Since the death of her son, DamianCorrenlc, Pamela Corrente has been verybusy trying 10 get the word out to chil-dren with thoughts of joining a gang thaithere are alternatives to a life of crime. In -response to the anti-violence public ser-vice announcement, sponsored by theVeterans of the Vietnam War, which wascreated by Mrs. Corrente, efforts are con-tinuing in the campaign for Gang Aware-ness Suppression and Prevention(GASP) program. The PSA was pickedup immediately by ABC/channel 7 andplayed during "Rosie." "Regis" and "TheView." The PSA is also shown on theLong Island station, Channel 12. Thisresulted in speaking engagements acrossLong Island in schools, churches etc.

Thanks to the Freeport Rotary Club, there is now a beautiful Memorial Gar-den at the Freeport Recreation Center inhonor of "Damian Corrente and all thosewhose lives have been taken by vio-lence," as the inscription says. "We havealso begun a "Damian Corrente Memori-al Youth Foundation" in an effort to sup-press the significant increase in gang, gun, and street violence and stop thealarming rate of deaths among our chil-dren," Mrs. Correnle said.

Her next project is a documentary togo into the schools to educate children(ages 10 and up) about the dangers andconsequences of this violent way of life.Realistic alternatives for prevention willbe shown.

As members of Fight Crime, Invest inKids, Mrs. Corrente has been to Albanywith Chief James Russo of Heinpsteadtrying to get funding for after-schoolactivities for children.

She has worked on several occasionswith Sergio from STRONG (Strugglingto Reunite Our New Generation,) going

into schools and community organiza-tions to educate children and offer alter-natives. "After-school programs andextra curricular activities are mandatoryif we want to slop this wave of slreet vio-lence. After-school hours are the PRIMEtime for juvenile crime and we MUSTtake care of our children," said Mrs. Cor-rente.

Frank Hunler of ihe Freeporl RolaryClub donated a boat to help withfundraising for the continuing fight toeducate. Raffle tickets will be sold for achance to win the boat during theFreeport Nautical Festival at the FrankHunter Marina. The winner will bedrawn at a later date.

The community newspaper - the glue thathelps hold a community together,

, and the spur that helps keep it moving forward.

A little changecould mean a lot

Traveling is broadening because you seehow other people do perfectly well in acompletely different way of life. And sosometimes it is enlightening when you get anew idea.

And the circumstances may not always behappy. , „,;

A recent trip to the emergency room inSaratoga Springs late one night was an eye-opener. The waiting room was clean, well-lighted with free .water and coffee andnewspapers on hand. Best of all, there wasa little alcove for children with books, toysand even a computer.

Another time, in Florida, a pediatrician'soffice rivaled Disney World, well perhaps, not quite. But there was a tree-house, agym, tunnels and slide.

These were not high-income areas, butthey had high-quality services. Relativelyspeaking, the expense could not have beenso high, but the rewards are obvious if youhave ever spent time in some of the localemergency rooms.

There, you will find exasperated, ill andexhausted parents berating children forbeing, well, children. The most they eanfind to entertain their children with are anold newspaper and a pencil, hours after theTV starts to lose its charm. Of course, itwas an emergency that brought them thereand they didn't have lime to pack as if for apicnic.

The recent tragedy in which a small lotwas beaten to death by a caretaker stuck toolong at an emergency room might not havebeen prevented - bul then again, it might.

Wouldn't it be worth it to try?

HARLEM Lasl week, along with 46oilier women from the Mercy Medical Cen-ler League, I loured Harlem. And onceagain, as ollen happens when I go on a cul-tural trip, visit a new museum, or see a newneighborhood. I was reminded of Ihe manygaps thai exist in my formal education.

Our firsl slop was (he Apollo Theater, now landmarked. hul always acknowl-edged as the place where new talent wasfostered. Built in 1913, amateur nights start-ed in 1934 and lasted until the 1970s, resum-ing in the early 1990s. On a wall of famewas a collage of Ihe greals of ja/./ and rockand roll. Into the theater we walked.

Whi le all of us were invited to per-form, age and self-consciousness looktheir loll and we all passed on the oppor-tunity. On a rainy. Tuesday morning, aswe walked onto Ihe empty stage, lightsdimmed and music silenced, il was hardto v i sua l i / e Ihe v ih ran l performancesthat launched so many careers.

Off to Sylvia's we wenl to eat our tradi-tional Southern meal of fried chicken, ribs, col lard greens, rice and potato salad. Lessspicy than Ihe Caribbean enhanced cuisinethe B a l d w i n Chamber of Commerceenjoyed at the local restaurant, "Comnrcadand Caviar," th i s repast, nevertheless, caused everyone to forget calories and cho-

lesterol as we ale heart i ly and viewedframed and autographed pictures thai filledthe restaurant's walls.

Then up to the historical heart of Harlemwith a stop at the Schomburg Center forResearch in Black Culture. Here an exhibi-tion entitled "Africana Age: African andAfrican Diasporan Transformations in the20th Century" encorporales hundreds ofpictures which "survey the social, political, and cultural struggles of the black worldduring the 2()lh century." There was silenceas 46 white women viewed photographs ofblack Africans being used as beasts of bur-dens and of newspaper photos showinglynchings, civil rights marches, rallies andprotests. We saw photographs of importantblack leaders in labor, politics, religion andentertainment. Slowly, room by room, theclimate of black history moved from one ofcolonial domination to legal acceptance, from accomplishment to the recognition ofthose accomplishments.

Our final hour in Harlem was spent lour-ing the streets, seeing its residential andcommercial rennaisance. On the wide mainboulevards, some with landscaped medians, there were no burned out buildings and fewempty shops. We saw children in schooluniforms with backpacks filled with books. We saw the orderliness of row houses and

the elegance of Strivers1 Row with its mil-lion-dollar brownstones restored with hugeoak doors and flower-filled window boxes. We saw the old Alexander Hamilton farm-house, first built when Harlem was "coun-try," and now squeezed onto a small lotwith barely an inch between it and an adja-cent church. We saw a block of old brickand wooden farmhouses with front porchesand small yards that are in the midst of arestoration that is being funded through thephilanthropy of Brooke Astor.

We viewed the majesty of CCNY whosegranite spires on the western h i l l s ofHarlem recall generations of serious learn-ing as well as philosophical arid politicaldifferences. And occasionally, on the sidesof buildings, we saw murals calling forunity and ethnic pride. One mural, with pic-tures of indicted but not convicted police-men, was sobering. The writing pro-"claimed, "Innocent in youf community;guilty in ours."

Majestic churches and an occasionalmosque soared over the smaller buildingsand we were told that many tourists, partic-ularly Europeans, come to Harlem on Sun-days to hear the magnificent gospel choirs.

Heading back to the Triborough Bridgewe crossed 125th street, past the towering

New York Slate building and its impressivewide plaza. It was built through the advoca-cy of Governor Nelson Rockefeller in hisattempts to revitalize Harlem. Almost threedecades later, that revitalization is in fullswing. The move of former President Clin-ton to offices along this same street is anadded concern for many longtime residentswho fear the growing genlrificalion.

As we meandered our way back to LongIsland, I thought of my education, one thatfocused mostly on Western European histo-ry as seen from a while, male perspective.

Not only did that narrow curr iculumdeprive people of color of Ihe facts of theirown heritage and deny them Ihe pride ofachievement, but so. loo, were the rest of usshort-changed. How many of us grew upunaware of the information we should havehad to develop a more accurate picture of thepast, one that would have given us a betterunderstanding of its impact on the present.

With my head resting back and my eyesclosed. I thought about my day. I wassilent, trying to process all that I had seenand heard. But gradually, as I sat quietly, 1could hear the songs of my youth and I wasfilled with regret. I should have gotten upon that stage at the Apollo to sing. I couldhave performed....maybe next time.

FHS kids go corporateHigh school internships provide stu-

dents with a powerful link between acade-mic study and possible careers. Districtprograms that maintain solid partnershipsbetween schools and businesses createviable opportunities for students to provetheir work ethic before they enter intoadvanced study or a business environ-ment. In addition, it's never a bad idea forstudents to receive money in return for thework they do as they are gaining profes-sional experience.

Freeporl High School has provided anumber of such opportunities for its stu-dents through the School to Career Pro-gram. Most recently, the School to CareerProgram has provided academic enrich-ment for six Freeport High School stu-dents, who have earned stipends duringthe past several months for their internshipwith Logicon. Logicon, a subsidiary ofNorthrop Grumman Corporation, main-tains a number of divisions that providetechnology solutions and information ser-vices to clients on the corporate and gov-ernment levels. Freeport High School stu-dents have worked closely with the pro-fessionals from Logicon's Internal Infor-mation Services Division on such tasks asdocument formatting, Web design, techni-cal support, and computer repair.

The planning for this internship projectbegan in September, when Freeporl HighSchool's Director of Workforce Prepara-tion, Marilyn Stuzin, teamed up -with JohnLoonan, manager of Logicon's Bethpagesite. From there, a number of profession-als from both the school and the companycontributed to the design of this year'sprogram. Ms. Stuzin explained how someinit ial development took place. "Muchlike our partnership last year, our initialmeetings with the Logicon team in Sep-tember were designed to provide structurefor the students' internship experience,"Ms. Stuzin said.

"We worked through such issues astransportation, time frames, and objectivesto make sure that each of the students'responsibilities was well-defined. As aresult, we have designed a project thatprovides the best possible experiences forsix of our most industrious students."Each student was assigned a specific taskwith a Logicon information technologyspecialist ready to assist. Senior MarlineAlexandra has worked under the directionof Fran Mulholland in document format-ling. "We've been using PowerPoint,Excel, and Outlook to organize data forclienls," Marline said. "I'm learning howihese programs can be used lo make officework more efficient."

Organizing data has also been a majorconsideration for the three students whoare part of the Web design team. Sopho-more.Michael Drew, senior Johan Ortiz, and junior Akkie Thompson have eachdiscovered lhat planning and maintainingan Inlernel sile for clients is a process thai

involves many sleps. "I've learned lhatwhen you market your abilily lo produce aWeb site for clients, you're not just givinga sales pitch," Akkie said. "You're mar-keting, your ability to provide a strategyfor clients."

Informat ion Technologist Dr. BobEllinger explained the effriciency of thisstralegy: "Michael, Johan, and Akkie haveorganized data for Web sites by process-ing what ,we call use-case based require-ments. This means lhat these students arelearning how to set up all the details of acustomer's specifications for a sile beforeIhey even begin the coding in HTML orJavaScript."

Many of the selected students hadgained some familiarity with computertechnology prior lo Ihe inlemship. SeniorsBrandon Dengler and Wesley Robert, forexample, built upon their prior experiencein their work with Logicon's technicalsupport and computer maintenance spe-cialist Phil Rizzardi. "I've learned a lotabout troubleshooling software, repairingmachines, and working with networkservers," Brandon said. "It's the kind ofwork I really enjoy."

High School Assistant Principal Mau-rice Grant expressed his hope that thesestudents will serve as role models to otherFreeport High School studertls. "We wantall students to see that there is a l inkbetween the skills they learn in class andIhe career opportunities available tothem," Mr. Grant said. "We're working toprovide experiences that will provide asolid background for their future."

There's a new Superintendent in Freeportby Laraine A.TVfilazzo

Freeport residents heartily welcomedEric L. Evcrsley as the Superintendentof Schools at the May 23 meeting of theBoard of Education. Recently electedhoard member Michael J. Raah praisedihc hoard members on thei r ' in tensiveselection process and enthusiasticallyextended his "best wishes" to Dr. Ever-slcy.

"Tonight w i l l start bringing" a won-derfu l new era to the school distr ict .Both Mr. Raab and newly elected boardmember Dr. Joseph A. Catlanp thankedboard members for their spirit of coop-eration.

The board was accused of-fa i l ing tocommunicate the fact that Dr. Evers-ley's former contract"with Eastern Suf-folk BOCES had not been renewed.

Board President Ronald Ellerbe dis-agreed and said that the issue had beendiscussed. Some visitors spoke out indefense of Dr. Eversley. "This manhasn't been given a chance," said oneparent. Another member of the Atkin-son School PTA told the board mem-bers and audience that when the PTAmet wi th Dr. Evers ley, he was"extremely forthcoming"-concerningthe situation.

"We need to go forward," said thePTA member to an o u t b u r s t of

applause: After the meeting, well wish-ers gathered around Dr. Eversley tolend their support.

Freeport res iden t Alan Jay askedboard members if there were a lawagainst enlarging the size of the schoolboard. Interim Superintendent DavidNydick responded that the proposalneeded to be approved by a public vote.

Mr. Jay requested that hoard-mem-—-bers encourage-principals to investigate -physica l f ights between s tudents toascertain the initial aggressor. Mr. Jayrecounted an experience his son hadmany years ago. Another student hadpunched his son three times before hisson retaliated, but both students weresuspended. Dr. Ellerbe responded that

phy is to discourage any violence: Chil-dren can jus t w a l k away, said Dr.Ellerbe. Dr. Nydick added that princi-pals do investigate all such matters.

Pointing to the great strides made bystudents in state testing, trustee AlbertRenken requested that the teachers andadministrators stand and be commendedfor their part in the process.

In other business, board membersapproved a $1 10,200 bid for renova-tions at the Dodd School k i tchen. Inaddition, trustees approved the accep-tance of a gift "in honor of the retire-ment of two special education teachers,

. June "Stride and Sandy Schwartz." Bothteachers chose to bestow their gift upona student in the special education pro-gram.

A number of Freeport's teachers wereawarded tenure at the meeting to theapplause of many. Also on the receivingend of applause were students of theNew Visions School who treated theaudience to a presentation.
