self-Esteem, clients are required to complete the six-session “First Steps to Career Success” workshop series.

Who We ServeWorking Wardrobes is one of the very few organizations in the United States providing wardrobing and career development services to both men and women emerging from crises. Our clients have experienced homelessness, catastrophic illness, alcohol and substance abuse, traumatic financial losses, and/or domestic violence. All clients must be referred by a social service program in Orange County, Los Angeles and the Inland Empire. Following are nearly 60 agencies we partnered with in 2006.

“I still remember arriving, sitting on a bench holding my appointment card.

My hair was long and unstyled; my clothes were old and worn.

But I had hope, I was here.

“I left that day feeling so excited.

All these people telling me I looked wonderful couldn’t be wrong.

You showed me there is another life out there.

A life with nice people, unguarded laughter, decent conversation, and hope.

This must be what Cinderella felt when the Fairy Godmother stepped into her life.

“Each time I come back to volunteer, my mind’s eye sees the surroundings

like it did when I was a guest. I re-live, vicariously through the new guests,

feelings of affirmation, joy, excitement and wonderment. Now I am a Fairy Godmother

and maybe she, like myself, was once a Cinderella and revels in the joy

of watching another Cinderella merge from hopelessness to hope.”

Volunteers: The Heart & Soul of Working Wardrobes!

Whether helping sort clothes in the donation center, assisting in our retail outlets, supporting the staff administratively, personal shopping during a Day of Self-Esteem, serving on our Board of Directors, as a Designing Women Guild member or a Corporate/Civic Advocate, our volunteers are the best!

In 2006, 1,172 volunteers donated 7,793 hours! A recent study identified the value of a volunteer hour to be $18.04. That’s more than $140,586.00 worth of volunteer service (although to Working Wardrobes, it remains priceless)!

To all our volunteers, far too many to mention by name, we thank you!

One of the most significant additions in 2006 was Designing Women, an energetic, creative women’s Guild in support of Working Wardrobes.

The Designing Women bring together a dynamic group who organize fundraising events (including the Baubles, Bangles & Bags Tea and Black Tie & Tennies Gala), advocate on behalf of Working Wardrobes and build awareness in the community.

With an early 2007 membership of more than 30 members, the Guild is expanding its events to include monthly meetings with fascinating speakers.

Dear Ladies,

Starting with just four women, the Designing Women Guild quickly

grew to 30 members and achieved spectacular results in 2006!

We hosted two fundraising events: The Old Bags Tea and

the Black Tie & Tennies Gala. Both events were tremendous

successes and helped spread awareness in the community about

Working Wardrobes and Designing Women.

As our membership grew, we began attracting a number of

members from the South Bay. It was an easy decision to use their

talents and energy in their backyard and start a second guild.

Already the Designing Women, South Bay has 30 members and

is growing weekly! The new Designing Women will continue

spreading awareness of Working Wardrobes and support the

opening of their own The Hanger resale boutique.

The Guilds are looking forward to an exciting 2007. It’s going to be

a great year and we hope you will join us at our events. And please

remember, membership is open and the rewards are many!

Sincerely,

Christy Marlin

President, Designing Women

Baubles, Bangles & Bags TeaKnown in 2006 as “Old Bags,” the inaugural fundraiser hosted by the Designing Women Guild was an overwhelming success!

The High Tea High Fashion spring event was one-of-a-kind. Four hundred well-dressed ladies spent the afternoon shopping, enjoying a delicious high tea and supporting Working Wardrobes. More than 1,000 gently loved handbags (“Old Bags”) were collected to support the female clientele served by Working Wardrobes.

The event grossed $85,000 and the Designing Women have their sights set even higher in 2007. Congratulations!

Black Tie & Tennies GalaGathering to celebrate success and raise funds, guests arrived at The Island Hotel wearing their black tie best with their most creatively decorated tennies! This year’s event, organized by the Designing Women Guild, was a most successful evening, grossing $150,000!

Dear Stakeholders,

Thank you for your continued support! Your investments and contributions are genuinely

making a difference in the lives of clients we serve and we can all be extremely proud of our

accomplishments in 2006!

Throughout our 17-year existence, we have grown, developed and matured. Now we have

reached an especially exciting time! Working Wardrobes will be increasing the number of

people we impact with our unique delivery of services, and are diligently exploring expansion

opportunities in new markets. We have identified numerous communities throughout

California where Working Wardrobes could make a profound impact in the lives men and

women in crises trying to re-enter the workforce!

While pursuing the agenda of expansion, we remain dedicated to providing exceptional

programs within the existing communities we serve. One way we are accomplishing this

is through the 2007 launch of our Career Development Center which focuses on career

assessments, job and life skills training, and career referrals.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I wish to give a million thanks to our special

volunteers, staff, donors, partners and supporters. We wholeheartedly applaud your

commitment to achieving our goals during this period of expansion and growth.

Sincerely,

Marilen Coughenour

Our sincere gratitude to the 2006 Corporate/Civic Advocates: Aetna, Renee EckersonAmeriquest, Ronda ShaderCareCredit/GE Money, Linda PincombeCisco Systems, Inc., Annie ShainEdwards Lifesciences, Tracy Harding First Team Real Estate, Heidi Denhertog Fox & Company, Judy Fox BrandtHelp Mates, Kathy HoenischHyundai Motor America, Cynthia CoreyHyundai Motor America, Dana BarracloughIBM, Judi ButlerKimco, Kimberly KellerKTGY, Louie GarciaMacy’s Human Resources Center, Sandra Lewis-CooperMitsubishi, Heather DuarteOrange County Fire Authority, Jonathan WilbyRobert Half Management Resources, Olie ShaferRobert Half Management Resources, Pramod DaveSoroptimist International of Lake Forest, Andrea FisherTeam Unisys, Jeffrey IversonToshiba America Information Systems, Ngoc TranU.S. Dept. of Justice, Toni ClinkscalesWMC Mortgage, Suzie HastingsXerox, Bobby Alvarez-Langkamp Yamaha Credit/ GE Money, Laura GallegosYamaha Installment Financing/ GE Money, Jesse Krell

Clothing DonorsThis year we have been celebrating the benchmark of surpassing the $1 million mark. However, when the generosity of our clothing donors are factored in, Working Wardrobes becomes a $4 million organization! In 2006, a total of 1,718 donors donated nearly $3 million worth of professional clothing, accessories, toiletries, furniture and household items. This is a huge testament to the generosity and support of the community, and we thank you! Not only did your contributions help professionally dress our clients on their way to a job interview, but also provided merchandise for The Hanger and Thrift Shop, proceeds of which directly support Working Wardrobes.

WorkingWardrobes.org This was a year of make-overs, and the online image of Working Wardrobes was no exception. Employing the technical webmastering of Meredith Bischoff and made possible by a grant from The Irvine Health Foundation, the website and monthly Hot News e-newsletter were completely overhauled, providing contemporary, clean new designs, easy to navigate format and a wealth of information. These changes mirror the updates that Working Wardrobes’ collateral material have received, thanks to the creative genius of Bonnie Toth!

Working Wardrobes Television ShowNow in its sixth season, the award-winning Working Wardrobes Television Show celebrated another year in programming excellence.

We thank all those who gave of their time to be interviewed, sharing their stories and experiences with our viewers throughout Orange County.

The cast and crew are all smiles after wrapping the last episode for the 2007 season!
