2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO RAISES THE BAR – AGAIN

The Chevrolet Silverado full-sizepickup – GM’s best-selling vehicle– continues to set new standardsfor performance and capabilityin 2003. Bold new exteriordesign only hints at Silverado'smore than 40 new features/enhancements, ranging fromexpanded availability of theQuadrasteer four-wheel steeringsystem and a hot new Silverado

SS to the segment's first-ever Bose audio systems.

The 2003 Silverado receives an expressive new front-end design. The look shares astrong family resemblance with other Chevy trucks such as TrailBlazer and Avalanche,yet strongly differentiates Silverado from anything else on the road. The hood evokesChevy power and strength, and the grille is smoothly integrated into the front end.The bumper offers larger, recessed fog lamps, while the front and rear fenders featurecrisp lines and angular wheel openings. New body-side moldings add protection, andrestyled taillamps complete the design. Two new exterior colors – Dark Gray Metallicand Arrival Blue – are also available.

The Quadrasteer four-wheel-steering system – which offers low-speedmaneuverability and high-speed stability, handling and control that are ideal forpulling a trailer – was introduced on 2002 Silverado extended-cab short-box pickups.For 2003, the 1500HD short-box pickups become the industry's first full-size crewcabs to offer this revolutionary system.

At low speeds, Quadrasteer enables the rear wheels to turn in the opposite directionof the front wheels. That helps the vehicle make tighter turns, such as whencornering or getting into a tight parking space. The turning diameter of 1500HDmodels is reduced 21 percent, from 49.6 feet to 37.4 feet.

Extending its rich “Super Sport" heritage, Chevy is introducing a 2003 SilveradoSS, which will be available in all 50 states and Canada beginning in the firstquarter of 2003.

Dating back to the 1961 Impala, Chevy SS vehicles have provided on-roadenthusiasts with outstanding performance, great handling and sleek, musculardesigns. The Silverado SS is a contemporary expression of Chevy muscle that

responds to enthusiasts who have migrated to full-size pickups. The Silverado SS,created from a 1500 extended-cab short bed, adds fun and excitement withoutforfeiting Silverado's proven strengths and capabilities.

A standard high output LQ9 version of the Vortec 6000 V8, with 345 horsepower and380 lb-ft of torque, provides Silverado SS with exhilarating off-line acceleration andrelaxed cruising. It mates to a Hydra-Matic 4L85-E four-speed automatic overdrivetransmission, whose 3.06 first gear and 0.70 final gear contribute to the truck’simpressive performance.

A standard full-time, all-wheel-drive (AWD) viscous-coupled transfer case providesexceptional on-road, wet or dry pavement handling. It requires no driverintervention, automatically and continuously transferring torque from slippingwheels to those with a firmer grip.

A unique Z60 high-performance chassis package, including Silverado’s largest-ever20-inch wheel and tire combination, provides exceptional road holding and corneringcapability. A 2-inch lower ride height, 18mm wider track and P275/55R20 GoodyearEagle radials provide exceptional stability.

The exterior of the SS shows it is no ordinary Silverado. With its trim, aggressivestance, monochromatic color scheme and specially styled aluminum wheels, SilveradoSS conveys performance from any angle. The custom interior is Dark Charcoal andequipped with uplevel LT trim and leather bucket seats with special “SS” embroideredheadrests. The Silverado SS will be offered in Black, Arrival Blue Metallic or VictoryRed. The SS appearance is refined and dramatic – an instant classic. Impressive new entertainment systems on all models – from available Bose soundsystems to a Panasonic DVD Passenger Entertainment System that includes a DVDplayer with a flip-down screen for Crew Cab models – add to Silverado's creaturecomforts. These systems (except the base fleet radio) feature the next-generationRadio Data System, and can interface with services such as the new optional XMSatellite Radio. On Crew Cab models, available rear-seat audio controls allow second-row passengers to enjoy a separate audio source from front-seat occupants.

The 2003 Silverado also offers XM Satellite Radio as an option. XM Radio features 100 coast-to-coast digital channels, including 71 music channels (more than 30 ofthem commercial free) from hip hop to opera, classical to country, bluegrass to bluesand 29 channels of sports, talk, children's and entertainment programming. XM alsobrings to the car, for the first time on radio, a diverse selection of 24-hour newssources previously available only in the home. XM's next-generation sound-qualitytechnology provides superior sound remarkably close to compact disc.

Additional new safety enhancements for 2003 include a passenger-sensing systemand dual-level air bags. The passenger-sensing air-bag system automaticallydeactivates the passenger-side air bag under certain conditions to protect children.The system assesses whether the occupant in the seat is an adult or child, based onthe measured weight in the seat cushion and tension in the belt system, if any. these measurements are typical for a child, the air bag is disabled. If they are typicalfor an adult, the air bag is enabled.

A dual-level air-bag system (not available on 1500HD Crew Cab and 2500HD and3500 Series models) is a supplemental restraint system designed to detect vehicledeceleration and, based on the deceleration data, provides an appropriate amountof air-bag inflation. Sensors located in the front of the vehicle work with thesensing diagnostic module (SDM) to measure the severity of the impact. The SDMuses the data to determine the type of air-bag deployment (first stage or secondstage) or non-deploy. Dual-stage air bags are designed to help reduce theoccurrence of inflation-induced injuries by deploying the air bag less forcefully in lower-speed crashes.

Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) now provides more precise, consistent throttleoperation on all Silverado small-block V8 engines. New oxygen sensors provideenhanced durability and reduced emissions during engine warmup. All Silveradomodels with the Vortec 4300 4.3L V6 and those sold in California with the Vortec4800 4.8L or Vortec 5300 5.3L V8 engines feature a more robust catalytic convertersystem that meets Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV) standards.

The Vortec 4300 V6 with multi-port fuel injection (previously available in California)is expanded to all 50 states. A central fuel injector delivers a separate flow of fuel tosix individual hybrid injectors for better performance and improved emissions.

The Autotrac electric shift, part-time 4WD transfer case, available in 1500/2500 light-duty Silverado models, gets improved fuel economy when operating in 2WD, as wellas improved customer feel when in the “Auto” mode during parking lot and otherlow-speed maneuvers. Two-wheel-drive Silverados offer electronic traction control to enhance surefootedness on models with a V8 engine, automatic transmission andlocking rear differential.

All light-duty 2003 Silverado models feature improved brake performance, “pedalfeel” and quieter operation.

Alternative fuel systems are now available on more Silverado models and GVWratings (see Silverado HD section below). Equipped with a Vortec 6000 V8, thesemodels come with a dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) or a bi-fuel system that can run on CNG or gasoline. Light-duty Silverado models with the Vortec 5300 V8 offer an option that allows them to run on varying blends of ethanol andgasoline, to a maximum of 85% ethanol.

An advanced new multiplexed electrical architecture makes Silverado even “smarter”so it can provide more functions for 2003. A communication network transfers datathroughout the vehicle. Possible” and “Door Ajar.” Silverado's instrument panel and cluster have beenredesigned to accommodate these new features. The new architecture reducesmaterials for improved quality and less weight. Available redundant steering wheelcontrols allow owners to personalize several functions and safely access newinfotainment systems.

A new 145-amp generator is standard on Silverado models equipped withQuadrasteer and on models featuring V8 engines with the Snowplow Prep Package.The more powerful generator provides a quicker battery charge, and slows batterydischarge during vehicle operation. A memory subsystem can remember preferencesfor seat and mirror positions. “Smart” also means the battery-rundown protectionfeature now automatically turns off the headlamps, park lamps and interior lightsafter 10 minutes if left on inadvertently.

A new dual-zone heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, availablewith both manual and automatic climate control, provides outstanding comfort.Dual-zone controls allow the driver and front passenger to adjust the temperature to their own comfort levels – as much as a 30-degree Fahrenheit difference betweenthe two front zones. The optional automatic system automatically controls airdelivery, fan speed, temperature and recirculating/outside air to provide fasterwarmups and cooldowns.

Redesigned seats and center console enhance Silverado's interior look. Dark CharcoalGray is a new interior color.

Uplevel Silverado models feature exterior mirrors with power-tilt glass/powerfolding, heating elements, left-side electrochromatic glass, puddle lights, turn-signalindicators and an optional memory feature. An available new power-adjustablecamper mirror can be extended to a vehicle width of as much as 106 inches.

Silverado 1500 Extended Cab Short Box models (except those with Quadrasteer)feature an available PRO-TEC pickup box and tailgate. The injection-moldedcomposite material resists scratches and dents, and never rusts.

As always, Silverado offers a variety of configurations to fit customers' specific needs– with half-ton and three-quarter-ton offerings in fleetside or sportside trim and in2WD/4WD regular, extended and crew cabs. Customers can also choose a short orlong box. Silverado features an impressive Vortec gasoline engine lineup – Vortec4300 V6, Vortec 4800 V8, Vortec 5300 V8 and Vortec 6000 V8 – ranging from 200 hpto 300 hp. Payload capacities range from 1,593 to 3,224 pounds, and Gross VehicleWeight Ratings extend from 6,100 to 8,600 pounds.

The Silverado 1500HD has the strength of a three-quarter-ton model frame, plus acrew cab's four full doors. The 1500HD has a standard 300 hp Vortec 6000 V8 enginewith a gross combination weight rating of 16,000 pounds, and a payload of as muchas 3,143 pounds. Maximum trailer weight is 10,300 pounds.

Silverado offers a wide selectionof powerful three-quarter andone-ton pickups, including

2500HD (3/4-ton) and 3500 Series (one-ton) regular cabs, four-door extended cabs, crew cabs and chassis cabs.

For 2003, 14 different Silverado models can run on dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG), or bi-fuel systems that operate on CNG or gasoline when equipped with a Vortec 6000 6.0L V8 with hardened upgraded valves and seats to withstand CNG's lackof lubricity and cooling effects. Special versions with reduced gross vehicle weightratings (8,500 pounds) allow customers to meet fleet requirements in “non-attainment”areas. Higher-capacity 9,200-pound GVWR models are also available.

Silverado HD offers an impressive array of powerful gasoline and diesel engines.

The Duramax 6600 6.6L diesel V8 – with world-class performance in an incrediblyquiet package – kicks out 300 hp at 3100 rpm and 520 lb-ft (705 Nm) of torque at1800 rpm.

An optional Vortec 8100 8.1L V8 gas engine has 340 hp at 4200 rpm and 455 lb-ft(617 Nm) of torque at 3200 rpm. For 2003, the Vortec 8100 receives a more efficientDenso starter that draws about 10 fewer amps.

The Vortec 6000 V8 produces 300 hp at 4400 rpm and 370 lb-ft (501 Nm) of torqueat 4000 rpm.

The Duramax 6600 and Vortec 8100 are mated to smooth-shifting, high-capacitytransmissions with close-ratio gearing to provide exceptional launch, hill-climbingand towing capability.

The ZF S6-650 six-speed is fully synchronized in all gears. Dual cone synchronizers insecond and third gear provide extra capacity. The shift lever moves forward for firstand straight back for reverse, providing easy low-speed maneuvering since usersdon’t have to go across the shift pattern to select “reverse.” Second can be used forlaunching unloaded or lightly loaded trucks. First gear can be used as a “creepergear” for extra low-end performance.

The Allison 1000 was built to move tonnage. It has full electronic control of shift-timingpoints, five forward speeds, and helical-type planetary gearsets for quiet operation. Italso provides two operating modes, normal and Tow/Haul. When hauling heavy loadsdown long, steep grades, a grade braking mechanism automatically downshifts to helpslow the vehicle when the driver applies the brakes.

A heavy-duty, five-speed manual transmission and GM’s optional Hydra-Matic 4L80-Efour-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission are available for theVortec 6000. The 4L80-E also provides Passive Shift Stabilization with Tow/Haul modeand a standard temperature gauge and temperature monitoring system.

With awesome power, tough frames, advanced suspensions and high-capacity brakes,the 2500HD/3500 Series provides outstanding payload capacities and impressivehauling and trailering capabilities. The 3/4-ton models have a Gross Vehicle WeightRating (GVWR) of as much as 9,200 pounds (4,173 kg), and payloads of as much as3,964 pounds (1,798 kg). The one-ton pickup models have a GVWR of as much as11,400 pounds (5,171 kg) GVWR and payloads of as much as 5,753 pounds (2,610 kg).Silverado HD has an 11,400-pound (5,171 kg) GVWR for 2WD chassis cabs and12,000-pound (5,443 kg) GVWR for 4WD chassis cabs. Chassis cabs provide payloads of as much as 6,089 pounds (2,762 kg).

Both the Vortec 8100 and Duramax 6600 diesel V8 tow as much as 12,000 pounds(5,443 kg); they provide a maximum 22,000-pound (9,979-kg) gross combined weightrating (GCWR).

With a fifth wheel or gooseneck hitch, trailering capability increases to 15,800-pounds (6,804 kg). The Vortec 8100 provides its maximum ratings with either a4.10:1 or 3.73:1 axle ratio; the Duramax 6600 offers a 3.73 axle ratio.

With a weight-distributing platform hitch and 4.10 axle ratio, the Vortec 6000 V8permits towing trailers weighing as much as 10,500 pounds (4,763 kg), and providesa maximum 16,000-pound (7,257-kg) GCWR.

The heavy-duty pickups are trailer-ready. A handling and trailering package isstandard. A trailering equipment package provides the weight-distributing hitchplatform, eight-wire trailer harness with mounted connector and a jumper harnesswith a plug-in for the electric trailer brake controller.
