2003 Season Preview

Heading into her fourth season at the helm, University ofIowa Field Hockey Coach Tracey Griesbaum will lead a verybalanced team onto the field in 2003.

The Hawkeyes will have skill from the forwards back tothe goalkeeper, with a good mix of experience and youth onevery line.

“We don’t have a single go-to player, but each line seemsto have a top-notch player as an anchor,” Griesbaum said.“The team also has a lot ofversatility, so we can throw alot of different combinationsat our opposition. Thatshould make us a hard teamto prepare for.”

FORWFORWFORWFORWFORWARDSARDSARDSARDSARDSThe forward line should be

potent for the Hawkeyes, asthey return their top-twoscoring forwards. Senior tri-captain Pattie Gillern led theteam with 14 points lastseason (six goals, twoassists), while junior SarahDawson chipped in five goals.

“We are looking for Pattieand Sarah to take charge ofthe attack,” Griesbaum said.“They have both improvedtheir game to another levelduring the offseason in terms of shots and movement.”

Junior Margot McMahon also returns to the Hawkeyeforward line. She has five career goals.

Freshmen Erica Houck, Kara Zappone and Kelly Slatteryshould also make a push for playing time.

MIDFIELDMIDFIELDMIDFIELDMIDFIELDMIDFIELDThe steadying force of the Iowa midfield will be senior tri-

captain Lindsay Miller. A member of the United StatesNational Under-23 Team and second team all-Big Ten selection,Miller recorded 12 points last season (four goals, four assists),and will be looked upon to be the field general for theHawkeyes this season.

“Lindsay must be ready to play every position in themidfield this year,” Griesbaum said. “She is going to draw alot of attention from the opposing team, so we may have tomove her around from side to side this season.”

While Miller is being moved around, it will be the task ofsophomore Debbie Birrell to fill in where her senior teammateisn’t. Birrell played in 15 games as a freshman.

With the flexibility of her team, Griesbaum may moveforward Sarah Dawson or back Lauren Stiver to the midfieldfrom time-to-time.

Freshman Heather Schnepf was a first team all-Americanin high school and will be looked upon in the midfield aswell.

BACKFIELDBACKFIELDBACKFIELDBACKFIELDBACKFIELDOnce again, the strength of the Hawkeyes will be its

defense. Second team all-Big Ten selection Lauren Stiver andsenior Jess Zosky will be the main focus of the Iowa defense.

“We’re looking atStiver and Zosky to be theanchors of our defense andkeep a very tight ship,”Griesbaum said.

With Stiver and Zoskyin the middle, Tammy Leisterand Shelby Roche will coverthe outside positions.Freshmen Taylor Webb,Caitlin Weller and HeatherSchnepf will add depth inthe backfield.

GOALKEEPINGGOALKEEPINGGOALKEEPINGGOALKEEPINGGOALKEEPINGAfter three

consecutive years ofgoalkeeping battles, theHawkeyes will enter theseason with a clear-cut No. 1goalkeeper in junior BarbWeinberg.

Weinberg was a first team all-Big Ten selection last yearafter posting a 1.21 goals against average and .796 savepercentage.

Backing her up will be freshman Courtney Moore.“We are expecting a good year out of Barb, she’s got a lot

of talent and really knows what our defense is looking for,”Griesbaum said. “It will also be great for Courtney to learnunder Barb. With us having only two goalkeepers, they willget a good opportunity to work together. Courtney is veryathletic and will compete for playing time throughout theyear.”

SCHEDULESCHEDULESCHEDULESCHEDULESCHEDULEOnce again, the Big Ten will be one of the most competitive

conferences in the country. Both Michigan State and PennState were in the Final Four last year, while traditional powersMichigan and Ohio State should be strong again.

The Hawkeyes have no cakewalk through the non-conference season either; as they open up and end withdefending national champion Wake Forest, and also take onthe powerful North Carolina Tarheels.

The Hawkeyes will have a strong defensive corps to leadthem in the 2003 season.

19 Hawkeyes Have Gone On To Play For The UnitedStates National Team

1996 Hawkeye Olympians Kris Fillat, Marcia Pankratz, AndreaWieland and Liz Tchou.

“I never would’ve made the Olympic team hadI gone somewhere else. I learned how to compete, and I developed the total package of skills (mental, physical, emotional, nutritional) needed to competeat the highest level. I often find myself relying onthe attitudes, teamwork and leadership skills Ideveloped as a player at Iowa. I had the greatestcoaches and teammates in the country looking outfor my best interest personally, socially andathletically.”

When most people think of collegiate field hockey, most of the time their thoughts go out East, where AtlanticCoast Conference and Big East schools are often seen asthe only national powerhouses.

Since most field hockey is played in areas other thanthe Midwest, the Big Ten is a conference that is easilyforgotten.

However, the Big Ten has quickly become one of thepremier field hockey conferences in the nation.

In the 20 years the conference has sponsored fieldhockey, Big Ten schools have advanced to NCAATournament play 50 times.

Last season, the Big Ten had two teams in the FinalFour for the second-consecutve year when Michigan Stateand Penn State each won regional tournaments. TheNittany Lions advanced to the championship game andwere the national runner-up.

In 2001, the Big Ten ended the year with five of itsseven teams ranked in the top 20 by the NFHCA.

Both Michigan and Michigan State represented theconference in the Final Four, and the Wolverines went onto become the second Big Ten School to win the NationalChampionship. Iowa was the first in 1986.

The Big Ten has been represented in the Final Four 18times.

The Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten Conference schools witheight Final Four appearences.

Individually, the Big Ten produced some of the topfield hockey players in the nation. In the last three seasons, the conference produced 33 NFHCA All-Americans, 12 ofwhich were on the first team.

In international play, the Big Ten has seven of itscurrent or former athletes playing on elite United StatesNational Teams.

With Indiana once again fielding a varsity team, theBig Ten now has seven field hockey teams - the most inthe history of the conference.

The Big Ten Conference began sponsoring field hockeyin 1981 with a conference tournament, then began fullleague play in 1982.

From 1989-91, five conference teams competed in theMidwest Collegiate Field Hockey Conference along withthe Northern Illinois Huskies. But when Penn State joinedup with the Big Ten in 1991, the league resumedsponsoring a conference season.

In conference play, each team now plays each otheronly once, with the season ending with the Big TenTournament. The site of the Big Ten Tournament isdetermined on a rotating basis.

“I had heard about Iowa’s powerhouse field hockey program since I was afreshman in high school, and it was where I always wanted to go.

“I looked at many other schools on the east coast and even in the Midwest, butnothing came close to the impression Iowa gave me. The coaches made me feelright at home, and all the girls were on the same page when it came to field

hockey and school. I had finally found a place where I felt comfortable, and ithad both my major (which is ranked 3rd in the nation) and an awesome athleticprogram. Even two years later, going to Iowa has been one of the best choices of

my life, and I can’t wait for it to continue, both on the field, and off.”

“We were thrilled when Lauren chose to attend the University of Iowa.Right from the start we were impressed with the University’s academicsas well as the athletic program and facilities. As parents, we felt thatIowa City was a safe place for our daughter to continue her education.

The coaches have been excellent role models for our daughter, andthey have stressed the importance of life skills as well as field

hockey. The team quickly adopted Lauren and became her familyaway from home. They truly work as a unit on and off the field,

and there was always someone ready to lend support. We arevery proud to be part of the Hawkeye Tradition.

GO HAWKS!”

“Going into my fifth year as an Iowa Hawkeye, it is impossible to imaginespending my time as a student-athlete anywhere else. My experiences on and offthe field have made my college career extremely memorable, and have allowed me

to move on from year to year without any regrets. Coming out to the Midwestfrom the East Coast was definitely intimidating, but that fear passed quickly asI was embraced by an atmosphere, athletically, academically, and personally, that has allowed me to strive for almost anything. I wouldn’t trade my statusas an Iowa Hawkeye for anything in the world, and can’t imagine any other

university that would have been able to fulfill me like this one. I feelextremely lucky to be a part of this program for another year, and look forward to

seeing what the 2003 Iowa Field Hockey team can do! GO HAWKS!”

“I decided on Iowa because of its strong sense of family. Ironically 14 1/2hours and four states from home, I noticed a closer bond between players, coachesand family than I saw in other schools. I only have two brothers at home, but I

definitely feel like I gained 19 sisters when I chose Iowa. Even alumni at our springtournament show how much of a family you become when you are on the team. How

many other schools can fill 2+ alumni teams for their tournament?

“I also love the great heart of my teammates and coaches. Everyone that is apart of the program from the parents to student advisors, coaches to players puts alot of time and energy into maintaining our strong tradition and keeping Iowa field

hockey at its finest.

“Plus we look sweet in our all black away uniforms.”Jessica Zosky

“When Natalie made her decision to go to Iowa, we wonderedwhat it would be like to have our daughter in the Midwest. Butafter that first hockey weekend in Iowa City, we knew it was the

best choice she could have made. The atmosphere was justamazing. Then, throughout Natalie’s four years, we saw just howgreat Iowa is from all aspects, from the education the Univer-

sity of Iowa offers to the friendly community of Iowa City.

“We can’t think of a better place to send our daughters thanIowa City, that’s why when Sarah told us she had decided on

the University of Iowa, we were absolutely thrilled.”

Why Iowa?

“I came to the University of Iowa because I wanted a new experience in mylife and I wanted to be part of the great tradition the Hawkeyes have. Being aHawkeye is now part of my identity and the person I am growing into. I hold

myself to a higher standard now that I am representing such a great institu-tion, and I am very proud to be representing such a great establishment.

“I also love the family atmosphere that the team and coaching staffprovides. From the minute I signed with Iowa I felt like I had been with the

team forever. I know that I will have many great experiences, along withbeing able to enhance my field hockey skills greatly during these four

years.”

“The alumini weekend was a great experience for all of us. With so many alumini returning it showed the dedicationof the past and present iowa field hockey players. It gave us a chance to bring back many of the traditions that oncefounded the program. It shows that the Iowa Field Hockey pride will live on forever!”

When you look at the raw numbers, a 9-8 overall recordand a 2-5 mark in the Big Ten Conference, it might appearthat the Iowa Hawkeye Field Hockey team had a bit of anoff year. However, when you realize that every one ofIowa’s losses came to a team that had been ranked in theNFHCA Top 20 at one point of the season, things start tolook much better.

The Hawkeyes started the2002 season on a great note, taking a 1-0 victory fromeventual NCAA ChampionWake Forest at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Iowa then losta 1-2 overtime nail-biter tohost school and perennialnational powerhouse NorthCarolina.

The squad then split a pairof games at the TempleInvitational, defeating thehost Owls 2-1 on a game-winning goal from SarahDawson before losing toLouisville 3-1 in thechampionship game.

The Hawkeyes then swept the competition at the BigTen/BIG EAST Challenge at Ann Arbor, MI, knocking offConnecticut and Providence.

Iowa then traveled out to the west coast, where theywere defeated by 18th-ranked California before topplingStanford in a 1-0 overtime thriller. Lindsay Miller endedthings in the extra frame by netting the game winninggoal.

The Hawkeyes continued their winning ways upon theirreturn to the Midwest with a home-and-home series sweepof Northwestern. Iowa took a 4-1 win in Iowa City, thendefeated the Wildcats 2-1 in Evanston, IL.

No. 2 Michigan visited Iowa City next, and handed theHawkeyes their first shutout loss with a 2-0 defeat. Iowarebounded to knock off Southwest Missouri State, 1-0,but then lost a hard-fought battle to No. 5 Michigan State,2-1 in East Lansing, MI.

After a 3-1 win at Indiana, the Hawkeyes dropped apair of overtime games to finish up Big Ten play. A strongdefensive battle ended in a 0-1, double overtime loss to

Ohio State, and a trip to State College, PA, ended in a 2-3overtime loss at the hands of Penn State.

The Hawkeyes headed into the Big Ten Tournament asthe fifth-seed and were matched up with host school OhioState in the first round. The Iowa offense couldn’t get ontrack, though, and the season ended with a 2-0 loss tothe Buckeyes.

POSTSEAON HONORSThe Hawkeyes were well-

rewarded for their fineseason, raking in thepostseason awards.

Tiffany Leister receivedthe highest honors, beingnamed a first team NFHCAall-American. The senior wasthe first Iowa player toreceive that honor sinceKelly Druley in 1999.

Iowa was wellrepresented on the all-BigTen teams, with Leister andBarb Weinberg beingselected to the first team and

Lauren Stiver and Lindsay Miller making appearanceson the second team.

On the regional level, Leister and Stiver were bothnamed first team all-Mideast Regional, while Weinberg wasnamed to the second team.

WEARING THE RED, WHITE AND BLUEThe 2002 Hawkeyes added a little Black and Gold to go

with the Red, White and Blue last season, having fiveplayers on various United States National Teams.

Tiffany Leister, Lauren Edwards, Lindsay Millerand Barb Weinberg were all selected to the 2002 UnitedStates Under-23 team, while Lauren Stiver made the 2002United States Under-19 team.

Weinberg and Miller traveled to South Africa with theUnder-23 team during the team’s South African Tour. TheHawkeye duo helped Team USA to a 3-1-1 record.

The Hawkeyes enjoyed a successful season in 2002against very tough competition.

The University of Iowa AthleticDepartment, under the direction of AthleticDirector Bob Bowlsby for the past 12 years,is regarded as one of the top intercollegiateprograms in the nation.

The men’s and women’s departments, operating separately for over 25 years, merged in 2001 under Bowlsby’s direction. It combined nationally recognized programsfor both genders into one successful andprogressive athletic program.

While the Hawkeyes continue to competewith the best in the nation in a variety ofsports, Iowa continues to boast some of themost impressive athletic facilities in thenation, operated by one of the most respecteddepartments.

Several new projects are underway on theIowa campus. The goal is to improve all areasof the collegiate experience for Hawkeyestudent-athletes. One of the latest additionsto the UI campus is the Roy G. Karro AthleticsHall of Fame and Visitors Center. The Hall ofFame and a varsity soccer complex make upthe first phase of a $37 million project.

Phase two of the project includes newswimming and diving pools, and indoor andoutdoor tennis facilities, in addition tobicycle and walking paths. More than $15million of the total cost will be generatedthrough private giving.

Additional priorities for the Iowaprogram include the establishment anddevelopment of endowments for all sports

programs, the continued enhancement ofgraduation rates, and the implementation ofa long-range plan to ensure Iowa’s financial, academic and competitive future. As anexample, all of Iowa’s 13 scholarships formen’s basketball are fully endowed.

The graduation rate of Iowa’s student-athletes has improved in each of the past 10years and has consistently ranked above thegraduation rate of all UI students. Hawkeyeathletes have garnered more than 50academic All-America honors since 1992. In1998-99 Iowa led the Big Ten in academicall-Big Ten selections and Iowa ranked secondin 1999-00. In 2002-03, over 140 male andfemale Iowa athletes earned academic all-BigTen recognition.

Iowa’s athletic teams during the 2002-03 athletic year continued their trend ofsuccess.

The Hawkeye football team posted aperfect 8-0 Big Ten record in winning theleague title. Iowa participated in the 2003Orange Bowl and ended the season rankedeighth nationally in both major polls. Iowa’smen’s and women’s basketball teams haveadvanced to post-season play in each of thelast three seasons, while Iowa’s wrestling andgymnastics teams continue to rank amongthe best in the nation. Iowa has won six ofthe last nine NCAA wrestling titles and nineof the last 13 championships.

Since its inception in 1979, Athletics Stu-dent Services has evolved from a two-person,academic support service to a broad-based,nationally prominent student support servicesoperation. Its purpose is to assist studentathletes to become tomorrow’s leaders by of-fering academic and personal support servicesto assist them in making timely and satisfac-tory progress toward their degrees.

Athletic Student Services focuses on fourimportant areas — academic counseling andmonitoring, educational and support pro-grams, retention programs and complianceservices — when working with student-ath-letes. Following are descriptions of some ofthe programs, services and opportunitiesavailable to student-athletes in those areas.

Athletics Learning CenterThe $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann

Gerdin Athletics Learning Center, scheduledto open in August of 2003, will give all Iowastudent-athletes a state of the art facility tohelp them with their educations.

The Athletics Learning Center is a multi-level, 20,000 square foot facility which willprovide a computer center, study areas, classes and meeting places for all Hawkeyestudent-athletes.

The Learning Center will feature an au-ditorium that converts into two classrooms, separate study rooms for under and upper-class student-athletes that feature 28 studycarrels, a computer lab, five tutorial rooms, the book loan repository, office space forIowa’s Student Services staff and a displayarea to recognize the academic accomplish-ments of Iowa’s student-athletes.

Academic Counseling andMonitoring

Athletics coordinators work closely withstudent-athletes and their university-assignedadvisors from the time they arrive on campusuntil the time they leave the University. Alongwith focusing on academic planning matterssuch as goal-setting, plans of study, choos-ing majors and degree requirements, athlet-ics coordinators also help student-athletes un-derstand NCAA, Big Ten and University aca-demic policies. They also solicit feedback frominstructors on academic progress made by stu-dent-athletes.

TutoringTutoring is available free of charge to all

student-athletes. Tutors, who are post-gradu-ates and teachers, help with course contentas well as study strategies and are availablein virtually all general education programsubjects.

RetentionA full-time staff member directs the re-

tention program, which identifies student-athletes who may need tailored academic as-sistance and structure, and implements indi-vidualized learning plans to help them suc-ceed. Such plans may include daily andweekly planning sessions with athletics co-ordinators and retention staff, tutoring, study groups, mainstreaming into on-cam-pus services like the writing center, mathlabs and services for students with learningdisabilities.

Transition SeminarAll new student-athletes attend an eight-

week transition seminar during the fall se-mester that is geared toward helping themmake the transition from high school to col-lege successfully. Seminar topics include timemanagement skills, learning and study strat-egies, the culture and rules of the univer-sity, and life skills concerning alcohol andother substances, relationships and intimacy, diversity, tolerance, values and character.

CHAMPS/Life SkillsLife skills programs are conducted

throughout the year with and for studentathletes on quality of life issues critical topersonal growth, such as personal account-ability, responsible use and nonuse of alco-hol, diversity and gambling.

Career Guidance andDevelopment

Planning a meaningful career and a ful-filling life is an ongoing process of expand-ing and narrowing choices, beginning whenstudent-athletes arrive on campus and con-tinuing throughout their college career andlifetime. The professional staff works withother career development professionals oncampus to offer individual consultation, ca-reer development seminars, workshops, re-ferrals to other campus offices and specialevents like the Senior Recognition Banquetfor graduating student-athletes.

Minority Enrichment ProgramThis program offers a culturally support-

ive environment in which minority student-athletes have the opportunity to developfriendships and a support network in the uni-versity. A core focus group of students andstaff coordinate programs such as guestspeakers, holiday celebrations, communityservice activities with the local neighbor-hood centers, events with Cultural Centersand networking with minority faculty, staff, professional and business leaders.

Compare the NumbersIowa’s student-athletes have outper-

formed the University’s entire student popu-lation each year since the NCAA started re-quiring a report of student-athlete gradua-tion rates.

THE HAWKEYE NICKNAME

SCHOOL COLORS

SCHOOL FIGHT SONG

For 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 agroup of 50 seniors met on the steps of the Old Capitol to decidewhat are now the school official colors. They chose Old Gold, thecolor of Iowa’s vast corn fields and Black, the color of the rich soil.

The University of Iowa borrowed its athletic nickname from thestate of Iowa many years ago.

The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in thefictional novel, The Last of the Mohicans, written by James FenimoreCooper. Cooper had the Delaware Indians bestow the name on a whitescout who lived with them.

In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in theterritory of Iowa acquired the nickname, chiefly through the effortsof Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James Edwards of Fort Madi-son.

Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper toBurlington in 1843 and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The twomen continued their campaign to popularize the name, and territo-rial officials eventually gave it their formal approval.

The Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when acartoon character, later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer III, instructor of journalism at Iowa.

The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name througha statewide contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin,a Belle Plaine alumnus, was the man who suggested Herky.

Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowaathletics and epitomized University life. He even donned a militaryuniform during the Korean War and became the insignia of the 124thFighter Squadron.

During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as theIowa mascot. Since that time, Herky has been a familiar figure atIowa athletics events.
