1976 James G. Benjamin was inducted as the chairperson ofthe Real Estate Section of the Colorado Bar Association in2004 and was the program chair for the 22nd AnnualColorado Real Estate Symposium.

1977 Jason G. Landess was appointed independent counselof Broadleaf Capital Partners Inc. Lawrence E. Leone isserving his second year as a trustee of the Los AngelesCounty Bar Association. He formerly chaired its Family LawSection. Leone was also named an editor of The Family LawSection News and Review and a contributor to CaliforniaFamily Law Monthly.

1979 Nicholas DeWitt is an arbitrator and mediator withthe American Arbitration Association and a litigation partnerat DeWitt, Denney & Painter, LLP in Glendale, Calif. MarkStern became of counsel to Bleakley, Platt & Schmidt, LLPin 2004.

1980 Barry S. Andrews was appointed to lead UnocalCorporation's worldwide geothermal businesses. He alsoassumes the additional positions of president and generalmanager of Unocal Geothermal of Indonesia, Ltd. andvice president and general manager of Magma NusantaraLimited. Andrews served as president of PhilippineGeothermal, Inc., Unocal's local subsidiary, since 2002.Edythe l. Bronston, chair-elect of the California ReceiversForum, a statewide organization of which she is a foundingdirector, produced a two-day seminar in conjunction withLoyola Law School in October entitled, "Receiverships in theNew Millennium: Part 11." David Ettinger was one of four del-egates elected to represent California's 24th CongressionalDistrict at the Democratic National Convention. Noah D.Rosenberg was appointed to the advisory board of Kennan& Associates, the largest privately held brokerage firm inCalifornia. Rosenberg was also named one of the leadingmanaged care attorneys in the U.S. by the National LawJournal and one of the leading healthcare attorneys in theU.S. by the California Law Business Journal. George Snyderretired from the Orange County law firm of Walsworth,Franklin, Bevins & McCall and relocated with his wife DeDeto Woodinville, Wash., a suburb of Seattle. Snyder continuesto practice as a consultant.

1981 Richard K. Foster is a partner at Cameron, Pearlson &Foster in Long Beach, Calif. He chaired the local organizingcommittee for the 2004 Olympic Swim Trials in Long Beach,and is currently serving as the president of U.S.A Waterpolo,the sport's national governing body. Foster also teaches a /sports law class for the Sports Management Masters Programat Cal State Long Beach.

1983 Jeffrey Lapin was appointed to Mobile Scope'ssupervisory board. Mobile Scope develops and publishesinteractive entertainment software for a variety of wirelessdevices and network operators. Beforehand, Lapin wasthe chief executive officer and director of Take-TwoInteractive Software, Inc. Mark Terman, a partner withReish Luftman Reicher & Cohen, was appointed outsidegeneral counsel and to the Board of Directors of theUCLA Alumni Association.

1984 Charles G. Smith, a volunteer with the AmericanCancer Society for 10 years, was named chair-elect of theLos Angeles Region of the American Cancer Society.

1984 M. Katharine Davidson joined Alschuler, Grossman,Stein & Kahan as a tax partner in the firm's transactionaldepartment. Davidson was formerly with Pillsbury Winthrop,where she was a tax partner and co-leader of the Mediaand Entertainment Industry Team.

1986 Gisselle Acevedo-Franco was appointed presidentof the Los Angeles edition of Hoy, a Spanish-languagedaily newspaper published by the Tribune Company witheditions in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. NealMarder was appointed litigation department chair ofWinston and Strawn's Los Angeles office and to thefirm's compensation committee.

1987 Dan Coonan was named Santa Clara University's directorof athi'etics and recreation after serving nine years as theassistant athletic director at the University of California,Berkeley. Dan Goodkin is a partner with Van Etten, Suzumoto,

& Becket, specializing in real estate and construction litigation.He was recently named editor of the Real Property Reviewfor the Real Estate Section of the Los Angeles CountyBar Association.

1989 Paul Anderson joined Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Marmaroas of counsel in its government, land use, environment andenergy department in Los Angeles. Consumer attorneyBrian S. Kabateck merged his practice, Kabateck & Garris,with Pasadena's Brown & Kellner. The new firm, KabateckBrown & Kellner, LLP,is located in downtown LosAngeles.Geoffrey Plowden was the goalkeeper for the winning LosAngeles Blues at the 12th Annual Fiesta Soccer Tournamentin Santa Barbara. Plowden also completed his third year atthe Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, where he representsLos Angeles Police Department officers in civil rights casesinthe U.S. Central District Court.

1991 Julie Crane was named general counsel of theAlameda County Employees Retirement Association, a$4 billion dollar public pension fund. Kenneth T. Demmerleis a partner at Dinnebier, Demmerle & Werts in Tustin, Calif.Carol Hampton was promoted to vice president, litigationcounsel, at Universal Studios, Inc. Mark J. Kelson joinedManatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP as partner. Daniel Parsons,who specializes in elder law and estate planning, becamea member of Ariano, Hardy, Nyuli, Johnson, Richmond,Parsons & Goettel in Elgin, Illinois.

1992 Rick Distaso is a senior deputy district attorney inStanislaus County in California.

1993 Paul Estuar is a partner at Litt, Estuar, Harrison, Miller& Kitson, LLPof LosAngeles, where he specializes in civilrights litigation. Molly White was appointed trial attorneywith the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission's PacificRegional Office in Los Angeles.

1994 Jonathan Zelnik was named acting senior counsel forthe Internal Revenue Service Office of the Chief Counsel. Inthis role, Zelnik is the primary advisor to the chief counselon abusive tax transactions.

1995 Alan R. Diamante, an immigration attorney, waselected president of the Mexican American Bar Association.Stephen Reed Baker was promoted to vice-president andregulatory counsel for Fidelity National Financial, Inc.

1996 Earlier this year, RJ. Comer became a partner at theLos Angeles office of Allen, Matkins, Leck, Gamble & Mallory.Cary Hall accepted a position as assistant general counsel atU-Hall International in Phoenix, Ariz., where he will manageproduct liability and commercial litigation.

1997 Olegario "Ollie" Cantos VII now serves in the CivilRights Division of the Department of Justice. Until thisappointment, he was the first-ever general counsel anddirector of programs for the American Association of Peoplewith Disabilities. Greg Garman is a bankruptcy attorney atGordon & Silver, Ltd. in Las Vegas, helping to revive ailingbusinesses, ranging from the Stratosphere Hotel Casino tothe Aladdin Casino and Resort.

1998 Darcy Miramontes works in commercial real estatewith Grubb & Ellis/BREin San Diego, specializing in multi-family investments. She is a top 10 producer in the company.. Zach Wechsler, formerly a deputy attorney general with theCalifornia Department of Justice, opened The Law Officesof Zachary D. Wechsler near LAX. The firm will focus onemployment law, business and real estate transactions,general litigation, appeals and DUI defense.

1999 Steven Avila is serving as co-director of Citibank'sLatino Initiative in California. James M. Winner, U.S.Air Forcecaptain, was promoted to major. Major Winner is on activeduty with the Air Force JAG Corps, serving as an appellatedefense counsel and representing clients before the Air ForceCourt of Criminal Appeals, U.S. Court of Appeals for theArmed Forces and U.S. Supreme Court.

2001 Barak J. Berlin joined Keller Williams Realty in Marina DelRey,Calif., the fifthlarqest real estate agency in the country.

2002 Katherine Harwood was elected to the California BarAssociation, CYLA Board of Governors for District 7.

2003 James Gilliam chairs the Sexual Orientation BiasCommittee for the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

JUDICIAL REVIEW Hon. PeterS. Smith '60 wrote anaward-winning novel, The Magistrates, which chroniclesthe lives and careers of three politically disparate LosAngeles judges in the 1960s. Hon. Margaret GJignon '77,a justice on LosAngeles's Second District Court of Appeal forthe past 14 years, will retire from the bench in December2004 and will resume a private law practice. First appointedto the bench in 1984, Grignon authored more than 2,200opinions, of which at least 156 were published. Hon. DonaldE. Hanson, Jr. '73 was named Los Angeles County's Judge ProTempore of the Year in 2004. Hanson is a retired lieutenantcolonel in the U.S.Army Reserve. Richard A. Honn '78 wasreappointed to a six-year term as a judge on the State BarCourt and was sworn in in November. Hon. Rolf M. Treu '74handles the general civil calendar for Department 58 of theStanley Mosk (County) Courthouse. Hon. J. Stephen Czuleger'77 was elected by judges of the L9SAngeles Superior Courtas their assistant presiding judge. Joy A. McDonald '86 wasappointed a judge for the Board of Veterans' Appeals, whereshe has worked since 1991.

CELEBRATES 10TH

ANNIVERSARY

The Center for ConflictResolution celebrated its decade of service onOctober 14, 2004 at an on-campus reception. TheCenter launched in 1994 as a way for Loyola LawSchool to reach out to the community following

the riots a year earlier. Since then, the Centerassisted nearly 25,000 people without accessto the traditional justice system, working toresolve disputes through its mediation andconciliation services.

Ali Jahangiri '02 chairsthe committee that established the chapter, co-chaired by Farzad Abdollahi '01, Jeffrey Sklar '01,Nick Ebrahimian '01 and Roksana Ghodsian '00.

Zentaro Ebert is now 12 years old. The couple married21 years ago in Kyoto, Japan, where Kitagawa was the thirdand last American lawyer to have earned an LL.M. fromKyoto University. Kitagawa and Ebert work together inIrvine, and their firm serves many Japanese companies inthe U.S.Christina Krescanko Whitaker '90 and her husband,Jim Whit.aker, announce the arrival of their third child,SarahNicole, born May 30, 2004. The familyrecently returned to California after Diulio's completion ofa clerkship with the Hon. Christine O.c. Miller of the U.S.Court of Federal Claims.

IN MEMORIAM Steven M. Martin '49 passed away onSeptember 24, 2004 in his Torrance home. Martin beganhis legal career at the firm of Schell & Delamer in LosAngeles, and in 1959 formed his own firm, the Law Officesof Steven M. Martin, which eventually became Martin &Swamp, APC, where he practiced for 40 years. He playedhockey for the Los Angeles Monarchs and was an avid fan ofthe Los Angeles Kings and Notre Dame football. Samuel W.Gordon '71 died after a sudden illness at the age of 57, onMarch 3, 2004. A longtime resident of Santa Monica, Gordon'scareer focused on business and commercial litigation. He hadmany long-term clients with whom he was affiliated until hisdeath. Gordon is survived by his wife Harriet, and childrenStephanie and Jeff Gordon. He also leaves a brother, HiramGordon, as well as many other loving relatives. Judith A.Williams '74 died recently from illness. She was employedby the National Labor Relations Board, and was an attorneyat the University of Southern California and UCLA for manyyears. Ernest E. Sanchez '58 died on November 1, 2004.Serviceswere held for Sanchez, who is also a graduate ofLoyola Marymount University, at St. Andrews Church inPasadena. Sanchez is survived by his wife Barbara; childrenRose,Teresa, Raquel and Delia; grandchildren Michael,Trinidad, James and Marisa; and sisters Margaret Jorgensen

and Sr. Caroline Sanchez. Edmond B. Marner '60, a 34-yearveteran of the California State Attorney General's Office,died of heart failure on October 20th in Fullerton, Calif.He was 71. Marner handled casesfor the state's insurancecommissioner and tax agencies. In addition to the law,Marner also loved thoroughbred horses and became ahorse-owner after retirement.

Gerald Rosen, Loyola Law School professor and dean from1981-82, died at the age of 92. Rosen passed away in Belgium,where he was living with his wife. Rosen's relationship withLoyola was long and fruitful. He joined the faculty in 1971,and was the obvious choice for dean when Dean TheodoreBruinsma resigned. During Rosen's tenure as dean, theLoyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review wasestablished and Loyola began requiring that all studentsenroll in a lawyering skills course that is still in existencetoday, called Ethics, Counseling and Negotiation.
