The community made gifts totaling$697,218 to Mary Bird Perkins CancerCenter during the Center’s 2004 AnnualGiving Campaign. Exceeding thecampaign goal, 2004 giving representsan increase of 16 percent over 2003and sets a new annual giving record forthe Center. Gifts from the communityhelp fund the C.A.R.E. Network whichwas established to reduce cancerincidence and mortality in southeastLouisiana and to improve the quality oflife for those affected by cancer. Annualgiving also helps the Center providecancer care for all, regardless of abilityto pay.

Early in the year, campaign leaders setan ambitious goal of $685,000 despitethe fact that the Center wasconcurrently launching a capitalcampaign with a $2 million goal. Thougha successful capital campaign wascritical to fund TomoTherapy and theacademic research partnership withLSU, the Annual Giving CampaignCabinet recognized that the Center’sC.A.R.E. Network depends on annualsupport to expand its reach to patientsand the community.

Bill Peters of Peters Financial Services,LLC served as campaign chairman.Ironically, as the campaign kicked off,Peters received his own cancerdiagnosis. “One in three people in ourstate will receive a diagnosis of cancerduring their lifetime. For men, it is oneout of every two,” said Peters. “Thestatistic became a reality for me in Mayof 2004 when I found out I had prostatecancer. Because of early detection andaccess to quality health care, I am nowcancer free. Some of our neighbors arenot so fortunate.”

Peters applauded the C.A.R.E.Network’s early detection platform andacknowledged its critical, lifesaving rolein the fight against cancer, “What if Ididn’t know what a screening was andthat I needed one?” he questioned.

“What if I couldn’t afford to get ascreening even if I knew I should?Finding out I had cancer really broughthome to me exactly what early detection– just one of the components of MaryBird Perkins’ C.A.R.E. Network – is allabout,” Peters said. The C.A.R.E.Network provided cancer screenings tomore than 3,000 people in 2004.

Ann Wilkinson, annual giving programdirector, Mary Bird Perkins, said,“While many nonprofits have reporteddecreased donations, annual giving tothe Center continues to grow. We aregrateful for a broad base of communitysupport.” Wilkinson praised thegenerosity of the Center’s donors aswell as the commitment of the volunteerleadership and the 77 volunteers whoassisted with the campaign across theCenter’s 15-parish region, “Mary BirdPerkins Cancer Center depends on itsvolunteers to share with the people inthe communities it serves the story ofthis remarkable facility. The beneficiaries

are our patients and our community.”Joining Peters on the 2004 AnnualGiving Campaign Cabinet were GlendaChambers, Owen Cope, Bob Greer,Lee Griffin, C. J. Ladner, Bart Leader,Frank McArthur, Jim McIlwain, CharlotteRay, Greg Scott, JoAnn Templet, PaulThompson, Frank Vallot, Jerry Vascocuand Maurer van Voorthuysen.

My PerspectiveA message from

Todd Stevens, president and CEO

On January 18th, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Centerhosted a celebration to thank the many generousdonors who raised over $2 million to bringTomoTherapy and an innovative academicpartnership with LSU to southeast Louisiana. Doingso would not have been possible without the

groundswell of support from a community committed to saving lives throughleading-edge technology, innovative research and compassionate care.

As mentioned elsewhere in this edition of Perkins Perspective, this life-saving technology was recently referenced in The Wall Street Journal(11/30/04) in an article entitled “Treating Untreatable Cancers,” whichhighlighted new techniques that are allowing doctors to treat previouslyuntreatable cancers-offering new hope to cancer patients. TomoTherapy, currently only available at 20 places in the United States, was one of thetechniques highlighted. Mary Bird Perkins began treating patients withTomoTherapy in January 2005. While TomoTherapy is also available inShreveport, outside of Louisiana patients would have to travel as far asHouston, Texas or Tallahassee, Florida to find this treatment.

In addition, the Center was one of a few sites selected to serve as a Centerof Excellence for TomoTherapy-related research. This will be done throughthe joint venture between Mary Bird Perkins and the LSU Department ofPhysics and Astronomy, which will open up vital new areas of research. Onbehalf of the untold numbers of cancer patients who will benefit from thistechnology, the Center thanks you.

Another community fund-raising endeavor essential to the mission of theCenter is the 15-year old annual golf tournament. This year’s Sprint Openpresented by Associated Food Stores and LEMIC Insurance Company, includes the city’s only professional tournament – the Tight Lies Tour fromApril 14-17. This is the third consecutive year the Tour is making a stop inBaton Rouge as part of the Center’s golf tournament activities. Please joinus at The University Club and show your support for these professionalsand watch some amazing golf. Admission to all four days of the protournament is free to the public.

Proceeds from sponsorships of the Sprint Open go directly to the Center’sC.A.R.E. Network of patient services and community outreach programs, ensuring that the Center is constantly providing critical services to meet themany needs of cancer patients and the general public.

Thanks to your valuable support, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center isable to meet the needs of the community at large. The powerful elementsyou have helped us fuse together enable the Center to provide patients, regardless of their ability to pay, with the best cancer care available. Thiscombination offers over 125 combined years of physician experience inradiation oncology, a highly skilled staff, leading-edge technology, aninnovative research partnership with the LSU Department of Physics andAstronomy and aggressive and effective community outreach andeducation programs. On their own, these elements are certainly potent, but together, they create a formidable force in the fight against cancer.

Thank you.

Capital Campaign Continued...TomoTherapy is a new radiation system thatcombines treatment planning, patientpositioning and treatment delivery to treat awide variety of cancers. It precisely treatssmall or very large areas of the body, as wellas multiple areas of the body in a singleintegrated fashion. TomoTherapy accuratelydelivers the planned dose to the targeted area, minimizing radiation to surrounding healthytissue. It allows doctors to take a CT scan justbefore each treatment to verify the position ofthe treatment area and adjust the patient asnecessary.

Mary Bird Perkins was selected by the makersof TomoTherapy to serve as a Center ofExcellence, developing new clinical protocolsfor radiation therapy and advancing researchand development of the Hi-Art system. Thejoint venture between the Center and LSU willopen up new areas of vital research andultimately help cancer patients, not only inLouisiana, but around the world. In addition, aportion of the capital campaign funds wereearmarked for an endowed chair in medicalphysics. This chair will be important not only tothe research, but also in elevating the nationalstature of the LSU graduate physics program.

Kenneth Hogstrom, Ph.D., former director ofthe graduate medical physics program for theUniversity of Texas, M.D. Anderson CancerCenter in Houston and currently Mary BirdPerkins’ chief of physics and director of LSU’smedical physics program, will lead theresearch effort. “The TomoTherapy system, resulting from community contributions, opensour community to benefit from the latest inimage-guided radiation therapy equipment,”said Hogstrom. Citing physicist Albert Einsteinwho said ‘Imagination is more important thanknowledge,’ Hogstrom credited everyone whoparticipated in the campaign for showing theirimagination and vision for the future of MaryBird Perkins Cancer Center.

Please contact Lynn Weill, chief developmentofficer, if you are interested in being a part ofthis incredible community coalescence. Giftsand pledges are still being accepted in orderto reach the campaign’s stretch goal of $2.5million.

Community CelebratesOutstanding CampaignThe atmosphere was jubilant on the evening of January18th as generous community members, along with MaryBird Perkins medical staff, employees, board membersand campaign volunteers, gathered at the Center tocelebrate the community’s achievement of reaching andexceeding its $2 million goal for the “Whatever It Takes”Capital Campaign, making possible the acquisition ofTomoTherapy and the Center’s research partnership withLSU.

Campaign leaders lauded these two extraordinaryinitiatives and applauded the many supporters. “Mary BirdPerkins medical staff, employees, board members andcampaign volunteers were the first to be asked tocontribute to the fundraising effort and there was 100%participation almost immediately,” said Campaign Co-chair John Barton. Co-chair Louis Curet said, “I feelhonored and privileged to have the opportunity to helpMary Bird Perkins move to a new level of radiationtreatment by raising funds to bring TomoTherapy to thiscommunity.”

Chairman of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Board ofDirectors, Joseph H. “Jay” Campbell, Jr. noted that thiswas the Center’s first capital campaign in 14 years andpraised the Center’s foresight in moving forward with thiseffort. Board Member Emeritus, Kevin Reilly, Jr., whosefamily came forward to make the lead gift of the campaign, shared his feelings about what the equipment andpartnership mean in terms of new hope for patients. The ExxonMobil Foundation has awardedMary Bird Perkins Cancer Center a$100,000 grant to support the purchase of amobile screening clinic. This mobile clinicwill allow the Center to expand theavailability of free community cancerscreenings dramatically for the 1.1 millionresidents of its southeast Louisiana servicearea and beyond.

“A mobile screening clinic will allow us toplace special emphasis on serving the ruraland working poor for whom the need isgreatest,” said Lori McCallum, executivedirector, Mary Bird Perkins C.A.R.E.Network, which oversees such communityoutreaches.

“This was a perfect match for the ExxonMobilFoundation and its long tradition ofpartnering with nonprofit, communityorganizations in the areas of health, education and the environment,” saidExxonMobil Public Affairs Advisor CharlieRowton. ExxonMobil has been a supporter ofMary Bird Perkins Cancer Center since theCenter’s first capital campaign in 1990. “Weare so proud of our partnership with MaryBird Perkins and its commitment to addressimportant community challenges and seeingthose challenges as opportunities,” saidRowton. “By expanding early detectionprograms for the medically under-served, theC.A.R.E. Network is targeting under-represented groups, the very focus of ExxonMobil’s global health initiatives. We’re excited about this project and the contribution it willmake to the well-being of citizens throughout southeastLouisiana.”

Tommy John, M.D., medical director, ExxonMobil BatonRouge, sees the mobile screening clinic as having a majorimpact in the region, as well as in the state, “To reachunder-served populations where people are least likely totravel great distances for a screening, and whereadequate facilities for cancer screenings rarely exist, amobile medical clinic designed specifically for communitycancer screenings is the perfect solution.”

Under-utilization of cancer screenings by Louisianans hasbeen reported by the National Centers for Disease Controland is a contributing factor to Louisiana’s high cancermortality rates.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), morethan half of all new cancer cases are screeningaccessible. Nationally, the five-year survival rate for thesecancers is about 85 percent. According to ACS, if allAmericans participated in regular cancer screenings, thissurvival rate would increase to 95 percent.

Volunteer Owen Cope:

A Man for All ReasonsOwen Cope is a man who likes gettinginvolved. He remembers always beingthat way. “Growing up in Jamaica I was inthe Boy Scouts, the school choir and theyouth club. I also played soccer and wasan altar boy,” Cope recalled. Today, as acustomer service manager for Entergy inWest Baton Rouge, Iberville and PointeCoupee parishes, Cope is active in manyorganizations.

“I have the Entergy Corporation to thankfor that,” Cope said. “Customer servicemanagers are encouraged to participate inthe community. They allow me the time toget involved.”

Cope makes it clear that he’s definitely not one who joins organizationsfor the sake of joining, “I want to make a change, make things better. Iam a people person, but I only surround myself with positive people. Ihave no time for anything negative.”

Cope came to the United States to study electrical engineering atChicago Technical College. Upon graduation, he returned to Jamaicafor five years before moving to New Orleans in 1976 to work for NOPSI(New Orleans Public Service, Inc.), a company later purchased byEntergy. When Entergy acquired Gulf States Utilities, Cope wastransferred to the Baton Rouge area.

“It was then that I met Owen,” said Ann Wilkinson, annual givingprogram director, Mary Bird Perkins. “I was chairman of the West BatonRouge Chamber of Commerce Board and as such was asked tointroduce Owen to the West Bank communities.” Subsequently, Copehas served as chairman of the chamber boards for West Baton Rougeand Iberville parishes, as well as president of both the Port Allen Rotaryand Family Services. “He is an exemplary community leader andoutstanding volunteer,” said Wilkinson.

“I really didn’t know much about Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Centerwhen I was asked to join the Annual Giving Campaign, but I justcouldn’t say no to Ann,” said Cope. “I came on as vice chair of theindustry division under Chairman Judy Nordgren and later moved intoher position when she relocated to Washington D.C.” That was in2002. Cope has continued to serve as industry division chair in both2003 and 2004. Industry giving has exceeded $100,000 in each year ofCope’s tenure.

“Any success I have had is because of the Mary Bird Perkins staff,”declared Cope. “They are the experts on what they know – cancer. Theytalk about what they know and then I do what I’m good at – asking forfinancial support. It’s not hard to ask if you have something good to selland Mary Bird Perkins sells itself.”

Cope is a member of 100 Black Men; serves as treasurer of the boardof Family Services of Greater Baton Rouge; is president of the Boardof Career Builders; and is vice president of the Board of YoungEntrepreneurs Succeeding (YES).

“I used to worry about what I’ll do when I have to retire,” said Cope,“but I know I’ll always be involved. I’m not going to rest until they layme out.”

Scott Foundation GrantSpreads Holiday CheerDue to a grant funded by the ScottFoundation of Monroe, Louisiana in the lastquarter of 2004, the holidays were muchbrighter for many of Mary Bird PerkinsCancer Center’s neediest families.

“So many families impacted by cancer justdon’t have the resources to have Christmas,”said Mary Livingston, director of socialservices, Mary Bird Perkins. In 2004, with thehelp of the Scott Foundation, the Center wasable to ensure that those families received themakings for Christmas dinners and that thechildren had gifts to open on Christmasmorning.

This is the second time in three years that theScott Foundation stepped forward to helpwith this endeavor.

A free prostate cancer screening was heldat the Bogalusa Wal-Mart on Saturday,November 6, 2004. The screening, whichincluded a PSA blood test and anexamination of the prostate gland by aphysician, was for men of appropriate age*who did not have access to routine healthcare or had not been screened in the past12 months.

This free community cancer screening wasco-sponsored by the C.A.R.E. Network ofMary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, St.Tammany Parish Hospital and the RichMauti Cancer Fund. Mauti, a former footballplayer with the New Orleans Saints, founded the Rich Mauti Cancer Fund inhonor of his father who died of lung cancerin 1979. Mauti made an appearance at thescreening to see the integral role the RichMauti mobile medical clinic plays incommunity cancer screenings.

“Early detection of cancer can help savelives,” said Mauti. “The point of a screeningis to evaluate your current health status andto educate people about being aware of theearly signs and symptoms of cancer. Thefacts are, the earlier cancer is detected, thebetter the chances of beating this dreadeddisease.”

* Men 50+ should have a PSA blood testand a digital rectal exam annually. Menwith a strong family history of prostatecancer or African-American men shouldbegin at age 45.

In partnership with Woman’s Hospitaland ENCOREplus, the Mary BirdPerkins C.A.R.E. Network has beenconducting breast cancer screeningsfor uninsured women since October2002. “We were picking and choosingplaces as opportunities arose,” saidLori McCallum, executive director,C.A.R.E. Network. “We always did thiswith an eye for a location that wouldbest reach medically under-servedwomen and allow us to offer thisservice on a regular basis.”

With that in mind, members of thepartnership met with Dr. Fred Cerise, then medical director of Earl K. Long(EKL), to ask about the availability ofthe EKL clinic within the Leo S. Thus, monthly breast cancer screeningsbegan at the Leo S. Butler Center inSeptember 2003. Offered on the third

Friday of every month from 1:00 p.m.until 4.30 p.m., free clinical breastexams are performed by a physician ornurse practitioner for women 18 andolder. Screening mammograms areavailable for women 40 and older whohave not had a mammogram in the past12 months. The mammograms are freefor women without insurance.

When Cerise left his position at EKL tobecome Secretary of the Department ofHealth and Hospitals, the actingadministrators at EKL invited thepartnership to replicate its model at thenew Louisiana State University HealthSciences Center (LSUHSC) Mid Cityclinic on North Foster Drive. “We’realways looking for more locations,” saidMcCallum. “This was a different part oftown where the need was just asgreat.” Subsequently, August saw thebeginning of Mid City Clinic screeningsoffered the second Tuesday of everymonth from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. atthe LSU clinic at 1401 N. Foster Drivein Baton Rouge.

“This model with Earl K. Long is a greatdemonstration of what public/privatepartnerships can accomplish,” saidMichael Butler, M.D., chief medicalofficer of the LSUHSC Health CareServices Division. “A significantnumber of uninsured women aregetting mammograms in their localcommunities through this collaboration.Agencies that get more peoplescreened are to be applauded andsupported.”

In 2004, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer

Center’s C.A.R.E. Network screened

a total of 3,185 people at 53 free

community cancer screenings. In

addition, education was provided to

5,518 people, which included 510

patients, 1283 medical professionals

and 3,725 of the general public at

community events.

A recent breast cancer screening held at the TangipahoaParish Health Unit in Amite on Saturday, January 22, drewwomen from the surrounding communities of Kentwood,Raceland and Livingston. It was the first time Mary BirdPerkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network and itscollaborators held a screening in Amite. A majority of thewomen at the screening had not had a mammogram inthree years or more.

The C.A.R.E. Network was already interested in increasingscreening services in this area of the state, havingconducted a breast screening in Hammond in October,2004 which resulted in seven women being referred forfurther testing. The C.A.R.E. Network will be offering freequarterly breast screenings during 2005, alternatingbetween the Tangipahoa Parish Health Units in Hammondand Amite.

Well-Attended JanuaryColorectal ScreeningErin Moller, outreach coordinator,C.A.R.E. Network, educates screeningparticipants who picked up take-homecolorectal cancer screening kits. Heldin the lobby of Mary Bird Perkins CancerCenter’s Baton Rouge location, thescreening was so well-attended that theC.A.R.E. Network has added acolorectal cancer screening at the BatonRouge Center every month for the rest ofthe year, in addition to all other regularlyscheduled screenings.

Hillar Moore, Jr.Donates LifeInsurable Interest

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center BoardMember Hillar C. Moore, Jr. recentlypresented the Center with a check forthe Endowment from the sale of his lifeinsurable interest. With the counsel ofBob Greer and Jonathan Greer, thesefunds were raised through a uniquestrategy that uses an asset that isfrequently not recognized or goesunused. That asset is an individual’sinsurable interest, which is determinedby an individual’s estimated net worth atlife expectancy.

For Moore, this strategy meant giving agift to Mary Bird Perkins’ Endowment byusing an asset that he never realized hehad available to him. “I did not realizethat the insurability of my life was such avaluable asset,” said Moore. “It allowedme to make a nice gift today to anorganization that means so much to meand it did not take anything away fromme or my family.”

This new vehicle, which converts adonor’s insurable interest into cashcontributions to a designated charity, provides eligible donors with theopportunity to utilize an asset that is

often overlooked and to make such acontribution to his/her charity/charitiesof choice without writing a check. Thisunique product affords donors a verysimple and powerful way to arrange for asizeable contribution that would

normally have been made by moretraditional methods. For informationabout this new giving vehicle, pleasecontact Lynn Weill in the Office ofDevelopment at 215-1201.
