Experience? Check. Texas returns four starters and eight of its top 10 scorers from last year’s team that posted a 23-12 mark and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Depth? Check. Head coach Rick Barnes has the luxury of a roster that is at least two-deep at every position. The Longhorns also should be versatile enough to effectively play a

multitude of styles with different personnel. Expect competition for playing time at virtually every spot on the floor. The questions are can and how will they fit together. These are questions that can only be answered in time. The Texas frontcourt should feature one of the best one-two combinations in the Big 12 Conference, if not the nation, in senior swingman Damion James and senior center Dexter pittman. James declared for the NBA Draft in the spring and went through a month of workouts for teams before deciding to pull his name out and return to school for his senior year. One of the top rebounders in the nation, he enters the season just 110 boards shy of becoming the school’s all-time leading rebounder. James already ranks 18th on the UT career scoring list (1,306 points), third in career rebounds (968), fourth in career double-doubles (37) and seventh in career blocks (123). Pittman proved to be one of the most improved players in the country as a junior. He increased his scoring production from 2.7 ppg during his first two seasons to 10.1 last year, saw his rebounding jump from 2.1 rpg to 5.5 and his minutes increase from 6.2 mpg to 16.6. Pittman has put his weight issues behind him, and the coaching staff believes he is ready to dominate at both ends of the court for extended minutes. He averaged 15.4 points and 10.4 rebounds in 27.6 minutes per game during UT’s five postseason contests. Included in the stretch was an eye-opening 19-point, 20-rebound effort in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals against Kansas State. Depth in the frontcourt is plenty and experienced, as the Longhorns also return juniors Gary Johnson, matt Hill and Clint Chapman along with redshirt sophomore alexis Wangmene. Freshman Shawn Williams has the versatility to play on the wing or at the power forward position. Johnson earned Big 12 Conference All-Reserve team mention last year while ranking second on the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and fourth in scoring (10.0 ppg). He has seen action in 54 career games during his first two seasons in Austin. Johnson registered back-to-back solid performances last season against No. 19/22 Michigan State (20 points) and at Wisconsin (16 points, eight rebounds). Hill returns for his fourth year with the program as a redshirt junior and has played in 44 career games. He has fully recovered from a left heel injury that sidelined him for the entire 2007-08 season. Last year, he played in 21 games and recorded a season-high six points and five rebounds in a career-best 27 minutes at Texas Tech. Chapman has seen action in 67 games during his first two years in Austin. Last season, he averaged 2.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in 8.0 minutes per contest. He tied his career high with six rebounds against No. 15/12 Villanova at the Jimmy V Classic and posted a career-high nine points against Kansas State in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship quarterfinals. Wangmene has fully recovered from his right knee injury which sidelined him for the majority of the 2008-09 season. He played in four of the first five games last

year before electing to have surgery on the knee. Prior to having surgery, he tallied eight points, seven rebounds, one block and one steal in nine minutes against St. Joseph’s during the EA Sports Maui Invitational. As a freshman in 2007-08, he played in 37 games and tied for third on the team in blocked shots (18). Williams was a four-year letterwinner at Duncanville High School who helped his teams post a 130-20 record during his career. He led his team in both scoring and rebounding in each of his last two years, averaging 20.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a senior. Williams was ranked as the No. 46 prospect nationally by Scout.com and No. 53 by ESPNU following his senior year. The Longhorns do lose the services of forward/center Connor Atchley. A four-year letterwinner and two-year starter, Atchley played in 136 career games (second in school history). Last season, he averaged 4.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game. In the backcourt, Texas bid farewell to four-year letterwinner and three-year starter A.J. Abrams. All Abrams did in his four seasons in Austin was set Big 12 Conference career records in three-pointers made (389) and games played (144). He finished his career ranked third in school history and sixth in Big 12 history in career scoring (1,969 points). Last year, Abrams led the team in scoring (16.6 ppg), three-point field goal percentage (.396) and steals (47). Despite the loss of Abrams, the UT backcourt may actually be deeper than the frontcourt. The Longhorns return experience in the form of senior Justin mason, junior Dogus Balbay and sophomore Varez Ward. Texas also welcomes an infu-sion of talent to the backcourt with junior transfer Jai Lucas along with a trio of highly-touted freshmen in avery Bradley, Jordan Hamilton and J’Covan Brown. The team’s “glue guy” for the past several seasons, Mason has played in all 108 games (101 starts) and earned or shared the team’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player honor in each of his first three years. Last year, he saw time at all three guard positions and led the team and ranked sixth in the Big 12 in assists (4.0 apg). A two-time Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection, Mason also ranked second on the team in steals (38) and minutes (30.0 mpg), fourth in rebounding (3.7 rpg) and fifth in scoring (6.1 ppg). Balbay, who missed his freshman year due to a right knee injury, shared the team’s Most Improved Player award with Dexter Pittman last season. Balbay started the final 13 games of the year at the point and averaged 5.6 points per game while recording 63 assists against just 30 turnovers in the stretch. He nearly recorded the second triple-double in UT history with 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in the home win against No. 2/2 Oklahoma. Ward came on strong during postseason play last year, averaging 9.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 20.0 minutes per contest. He averaged 11.5 points and 2.5 assists in 23.5 minutes per game during the two NCAA Tournament contests, including a career-high 16 points on 7-of-8 FG shooting in 21 minutes during the

Second Round game against No. 6/5 Duke. Lucas, a transfer from the University of Florida who will become eligible in mid-December following the completion of fall semester exams, will be in the mix for playing time at the point. Per NCAA transfer rules, he practiced with the team during the spring semester last year. During his freshman year at Florida, he started all 36 games and earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team, averaging 8.5 points per game and converting a team-high 43.5 percent of his three-point field goal attempts (37-of-85). Lucas was a McDonald’s All-American at Bellaire High School in Houston, averaging 26.3 points and 7.5 assists per contest during his senior year. Bradley earned ESPNRISE.com High School National Player of the Year honors and was ranked as the No. 1 prospect nationally by ESPNU following his senior year. He averaged 29.9 points per game while playing in 11 contests during his senior season at Port Arthur Memorial High School. A pair of freshman walk-ons, Dean Melchionni and Andrew Dick, will add depth to the backcourt rotation.

Damion James enters his senior season just 110 rebounds shy of becoming the school’s all-time leading rebounder.
