Standard Cutting Speeds

For Thread Cutting and Cold-Forming of Threads in Relation to the Workpiece MaterialPlease note: The speed values in bold print are maximum values. The choice of a specific cutting speed within a recommended speed range depends mostly on the following conditions: material, thread system, quality and depth of the drilled hole, surface treatment or coating, coolant-lubricant, type of machine tool used. The smaller the percentage of alloying components, and the smaller the tensile strength of the material, the higher are the possible cutting speeds. This priciple can also be used vice-versa. If you use poor emulsions without EP additives, or the lubrication quality of your coolant-lubricant is poor, start from the lower speeds in the indicated speed range. In the cold-forming of threads, it is essential to provide good lubrication because of high friction forces. As the lubrication quality of a coolant-lubricant is often unknown we recommend starting from the lower cutting speed in such cases.
