Current Activities photonica.ru web-site. An online resource devoted to optics and photonics in Russia. Joint project with OSA/BMSTU Student Chapter. SPIE/RUS Chapter web-site. Creation of chapter library. Student optical laboratory, jointly with OSA/BMSTU. The project was started long ago but is still in its infancy. There was a problem with the place for the lab, which we have recently received. Now we have three optical table tops to be mounted on some bases, which must be ordered and manufactured and assembled. This is another headache. Hopefully, Max Frolov who is very energetic and who now heads the technical activities of the chapter, will be able to cope with it. Our administration is very interested in this lab, but no one cares to help us, and everybody sends Max from one staff member to another. And since BMSTU is very large indeed this takes a lot of time to find someone. Please address questions on this activity (if any) to Maxim Frolov with CC to Konstantin Karapetyan. 2. Members participation in conferences This year one member went to SPIE AM (Oleg Olkhovets) and four people went to Applied Optics 2004 conference in St.-Petersburg (Natalia Lisitsyna, Maxim Frolov, Victor Tolstoguzov and Vasily Grigoriev). Also 5 people (Natalia Lisitsyna, Valentina Koshechkina, Maxim Frolov, Oleg Olkhovets and Konstantin Karapetyan) participated in the meeting with Richard Hoover organized by MIIT Student Chapter (http://photonica.ru/oleg/index_photo.htm). 3. 3. Advice We think that SPIE's network channels have great importance for all student chapters to go beyond their borders and to see their optics studies through a worldwide spectrum. We think SPIE Digital Library is very useful for us, so we want the download limit for the students to be larger. Many international conferences are held in the United States. For Chinese students, only one student can attend the conference with SPIE’s Travel Grant, so we would like the travel grant for Chinese students to increase more than for other chapters. ST PETERSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY OF INFORMATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES, MECHANICS AND OPTICS President: Paul Petroshenko ([email protected]) Vice-President: Nikolai Makarov Treasurer: Natalya Yastrebova ([email protected]) Secretary: Alexey Zakharov Chapter Scientific Adviser: Sergey A. Kozlov ([email protected]) Current activities: In year 2004 our members worked for extending their study to the following directions: • analytical study and numerical modeling of the femtosecond supercontinuum

generation; • analytical study and numerical modeling of a few-cycle pulses self-focusing; • investigation of low-coherent interferometry; • holographic technologies for artificial intelligence creation; • theoretical investigation of electromagnetic properties of the microwave photonic

band-gap materials formed by periodic 3D lattices of dielectric or metallic inclusions; etc.

All our members took part in organization of the third annual SPIE Student Chapters’ Seminar, which was the part of the International Optical Congress “Fundamental problems of optics”, held on 18-21 October 2004 at Saint-Petersburg, Russia (www.ifmo.ru/bpo2004). It was a meeting of chapters from: Saint-Petersburg State University of Informational Technologies, Mechanics and Optics University (ITMO), M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), Saratov State University. P.A. Petroshenko (University ITMO) and V.O. Militsin (MSU) were chairs of the meeting, N.V. Yastrebova (University ITMO) was scientific secretary. The meeting was very successful (http://ysa.ifmo.ru/spie/MEETINGS/OPTICS-2004/Spie2004.pps). It was a great opportunity to communicate with members from the chapters of different cities, exchange the experience, discuss results and problems and talk over future collaboration. It is good that one of the officers can participate at the SPIE Annual Meeting, traditionally organized in the USA, but our Seminar can give the other members (mainly from the countries of the former Soviet Union) opportunity to travel and to meet new friends from other chapters. It is important that we invite everybody; so several members from the one chapter can attend the Seminar, because the expenses for it are not large. Guests of our seminar not only made reports, but also had the possibility to take master-class on holography in Faculty of photonics and optoinformatics (University ITMO), which was based on the new courses on the latest trends in dynamic holography and optical devices development. We should mention an excellent cultural program: theatre, excursions at Saint-Petersburg, meeting party and so on. Photos from the meeting are on our site. His report was focused on a unique media with negative refraction index, so called left-handed media, which have become popular in solid-state physics, material science, optics and applied electromagnetism in the past two years. The appearance of this new material will lead to a revolution in the history of applied technology. For instance, the replacement of traditional electronics-crystala by optical crystals have introduced people to a new optical era. This is the same with negative-index media, with a wide range of application in the future. Left-handed media can be used to filter, control and focus microwaves, and possibly be used in new wave-guides and fibers. Prof. Zhuang’s wonderful lecture excited all the students in our chapter and we were encouraged to be devoted to optical science and discovering a new world. 2. Plant/facility tours Time: September 10th, 2004 Place: Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics Visitors: 11 Students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University SPIE Student Chapter On September 10th, the students set off for Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, which is located in No.390, Qinghe Road, Jiading, Shanghai. UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA/CREOL President: Charles Middleton ([email protected]) Vice-President: Yi-Hsin Lin ([email protected]) Secretary: Costin Curatu ([email protected]) Treasurer: Christopher Middlebrook ([email protected]) The SPIE Student Chapter at CREOL/College of Optics and Photonics and Florida Photonics Center of Excellence (FPCE) at the University of Central Florida is an integral part of the CREOL Association of Optics Students (CAOS) and is working in synergy with the student chapters of OSA and IEEE/LEOS in a continuing effort to lead and coordinate the activities related to optics and photonics at the University of Central Florida. An important aspect of the SPIE CREOL/UCF Student Chapter is that being part of CREOL/FPCE it participates actively in all student events. During 2004, SPIE CREOL/UCF Student Chapter, in association with CAOS, OSA and IEEE/LEOS Student Chapters, participated in organizing various academic and social events. SPIE CREOL/UCF Student Chapter is also working closely with the UCF Student Government Association (SGA) through our CREOL CAOS Senator, representing the School of Optics in the UCF Senate. Chapter activities since last report: • Organization of the 2004 UCF Optics Day, a major UCF event sponsored by the

Student Government Association and promoting the fields of Optics and Photonics among the UCF student body. This initiative was once again successful in its second year.

• Organization of the CREOL Industrial Affiliates Day: one of the major events in the establishment of long-term partnership between the optics industry in Florida and the US and the University of Central Florida/CREOL/FPCE.

• Organization of the 2004 annual CREOL “Spring Thing”: a major social event held by the UCF Vice President of Research and aimed at introducing CREOL faculty and students to various members of the regional and national optics industry, establishment of CREOL students’ community and recruiting of new optics students.

• Organization of the 2004 annual CREOL “Fall Picnic”: another major social event aimed at introducing the newly admitted CREOL students to their peers and CREOL Faculty members.

• 2004 Student of the year award: this award is intended to recognize outstanding academic and scientific achievements of the graduate students within the School of Optics/CREOL. The winner of the award received a Graduate Fellowship Enhancement in the amount of $500 provided by the School of Optics/CREOL and a certificate of achievements. The finalists received a Graduate Fellowship Enhancement in the amount of $100.

• 2004 CAOS Teacher of the year award: every year CREOL students are asked to nominate and vote for the professor who overall impressed them the most in class (laboratory) in terms of clarity of the message, lecture flowing, availability outside class, handouts, feedback on homework and exams, fairness in grading, etc.

• Organization of the 2004 annual Thanksgiving dinner and 2004 CREOL Christmas Party for CREOL students, staff, faculty members, board members, alumni and affiliates.

• Student mentoring: In 2004/2005 Academic Year SPIE Student Chapter, along with CAOS, OSA and IEEE/LEOS established student mentoring for students planning to take their Ph.D. qualification exam. Through this initiative senior Ph.D. students are mentoring students who are in the process of preparation for their qualification examination.

• Qualifier Study Sessions: To help students prepare for their qualifier exam, study sessions were organized so that older students could answer questions and help younger students to prepare both academically and psychologically for the exam. These sessions were incredibly successful: 100% of the students who attended more than one of the eight meetings passed the qualifier in August 2004.

• Numerous tours of CREOL for visitors ranging from middle/high school students to industrial affiliates and faculty members.

• Election of new officers in August: Charles Middleton, President; Yi-Hsin Lin, Vice President; Costin Curatu, Secretary; Christopher Middlebrook, Treasurer.

• Chapter meeting to form committees to increase student member participation in activities: with pizza paid for by SGA, we held a meeting for current and prospective SPIE members to discuss future chapter activities. We then called for volunteers to serve as committee chairs for the future activities, in an effort to involve more students (traditionally, the elected officers do all of the work and regular student members miss out on chances to learn and serve). Committee chairs will be able to draw on SPIE student chapter members to form ad hoc committees as activities approach and more help is needed. The response was very encouraging, with four volunteers who have never been involved in student chapter activities, and five new members joining as a result.

Aziz mentioned the success of the Wright-STEPP program for 10th grade students held during the last school year in cooperation with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), where students were introduced to the concepts of laser radiation, polarization, and spectroscopy. He also talked about the Optics Education Kit received from SPIE for the purpose of educational outreach. Aziz and Patrick Berry mentioned the usefulness of videos such as the included IR video for educating students prior to demonstrating various optics experiments. Joe Binford mentioned the idea of talking with teachers prior to presenting optics demonstrations to students in their classes. He suggested that this might encourage more teacher involvement and allow teachers to give our chapter feedback on effective ways to encourage their students to learn more about optical science and technology. Aziz mentioned the need for English speakers in the K-12 educational outreach. • Optics Tours/Speakers Aziz Mahfoud brought up ideas for arranging tours to various optics-related companies in the area. He mentioned our past visit to Kent State University to see the Liquid Crystal Institute. Ideas for possible tours included Mound Laser in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Sarangan mentioned the idea of visiting CMC Electronics in Cincinnati, with a possible entertaining trip to Paramount’s Kings Island. Joe Binford mentioned contacting 3M Precision Optics to see if a tour could be arranged. Although it wasn’t brought up, ideas for bringing speakers to UD are also welcomed. The group thought the best time to arrange these optics tours would be on Fridays beginning at 2:00 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. Mention was made to set the tour date on a day after classes are concluded this semester. The UD van could also be used for travel as long as the driver had taken the proper UD driver training.

• Other Activities Aziz Mahfoud thanked Jang Pyo Kim for creating the UD SPIE Student Chapter website, located at http://www.udayton.edu/~spie. He also encouraged other students to get involved in the development of the site. 45

SPIE can typically be $3,000 or $4,000 and as high as $10,000. Funding through LEOS may be as high as $5,000. The group agreed that applying for this funding is well worth the effort, especially since the chances are high that the funding will be granted. Dr. Sarangan mentioned that, in regard to travel grants, if SPIE awards one-third of the necessary funding, that the EO department and UD would cover the other two-thirds in most cases. Aziz and Patrick mentioned that the annual funding for the SPIE and OSA student chapters is $500 each. Dr. Sarangan mentioned that the annual funding for the LEOS student chapter is about $2000.

• Conclusion Aziz Mahfoud encouraged everyone to become more involved in the SPIE/OSA/LEOS student chapters and thanked everyone for coming. He also encouraged everyone to contact him or Patrick Berry if they had any questions or suggestions. Dr. Sarangan had brought a digital camera and took several pictures of the group in attendance. Hopefully these pictures will be posted on the SPIE student chapter website! Aziz dismissed the meeting at about 7:30 p.m.

5. K-12 Outreach Program It has been an objective for the Electro-Optics program of the University of Dayton to promote optics education through organizing experiments and demonstrations that encourage the interest in optics in the K-12 environment. In this sense, the University of Dayton’s SPIE Student Chapter’s joint effort with the Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensors Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials Directorate, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and the University of Dayton, Electro-Optics Program was to bring a series of optics experiments and discussions to junior high school students. The students were introduced to the concepts of wavelength, frequency, polarization and light source spectrum (LED’s, lasers, incandescent bulbs, etc.). Also, the students had the opportunity to assemble a Keplerian and Galilean Telescopes. 7. Visit to Mound Laser and Photonics Center Miamisburg, Ohio, November 23, 2004 at 12:45 p.m.

• Introduction Most of the group met on campus at the University of Dayton in KL341 at 12:15 p.m. to travel by van to Mound Laser and Photonics Center, Inc. (MLPC) in Miamisburg, Ohio. Dr. Haus drove the van for our group. Upon our arrival, we met with Dr. Larry Dosser, President and CEO of MLPC, who had agreed to take us on a tour of the facility. Dr. Dosser welcomed us and explained that there are three main services provided by his company: laser welding, laser marking/engraving, and laser micromachining. He encouraged all of us to feel free to look around during the tour and ask any questions that came to mind.

• Laser Welding Dr. Dosser first brought us to the laser welding area where two of the employees explained the laser welding services provided to their customers. Their primary system consists of a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser with 220 W of optical power at 1064 nm that incorporates a 600 µm fused silica step-index optical fiber to deliver the power to the target weld area with a "top hat" beam profile. The target piece is mounted on a 4-axis assembly (3-D translation plus one

Page 50: 2004 Student Chapter Report - Finalspie.org/Documents/Students/StudentChapter_Reports...The Brunel SPIE student chapter was created in January 2004. Currently, we are fifteen members

50

rotation axis) for accurate positioning of the region to be welded. The employees explained that this laser system uses relatively long pulse widths to achieve proper welds and is commonly requested for components in medical and automotive devices.

• Laser Marking/Engraving Next, Dr. Dosser brought our group to see the laser marking/engraving area. Dr. Dosser explained the use of the two primary laser marking systems consisting of 1064 nm Nd: YAG lasers. Both systems incorporate an x-y galvanometer scanning subassembly with an f-theta field lens to raster the beam over the desired target regions of the sample to be marked. Both systems have 4-axis assemblies for mounting parts to be marked. The first system Dr. Dosser showed us produced a beam with about 70-75 W of optical power. The other system produces a power of 90 W. Dr. Dosser mentioned that these systems take off the top layer of material up to a 1 mm depth. Components can be engraved up to a 0.020" depth. Some typical materials that can be marked or engraved with a laser include anodized aluminum, graphite, and various plastics. The markings that can be made with these systems include logos, 1-D and 2-D barcodes, and alpha-numeric characters. • Laser Micromachining Finally, Dr. Dosser brought our group to see the laser micromachining area. There, several of the employees explained the processes used in micromachining components for their customers. They explained that the laser micromachining system consists of a neodymium-doped yttrium vanadate (Nd: YVO4) laser crystal pumped with the fiber-delivered light from a laser diode array. The laser system produces 18 W of power at 1064 nm, but is frequency-tripled with the crystal to produce the third harmonic at 355 nm. The power at 355 nm is typically 4.5 W with a pulse frequency of 20 kHz, operating at just above threshold. At the 355 nm wavelength, the beam can be focused to a 13-micron spot on the component to be micromachined. Again, a 4-axis assembly is used to properly position the sample while a telecentric f-theta lens system following an x-y galvanometer assembly is used to maintain the rastered beam's orthogonality and field flatness to the machining plane. The employees explained that the low pulse energy and high pulse rate were found to perform better for laser micromachining applications. For large components, they explained that stitching algorithms were used to perform micromachining on areas larger than 2" by 2", stating that stitching errors were minimized by accurately characterizing the system operation. They also discussed the use of a laser sensor for accurately mapping surfaces that were to be machined. The resolution for this laser micromachining system is ±0.5 µm with a minimum feature size of 10 µm. • Conclusion Overall, our group really enjoyed the tour of MLPC given by Dr. Larry Dosser and thanked him for giving us the opportunity to learn more about his company and the innovative optics work that is being done there. He encouraged us to become more involved in the optics community and to look for opportunities that enhance our professional growth. We took some group photographs and left MLPC at around 2:15 p.m. Most of us stayed to visit the Native American mound for which the site is named. After taking some pictures, we adjourned and returned to the University of Dayton campus at around 3 p.m. More information about MLPC can be found on their website at http://www.mlpc.com on the Internet.
