It now hangs in avery special place in their new house. “Thank you” toJohn Liemohn for being the auctioneer and Teresa for being“Vana White.” The auction was a lot of fun and the itemsthat were donated were exceptional.

“Thanks” to Steve Christiansen, Paul Rylance, JackDavies, James McKibbin, and George Zenk for taking careof the Hunt Tests and the Roustabout. The Roustabouthad 22 teams and BISS CH Game CR Waterway Jack ofHearts, WD along with his team of Pam Boyer and SteveBoyer took first place.

Patty held the Water Derby in very little water, buteveryone still had fun. Deb, Sharilee, Linda, and Bethheld fun events that I did not get to participate in or watchas I was helping Patty keep time at the Water Derby.

The annual meeting was exceptionally long.Congratulations to Martha Sbarbori, our new secretary andDavid McCracken, our new Director. I want to thankJeannie Wright and Janice Heck for their hard work whileon the board. I am a better person for getting to know andwork with these two exceptional individuals.

Again, a huge “thank you,” to Patty St. Onge for beingthe Hunt Test Secretary for Saturday’s and Sunday’s HuntTests. “Thank you” to Sheila Norckauer, Martha Sbarbori, and Beth Lagimoniere for assisting Patty. I want to thankFrank Schwantner for spending countless hours plantingbirds and Butch Norckauer, Kathy Davies, and Carol Zenkfor marshalling. Dean Daebler of the Wolf River GameFarm also deserves a bid “thank you,” for his wonderfulhospitality.

If I have missed anyone, please forgive me and I wantyou to know that I appreciated everyone’s assistancehelping us make this year’s Nationals a success.

We ran the first Retriever Certification Test (RCT) withAKC Judges Rodney Blohm (Spaniel) and Keith Kiesow(Retriever) officiating. AKC has not yet approved theRules and Regulations of these tests. Hopefully, we will

know soon if the dogs that had passing scores will be ableto use this test as a pass that will go along with their AKCFlushing Spaniel passes to put a (first time ever) AKC titleon their AWS.

October 21st, I leave for St. Louis, MO for an AKC-Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club CanineHealth Conference. The schedule consists of three daysof continuous speakers on topics such as Development of& Use of Canine Health Surveys, Selection & Funding ofCHF Grants, Cell Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease,Behavior, and the list goes on and on. I am hoping to visitwith some of the speakers relative to the survey that weneed to get sent out and other interests that have beenbrought to my attention. I am working on a Poster for acontest that is being held. I am hoping to win a prize of$500, $300, or $150 that will e made to the Donor AdvisedFund of the Parent Club. Wish me luck.

Once again, I want to thank everyone who helped makeour Nationals a success.

Vice President’s ReportBy Linda Ford

First of all, I want to welcome Martha Sbarbori and DavidMcCracken to the Board. We will all get to know eachother well before this next year is over. There is a lot ofwork to be completed for the Club so we will have a lot ofcommunication.

I want to thank everyone who worked so hard beforeand during the National Specialty. There is a lot of workand organization to make these four days of Nationals cometogether so everyone can have a good time.

It was great seeing old friends and meeting some of thenew members of the club. I really enjoyed taking my 9month old female (Crystal) through the CGC test that JanHeck handled and the Rally demonstration that Frank &Deb Parker and Sharilee Malik set up and worked usthrough it. It proved to me Rally is a great place to start inobedience because you can talk to the dog and it isn’t asrigid as obedience. After completing that you will be wellon your way to going to the strict obedience world.

After I got home I found out that Fran Anderson (amember here in California) had passed away. I knew shehad been sick for quite some time but I hadn’t realizedhow bad she had become in the last few months. Mycondolences are with her family and friends.

The first RCT was run at Nationals which made forlong days. By the Nationals next year, the AWSC HuntTests should be in line with the RCT so running them willalso qualify you for the RCT. This will be a great timesaver and running the hunt tests will qualify you for theAWSC title as well as the qualifying RCTs for your AKCSpaniel Hunt Test title. Some people have already run theAKC Spaniel Tests and are just waiting on approval fromAKC for the RCT to be approved. It will be great to seesome additional hunt test titles on our breed. It will alsogive more people an opportunity to see an American WaterSpaniel work.

If you took some great photos at the Nationals, don’tforget to send a copy of them to the Library. These pictureswill be our history so let’s be sure to add them.

Canine Good Citizen

Success comes in small curly coated brown packages

Thank you for allowing me to judge the Canine GoodCitizen Test at the Nationals this year. The test was heldon the Wolf River Game Farm in Shiocton, Wisconsin.Several club members volunteered to assist with the test. These volunteers made the test interesting and fun as theyplayed the part of the crowd and the distraction.

There were three entrants and all three passed the CGC:Sharilee Malik and Mountain Star Wind of Miriah, HollyTrimberger and Bailey, and Linda Ford and 9 month oldpuppy, California Crystal Ball. The handlers did a greatjob working their dogs through the tests. The tests aredesigned to demonstrate the dog is a good canine citizenfor walks in the neighborhood, visiting a groomer orveterinarian, appropriately meeting other dogs andappropriately meeting other people. Congratulations to allthree teams.

Addressing IssuesThis article is hoped to be the first in an ongoing series

designed to address issues and concerns with variousaspects of the AWS Retrieving Certification Test, betterknown as the RCT. It is hoped that the series will developinto a guideline for judges, sponsors, and participantsinvolved in conducting the AWS Retrieving CertificationTest. Let’s get started with some of the recent concernsexpressed by participants in the first and only set of testsheld up to this time.

Before we get into specific rules, we will look at a fewcriticisms that do not directly pertain to the running rulesof any particular test level. The first such criticism is thatthe RCT was developed, indeed mostly taken, direct fromthe American Kennel Club (AKC) rules for RetrieverTests. This is not at all false information. When it comes tothe actual rules of each test level, essentially, they comefrom the AKC Retriever Hunt Test rule book. Why?

The RCT is a retrieving test and is being used, inconjunction with the AKC Spaniel Hunt Tests, to earn anAKC title; therefore, it made some sense to use the AKCRetriever Hunt Test rule book as a basis for the runningrules. Further, generally speaking, the AKC rules do notvary that much from the rules of the other organizations.Yes, there are some differences but nothing that significantlychanges the flavor of the tests or their intended purpose. The reason we know this is because the AKC rules werenot the only ones referred to when drawing up the RCT.

All of the retrieving hunt test programs are designed tosimulate actual hunting situations but, of course, none ofthem can do exactly that. Unlike what has been suggestedby some, the AKC Retriever Hunt Test rules are notdeveloped to be more like field trials than otherorganization’s retriever hunt test rules and do not makethe RCT more difficult than it should be. Actually, the RCTcould have been developed from any of the three majorretriever testing organization’s rules and they would havebeen, essentially, the same. In fact, a variety of rules fromNAHRA and UKC/HRC were incorporated into the RCT,in one way or the other, and effectively created a test whichis specific to the AWS and created for the AWSC.

Further, with regard to the use of the AKC RetrieverHunt Test rules as a starting point for the RCT, it has beensaid that, “Many aspects [of the AKC Retriever HuntTests], much to the chagrin of novice and intermediateparticipants, are just too contrived.” The rules for theAKC program do not lend themselves to the implementationof “contrived” tests anymore than the rules of any othertesting program. Contrived tests are the purview of theindividuals that setup the tests rather than a product of the

rules. Test setups that do not closely simulate actual huntingsituations or that seem to be outside the confines of therules and their intended purpose will not be allowed. It willbe the responsibility of every sponsor and hunt testcommittee to see to it that this basic principle is adheredto.

Comments have been made that suggest the first runningof the RCT had judges interpreting rules according to AKCguidelines and not our own guidelines. While one person’sguideline is another person’s rule it should be stressed thatthe only guidelines that are to be followed are thosecontained in the RCT. Guidelines serve as a point ofclarification for all parties involved in the test process andare developed over time to address problems that ariseduring implementation of the rules. The RCT did not havespecific guidelines, other than the actual rules, when it beganbecause there was no history to show where problemsmight develop. Since the running of the RCT in August wehave begun to develop a set of guidelines to assist both thehandlers and the judges with rules interpretation.

Retrieving Certification Test

AWS Cody retrieving a duck (Jean and DuaneWright)

With that said though there are two other points thatshould be noted. One is that there are some specific partsof the rules that guide judges and handlers in anunderstanding of exactly what should be done and expected,so it is not as though the RCT gives either party carteblanche when it comes to interpretation. The other point isthat, no matter how many guidelines are developed, therules and the expectations of the performance are subjectto the interpretation of the judge. As long as the humanelement is a part of any testing program there will bedifferences in interpretation, expectation, andimplementation of such programs. All we can do is to workhard to minimize the extent of such differences.

A few AWSC members have questioned why sponsorsof an RCT must request approval to hold the test no later

than ninety days prior to the test dates. The answer issimple; it involves preplanning and verification of therequirements for a sponsor. Judges must be AKC licensed, there must be ducks and decoys for the master level, theproper paperwork must be on hand for the sponsor, writtenapproval must be given by the AWSC, and other specificorganizational matters must be in place. This realisticallyprecludes allowing for ‘on the spot’ decisions to hold anRCT as some have implied that they would like to see.AKC clubs must apply for approval to hold an AKC test atleast four months (120 days) ahead of the event. Requiringthose who are willing to hold an RCT to apply for approvalthree months in advance (90 days) is a very reasonablerequirement.

The matter of using only AKC judges for the RCTcontinues to be brought up by some members. AKC spanieland retriever judges are qualified to judge these tests and, because a dog that passes an RCT earns an AKC title, they will be the only judges that can be used to determineRCT passes of any type. Now, let’s move on to someconcerns about the actual rules.

During the RCT that was run in August there wasconfusion over whether or not the rules allowed for thehandler to communicate with the dog. At least one judgefelt that communication with the dog, as the birds werebeing thrown, was not allowed in the rules. There is nothingin the rules that states dogs cannot be communicated withas they are running the test. There are a number of areasin the rules that state a handler shall not intimidate a dog inany manner during the test and each judge has the abilityof determining just what intimidation is and what it is not.Apparently this judge wanted to avoid any possibility ofverbal intimidation by having the handlers be silent as thebirds were launched. Put plain and simple, this judge waswrong in making this determination. Steps have been takento clarify this point and all future judges and handlers willbe given the following instruction with the rules:

Unless otherwise noted, the handler is allowed to talk tothe dog in a quiet manner throughout the running of thetest as a means of directing, reinforcing, or supporting thedog’s actions. It is important to remember that this test isan attempt to simulate a hunting situation and, as in a huntingsituation, all verbal communication with the dog should bedone in a manner that would not disturb a normal day’shunt.

Handlers should feel free to communicate verbally withtheir dog, however, constant nagging, shouting, or harshtones could lead toward a lower than desirable score.

One handler who ran in the August RCT has said, “Thejudges’ assumption that certain actions were to be

AWS Nighthawks Rupert and Paul Rylance at Vergas,MN - June 2001 hunt test (Susan Rylance)

considered intimidation of the dog were wrong.Kneeling beside your dog is NOT, in and of itself, intimidation.” There is nothing in the rules that sayskneeling beside your dog is intimidation and there is nothing

in the rules that says a handler cannot kneel beside the dogwhile running the test. Many of us do this or somethingsimilar, like sitting on a bucket, in actual hunting situations. For those dogs that have been trained to mark birds off ofthe gun, kneeling or sitting beside the dog helps it to markand to retrieve the bird in a more efficient manner. Ifanything, this type of action should be encouraged ratherthan penalized. The judges were wrong and handlers willbe allowed to kneel, sit, or stand as they run their dogs inan RCT.

A variety of questions or concerns have arisen on theissue of bank running and there will be an attempt to clarifyto everyone just what is expected. The first thing that mustbe noted is that as you go up the ladder in degree of difficulty, from Junior, to Senior and finally to Master, you will begiven less leeway in just how much bank running isacceptable. Here is a brief look at what is contained in therules.

Junior level: A dog that runs the bank to enter thewater shall be marked down. Use of the bank upon returningto the handler is of less concern with the Junior dog.

Senior and Master level: A dog that runs the bank toenter the water shall be marked down.

At least one AWS handler that ran in the August RCThas attempted to somehow infer, through the actions ofthe judges, that the rules indicate bank running is anautomatic failure. There is no place in the rules that says adog that runs the bank at any level will be failed or thatindicates where the judge may score for bank running (i.e.Style, Trainability, etc.). The desire is for the dog to not runthe bank at all but we all know that there will be timeswhen a dog is going to do just that no matter what we

AWS Cody retrieving a duck (Jean and Duane Wright)

desire. So, a dog is probably going to lose points when itcomes to bank running but just how many points is going todepend upon many factors. A few of the factors that judgeswill and should consider when making their decision include:

Field conditions – Is this a pond that encourages bankrunning? If so, then the loss of points should be less thanfor a body of water that does not encourage such action.

Test level – What level is being judged? There is goingto be less variability for the Master dog than for the Junior.

Severity – Did the dog run ten yards down the bankand then immediately enter the water or did it simply takea few leaps to one side or the other before choosing to goin? The dog that takes longer to hit the water is going tolose more points on its score sheet.

Other factors – Does the dog run the bank and stillshow hesitancy to enter the water even though it eventuallymakes the retrieve? If a dog takes a brief run down thebank and then dances around the water’s edge beforedeciding to launch itself toward the retrieve it is going toget a lower score. That score is likely to be reflective ofnot only the bank running but the hesitancy to enter thewater as well. Such a score will likely be listed simply as abank running problem.

On a multiple marked retrieve, did the dog run the bankon every retrieve or did it run the bank only once? A dogthat runs the bank one time in this type of situation willlikely get a higher score than the dog that runs the bankevery time.

As with all aspects of the rules, the variability of thescore is dependent upon what the judge desires. As hasbeen stated before, these tests are judged by humans andthey will interpret and rule based upon their own set ofbeliefs and desires. If your judges are looking for a Masterdog to be the epitome of a finished retrieving dog then it islikely that they will want very minimal bank running, if anyat all, and the number of points lost at this level will behigher than those lost at lower levels.

In writings that have criticized the RCT it has been said,

“Any experienced AWS owner knows that our dogs willrun the banks. Training can avoid it somewhat, butthe characteristic of efficiency often rules with anAWS.” It has already been acknowledged that bank runningis a trait that is seen in many, if not most, dogs; not justAWS. It is also generally acknowledged that the AWS canbe a very efficient hunting machine but bank running is notalways the most efficient or the most desirable trait in anybreed of dog used for retrieving. The statement aboveseems to be saying that the AWS should be allowed to runthe bank when making a retrieve without any penalty or, atleast, with a minimal penalty. Well, that is simply not inkeeping with the preferred work of a retrieving dog and soreduced scores will remain in place for any dog that runsthe bank during an RCT. How much a dog’s score isreduced will depend upon all of the factors listed aboveand possibly a few others that judges feel affect the dog’sperformance.

The AKC Litter Certificate shows that a litter has beenofficially registered with the AKC. The document displaysthe breeder’s name, the litter whelp date, and the numberof puppies in the litter. In addition, it lists the AKC registeredname, AKC registered number and stud book date for eachdog in the previous three generations of the litter’s lineage.

and similar not-for-profit organizations providing care fordomestic animals orphaned or displaced as a result of naturalor civil disasters. This fund was created in response to theSept. 11, 2001 terrorists attacks and since its inception hasprovided relief to dogs as a result of the California wildfires, and last year’s multiple hurricanes in Florida. Because ofthis fund AKC has been able to respond quickly to thecurrent situation in the Gulf region.

While 100 percent of the proceeds of donations sent tothe AKC/CAR Katrina Relief fund are used to provide forthe dogs, AKC also recognizes that dog owners also needhelp and so we have given an additional donation of $25,000from the AKC/CAR Canine Support and Relief Fundgeneral fund to the Take the Lead Katrina Disaster Fundto aid those in the fancy affected by the disaster.

Immediately after Katrina struck, the AKC set-up aKatrina Relief Section on our web site including a DonationsExchange Database at www.akc.org and so far there hasbeen more than 500 offers of assistance. People have comeforward with offers of equipment, foster homes, andtransportation for canine victims and their owners. Peoplemay also list their requests for help.

AKC also sent a Disaster Relief Van to the SomersetHills Kennel Club and Westchester Kennel Club dog showsso fanciers could drop off supplies and equipment or makedonations in person.

Additionally, AKC clubs have been very generous withdonations to help the dogs. Some are collecting donationsat dog shows or AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Dayevents throughout the country or are matching donationsfrom their members.

For frequent updates about our relief efforts or if anyclub or individual wishes to make a fully tax-deductibledonation to the AKC/CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund- Katrina, or wants to add to the Donation ExchangeDatabase, please visit our website at www.akc.org.

I want to personally thank everyone, including those clubmembers in the region, for their voluntary donations of timeand money who have been instrumental in getting relief tothe dogs.

Sincerely,Ron Menaker, Chairman

2005 Brown Bag Raffle andAuction

The Club once again wants to thank it’s membersfor their generous donations of items for both theseevents. This year our contribution to paying theexpenses of the 2005 National Specialty and HuntTests was $2000.00. This money goes a long waytoward helping with the expense the club incurs whenputting on an event the size of our national.

Because both donations and participation weredown this year from last year, we are particularlyappreciative of the members who took the time tosend items, purchase tickets, and bid on items in theauction.

Thank you to John Liemohn for another year asour auctioneer. The hour was late, but John servedwith speed and humor.

Thanks to a suggestion from Mark Wilkins afterthe 2004 national, each donating corporation receiveda thank you note at the time of their donation. Thishelps us secure these important contacts for 2006.

Every year someone helps us by receiving andmaking an inventory of donations. This year CheriDouglas had that duty and she helped with our set upfor the raffle as well. Thank you again, Cheri. Andthen there are all the people who help us with sellingraffle tickets and permitting their arms to be used formeasurement. Thank you all. As you can see this is amultiperson effort.

There are always interesting stories about some ofthe donated items. This year one of the last minutedonations came from the owner of a quilt shop nearthe hunt test site. Teresa and I were shop hoppingand visited this little country shop on our way to thehunt test. While shopping and talking, we discoveredthat the shop owner had previously had and loved twoAmerican Water Spaniels. As we were leaving, shedonated an Americana print wall hanging for ourauction.

Thank you again. Jean Wright & Teresa Marley

The American Kennel Club (AKC®) and affiliatedorganization AKC Companion Animal Recovery continuerelief efforts with a shipment of bowls, crates and exercisepens to the Louisiana State University Veterinary Schoolstaging area in Baton Rouge in the aftermath of HurricaneKatrina. For people wanting to volunteer much neededequipment, housing and personal resources, such as foster

homes and offers of transporting dogs, AKC has set up aweb-based donation exchange on its website atwww.akc.org

“As is our tradition, AKC will take whatever steps arenecessary to do what is in the best interests of helpingdogs in need,” said AKC Chairman Ron Menaker.

“AKC® and AKC/CAR want concerned animal loversto know that 100 percent of donated funds go directly tohelping animals with no funds used for administrativepurposes,” said AKC President and CEO Dennis B.Sprung. “The AKC family is a vast network of clubs, clubmembers and individuals from around the country who haveopened their hearts to helping dogs that have been lost, displaced or injured by Hurricane Katrina. As anorganization we will continue to send whatever suppliesare needed to help in our relief mission.”

In addition, AKC launched a donations exchangedatabase on its website www.akc.org with “Need Help?”or “Want to help?” buttons on its home page. So far, wehave an outpouring of relief from many people including ahomeowner with a spare bedroom for a family with pets tooffers of fostering dogs with medical needs to drivinganimals to a shelter. Those in need of such assistance cansearch the database by state.

AKC is a “club of clubs” with nearly 5,000 member, licensed, and affiliated clubs with thousands of volunteersacross the country ready to help the dogs affected by thedisaster. While donations are paramount on everyone’s mindnow, relief efforts will continue for weeks and months.AKC clubs are coming forward donating portions of theirproceeds from dog shows, collecting funds at their AKCResponsible Dog Ownership Day events at the grassrootslevel.

As always, since the terror struck dogs and their ownersjust over a week ago, AKC continues to work with its clubdelegates, presidents and secretaries with the AmericanVeterinary Medical Association, the Louisiana StateUniversity Veterinary School, the Houston Kennel Cluband the Florida Association of Kennel Clubs to provide aidwhere it is needed most.

*** NEW FUNDRAISER! ***

The Canine Health Foundation has honored AWS Partners once again with an offer to sponsor a grant for Epilepsy Research.

This warrants another fundraiser.

AWSPartners proudly presents:

"AWS & FRIENDS' TAIL-WAGGIN' TIPS"

Beginning May 2005

This fundraiser had been postponed during a busy time for us, but it is now time to once again have fun in supporting health in the AWS!

This fundraiser welcomes participation by AWS and ALL Friends.

AWS Par tners has been offered participation in Grant #266 through the Canine Health Foundation to continue the study of epilepsy. Now we must raise the necessary money to contribute our share. This calls for a new fundraiser that we think you will be excited about! We are again calling on help from all of our AWS Partners and their Friends to create a book on helpful tips for dog owners called "AWS & Friends’ Tail Waggin' Tips". This will be a 7 ½” x 9 ¼” bound paperback book of helpful tips for dog owners and will include not only pictures of AWS but other breeds as well. So, if you have another breed of dog in your home, a friend with a pet, etc., they can be included!

If you would like to review this information on line, please visit our web site at: http://home.earthlink.net/~awspartners/

Inorder to accommodate everyone, if we reach the maximum pictures allowed, householdswith multiple submissions will be notified of a limit. We encourage everyone to send in a tip with each of their dogs’ pictures. This book isabout sharing! We will have tips available to “borrow” at an additional fee. The American Water Spaniel Club, Inc. suggests that you may want to ask some of the following questions of breeders:

How many years have you been breeding AWS?

How many litters have you bred?

Do you show your dogs at AKC or AWSC events? If yes, in which areas - agility - breed/ conforma-tion - hunt tests - obedience - tracking?

How many AWS have you bred or owned with thefollowing titles: Breed/conformation CH —-Obedience, CD, CDX ,UD, UDX OTCH—-Tracking,TD, TDX —-Hunting, AWSC SD, WD, WDX, WDS- NAHRA SR, WR, MHR, GMHR?

Which of the following genetic examinations doyou routinely obtain on all of your breeding stock?OFA hip certification, CERF eye certification?

How do you temperament/aptitude test yourpuppies?

At what age do your puppies go to their new homes?
