Senior Class Plans on Starting New Winning Tradition
A veteran Quaker basketball team will take the floor for the 2005-2006 season under new head coach Brian Anglim. After a frustrating 2004-2005 season, eight seniors are excited and focused on a new start and a new direction for the basketball program.
Brian Anglim returns to Friends after a four-year hiatus. Coach Anglim led the Friends junior varsity team in 1999 and 2000, winning two state championships in his only two seasons at Friends. His return has created a buzz on campus and amongst the alumni. Coach Anglim revealed, “I am fortunate that this opportunity at Friends presented itself to me. The environment at this school is just amazing and it’s a pleasure to work with such special kids and faculty members. I have every belief that we will return to the high level of basketball excellence that this program once exuded.”
The Quakers had a productive summer preparing for the upcoming season. Holding open gym scrimmages throughout the summer, the new coaching staff had the opportunity to work with the players in instilling the philosophies and systems for the upcoming season. “These open gym periods were a great opportunity for the team to understand my expectations and for me to learn about them as players. As a staff we were able to start putting in the basic concepts of our full court pressure man-to-man defense and our fast break style of offense.” explains Coach Anglim. Players also participated in their own individual development workouts, basketball camps, and many competed on various AAU basketball teams.
The Quakers return eight seniors and three starters from last year’s team. The team is highlighted by second-team All-Conference guard Patrick Sissman. Patrick has been on the varsity team since his freshman year and is on the verge of eclipsing the 1,000 point barrier. The backcourt will be rounded out with speedy senior point guard Maxxwell Davis and talented sophomore combination guard Justin Prushansky. At the swing position, the Quakers show great depth with rapidly improving Ronald Johnson, sharpshooter Jon Alston, and last year’s starter Tommy Adolph, who is recovering from a serious injury. Combination forward Phil Bartolini’s versatility will be a great asset to the team as he is equally skilled playing on the inside and outside and has tremendous passing abilities. The post positions will be manned by shot-blocking senior Max Hammaker, physical banger sophomore Tommy Goldman, athletic and intense senior Bo Heitz, and the silky smooth sophomore Joe Richardson. “I really like the depth of our team”, says Anglim “It should lead to some competitive practices and allow us to play a fast paced style of basketball. If the experienced seniors and these three talented sophomores can mesh as a team we could be the first Friends team to ever qualify for the MIAA B Conference playoffs. It’s an achievable goal.”
