SEAN NÓS / OLD STYLE DANCE

Sean-Nós Dance

This is an old style of dancing that is most associated with the west of Ireland, particularly Connemara. Sean nós dance is low to the ground stepping out to the music, similar to tap dance. Its style is more relaxed than modern Irish step dancing, so it is well suited to participation by all ages. With its emphasis on providing low key percussive accompaniment to traditional Irish music, sean nós footwork is great fun to watch, but especially to listen to! The steps are improvisational and typically done solo or in very small groups. Although stage performances are becoming more popular, many still consider some of the best sean-nós dancers to be the "old timers" stepping it out in the dark corners of the pub.

SEAN NÓS / OLD STYLE DANCE INSTRUCTION

Workshops and Classes with Danielle Enblom

Minneapolis born dancer, musician, dance historian, and educator, Danielle Enblom is known for her work as a researcher and ethnochoreologer; performance work that explores and integrates concepts of tradition and innovation; and her work in education. A trained Waldorf teacher and seasoned educator, Danielle has worked extensively with adults and children, with an intent focus on the art of learning and integrating the study and implementation of intellectual, practical, and creative processes. Danielle offers classes, workshops, private lessons, lectures, and performances in various forms of traditional percussive dance including old style Irish step dance and sean-nos dance.

CÉILÍ DANCE INSTRUCTION

Céilí dances are made up of groups of dancers – sometimes couples, or groups of 3, 6, 8 or more. You do not need to bring a partner. Come by yourself and make new friends, or bring a friend or several. It’s a whole lot of fun, it's great exercise, and whichever of these places you choose, you'll be dancing with a lot of really nice people.

Wednesday night Irish céilí dance class

Learn the basic steps, and then join in the dances.Classes run all year round and are free:

Dubliner Irish Pub - 2162 University Av., St. Paul. Learn Irish dancing in a genuine Irish Pub with a wooden floor that has known a whole lot of dancing feet. Steps and dances are taught by Paul McCluskey and friends. Basic beginning steps are taught from 7:00, followed by advanced lessons and dancing until 9:00 pm, with more dancing afterwards to live music. Year-round; age 21 and above only. Free, but be sure to patronize the Pub, and leave a tip even if you are just drinking water.

IRISH SET DANCING AND INSTRUCTION

Irish Set dancing is a form of social dancing, which has been enjoyed in Ireland for over 150 years and has seen a large-scale revival in the 1980s and 1990s; it is very popular today in Ireland and in Irish communities throughout the world.

"Sets" are danced by eight people in a formation similar to that of American square dancing usually consisting of three to six figures with a short pause between each. The music these figures can include reels, jigs, hornpipes, polkas or sometimes the occasional fling. In set dancing there is less emphasis on footwork and more on the figures (the formation/movements of the dancers within the "set"). The basic footwork can be described as a low, ‘sliding’ movement. There are many different styles, from basic steps to very elaborately embellished steps.

2nd and 4th Tuesday night Irish set dancing

7:30 – 9:30 pm. Live music by members of the Twin Cities Céilí band and friends. Come join an enthusiastic group of dancers who will help you learn. Free but bring a bit o’ cash to toss in for the musicians.

Dubliner Irish Pub - 2162 University Av., St. Paul. Enjoy dancing in a genuine Irish Pub with a wooden floor that has known a whole lot of dancing feet. No children, and must be of legal drinking age to remain past 9:00 pm.

STORYTELLING – THE SPOKEN WORD

“Since we gathered in the dark caves long 'go we are a people have been retelling stories to one another.  The Irish are known to be the greatest at the art of conjuring a tale into life while bringing the listener into another time and world often leaving them there as they slip out the back door. As the old Irish Proverb says, Bíonn siúlach scéalach, 'Travellers have tales to tell' and the Irish have always been great wanderers of this world.

There are two types of Storyteller, the Scéalaí and the Seanchaí; the former who recounts the urban legends and the latter the teller of international traveling folktales and Sagas, which by all accounts in the days before television and the modern attention span would go on for three days and three nights.

Nowadays, though, all Irish storytellers are known as the Seanchaí!

Who's telling tales now?”
