A number of environmentally induced difficulties were encountered during the conduct of the 2001 Southern Regional Performance Nursery. The most severe winter (2000-2001) in the past decade led to significant winter-kill of many entries, primarily at sites north of the Kansas-Nebraska border. In addition, entries 31-36 were infected, or suspected to be, with a seed-borne pathogen. Hence, several cooperators did not harvest these entries. This necessitated some adjustments in typical statistical procedures. Data were evaluated in the following manner. Yield data from individual locations were reported for all entries, including 31-36 (when harvested). Responses to pathogens also were reported for all entries. State-wide, region-wide and production zone summaries were computed with entries 31-34 excluded. Their inclusion would have led to unbalanced designs and complicated interpretation of results. Stability analyses also were computed with entries 31-34 excluded. Entries 35 and 36 (missing from 3 locations) were included in state-wide and production zone analyses when complete datasets were available, and were included in stability analyses. These two entries were excluded from compilation of mean region-wide grain yields. In calculation of state-wide, region-wide and production zone mean responses, values were not adjusted for winter-kill. Hence, grain yield of many lines from southern programs was depressed at northern sites. The region-wide mean response might not be as instructive as in typical years.
