Introduction Yoga today has reached unsurpassed levels of popularity. More people are practicing yoga today than ever before. You may have heard someone say, "Yoga helped my back pain," or even "Yoga saved my life." Why is this?

Some of the reasons for its popularity are that yoga can: be a way to prepare for the day's activities, increase attention and focus, reduce stress, stabilize mental and emotional issues, maintain vitality from youth through old age, alleviate a wide range of physical ailments, support women through many life changes, allow our body-mind to be more sensitive, improve relationships, and support our spiritual and personal transformation.

Being a yoga teacher can be a deeply fulfilling journey. The ability to share the tools of yoga and their positive effects can be a source of vitality and good energy for the individual. Being a yoga teacher empowers one to participate in a way of living that emphasizes the importance of having a healthy body and a clear mind.

Yoga is a process that can allow us to move more deeply into an understanding of who we really are. It can make us more sensitive so we focus on the things that matter. This tradition of yoga supports a deep acceptance our uniqueness and individuality. Therefore, it can be a way of connecting with our own source of light within.

1

viśokā vā jyotismatī We can be free of suffering by being connected to the light within.

– Yoga Sutra I.36

"Be a light to oneself." – J.Krishnamurti

The Teacher Training Program The New School of Yoga (NSY) teacher training program is intended for future or current yoga teachers who are open to a holistic approach to yoga, with an emphasis on the mind-body connection’s powerful relevance to healing.

If you are…

looking for a foundational program to explore the source materials of yoga, wanting to study yoga oriented to therapeutic applications, open to becoming knowledgeable about the different tools of yoga beyond asana (such as pranayama, visualization, chant…) and how they apply to a healing practice, and most importantly, wanting to learn how to adapt yoga practices to each individual for their own well-being

…then this course will be an excellent match for you.

This teacher training is accredited by the Yoga Alliance, students will receive the designation of a Level 1 200-hour Yoga Teacher. For students wishing to deepen their understanding of yoga and yoga teaching in 2016 and beyond, this teacher training will be the foundation for a Level 2 300-hour yoga teacher training. Finally we will offer an additional 250-hour Level 3 training to complete a 750-hour training.

THE SOURCE The approach behind this foundational 200-hour Teacher Training by the New School of Yoga directly traces to T. Krishnamacharya, who was a scholar, healer and yoga teacher. He is often referred to as the father or the inventor of modern yoga, since he taught most of the people who brought yoga to the West, namely BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois and most relevantly his son TKV Desikachar. TKV Desikachar is known for the emphasis of adapting poses to the individual and tailor-making personal practices to meet the individual’s needs. This can be applied to using yoga for healing; New School of Yoga’s teacher training serves as a foundation for yoga therapy and further yoga therapy programs.

T. Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar also taught the art and discipline of Vedic Chant and the use of sound in yoga practices.

CERTIFICATE AND ACCREDITATION The New School of Yoga foundational teacher training is accredited by the Yoga Alliance. Students who complete and meet all the requirements for this course, will receive a Yoga Alliance 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher designation (RYT 200). NSY is a Registered Yoga School and has received recognition from the Sandhini of Krishnamacharya Yoga, based in Chennai, India (www.sky-yoga.net).

FACULTY Rowan Lommel will be the main faculty for this course and assisted by other teachers in this tradition, namely her mentor, Kausthub Desikachar. We will spend a weekend with Kausthub in September, which is an incredible opportunity to study with one of the most powerful yoga therapists in the world.

PREREQUISITES Participants must have practiced Yoga for at least of 6 months, although a year’s practice is recommended. Participants must be mentally and emotionally stable and willing to embark on a journey of personal transformation involving self-reflection and self-empowerment.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY The course will train teachers to emphasize function over form, and the use of all the tools of yoga, not just asana, but also pranayama, visualization, meditation and the use of sound. Students will have a solid understanding in the history and background of yoga as well as the philosophy behind the yoga practices. Chapters I and II of the Yoga Sutras will be chanted, studied and discussed. Students undergoing this training will also have the personal attention of a mentor who will help them with their own personal practices. They will analyze yoga practices, and finally learn to teach on their own through demonstration and discussion. Days will include both yoga practice, study, and discussion; portions of the course will involve yoga practice analysis, listening skills practice for yoga counseling, and other modalities.

INQUIRY-BASED CURRICULUM One foundation of this course is learning about oneself in relationship, learning about one's conditioning and habits (vāsanā-s & samskara-s), and the art of looking and listening. It will be a personal journey that will also serve as a foundation for professional development and your counseling role with clients. It is only when we link with our deepest self that we are able to help another. In that light we will have a weekend (August 8 & 9, part of Week Intensive 2) devoted to shared inquiry, learning about ourselves, and the nature of awareness and yoga. This retreat-type weekend will be held at the Krishnamurti Center in the beautiful East End of Ojai and will include time for reflection and walks in nature.

RELATIONSHIP WITH A MENTOR The relationship between student and mentor is central to yoga. Regular meetings, the development of a personal practice and its evolution over time form an important part of the training process. The NSY Teacher Training includes 5 hours of personal mentoring that are to be scheduled individually. These 5 hours will be used to support the trainees in the personal practice and growth as an individual and as a yoga teacher. Any additional time with the mentor can be scheduled individually.
