Porchea Carroll took over the No. 7 spotin the 100m dash (11.49). In the pole vault,Alana Waterford and Kristin Schow eachcleared 3.26m to tie for No. 5 on the list.

TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADERS!ASU athletes have combined to record

a trio of marks that currently (April 5) rankas the best in the nation. For the women,Cassandra Reed tops the 400m dash listat 52.84 while Jessica Pressley is No. 1in the shot put at 16.68m. For the men, thequartet of Steven Koehnemann, DomenikPeterson, Seth Amoo and Lewis Bandaare ranked No. 1 in the 4x100m (39.14).

NOT THE BEST ... BUT CLOSEAlong with the three top marks, seven

other marks recorded so far this seasonrank among the Top 5 in the nation. Onthe women’s side, Amy Hastings rankssecond in the 10,000m run (33.19.32) whileJessica Pressley sits second in the dis-cus (55.07m) and fourth in the hammer(62.52m). Julia Pedersen rounds out thewomen’s marks with the fifth-best discusmark at 54.35m. The men see Seth Amoo(20.79) and Lewis Banda (20.84) rankedin the 200m dash at third and fifth, respec-tively, while Ryan Warrenburg sits third inthe 3,000m steeplechase at 8:46.25.

INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS = TEAM RANKSThe first outdoor rankings were released

by Trackwire.com April 5 with both the menand women earning spots in the nationalTop 25 lists. The Sun Devil men lead theway at No. 5 while the women are tied for19th overall. Arkansas leads the men’s sideof competition while the Tennessee womenare No. 1 as well.

REGIONAL REGISTRATIONSFollowing competition at the Arizona In-

ternational April 2 in Tucson, the Sun Dev-ils have tallied a combined 39 regional-qualifying marks while adding three auto-matic berths into the national meet. Thewomen are responsible for 21 of the re-gional entries while the men have secured18. Nationally, two women and one manhave earned the automatic berths.

DOING IT DIFFERENT THIS SEASONPrior to the start of the season, the Pac-

10 Conference coaches voted on how stu-dent-athletes would qualify for the confer-ence championship meet at the end ofeach season. Following the vote, it wasdecided that no standards will be createdfor an athlete to try and surpass, rather, the head coach of each team selects up to

24 men and up to 24 women to competeat the Pac-10 meet. Athletes can be en-tered in as many events as the coach seesfit, but no more than eight per school canenter into one event.

LEADERS OF THE PAC (10)Although there are no qualifying stan-

dards for the conference meet, there is arunning performance list for the outdoorseason with 11 Sun Devils holding the topmark so far this season. Six men and fivewomen are leading the Pac-10 while 20women and 19 men have earned marksthat rank them among the Top 5.

I’LL TAKE SPEED FOR 200, ALEXOn the latest Pac-10 performance lists,

the men’s 200m dash looks like a smallerversion of the ASU roster as the Top 5 timesbelong to Sun Devil sprinters. DomenikPeterson leads the way with Seth Amoo,Lewis Banda, Kelvin Love and JasonBarton rank 2nd through 5th, respectively.

Add to that the fact that Love leads the100m dash and Peterson is tops in the400m event, along with the top 4x100mrelay and the four-time defending Pac-10champions in the 4x400m relay, and the

men’s sprints appear to be on track (nopun intended) to succeed this season.

AMONG THE BEST IN THE WORLDSeven members of the Arizona State

track and field program currently holdmarks that rank them among the Top 20 inthe world (as of April 5). For the men, SethAmoo is 17th in the 200m dash while RyanWarrenburg is 15th in the 3,000m steeple-chase event. Porchea Carroll leads thewomen at eighth in the 100m dash whileJessica Pressley sits 16th in the shot put.Cassandra Reed (400m dash), AmyHastings (10,000m run) and AnnaMasinelli (3,000m SC) each rank 12th.

THROWING IM-PRESSLEYJessica Pressley has been very domi-

nant in her first collegiate outdoor seasonwith the Sun Devils in 2005. Not only doesshe lead the nation in the shot put, shealso ranks second overall in the discus andfourth in the hammer.

So far this season, Pressley not onlythrew her way onto the Top 10 lists at ASU,she has set one record and put all three ofher marks among the Top 6 all-time. In thehammer, her mark of 62.52m (205-01) not

only is a school record, but also markedthe first time that an ASU woman hasthrown past the 60m mark and broken 200feet. Her marks in the other two events are16.68m (54-08.75) in the shot put and55.07m (180-08) in the discus.

DOM-INATINGDomenik Peterson has been faring well

this season as he leads the Pac-10 in twoevents and is one leg of a conference-lead-ing relay. So far in 2005, Peterson leadsthe Pac-10 in the 200m and 400m dashesand joins Seth Amoo, Lewis Banda andSteven Koehnemann, the 2004 NCAArunners-up in the event, as the league lead-ers in the 4x100m relay.

KEEPING UP WITH JONESTravis Jones also is having a stellar start

to his outdoor season as he has enteredfive events in two meets and posted re-gional qualifying marks in all five. So far,Jones has punched his ticket to Eugene,Ore., in the hammer, shot put and discus.

ALL-AMERICANSOn March 11-12, the NCAA Champion-

ships were held in Fayetteville, Ark., with12 members of the ASU program partici-pating in the national event. When the two-day national meet concluded, four SunDevils emerged as All-Americans, includ-ing Trevell Quinley in the long jump (2nd),Domenik Peterson in the 200m dash (4th)and Brandon Glenn in the pole vault (7th)for the men and Amy Hastings in the5,000m run (5th) for the women.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICANSIncluding the 2004 cross country sea-

son, the Sun Devil track and field programwill see 11 of its student-athletes return tothe track this season following a 2004 sea-son in which they collectively earned 13All-America honors.

Outdoors, Seth Amoo, Lewis Banda,Jason Barton, Domenik Peterson andSteven Koehnemann each return follow-ing a stellar spring that saw awards earnedin both relays, as well as individual awardsfrom Banda and Barton, both in the 400m.The women’s 4x400m relay returns, minusone runner. Christina Hardeman,Cassandra Reed and Kandace Tuckerwere members of the relay while the thirdleg, Marcia Smith, graduated. JaquelynJohnson also returns after garnering thenational honor in the heptathlon.

A trio of cross country runners with All-America honors return to the track this year, including two-time award honoree Amy

KRAFT BY THE NUMBERSKRAFT BY THE NUMBERSKRAFT BY THE NUMBERSKRAFT BY THE NUMBERSKRAFT BY THE NUMBERSUnder the guidance of Coach Kraft, theSun Devils have produced (all totals re-flect combined men and women):• 1 Individual NCAA Champion• 49 Individual All-Americans• 13 Relay All-Americans• 10 Cross Country All-Americans• 28 Individual Pac-10 Champions• 6 Relay Pac-10 Champions• 4 NCAA West Region Champions• 5 NCAA West Relay Champions• 38 School Records

Greg Kraft is entering his ninth seasonas the Director of Track and Field at Ari-zona State University. In his tenure, he hasguided numerous student-athletes to All-American accolades, conference champi-onships and school records.

The 2004 track and field season markedthe first time an ASU athlete under Kraftwon a national title as freshman JacquelynJohnson brought home gold in theheptathlon. Johnson also finished secondindoors (pentathlon) and won the Pac-10title in the heptathlon and high jump.

He also has overseen the developmentof several Olympic athletes, includingDwight Phillips, the winner of the long jumpat the 2004 Athens games. Phillips, theworld leader throughout the season, wonthe gold on his first jump. The 2004 Gamesalso saw a pair of Kraft-coached athletesadvance to Athens. Lewis Banda finishedninth in the 400m dash as he representedZimbabwe while Michael Campbell repre-sented Jamaica in the 4x400m relay.

Hastings. She is joined by Desiree Davilaand Aaron Aguayo.

LONG JUMP SUCCESSArizona State long jumping has seen

success in the past year with two solid fin-ishes in competitive meets. Most recently,Trevell Quinley finished second at theNCAA Indoor Championships with a leapof 7.92m (26-00.00) and earned the thirdAll-America honor of his career. Sevenmonths prior to Quinley’s performance, former Sun Devil jumper Dwight Phillipscaptured gold at the Athens Olympics witha mark of 8.59m (28-02.25).

IT’S BEEN A LITTLE WHILE SINCE ...Brandon Glenn finished seventh in the

indoor pole vault competition at the NCAAmeet (March 11) to capture his first All-America honor. Glenn’s accolade also wasthe first since 1994 when Nick Hysongcaptured the national honor. That sameyear, Glenn was nine years old.

And speaking of Hysong, the 2000 Olym-pic Gold Medalist competed in the BaldyCastillo Invitational over the weekend andwon the event with a clearance of 5.15m.Although the winning mark was not closeto his personal best and school recordclearances, the result still goes down as aSun Angel Stadium record, surpassing the5.10m clearance attained by a trio of men.

A TRIPLE CROWN ... OF SORTSAmy Hastings is two-thirds of the way

toward history following her All-Americanperformance at the NCAA Indoor Champi-onships (March 11) where she placed sev-enth in the 5,000m run. Prior to the trackseason, she garnered the accolade incross country. If she attains All-Americahonors during this outdoor season, shewould do what only one other Sun Devil, male or female, has ever done: earn All-America honors in cross country, indoorand outdoor track in one season.

Lisa Aguilera is the only runner (so far)in school history to pull off the ‘triple crown’as she earned the national honor in 2000.She finished fifth at the NCAA cross coun-try meet before placing seventh in the in-door mile and 8th in the outdoor 1,500m.

NATIONAL RECORDLast season, Seth Amoo helped the

men’s 4x400m relay set the NCAA colle-giate national record in the indoor versionof the race as he and his teammatesclocked a 3:03.43 at the Iowa State LastChance meet. Feb. 11, Amoo, the formerschool record holder in the 200m dash, set

a national record on his own by finishingsecond in the 200m at the Holiday InnTeam Invitational in 20.95. The time madehim the first representative of Ghana to rununder 21 seconds, giving the senior thenational record.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO ...On Jan. 29, while the team was not com-

peting, junior All-American and 2004 Olym-pian Lewis Banda returned to his nativeZimbabwe where he was honored as thenation’s Sportsman of the Year. Banda, thetwo-time defending Pac-10 champion at400m, finished ninth at the Summer Olym-piad after helping the Sun Devil men to atie for 10th at the national meet and an-choring the 2004 NCAA runner-up 4x100mrelay team.

2005 SUN DEVIL MEN’S ROSTERALL RECORDS GO THROUGH JBLooking over the men’s record book for

the indoor season, several impressivethings standout. One of those is the men’s4x400m relay of Jason Barton, SteveFitch, Seth Amoo and DomenikPeterson, who stand No. 1 on the lists witha collegiate record 3:03.43. Looking at allfive of the top times for the relay event, one name keeps appearing: Jason Barton. In his four years in Tempe, Barton hashelped his teammates record the fastesttimes around while securing All-Americahonors and conference championships.

TAKING OVERThe indoor men’s 200m dash record sec-

tion looks almost like a shortened versionof the team roster as all five ranks are cur-rently occupied by student-athletes on the2005 team roster. Domenik Petersonleads the group at 20.43 set this seasonwhile placing fourth at the NCAA meet.

Seth Amoo (20.95) and Lewis Banda(21.19) are second and fourth, respectively. The marks by Amoo and Banda are theoldest on the current list as both wereachieved in the 2003 season. The remain-ing two marks were both attained in Flag-staff two weeks ago with Kelvin Love(21.15) and Steven Koehnemann (21.24)sitting third and fifth, respectively.

JOHNSON TAKES INDIVIDUAL TITLENo Sun Devil had brought home a na-

tion title since 1996. No woman had doneso since 1992. That all changed when truefreshman Jacquelyn Johnson went toAustin, Texas, and won the NCAAheptathlon crown. Johnson showed whyshe was touted as one of the premier ath-letes in the nation as she finished first atthe outdoor national meet in the heptathlon, second in the national indoor pentathlonand added conference championships inboth the heptathlon and the high jump.Johnson did not compete during the indoorseason this year as she was playing forCharlie Turner Thorne and the Sun Devilwomen’s basketball team. ASU advancedto the Sweet 16 of the tournament.

HISTORICAL HARRIERAmy Hastings accomplished a feat that

no other Sun Devil cross country student-athlete, male or female, had in school his-tory: win a conference title. Hastings ledthe women to a runner-up team finish asshe won the Pac-10 championship crown, and earning the first conference gold of anykind for the program as neither the mennor women have won a team title either.

MAROON AND GOLD (MEDAL)Arizona State was represented by one

current and two former student-athletes atthe Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.Lewis Banda, who is the lone current run-ner, competed for Zimbabwe in the 400mdash and finished in ninth place, one spotshy of making the finals on the largeststage of athletics.

Although Banda fared well, one formerathlete stole the spotlight. Dwight Phillips, the world leader in the long jump for theentire year, did not disappoint as he wonthe gold medal on his first jump of the com-petition. His win was the 10th gold medalwon by a Sun Devil track and field athleteand also marked the third Summer Olym-piad in a row that a former ASU standout

returned home with gold after NickHysong won the pole vault in 2000 andMaicel Malone helped the 4x400m relaywin in Atlanta in 1996.

The final 2004 Olympian with ASU tieswas Michael Campbell. Representing Ja-maica, Campbell ran in the 4x400m relay, but his team was disqualified in the firstround of competition.
