  • Presidents’ MessageThanks to the extraordinary dedication and leadership of our donors,Bellevue Community College and the BCC Foundation achieved greatmilestones in 2001-02.

    A highly successful campaign resulted in the opening of the BCC EarlyLearning, Family, and Childcare Center last spring. In April, FoundationBoard members and community members raised over $70,000 to fundscholarships that will help students achieve their educational andprofessional goals. New endowed scholarships were established tosupport international students, displaced homemakers and otherspecial populations. School books were purchased for low-incomeparticipants in WorkFirst training programs. Outstanding faculty andstaff members were honored during the Foundation’s annual Marginof Excellence awards.

    Foundation Board members like Frank Young, who was named the“Citizen of the Year” by the Advance Bellevue organization for hisservice to many Eastside organizations, exemplify the commitmentand vision of the Foundation Board. Their energy and involvementprovide life-changing opportunities for BCC students and promoteexcellence in campus programs.

    BCC benefits our community on a large scale through educationalprograms and services – and on an individual level through lastingconnections developed between students, faculty and staff. On thefollowing pages, we provide you with an overview of college activitiesand accomplishments during the past year. We hope you’ll learn moreabout our innovative programs, service in the local community andour continuing efforts to effect positive change in the lives ofthousands of students.

    Innovation

    InnovationBCC faculty and staff continue to provide creative, dynamic teachingand learning opportunities for our diverse student population.Innovation keeps the curriculum relevant and our programs vitalfor the 21st century workforce. BCC’s partnerships with businessesand organizations benefit local community members and educatorsthroughout the nation.

    BCC opened the Center for Liberal Arts in February to strengthenhumanities programs for campus and community members. BCC’sfirst scholar-in-residence, renowned Tibetan educator NawangDorjee, began his nine-month tenure at the college this fall.Campus learning communities and special events are planned asongoing activities to support the Center’s mission.

    BCC’s new Early Learning, Family, and Childcare Center was createdto promote the positive development of children and strengthenthe resources and support available to families in the community.Governor Gary Locke and First Lady Mona Locke shared theirbelief in the importance of early childhood education and qualitychildcare as featured speakers at the opening ceremony lastspring. The Center was created through a pioneering public-private partnership with Costco Wholesale Corporation.

    The Educator-to-Educator Institute (E2E) at the National WorkforceCenter for Emerging Technologies at BCC provides nationaltraining for information technology (IT) professionals andeducators. E2E staff joined forces with Microsoft and theAmerican Association of Community Colleges last spring toestablish a Working Connections IT Faculty DevelopmentInstitute. In the coming year, the new national system of Instituteswill provide the most current IT technology training for instructorsat community and technical colleges across the country.

  • Sinath HengA TRIO Student ServicesSuccess Story

    When Sinath Heng first came toAmerica from Cambodia, shewas a shy little girl who didn’tspeak English. Now, she’s anoutgoing first-generation collegestudent eager to explore newdirections at BCC, thanks tothe TRIO Student SupportServices program.

    After high school, Sinath wantedto attend beauty school, but hergrandmother (who raised herafter Sinath’s parents died inCambodia) encouraged her to

    attend collegeinstead. DuringSinath’s firstyear at BCC,she admits shedidn’t feelmotivated,but afterdiscoveringTRIO, sheraised her

    grades from a 2.0 average to A’sand B’s and is glad she skippedbeauty school for BCC.

    With a new confidence, Sinathsmiles on her way to the MathLab and says, “When I found outthere was help, I took advantageof it. Now that I’m in school, I’mplanning to stay in school.”

    Community

    GrowthEach year the college grows in size, complexity and breadth ofofferings in order to better serve the educational needs of thelocal community.

    The addition of Building R, the college’s largest instructional facilityat 72,000 square feet, allowed more students to be served onBCC’s main campus last fall. The facility has been recognizedfor its sustainable “green” construction and design features,including the use of recycled materials, high-efficiency glazing,and a geothermal heating and cooling system.

    BCC continued to expand flexible education options for studentsas the number of online courses and weekend classes showedcontinued growth. BCC Distance Education offered 37 new onlinecourses last year for students around the globe. Through a newoverseas partnership, BCC provided online course content tostudents at the Vector Institute of Visual Arts in India, whilecontinuing to grow enrollments with Hong Kong University ofScience and Technology and ISA Japan.

    BCC’s Weekend College program grew to 992 enrollments, providingstudents with more innovative scheduling options to pursue theireducational goals.

    The college awarded 1,679 degrees and certificates to the largestnumber of graduates in BCC history. Many grads continued theireducation at four-year universities or embarked on new careers.Students who completed their first two years of college at BCC,prior to transferring to the University of Washington, each savedover $4,400 in tuition and fees in the two-year period by attendinga community college.

    Several new academic and student services programs debuted at BCC.A sampling of new programs include TRIO Student SupportServices, the Transitions program for special-needs young adultsand Continuing Education’s Wired & Wireless CommunicationsTechnology. New degree and certificate programs were offeredin the areas of computer security, mobile computing, Webmultimedia authoring, marketing and sales, accounting and more.

    Offerings at BCC’s new North Campus, located near the intersection ofI-405 and SR-520 in north Bellevue, continued to expand. Thebranch campus offered Continuing Education, credit andWeekend College classes. Including BCC’s main and NorthCampus, the college provided educational services at 89 sitesduring the year.

    Nearly 100 alumni – dating from the 1960’s to the present – returned toBCC to reconnect with the college during the first-annual alumnireception and dinner in June.

    Service in theCommunityBCC strives to connect its students with opportunities to grow andto become involved in the community. The college community alsosees its role as an integral part of the community by sharingexpertise, programs and facilities.

    Over 38,000 students were educated and trained at BCC in diverseprograms including: college credit and transfer; continuingeducation; programs for high school students and senior citizens;programs for high school dropouts; professional and technicaltraining; adult basic education; contract training for business andindustry; distance education; and welfare-to-work training.

    Service learning, an educational model that combines communityservice with classroom instruction, debuted on the BCCcampus through the “Serve, Learn and Lead” project. Studentsparticipated in local organizations and gained real-worldexperience complementing the ideas they studied in class.Nearly 350 BCC students logged over 5,000 hours of communityservice at 54 community organizations including HopeLink, Cityof Bellevue, Kirkland Arts Center, Eastside Adult Day Servicesand Evergreen Health Care Center.

    BCC’s facilities were well-used by community members – 275organizations held events at BCC with over 93,000 people inattendance, totaling over 8,000 hours of use.

    Nearly 650 people who were laid off from regional firms were retrainedthrough BCC programs.

    Faculty, staff and administrators shared their expertise with thecommunity by serving on a variety of advisory boards, professionalorganizations and conferences. In turn, nearly 250 business andindustry professionals served on BCC professional and technicalprogram advisory boards, helping to ensure that college trainingprograms are current and relevant to local employment needs.

    BCC continued to produce high-quality, low-cost arts events withperformances from the BCC Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz and Choirgroups, Eastside Moving Company dance troupe and DramaDepartment, as well as diverse arts events and lectures fromContinuing Education’s Art-Zones program.

    In a continuing partnership with Stevenson Elementary School toencourage an interest in science among children, BCC scienceinstructors shared their knowledge and passion for science withstudents at the Bellevue elementary school. The annual “YoungScientists Celebration” in May featured a school assembly, groupprojects and hands-on demonstrations.

  • AchievementsThrough hard work and creativity, BCC students, faculty and staffmade great strides last year.

    BCC math students placed first in the state, first in the Northwest regionand 13th in the nation during the American MathematicsAssociation of Two-Year Colleges competition last spring. Thisis the fourth year in a row that BCC ‘mathletes’ placed first inthe state. Over 400 BCC students participated in three roundsof competition.

    Five BCC students advanced to the finals of Delta Epsilon Chi’s (DEC)international competition in April. DEC is a national organizationfor college students preparing for careers in marketing,merchandising, management and entrepreneurship. All fivestudents – Tanya Barrans, Jeremiah Stotesbery, Theresa Eastman,David Pomeranz and Edell Rowe – placed among the top threein state-wide competition in their respective areas. Barrans,Stotesbery (both in culinary management) and Eastman(merchandise management) finished in the top ten internationally.

    Student Les Feistel was named to the 2002 All-Washington AcademicTeam. The All-Washington Academic Team is a prestigious annualcompetition that recognizes the outstanding academic andservice contributions of community college students. Feistel washonored by Governor Gary Locke during ceremonies in Olympiain March.

    Interior Design student Abigail Gelotte won the national ACCESS DesignCompetition sponsored by the American Society of InteriorDesigners. She designed a creative product for working peoplewho lose valuable time away from home and family during thedaily commute.

    Five BCC students received the Washington Award for VocationalExcellence last spring. The scholarships, which are based onoccupational proficiency, leadership and community service, wereawarded to June Hanley, Peggy Clark (both in nursing), Julie King,Kelly Tivnan (both in interior design) and Meifoon Lui (accounting).

    Leslie Lum, instructor in the Business Division, published a textbookentitled Personal Investing to educate people about savingsand investment options.

    Media faculty Tim Kennedy and Mary Slowinski published a book,SMIL: Adding Multimedia to the Web. SMIL (SynchronizedMultimedia Integration Language) allows Web designersto synchronize and position video, animation, audio and textto stream presentations via the Web.

    Angel KelchevA Scholarship at Work

    Angel Kelchev and his familymoved to America in May of 2001from Pazardjik, Bulgaria. As aBCC Foundation Scholarshipwinner, he is currently studyingbusiness at BCC, working as amath tutor on campus and servingas a Lance Corporal in the UnitedStates Marine Corps Reserve.

    The scholarship enabled Angelto lighten the burden of hisresponsibilities. “The scholarshiphas allowed me to cut my workto part-time and still be able toassist with my family’s budget.”

    Additionally, the scholarship hashelped Angel free up time to helphis family adjust and excel in theirnew home town. He has enrolledhis sister Nikoleta (above left),his mother Viara, and his fatherSlaveyko at BCC to studyalongside him.

    Achievements

    The BCC Foundation honored five faculty and staff members who embodythe spirit of excellence, innovation and dedication to studentsuccess. The 2002 Margin of Excellence Award recipients wereinstructors Art Goss, Alan Yabui and Iraj Paydar, Volunteer TutorProgram Manager Tess HelesHunt, and Information TechnologySystem Specialist Tim Longpré.

    Help, I’ve Got a Middle Schooler! A Practical Guide for Families waspublished by Dr. Susan Quattrociocchi, Director of BCC’s TechPrep program. The book is a helpful resource for parents dealingwith the challenges and joys of adolescents and a planning guideto make the most of a child’s future education.

    Research indicates that 97% of students report satisfaction with BCCstudent services. A new Virtual Bookstore brought more servicesto students via the Web. Students purchased books, registeredfor classes and made tuition payments using new online services.

    Several BCC athletic teams advanced to the Northwest AthleticAssociation of Community Colleges (NWAACC) championships:men’s and women’s cross-country, women’s volleyball, women’stennis, men’s basketball, men’s soccer and men’s baseball. Themen’s soccer team won the NWAACC Tournament Championship,and the men’s baseball team took second place.

    Four BCC coaches were named ‘Coach of the Year’ for the NWAACCNorth Region including Fred Thompson (soccer), Tony Miranda(volleyball), Mark Yoshino (baseball) and Rick Turner (basketball).

  • AwardsEfforts of the college as a whole and several outstanding individualswere honored during the past year.

    BCC was honored with the Eastside Economic Leadership Award fromthe Bellevue Chamber of Commerce in May. The award recognizedBCC’s contribution to the development of employmentopportunities on the Eastside, both as an employer and asan educator of a highly skilled workforce. During the 2000-01academic year, the college employed over 1,500 instructors andstaff, and also added to the Eastside economy by spending asignificant portion of the budget on goods and services fromEastside businesses.

    The American Lung Association of Washington awarded the PhilanthropyAward to BCC for the implementation of new smoking policiesover the last few years. BCC received the “Breathe Easy” awardfor eliminating exposure to second-hand smoke throughout mostof the campus.

    BCC received over $4 million in funded grants to support a variety ofdiverse campus programs and projects. Funds from theWashington State Library Services and Technology Act providedimproved and expanded library services for a culturally diversestudent population; a grant from the U.S. Department ofEducation funded BCC’s new TRIO Student Support Servicesprogram for low-income and first-generation college students;funds from Washington Campus Compact supported a newservice learning project; and two grants from the National ScienceFoundation funded the ongoing development of cyber-securityand information technology skill standards.

    BCC received a Certificate of Commendation from the Washington StateBoard for Community and Technical Colleges for exceeding allthree of its Performance Reporting targets for the 1999-2001biennium. BCC was recognized for educational performancein three areas: preparing students to transfer to four-yearinstitutions, preparing students to move directly into theworkforce, and achievement of certain skill levels by students inAdult Basic Education and English-as-a-Second-Language programs.

    For the second year in a row, the Eastside Local Planning AreaPartnership, which includes the WorkFirst program at BellevueCommunity College, was recognized as the state’s top performingwelfare reform partnership. The office had the highestemployment retention, highest child support collections, second-highest caseload reduction and second-lowest return by peopleto the welfare rolls.

    GretchenJankauskasStewartFirst E-Commerce Graduate:A Worker Retraining Success

    Two years ago, GretchenJankauskas Stewart lost herjob as a tradeshow director –the first time she had been withoutwork in 34 years. She enrolledat BCC and pursued a newE-Commerce degree being offered.

    “I had recently been bitten by theE-commerce bug, so that’s exactlywhere I needed to be,” recalls the54-year old first-generation collegestudent. “The professors tailor-fit

    the program tomy needs, andI’m very grateful.”

    Today, asthe firstgraduateof BCC’sE-CommerceWorkerRetrainingprogram,

    Stewart has successfully blendedher pre-existing skills in eventplanning and retail marketing withnew technical and businessE-Commerce skills and is pursuinga career in online marketing asa liaison between independentretailers, wholesalers andonline consumers.
