Tire inflation pressure

Checking tire pressures

Tire pressures in psi/kilopascal areshown on the driver's door post and arevisible when the door is open.

Only check the tire inflation pressuresof cold tires. This means after driving amaximum of 1.25 miles/2 km or afterthe vehicle has been parked for at least2 hours. Warm tires have higher infla-tion pressures.

In the following tire inflation pressure

table, all pressures are specified in thestandard units of pressure, psi and kilo-pascal, and apply to cold tires, i.e. tiresat ambient temperature.

After correcting the tire inflation pres-sure, reinitialize the Flat Tire Monitor sothat it can monitor the tire inflationpressure, refer to page 87.

Check the tire pressures on a reg-ular basis – at least twice a month

– and before every extended journey. If

this is not done, incorrect tire pressurescan cause driving instability and tiredamage, ultimately resulting in acci-dents.<

The key set

1 Master keys with remote control unit– these keys determine the functionsof the Key Memory. Refer to page 64.

You can mark the individual keys forsubsequent identification by apply-ing the colored decals that youreceived when accepting delivery ofyour vehicle

In every master key with remote

control there is an extended-lifebattery that is charged automatically inthe ignition lock as you drive. For this reason, if you have a masterkey with remote control that is other-wise not used, use that key at leastonce every year while driving for an

extended period to charge the bat-tery.<

2 Spare key – for storage in a safeplace, such as in your wallet. This keyis not intended for constant use. The

luggage compartment lid and theglove compartment cannot be lockedand unlocked with this key. This isuseful for valet parking, for example.

g y

The concept

The central locking system engagesand releases the following locks at thesame time:

>doors> luggage compartment lid> fuel filler door and>glove compartment.

The central locking system is ready for

operation whenever the driver's door isclosed.

The central locking system can beoperated

> from outside via the door lock andusing the remote control

> from inside via the central lockingsystem button.

If it is operated from inside, the fuelfiller door will not be locked, refer topage 34.

Operating it from outside simulta-neously activates the anti-theft system,

which prevents the doors from beingunlocked via the door lock buttons orthe door release handles.

The central locking system unlocksautomatically in the event of an acci-dent. In addition, the hazard warningflashers and interior lamps come on.

For driving that is relaxed and less likelyto cause fatigue, you should select asitting position that reflects your per-

sonal requirements. In combinationwith the safety belts and airbags, thecorrect seating position also plays animportant role in enhancing occupantsafety in the event of an accident. Toensure that the vehicle's safety systemsprovide you with optimal protection, we

request that you direct your carefulattention to the following section.

For supplementary information ontransporting children, refer to page 58.

Sitting safely with airbags

Always maintain an adequate dis-

tance between yourself and theairbags. Always hold the steering wheelby the rim to keep any chance of injuryto hands or arms to an absolute mini-mum should the airbag be deployed.Never allow any objects, individuals oranimals to obstruct the areas between

passengers and airbags. Never use thefront airbag's cover as a storage tray orsupport for objects of any kind. Neverallow front passengers to rest their feetor legs on the airbag cover.<

For airbag locations and additionalinformation on airbags, refer topage 55.

Sitting safely with safety belts

Your vehicle is equipped with fourseats, each of which is provided with asafety belt.

Never allow more than one personto wear a single safety belt. Never

allow infants or small children to ride in

a passenger's lap. Avoid twisting thebelt while routing it firmly across thepelvis and shoulder, wear it as snuglyagainst your body as possible. Do notallow the belt to rest against hard orfragile objects in your pockets. Do notroute the belt across your neck, or run it

across sharp edges. Be sure that thebelt does not become caught or jammed. Avoid wearing bulky clothingand pull on the lap belt periodically toretension it over your shoulders. In theevent of a frontal impact, a loose lapbelt could slide over the hips, leading to

abdominal injury. In addition, the safetybelt's restraint effectiveness is reducedif the belt is worn loosely. Expectantmothers should always wear theirsafety belts, taking care to position thelap belt against the lower hips, where itwill not exert pressure against the

abdominal area.<

For information on using the safetybelts, refer to page 50.

ate child-restraint systems; larger chil-dren and adults using the safety belts.Never let an occupant's head rest nearor on a side airbag because the inflatingairbag could cause a serious or fatalinjury. Please note that the word Airbagimprinted on the door trim panel indi-cates the airbag's location.Accident research shows that the saf-est place for children in an automobileis in the rear seat. However, a child sit-ting in the rear seat and not properlyrestrained may place his or her head onor near the side airbag, if so equipped. For example, a child – even thoughbelted – may fall asleep with his or herhead against the side airbag. It may bedifficult for a driver to ensure that chil-dren in the rear seat will remain prop-erly positioned at all times and notplace their heads on or near the sideairbag. Therefore, we recommend thatthe rear seat side airbags, if provided,be deactivated if you plan to transportchildren in the rear seat. The rear seat side airbags may alreadyhave been deactivated by a BMW cen-ter. Commercially available child seatscomplying with the legal standard aredesigned to be secured with a seat beltor with the seat belt portion of a combi-nation lap/shoulder belt. Improperly orinadequately installed restraint sys-tems can increase the risk of injury tochildren. Always read and follow theinstructions that come with the system.

Correct location for installing

In your BMW, all seats equipped with a

three-point safety belt – except for thedriver's seat – are suitable for installinguniversal child-restraint systems of allage classes and which have beenapproved for the age group in question.

Child-restraint system with tetherstrap

If you use a child-restraint system witha tether strap, two additional tetheranchorage points have been provided.

Depending on the location selected forseating in the rear passenger area, attach the tether strap to the corre-sponding anchorage point to secure thechild-restraint system, as shown in the

Because the backreston any rearward-facing child-restraintsystem – of the kind designed forinfants under 1 year and 20 lbs/9 kg –would be within the airbag's deploy-ment range, you should never mountsuch a device in the front passengerseat, as the impact of the airbag againstthe child restraint's backrest could leadto serious or fatal injuries. If it is necessary for a child – not aninfant – to ride in the front seat, certainprecautions should be taken. First, move the passenger seat as far awayfrom the instrument panel as possible. This important precaution is intended tomaximize the distance between the air-bag and the child. Older childrenshould be tightly secured with thesafety belt after they have outgrown abooster seat that is appropriate for theirage, height, and weight.Younger children should be secured inan appropriate forward-facing child-

properly secured with a safety belt.Never install a rearward-facing child-restraint system in the front passengerseat. We strongly urge you to carefully readand comply with the instructions forinstallation and use provided by thechild restraint's manufacturer when-ever you use such a device.Do not attempt to modify child-restraintsystems. If you do this, the protectionprovided by these systems could beimpaired.Be sure that all occupants – of all ages –remain properly and securely restrainedat all times.<

All rear seating positions in your vehiclemeet the recommendations ofSAE J1819, an industry-recommendedpractice for securing child-restraint sys-tems in motor vehicles.

Drivelogic is an automated manual

gearbox with which clutching and shift-ing is assumed by an electro-hydraulicsystem.

The SMG Drivelogic is operated via twoshift paddles on the steering wheel andthe selector lever in the center console.

It offers the following functions:

>Sequential and automated shiftingmode

>Ability to choose between differentdriving programs – Drivelogic

>Gradient assistance, refer to page 73>Upshift display and shift lights, refer

to page 74>RPM matching on downshifts>Driving dependent functions:

The respective driving situation, e.g.cornering, mountain driving or brak-ing, is detected by sensors and takeninto account for shifting, e.g. toachieve optimum gear selection dur-ing deceleration and subsequentacceleration

>Slip recognition at the rear axle forincreasing driving stability, e.g. dur-ing downshifting on slippery roadsurfaces

Under normal operating conditions, fuel

consumption is lowest when driving inthe first driving program of the auto-mated shifting mode.

Selector lever positions

R: Reverse position

N: Neutral position

Forward position with one-touch mode:

>S: sequential mode>D: automated mode>+: upshifting in sequential mode>–: downshifting in sequential mode.

The SMG Drivelogic is ready for opera-tion from ignition key position two orhigher.

For your safety, it is only possible toengage a driving position with the vehi-cle stopped approx. two seconds afterengaging position N with the footbrakedepressed – shift-lock function.

Shifting gears with shift paddles onsteering wheel:

>To upshift, briefly pull the right pad-dle +

>To downshift, briefly pull the left pad-

dle –.

Shift paddles with various widthsmatched to the shape of your

hand are available from your BMW cen-ter.<

Shifting gears with selector lever:>To upshift, pull the selector lever

backward in the '+' direction>To downshift, push the selector lever

in the '–' direction.

No automatic upshifting is carried out inthe sequential mode.

In the following situations theSMG Drivelogic anticipates youractions in the sequential mode:

>Upshifts and downshifts are only exe-cuted at appropriate combinations ofengine rpm and vehicle speed. Forinstance, downshifts that would

result in excessive engine speed arenot executed

>During a stop the gearbox is auto-matically downshifted into the firstgear so that, e.g. before a traffic light,it is only necessary to accelerate tocontinue driving

>As speed diminishes, the gearboxdownshifts automatically, without youtaking any action, just before thevehicle slows to below each gear'sminimum speed.

D - Automated mode

Each time the engine is started, theautomated mode is activated as soonas you move the selector lever into theforward driving position.

In the automated mode all forwardgears are shifted automatically.

instrument cluster, refer to page 71.

For rapid acceleration, e.g. duringpassing, depress the accelerator pedalcompletely – kickdown. The gearboxnow downshifts depending on theselected driving program.

Even in the automated mode, you can

help specify the shifting point: if a gear-dependent minimum speed isexceeded, you can upshift by slowlyreducing pressure on the acceleratorpedal. In the process, the respectivedriving situation is detected by sensorsand taken into account.

To achieve the best possible vehicleacceleration with a sporty driving stylein the sequential mode, shift lights inthe instrument cluster indicate the opti-

mum shifting point shortly before themaximum engine speed is reached.

The system optimizes vehicle stabilityduring acceleration and when startingfrom a full stop, as well as optimizingtraction. In addition, it recognizesunstable vehicle conditions, such asundersteering or oversteering, and, within physically feasible limits, helps

keeping the vehicle on a steady courseby reducing the engine speed andbrake applications to the individualwheels.

the inflation pressure of a tire falls sig-nificantly below the pressure of anothertire.

Controlling the tire pressure is basedon monitoring the rpm that the tireshave relative to each other. A flat tire is

detected and reported because the rpmsuddenly deviate drastically from oneanother.

Functional requirements

In order for the Flat Tire Monitor to learnthe correct tire inflation pressure,

please do the following:1. Check the tire inflation pressures in

all tires2. Compare them with the tire inflation

pressure table on page 25 and cor-rect them, if necessary

3. Initialize the system.

106 Cargo loading

Avoid overloading the vehicle sothat the permitted load on the tires

is not exceeded. Overloading can leadto overheating and internal tire damage.

This can result in a sudden loss of tireinflation pressure.<

4. The resulting figure equals the avail-able amount of cargo and luggageload capacity. For example, if the XXX amount

equals 1,400 lbs. and there will befive 150 lbs. passengers in your vehi-cle the amount of available cargo

Determining the maximum load

1. Locate the following statement onyour vehicle's placard*:

The combined weight of occu-pants and cargo should never

exceed XXX kg or YYY lbs., as thiscould otherwise result in damage to thevehicle or unstable driving conditions.<

2. Determine the combined weight ofthe driver and passengers that will beriding in your vehicle

3. Subtract the combined weight of thedriver and passengers fromXXX kilograms or YYY pounds

cle, the amount of available cargoand luggage load capacity is650 lbs.:1,400 lbs. minus 750 lbs. = 650 lbs.

5. Determine the combined weight of

luggage and cargo being loaded onthe vehicle. That weight may notsafely exceed the available cargoand luggage load capacity calculatedin Step 4

6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be trans-

fered to your vehicle. Consult themanual for transporting a trailer todetermine how this may reduce theavailable cargo and luggage loadcapacity of your vehicle.

Loading and driving notes

Because roof racks raise the center ofgravity of the vehicle when loaded, theyexercise a major effect on its handlingand steering response.

Make sure that the load is not too bulky, and attempt to distribute it evenly.Always load the heaviest pieces first sothat they are at the bottom. Make surethat no objects get in the way when the

luggage compartment lid is opening orclosing.

Secure the roof-mounted luggage cor-rectly and safely to prevent it from shift-ing or being lost during driving.

Drive smoothly and avoid suddenacceleration or braking. Do not cornerat high speeds.

If the brake rotors are corroded, theywill tend to respond to braking with apulsating effect that even extendedbrake applications will fail to cure.

When driving in heavy rain and on wetroads it is useful to apply light pressureto the brake pedal every few miles.

Do not coast with the clutchdepressed or with the gearshift

lever in idle. Do not coast with theengine switched off. If you do so theengine provides no braking effect andthere is no power assist for braking orsteering when the engine is not run-ning <

Wheels and tires

Tire inflation pressure

Information for your safety

The factory-approved tires are matchedto your vehicle and have been selectedto provide optimum safety and driving

comfort when used properly. It is not merely the tire's service life, butalso driving comfort and – above all else

– driving safety that depend on the con-dition of the tires and the maintenanceof the specified tire pressure.

Incorrect tire inflation pressure isa frequent cause of tire damage. It

also significantly influences the road-holding ability of your BMW. Check tireinflation pressures on a regular basis, refer to page 25, at least every twoweeks and before beginning a longer

trip. If this is not done, incorrect tirepressures can cause driving instabilityand tire damage, ultimately resulting inaccidents.<

Tire tread – tire damage

Inspect your tires frequently for treadwear, signs of damage and for foreignobjects lodged in the tread. Check thetread depth.

Tread depth should not be allowed togo below 1/8 in / 3 mm, even thoughthe legally specified minimum treaddepth is only 1/16 in / 1.6 mm.

Below 1/8 in / 3 mm tread depth, thereis a great risk of hydroplaning, even atrelatively moderate speeds and with

only small amounts of water on theroad. Tread wear indicators in thetread-groove base – see arrow – aredistributed around the wheel circumfer-ence and are labeled on the tire side-

Sustained high temperature can causethe material of the tire to degenerateand reduce tire life, and excessive tem-perature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level ofperformance which all passenger cartires must meet under the FederalMotor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109.

The date on which the tire was manu-factured is indicated by the code on thesidewall:

DOT ... 3603 indicates that the tire wasmanufactured in week 36 of the year2003.

yGrades B and A represent higher levelsof performance on the laboratory testwheel than the minimum required bylaw.

The temperature grade for this tireis established for a tire that is

properly inflated and not overloaded.Excessive speed, under-inflation, orexcessive loading, either separately orin combination, can cause heat buildup

and possible tire failure.<

Uniform Tire Quality Grading

Quality grades can be found whereapplicable on the tire sidewall betweentread shoulder and maximum section

width. For example:Treadwear 200 Traction AA

Temperature A

BMW recommends the replacement ofall tires when the tires are no more than6 years old, even if a tire life of 10 yearsis possible.

Following wheel/tire changes

Comply with the specified tire inflationpressures, and be sure to have thewheel and tire assembly balancedevery time you change a tire or wheel.

Following wheel and/or tire changesyou will need to reinitialize both thesequential M gearbox with Drivelogicand the Flat Tire Monitor, refer topages 74, 88.

122 Winter tires

Choosing the right tire

BMW recommends the use of wintertires for operation under winter roadconditions. While all-season tires – with

M+S designation – provide better wintertraction than the corresponding sum-mer tires, they generally do not achievethe performance of winter tires.

Do not exceed specifiedmaximum speeds

Never exceed the maximumspeed for which the winter tires

are rated.Unprofessional attempts by laymen toservice tires can lead to damage andaccidents

Snow chains*

Only certain snow chains have beentested by BMW and determined andapproved as roadworthy. Consult yourBMW center for more information.BMW recommends using only theseapproved fine-link snow chains. Usethem in pairs on winter tires, but only onboth rear wheels.

the performance of winter tires.

In the interest of safe tracking andsteering response, install radial tiresmade by the same manufacturer and

with the same tread configuration on allfour wheels if you elect to mount wintertires.

When mounting winter wheels, observe the different recesses of

the front and rear wheels, as otherwise

damage may result.<

accidents.Have this work performed by skilledprofessionals only. Your BMW centerwill be glad to assist you with both their

expertise and the proper equipment foryour vehicle.<

Tire condition, tire pressure

At tread depths below approx. 3/16 in /4 mm, tire performance under winterdriving conditions deteriorates notice-

ably. Worn tires should therefore bereplaced for safety considerations.

Comply with the specified tire inflationpressures, and be sure to have thewheel and tire assembly balancedevery time you change a tire or wheel.

Comply with all manufacturer's safetyprecautions when mounting the chains.Do not exceed a speed of 30 mph /

50 km/h with snow chains. After mounting or removing snowchains, always reinitialize the sequentialM gearbox with Drivelogic, refer topage 88.

It is not possible to mount snow

chains on tires with 18- and 19-inch wheels.Deactivate the Flat Tire Monitor whenusing snow chains. Malfunction warn-ings and undetected losses in pressureare a possibility when driving with snowchains.

Adding engine oil

Only add engine oil when the oil levelhas dropped to just above the lowermark on the dipstick.

Do not fill beyond the upper mark onthe dipstick. Excess oil will damage the

engine.

Before checking the engine oil levelafter topping up, restart the engine andallow it to run to obtain a correct dis-play. Then proceed as described underChecking the oil level.

BMW engines are designed tooperate without oil additives; the

use of additives could lead to damagein some cases. This also applies to themanual transmission, the differential, and the power steering system.<

Store oils, grease and similar materialsso that they are inaccessible to chil-dren. Comply with warning labels andinformation on containers.<

Comply with the applicable envi-ronmental laws regulating the dis-

posal of used oil.<

137Lamps and bulbs

The lamps and bulbs make essentialcontributions to the safety of your vehi-cle. Therefore, proceed carefully whenhandling bulbs. BMW recommends thatyou have such work performed by your

BMW center if you are not familiar withthe procedures.

Do not touch the glass portion ofa new bulb with your bare hands

Low beams and high beams

>Low beams: H7 bulb, 55 watts>High beams: H7 bulb, 55 watts

The H7 bulb is pressurized. There-fore, wear safety glasses and pro-

tective gloves. Failure to comply withthis precaution could lead to injury if thebulb is damaged.<

Because of the extremely highvoltages involved, any work on the

xenon lighting system, including bulb-changing, should be carried out bytechnically qualified personnel only.

Otherwise, there is a risk of fatalinjury.<
