TOLL STRUCTURE CHANGE - Know before you go!

Commercial Traffic

As approved by Transport Canada, commercial travellers will be pleased to note that as of January 1, 2017, the toll will be determined exclusively by the number of axles on the ground when crossing the toll plaza. Therefore, raised axles will no longer be subject to tolls.

In its place, Transport Canada has approved a $0.25 increase to the 2015 extra axle rate. Along with the impact of 75% of inflation since then this brings the extra axle rate applicable on January 1, 2017 to $8.00 compared to $7.50 in 2016.

Additionally, the B-train category has been eliminated. Previously, the B-train rate had been established at 1.5 times the 5 axle rate. In 2017, this results in a saving of $11.25 on a typical 8 axle configuration.

Toll Rate Increase

Effective January 1, the 2017 toll rates adjusted for 75% of year-over-year inflation (CPI) are as follows:

Toll Rates 2017 2016

2 axles $46.50 $46.00

3 axles $54.50 $53.50

4 axles $62.50 $61.00

5 axles $70.50 $68.50

6 axles $78.50 $76.00

7 axles $86.50 $83.50

8 axles $94.50

B-Train N/A $102.75

Per axle rate $8.00 $7.50

Motorcycle $18.50 $18.50

per year!Vehicles using the Confederation Bridge consume one-tenth of the fuel and other energy that a similar crossing using a ferry would consume, leading to a significant decrease in the generation of greenhouse gases. The elimination of inefficient waiting times and idling vehicles at the crossing has led to a corresponding reduction in pollutants being released into the atmosphere.

New for 2017: Special services and related fees established as follows:

Pedestrian Extra Baggage Fee

The purpose of the Confederation Bridge shuttle is to provide transportation across the Bridge to those individuals who do not otherwise have a method of travelling across the bridge, for example pedestrians and cyclists. Over time, the demand to move more than just individuals has grown to a point where capacity on the shuttle has been negatively impacted. For this reason, a small fee of $4.00 will now be charged for each piece of baggage beyond the complimentary first bag.

Apprehensive Driver

Over the past number of years, we have experienced a rather steep growth in the number of apprehensive drivers requiring assistance from Bridge personnel. This has had a significant impact on operations as bridge personnel, who are otherwise tasked with bridge operations, safety and maintenance, are called upon to drive third party vehicles for apprehensive drivers. To compensate for this disruption to normal bridge operations, Transport Canada has approved a fee of $40.00 for those customers requiring the services of Bridge personnel to drive their vehicle across the bridge. Please note that all apprehensive drivers requiring assistance from Bridge personnel are required to sign a release/waiver prior to crossing.

Out of Gas $100.00

Out of Gas

Running out of gas on the bridge causes an immediate safety risk for all travelers. With due care this situation can be avoided. Accordingly, Transport Canada has approved a fee of $100.00 per incident to serve as a deterrent and make sure motorists do not put themselves and others at unnecessary risk.

Wide Loads

Wide loads requiring a full lane closure are scheduled Monday to Thursday of each week at 12:00 p.m. This crossing time was established in consultation with the industry and represents the best possible solution given that wide loads cannot travel after sundown. Beyond the fact that a wide load crossing is a 30 minute inconvenience to the travelling public, these crossings also require the services of Bridge personnel to clear the 13km bridge of traffic and escort the wide load vehicles. To compensate for this on-going interruption to services, Transport Canada has approved a wide load fee in the amount of $200.00 for each wide load requiring a full lane closure.

Please manage the risk of running out of gas on the bridge.

While gas is commercially available 24/7 on the PEI side of the bridge, this is not the case in New Brunswick. The closest gas station to the bridge in New Brunswick is located on Route 16, approx. 17.5 kms from the Bridge. Normal hours of operations as published are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday - Friday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Hours are extended until 9 p.m. during the Summer. Please keep this in mind when leaving your destination and travelling to PEI!

Introducing Self-Serve Shuttle – At Long Last!

Shuttle Pass

In addition to the regular shuttle service, users will now be permitted to deliver their pedestrians to the other side of the bridge using their own vehicles. This service, using the StraitPass transponder system, will result in a net charge to the vehicle of $15.00 instead of the usual charge for $46.50, if the trip is carried out within a specified amount of time. This discounted rate will apply irrespective of the number of pedestrians on board. The transponder will be issued at no charge.

How does the Self-Serve Shuttle work? Customers wishing to use this system must set up their own StraitPass account by visiting straitpass.com. All StraitPass accounts require a valid credit card for payment purposes. Once the registation has been compeleted and approved, your vehicle shuttle pass will then be sent via mail to the address provided. To ensure accurate reading, your Shuttle Pass must be attached to your rearview mirror when travelling through the StraitPass lanes. The entire process is dependant on the round trip being completed within the allocated amount of time.

Travelling from PEI to NB: 1. Depart PEI via the StraitPass lanes in the Toll Plaza. Users will be charged the standard toll rate of the vehicle being driven.

2. When you arrive in NB, drop off your passengers and return to PEI.

3. When you arrive in PEI, proceed to the Bridge Operations Building (104 Abegweit Blvd) where you will need to scan your Shuttle Pass to complete your trip. Users will then be refunded the difference between the current 2-axle rate, and the self-serve fee of $15.00.

Travelling from NB to PEI: 1. In NB, remove your Shuttle Pass and enter the Cape Jourimain Nature Centre. There you will be required to scan your pass at the barcode scanner.

2. Once scanned, return to your vehicle and cross the Confederation Bridge.

3. When you arrive in PEI, drop off your passengers and proceed straight to the Toll Plaza and pass through the StraitPass lane. Users will be charged the standard toll rate of the vehicle being driven. Users will then be refunded the difference between the current 2-axle rate, and the self-serve fee of $15.00.

Time allowed from PEI to NB and back: 40 minutes Time allowed from NB to PEI and back: 40 minutes

The system is for transportation of individuals only and is not for commercial use.

Warning: A nice sunny day may affect your travel plans!

It is no secret that winds play an important role in affecting travel plans, particularly for high sided vehicles. In fact high sided vehicles have been restricted anywhere from 20 minutes to a record 56 consecutive hours. Wind events occur 45 times per year on average, mostly between October and March. So, what is a high sided vehicle and what are all the vehicle configurations that are restricted during a wind event?

A high sided vehicle is defined as any vehicle exceeding 7 feet 2 inches (2.2m) in height including any fixed or removable rack. Vehicle restrictions also apply to motorcycles, and any vehicle with anything in tow.

7’2” or 2.2m

During wind restrictions, trucks on PEI are required to park their vehicle in the parking lot provided by the Government of PEI at proximity to the bridge. See map below.

On the New Brunswick side, vehicle triage is carried out at exit 47 (Route 955) on Route 16. Trucks may then park at the truck parking lot at this facility which has been recently expanded by Transport Canada.

In all cases, we remind truckers not to park on the street or highway as this becomes a safety issue for motorists and pedestrians and could cause property damage in residential areas.

BEST SHOWS EVER!In 2017, Confederation Bridge returns as proud Presenting Sponsor to the best of summer entertainment on PEI.

From classical to blues and everything in between, the musical raisonnance of St. Mary’s Church characterizes what a pure musical experience is all about. Curated by artistic director Robert Kortgaard, the summer long program selection is sure to please all audiences. If you were brought up on ear buds, then this one is a game changer!

From laughter to drama along with musical interludes, Victoria Playhouse is pure entertainment set in the charming village of Victoria-by-the-Sea!

St. Mary’s Church, a fine example of the French Gothic influence, was built in 1902 by Island architect, William Critchlow Harris. The Harris trademark, a rib-vaulted or groined ceiling, enhances the quality of sound and achieved this with the use of fir, pine, spruce, maple, and birch throughout the building.

Today, St. Mary’s remains the architectural and acoustical treasure that William Harris envisioned; the perfect setting for voice and instruments to celebrate wonderful music. It has been said that the natural acoustics of St. Mary’s rates as one of the top ten places to perform in the world.

The Victoria Playhouse Inc., located in the beautiful village of Victoria by the Sea, Prince Edward Island, was formed in 1981, when residents voted to encourage the production of live theatre in their community hall. It was recognized that the presence of the theatre contributed to the quality of life and the social and economic vitality of the community.

The Victoria Playhouse Inc. is a registered not-for-profit organization and is managed by a five-member Board of Directors, an Artistic Programming Committee and a Managing Director. The company has produced thirty-five seasons of live theatre and performance events emphasizing contemporary Canadian plays and music. On average the Playhouse presents over eighty performances a year and during the peak season (July through September) operates seven days a week.
