I N D I G E N O U S P R O F I L E E X P L A N A T O R Y N O T E S...........…………………………….INTRODUCTION 1. The Indigenous Profile provides 29 tables containing key census characteristics Household 11. A household is defined as a group of two or more related or unrelated people

of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander persons, families and dwellings. Some tables who usually reside in the same dwelling, who regard themselves as a household, provide comparisons with the non-Indigenous population. All data contained in this and who make common provision for food or other essentials for living; or aprofile are based on place of enumeration and exclude overseas visitors. person living in a dwelling who makes provision for his/her own food and other

essentials for living, without combining with any other person2. Information was collected from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing. (see also Indigenous household).

3. Each table title in the Indigenous Profile consists of two parts. The first part lists 12. For census purposes, the total number of households is equal to the total the variables included in the table. The second part describes the table population. number of occupied private dwellings.

The question used in the 2001 Census was 'Is the person of Aboriginal into the 'Partial income stated' category.Torres Strait Islander or Torres Strait Islander origin?'. Respondents could report Aboriginal origin, Status Torres Strait Islander origin, both origins or neither. Indigenous family 14. An Indigenous family is a family where either the reference person and/or

spouse/partner is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin.Employed full-time/ 6. 'Employed full-time' means that the person worked 35 hours or more in all jobs part-time held in the week prior to Census night. 'Employed part-time' means that the Indigenous household 15. An Indigenous household is a family household where any family in the

Industry 16. The industry classification is an indication of the main job only.Family 8. A family is defined as two or more persons, one of whom is at least 15 years of age,

who are related by blood, marriage (registered or de facto), adoption, step or fostering, Nfd 17. Nfd means 'not further defined'.and who are usually resident in the same household (see also Indigenous family).

Occupation 18. The occupation classification is an indication of the main job only.Family income 9. Family income is the sum of the individual incomes of each resident family

member aged 15 years and over who is present in the household on Census night. Overseas visitors 19. Overseas visitors are excluded from all tables in the Indigenous Profile. If any family member aged 15 years and over did not state their income, or wastemporarily absent, family income is not calculated. These families fall into the Place of enumeration 20. The Census count, based on place of enumeration, is a count of every person'partial income stated' category. Family income is not applicable to non-family who spent Census night in Australia where they were located. People are countedhouseholds, such as group households or lone person households; or where they are on Census night, which may not be where they usually live.to people in non-private dwellings. Census data are also available on place of usual residence.
