To The Leader:I thank the voters of Nassau County's

19th Legislative District for re-electingme as their County Legislator. I amhonored, privileged and humbled by themany comments of support expressed tome during the campaign and by the voteof confidence registered on ElectionDay. "̂

Also, I thank Michael Carroll for run-ning for office and participating in thedemocratic process.

I look forward to working with theincoming Suozzi administration to con-tinue the efforts to restore fiscal stabilityto Nassau County. I will continue tohold frequent town meetings on issuesaffecting the County and our local com-munities and look forward to helpingconstituents with any problems relatingto our government.

Dave Denenberg,County Legislator,

19th Legislative District

To The Leader:On behalf of my entire campaign

team, I'd like to extend my deepest grat-itude to those who supported our efforts, and my sincere congratulations to DavidDenenberg who, prevailed in Tuesday'selection for Nassau County Legislator.

For over five months, our campaignworked tirelessly to bring home themessage of real fiscal responsibility andlower taxes. I feel very satisfied that we

were able to bring these important issuesinto ' the great public debate on ourCounty's future. At this historic time, there are no Republicans and noDemocrats; there are only concernedresidents who yearn for a return to fiscalresponsibility for Nassau, combinedwith effective leadership.

I urge those who supported our causeto unite behind our County Legislatorand County Executive-elect, because ifthey succeed, we all succeed. I inviteyou to join with me, give them someroom, and wish them well. • May Godbless Nassau County and this greatnation.

Mike Carroll

To The Leader:Now that the November 6th election

is history, I am deeply concerned abouthow filthy the streets of Baldwin havebecome. I have always had so muchpride in my hometown community andnothing will ever change this. However,I am disturbed to see so much debrisalong Grand Avenue, the main artery inand out of our wonderful town. On anygiven day, one can witness smashedsoda cans along the edges of curbs,Burger King and McDonald's cups andwrappers blowing around, empty pizzaboxes strewn about the grounds of shop-ping centers, candy wrappers, cigarettebutts, gum glued to sidewalks and news-papers flying around or buttonholed into

Several empty stores are plasteredwith For Rent signs and there are grassand weeds growing all along these samevacant properties. Some empty storeshave broken. windows, ripped awningsand look disgusting. Some vacantrestaurants with For Rent signs havegrass, pieces of wood and debris allacross the property. Hello! Is anybodyhome? No wonder they remain empty.Who in the- world is going to even con-sider buying or renting a storefront inBaldwin that looks like a dump? Insome cases, local Realtors own thestores they are trying to rent and oneonly wonders when they will decide toreach into their pockets and invest incleaning up the property so that it willhave a better chance of being rented.

Lastly, I am sick and tired of seeing

Many more need to comedown, but we made a start to removethese posterboards promoting weightloss and work from home "opportuni-ties." I would encourage the BaldwinSanitation Department, Baldwin FireDepartment and others to assist inremoving these ugly and ridiculoussigns that seem to have popped upeverywhere in town. I plan on deliveringthe signs we took down to local authori-ties, who had better do the right thingand track down the people breaking thelaws and putting them up. A correction

Veterans called to correct us on our editorial last week, inwhich we tried to distinguish between two important days.Memorial Day is when we honor all those who have died whoserved our country in the armed forces and related agencies.Veterans Day is for both the living and the dead who served. Some are still serving in many ways.

This is what we were trying to express when we saidMemorial Day was for those who lost their lives and are nowgone, and Veterans Day for those who gave (all or a part of)theirs. The most important difference is that the latter includethe living, people we can thank in person, perhaps even givethem a hug. They are still with us, and we appreciate theirsacrifices now more thamever.

Be prepared

The Red Cross of Nassau County has sent suggestions sothat residents will not be caught offguard as we were onSeptember 11, should another terrorist attack occur here. Insome cases, they mirror the preparations for a natural disas-ter we should already have in place, but they are well wortha review. Only this week they would have been helpful forthe residents of Belle Harbor in the Rockaways, where a trag-ic air crash took place.

1. Choose a person living out of town that each member ofthe family can call or e-mail if you are not together at the timeof the attack. Leave these numbers at school and work. Checkthe school policy on emergency pickup.

2. Have a meeting place out of town, where pets can stay.3. Pack a bag with important papers, medicines, flashlights,

a battery-powered radio or TV, cash, food, bottled water anda change of clothes and sleeping bag.

4. If disaster strikes, follow the advice of local emergencyofficials. Check for wounded and give first aid and get helpfor the injured. Check for damage and fires and gas leaks,

5. If asked to evacuate, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pantsand sturdy shoes. Take your disaster supplies and pets. Shutoff utilities if requested. Lock your home. Travel routes set bylocal authorities and avoid downed wires.

6. If asked to "shelter in place," remain in your home oroffice. Close and lock all windows and exterior fans and turnoff fans, heat and air conditioning. Close the fireplacedamper. Go to an interior room without windows that isabove ground level and bring your disaster supplies kits.Listen to the radio for instructions on when to evacuate.

DECISIONS.... Now that the localelections are over, it is time for the politicaljockeying to stop and for important deci-sions to be made.

It seems that for the last two years,Baldwin has gotten stuck in the battlesbetween the two political parties. There hasbeen a major disconnect between town andcounty government and that has got to end.

At the town level, Anthony Santino haswon his three year term and we certainlyhope that he continues the pro-active repre-sentation of the community that he initiat-ed when he had the misfortune to draw theshort straw, winning only the one year termlast year.

During this past year he was every-where. His greatest outreach was in begin-ning local community meetings where res-

idents could outline their concerns andraise issues for consideration. That mustcontinue.

At the county level, Baldwinites haveconfirmed their desire to be represented byDemocrats in the three legislative districtsthat comprise Baldwin. Along with aDemocratic County Executive, these legis-lators must be vigilant in making sure thatthe county delivers its services.

It was alleged that there had been somefoot dragging by departments and agencieswhich were headed by Republicans so thatDemocratic legislators were not seen asaccomplishing anything. With new leader-ship, one assumes that county projects willnow move ahead with speed.

The most important of these projects isthat of the First Police Precinct. For too

many years the move of that precinct to anew facility on Grand Avenue has been thecarrot held out by campaigning candidates. There was a press conference about theproject over three years ago and two yearsago, during campaign time, Baldwinitesfirst heard it was a "done deal," which washardly true.

Then the county's appalling financialcondition put the bonding of such a largeproject on hold. Now the county is serious-ly under pressure to put its house in orderand County Executive-elect ThomasSuozzi has said that the financial health ofthe county will be his first priority.

Residents also passed the propositionrequiring the county to project its four yearcapital expenditures for better and moreaccurate budgeting. Now is the time, there-

fore, for the county to make a decision onthe First Precinct. Will they build a newFirst Precinct? Will they build it inBaldwin? Will it be built according toexisting plans, which have already cost$750,000 in fees, on the west side of GrandAvenue, north of Merrick Road?

Police, residents, landlords and mer-chants are awaiting the county's answer. All three county legislators for Baldwin are.apparently in favor of the project, accord-ing to comments made at a PTA forum lastyear. But the project, which would have tobe bonded, requires a super majority vote -13 votes from a legislature that has tenDemocrats and nine Republicans.

Legislator Joseph Scannell has said that

Dissection: Food for thoughtadapt to its environment," Mrs.Papayanopolous said. "Students learnthat there are big differences betweenthe male and female frogs just by dis-

secting and comparing them. Then weteach students why those differences areimportant."

THESE STUDENTS are preparing to open the abdominal sac of a bullfrog.Syntax Photo/Ed Luhrs

Last year, the students in SamSlutsky's science laboratory at AtkinsonSchool found something out.of the ordi-nary during a dissection: a snake in abullfrog's stomach. "Most students tendto think that a snake would eat a frograther than the other way around, so thiswas an amazing find," Mr. Slutskyexplained. "With a little investigation,we discovered that it was a milk snake.Since the milk snake hails from thesouthwestern United States, we conclud-ed that the bullfrog came from the sameplace."

That discovery put a whole new spin'on bullfrog dissection for this year'sclasses, as students probed stomachswith the hopes of finding something asexciting as the milk snake (now pre-served in formaldehyde for all to see). What students eventually discovered byexaming the contents of the stomachwas that what the bullfrog eats reflectsthe biome, or ecological community, from which these oversized amphibiansoriginated.

Mr. Slutsky and science facilitatorSherrie Papayanopoulos make use ofvideo technology to demonstrate properdissection and to identify the bullfrog'sanatomy. The Ken-O-Vision Video Flexcamera projects an image onto a large-screen television, so that the teacher can

grade class worked on one such lessonin the CARS workbook, involving anAfrican folktale about a war between theanimals and the birds. A thrifty batattempts to join both camps andbecomes an outcast who only comes outat night.

Students were challenged with a num-ber of questions about the story. Somepoints of investigation included thesequence of events in the story; how thebat compares and contrasts to the.otherwoodland creatures; what might havehappened if the bat chose to do some-thing different; what the word outcastmeans in context with the story; anddrawing conclusions based on the infor-mation provided.

Once students develop these kinds ofreasoning strategies, they move on tonew reading challenges.'

Revitalization project continuesWith the help of Congresswoman

Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4), the HUDAppropriations Conference Report, whichincludes, a $150,000 allocation to help.improve the viability of Freeport's down-town area, passed the House ofRepresentatives 401 -18.

The visionary and aggressive programFreeport is pursuing for the CentralBusiness District builds on ideas ofFreeport residents themselves rather thanoutside planners. The RevitalizationProject reinforces the community's goal tocelebrate and promote the ethnic and cul-tural diversity, "of Freeport. Freeport'sdowntown has been identified by NassauCounty as a major center in the county, but,it needs to be rebuilt after suffering througha mid-90's fiscal crisis.

With their own limited resources',Freeport has covered much ground in thepast 12 months. The Freeport Community

Development Agency, using CDBG funds,'developed a new combined grant/loan pro-gram to make substantial and permanent"improvements to building exteriors.Through this plan, building owners areresponsible for 50% of the constructioncosts and the owners can finance theirshare through a guaranteed loan providedby Citibank. The response has been dra-matic: more than 60 owners in the project'starget areas have applied to participate inthis program.

However, so much more needs to bedone to help revitalize Freeport. Themoney will help Freeport to improve theinterior of existing buildings. Thisincludes adding ADA compliant elevatorsto many of Freeport's buildings. Due totheir lack of second floor accessibility, many businesses have not rented space inthese buildings.

JUSt \A/ritO by joan delanoy

from page 5the estimated costs for the project include$7 million for construction and another $7million for the acquisition of property. That's a hefty sum for a county in debj.- One can imagine the pros and cons in .discussion of the topic. However the votegoes, the county must make a decisionsoon as the properties involved have beenin limbo for over three years.'

If the project is%ot approved for thatsite, then both the county and the townmust quickly step in and begin a bipartisaneffort to improve the area. That is what wasoriginally promised over three years agoon a beautiful summer day when then-County Executive Thomas Gulotta andTown of Hempstead Supervisor RichardGuardino held a joint press conference. Atthat time, Thomas Glynn, a Republican, represented Baldwin in the County legisla-ture and the three Republicans wereeuphoric in describing a revitalized down-town.

Baldwinites are fed up with the politicalpitting of county against town. We wantBaldwin to. bustle with positive improve-ments akin to the progress CouncilmanSantino managed to make happen as hecampaigned for his three year term ofoffice.

If the police precinct move is notapproved, then the town, which boasts of a$50 million surplus, must step in andaggressively coooperate in helping land-lords improve their properties. At the sametime, both town and county departmentsand agencies must be vigilant in enforcingbuilding, sanitation, health, fire and safetycodes.

The political posturing must come to an

end. Campaigning cannot begin now forthe next round of elections. And whenpolitical strategy sessions do begin, candi-dates must be sure to recognize that theywill be judged not on what they have pre-vented another elected official fromaccomplishing but rather on how muchthey have done and how they have cooper-ated with officials from opposing parties indoing more for Baldwin.

In the recent past, I have challengedCongress and the New York State :

Today, I ask each of my fel-low residents to help play a key role incleaning up and beautifying our belovedBaldwin. No high technology or cost-prohibitive program is required here. Under sunny skies and brisk windsmembers of the Freeport SchoolDistrict, local government and invitedguests gathered on Ray nor Street to cel-ebrate the official groundbreaking of thenew New Visions Museum School ofExploration and Discovery.

The ceremony kicked off with aparade of student and staff representa-tives from the New Visions schoolproudly wearing blue sweatshirts dis-playing their school name and an .American flag. The Freeport HighSchool Red Devils Marching Band andColor Guard accompanied the parade. At the start of the ceremony, those pre-sent demonstrated their patriotism byjoining together to recite the Pledge ofAllegiance and to sing the "StarSpangled Banner."

"The road has been long, but it waswell worth the trip," stated KishoreKuhcham, Freeport's AssistantSuperintendent for Business and theevent's Master of Ceremonies. "Todayas we slip the spades into the-soil wecelebrate not just the construction of aschool building, but the work that wi l l -be housed here shaping the future of ourchildren."

Currently, the school is housed in afacility leased from Holy Redeemer. The new school will provide space for gprojected increase in enrollment as wellas an expanded Library Media Center, cafeteria and special areas designatedfor art, music, computer technology andspecial education services.

"Today is the start of a future ofexpanded opportunities for our chil-dren," stated Superintendent of SchoolsDr. Eric L. Eversley. "This constructionis just one chapter in an emerging story."Dr. Eversley thanked the Board ofEducation for. their vision and energy, the parents ,who supported the district'sefforts and the surrounding communityfor their cooperation. He closed by say-ing that the new New Visions schoolwill be a place where students can"experience the wonders of explorationand the joys of discovery."

Freeport Board of EducationPresident John Muscara joined thosewho recognized the community lor theirsupport. "I applaud those who haveworked so hard to bring us to this day,"

stated Mr. Muscara./'We are going tohave an incredible school we can all beproud of."

Mayor William Glacken was on handto celebrate this historic event inFreeport. "The education of our childrenis the most important endeavor we canundertake," stated Mayor Glacken."You will look back when we actuallydedicate the hew school, and you will beproud of your role in making this a real-ity." Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.joined Mayor Glack'en in praising the

. Freeport community for its commitmentto the childrens' future. "This is the firstarid only groundbreaking I have attend-ed in my tenure," stated the Senator. "Isee a future mayor, teacher,, and maybeeven President here in Freeport. There isno greater reward than educating themind of a beautiful young child."

The celebration continued with wordsfrom New Visions Principal KatherineHynes. "Rarely does a principal havethe opportunity to open a new school,"she said. "It takes many hands andminds to build a school. Thanks to theBoard of Education and theSuperintendent who support the visionof a new school. Thanks to the parentswho place their most prized possessionsin our care and provide support. In thesemost troubling times, the new NewVisions school symbolizes the future."

No ceremony would he completewithout hearing from the students them-selves. The New Visions fourth-gradechorus, under the direction of chorusteacher Ruth Breidenbach, outdid them-selves as they entertained guests withseveral songs specifically selected forthis special occasion, while other stu-dents shared essays expressing their per-sonal feelings about their new school. '

The celebration continued with themoment everyone had been wailing for.One by one, New Visions' student repre-sentatives escorted members of theFreeport School District, the Board of•Education and communi ty officials tothe designated area for the off icialgroundbreaking.

As each shovel entered the ground, the hopes for the future could be heardin the thunderous applause coming fromthe audience as they witnessed this his-toric moment in Free-port history.
