CORE Liner

CORE Liner is a dual containment, pipe-in-pipe system that combines the high-pressure capacity of steel with the corrosion resistance of plastics. CORE Liner consists of an outer steel pipe and an inner high-density poly-ethylene (HDPE) liner. The outer steel pipe is joined using the proprietary ClickWeld® mechanical interference fit joining system, whereas the HDPE liner is joined using electrofusion fittings.

ClickWeld® is the innovative proprietary mechanical joining system of CORE Linepipe®. The ClickWeld® system uses a combination of carbon steel components to form a gas and liquid tight connection that eliminates the need for field welding.

At the CORE Linepipe® factory, a bell is created on each pipe end using a cold-work process. This bell allows the ClickWeld® components to be inserted without creating a flow restriction at the ClickWeld® connection.

Next, a mandrel made from a high-grade carbon steel is inserted inside the bell and a ring, of the same material, is pushed over the bell, compressing and plastically deforming the steel pipe onto the profile of the mandrel.

In the field, the field end is inserted onto the mandrel of the factory end. Next, the field press ring is pulled over the mandrel, compressing and plastically deforming the steel pipe onto the profile of the mandrel. This forms the mechanical connection and completes the ClickWeld® joint.

Electrofusion fittings (EF) have been used world-wide for over 70 years and offer a simple and dependable means of joining plastic pipe. CORE Linepipe® worked with industry experts to procure the highest quality fittings and to establish a controlled fusion process based on industry best-practices. CORE Liner Dual-Zone EF has a copper conductor plowed into the fitting and is fused using an electrofusion control unit (ECU).

The ECU is programmed to establish the fusion parameters of temperature, voltage, and time by scanning the barcode on the fitting. The ECU also provides a permanent record of the fusion details.

The ECU supplies the electric energy necessary to heat the copper conductor. When the copper conductor is energized, the polyethylene of the EF melts and forms an expanding pool which comes into contact with the surface of the pipe. The sustained introduction of heat and pressure causes the liner surface to melt and a mixing of the liner melt and the EF melt takes place.

Following the termination of the fusion cycle, the fitting and the pipe are left to cool and the melted material solidifies to form a homogeneous joint stronger than the parent pipe.

These charts reflect the expected friction loss in a CORE Liner pipeline for a variety of flow rates. Currently, the 4", 6" and 8" product sizes are commercially available. The 10” and 12” are under development.

The smooth polyethylene inner layer of CORE Liner provides excellent flow characteristics with minimal friction loss. The maximum flow velocity and the maximum flow rate for a particular pipeline will depend on the level of friction loss that can be tolerated and on the likelihood and impact of potential water hammer events. Erosion is typically not a limiting factor for flow velocity in polyethylene lined pipelines in liquid service. As a guideline, the industry commonly uses a typical maximum flow velocity of 13 ft/s, resulting in the following flow rates and friction losses in water service:

QA & QC

CORE Linepipe® implements industry-leading quality assurance and quality control programs. Components of the CORE Liner system adhere to international standards and are inspected using the principles of Six Sigma quality control. CORE Linepipe®’s robust quality programs allow for complete traceability from the factory to the field, and make it possible to provide each customer with a project quality binder upon the completion of the project. We focus on quality, so you can focus on everything else.

The safety of all stakeholders is at the forefront of the CORE Linepipe® business model. Safety and quality have been considered throughout the development of every strategy, process, system, and product. The CORE Linepipe® team takes pride in having a safety and quality culture that is built on:

• The engineering of safety and quality into process, product, andequipment designs.

• Critical assessment of hazards and work procedures to ensure the safe andefficient operation by production and field personnel.

• Documentation of processes, inspections, incidents, and daily toolboxesfor training, monitoring, and compliance.

Safety

CORE Linepipe® has successfully worked through Manufacturer’s Health & Safety Association to obtain our COR (Certificate of Recognition) with a 2017 audit score of 96%.

In March of 2018, CORE Linepipe® launched a companywide safety campaign to increase the engagement and further improve the safety culture. The “See Something Say Something Do Something” campaign is working to improve behaviors and advance CORE Linepipe®’s pro-active, operations-owned safety culture.

The CORE Service field spread consists of a track hoe; a hydraulic installation equipment for ClickWeld® (nicknamed Walter); an electrofusion control unit; and all required tools, trucks, trailers, and quads. Field spreads vary in size from 3 to 5 people (foreman, lead hand, electrofusion technician, laborer).

CORE Service

CORE SERVICE SPREAD

The minimum bend radius of CORE Liner is 20D. The product must be cold bent to ensure that the internal liner is not compromised. Bends larger than 30-degrees should be factory bent and must be pre-ordered.

CORE Liner risers are factory bent and are available in 45- or 90-degrees. CORE Liner risers allowcustomers to have a corrosion-resistant pipeline from flange toflange, without having to resortto expensive internal coatings.CORE Liner risers must be pre-ordered and the customer sign-offon the CORE Liner riser drawings isrequired prior to bending.

BENDS

RISERS

25WWW.CORELINEPIPE.COM

Page 26: 200, 2002 Timberloch Place The Woodlands, Texas 77380

Flanges are to ASME B16.5 and are joined to the CORE Liner pipeline using the patented ClickWeld® joining system. Each flange connection comes with an HDPE stub-end, ClickWeld® components, and an electrofusion fitting to easily connect to an existing CORE Liner pipeline. The design of the flange assembly has safeguards against excessive strain on the HDPE stub end, thereby eliminating a failure mode common to other liner systems.

CORE Liner is suitable for HDD and boring applications.

CORE Linepipe® has developed custom pull heads to be used when pulling drag sections of CORE Liner. These reusable pull heads are specially designed to eliminate damage to the mandrel while providing excellent tensile pull capability.

CORE Service

Above ground and below ground tie-ins can be accommodated. At risers and tie-in points where a CORE Service team is working in the ditch, bell holes are required with proper entrance and egress, following industry best-practices.

CORE Linepipe® requires accessible bell holes that are big enough to accommodate the installation equipment, Walter. Typically, a bell hole of at least 8 feet wide by 20 feet long is required. CORE Liner field crews are able to cut the pipe to custom length on location using standard CORE Liner product.

CORE Service

TIE-INS

27WWW.CORELINEPIPE.COM

Page 28: 200, 2002 Timberloch Place The Woodlands, Texas 77380

Crossings where drag sections are required can be treated just as conventional steel line pipe. Roped bends or long sweeping bends react the same as conventional line pipe and are easily incorporated into the CORE Liner system design.

Flow T’s and Y laterals must be constructed using lap joint flanges and are easily integrated into the CORE Liner system. As CORE Liner is a corrosion resistant system, flow joints must be coated with an appropriate product to meet the demands of the intended service.
