Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Five Acres, Littleton.
This is somewhat an unusual occasion to welcome you all here.
This has occurred as our floodlighting and ground improvements have not been completed at our home ground in Green Lane Finham Coventry. We have been on a ground share adventure this season, starting at Coventry Copsewood, then for a short waterlogged period at Kenilworth, where we only played once, and now onto The Vale Stadium, Castle Vale, Birmingham. Unfortunately today the fixture was unable to be played at The Vale, as a previously arranged fixture had been booked already.
So with the cooperation of Littleton FC Chairman, Colin Emms, the game has been reversed to be played here.
I would also like to extend a warm welcome this afternoon to our match officials: Robert Hathaway, Robert Usher and Les Croy.
Good luck to both sides and I’m sure you are all looking forward to an entertaining game of football, I look forward to reading the report on the game as I am at present away on a well anticipated golfing break in Portugal.
I must also bring to your attention, that to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of The Hillsborough Disaster, kick off today will be delayed to 3:07pm, including a minutes silence to show our respect for the 96 who lost their lives on the terraces of Hillsborough on 15th April 1989.

HILLSBOROUGH 1989 Timeline. BACKGROUND It had been tradition for many years that The FA Cup semi finals were played at a neutral ground such as Highbury, Villa Park and Hillsborough. In the semi final of 1981 between Spurs and Wolves there had been 38 injuries, including broken arms, legs and ribs, as hundreds more spectators than were permitted were let into the Leppings Lane Terrace. After this Hillsborough was not chosen again to host a semi final until 1987. In 1984 Sheffield Wednesday were promoted into the First Division. Ground safety improvements were made during this time, the 3 pens in the lower Leppings Lane were increased to 5 and a crush barrier after the narrow access tunnel to the terrace removed, to allow quicker entry onto the terrace. In the 1987 quarter final between Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City serious overcrowding was observed but without serious injury. In 1988 Liverpool and Nottingham Forest met in the semi final and again crushing was reported. Liverpool lodged a formal complaint before the semi final in 1989. After the ground improvements of 1981 the safety certificate had become invalid and had not been renewed, the ground had no safety certificate. MATCHDAY BUILD UP. Only one train was chartered to take fans to Sheffield, whereas the season before three trains ran. This added extra traffic to the M62, where road works caused delays. This caused congestion at the turnstiles at approx. 2:40pm. 5000 fans were trying to gain entry, as some fans presented tickets at the wrong turnstiles this caused a bottleneck and obstruction. To avoid fatalities outside, the order was given at 14:52 to open exit Gate C, this then funnelled the crowd down the tunnel into the already full two middle pens. Game kicked off at 15:00. At 15:05 a crash barrier gave way spilling people on top of each other and against the fencing at the front of the pen. Fans then tried to climb the fence to escape and were passed up into the tier above. Bruce Grobbelaar asked a Police Officer to open the gate to let supporters out onto the pitch. At 15:06 A policeman ran onto the pitch and ordered the referee to stop the game. The response to the disaster was slow and badly coordinated, supporters had to give first aid on the terraces and on the pitch. 96 people died and 766 were injured.
79 who died were under the age of 30 including two sisters, three lots of brothers, a father and son, and Steven Gerrards 10 year old cousin, Jon-Paul Gilhooley. “You are always on our mind”

Alvis—Club History
The Midland Daily Telegraph and The Coventry Herald both record that on the 1st September 1928 Alvis FC, played in the Coventry Combination, against St. George’s at the headquarters of Alvis works in Birmingham Road, Coventry.
The Alvis team read: - P. Moore, Barnes, Jackson, Robson, Jones, Jackson, Smith, A. Moore, Pakeman, Kirby and Buckingham. The referee was Mr W. Pardoe.
On the 29th April 1929 they won their first Trophy 2-1, the Midland Daily Telegraph Junior Cup, attendance 731.
During the war years there was still record of Alvis FC playing in the Coventry Works Association Sports League. There is little record until 1951/52 seasons when the Sphinx Cup was won.
In the 70’s and 80’s the league changed its name having several titles, The Coventry Alliance, The Coventry Suburban League and The Football Alliance.
The 89/90 season Alvis moved from the redundant factory site at Holyhead Road, Coventry to The Butts Stadium now the home of Coventry Rugby Club, the team being called Alvis SGL FC.
Then next year they were on the move again to Sports Connexions at Ryton, before finally moving into the replacement Alvis Sports and Social Club at Green Lane Finham, Coventry, playing in the Coventry Alliance Mitchells & Butlers Football League. The old factory site in Coventry is now a shopping complex, called The Alvis Retail Park.
Alvis FC applied to join the Midland Combination in 1993 playing there until 2001 before returning to play in Division 2 of the Coventry Alliance League. During their time in the Midland Combination Alvis erected covered accommodation for 150 spectators.
2002/03 season saw Alvis promoted to the Coventry Alliance Division One as champions and this being the start of the current resurgence of the club, promotion to the Coventry Premier League came in 2005/06.
In the 2008/09 season Alvis not only won the Coventry Alliance Premiership title, but in their first appearance in a major final they won the Coventry Charity Cup with Nick Farquharson scoring both goals, the second being a late winner.
The following season Alvis continued with their successful run, claiming The Coventry Alliance Premiership, the Birmingham Saturday Vase and the Premier Shield.
Season 2010/11 was pivotal in the club’s current history, whilst finishing runners up they took the decision to re-join the Midland Combination, and were placed in Division One, finishing fifth in their first season.
This opened the door to what was probably the most successful and historic season in the club’s existence, winning The Midland Football Combination Division Title and two Ricoh Arena Finals, The Coventry Telegraph Cup and The Coventry Charity Cup, a unique Treble.
Eighty-five years after the club was founded, virtually to the day, planning permission was granted for floodlights to our ground at Green Lane Finham, what a way to celebrate!
So here we are today!

Littleton FC History The Littleton's are three villages (South Littleton, Middle Littleton and North Littleton) located South West of Evesham, Worcestershire, England, UK. Football has been played in the Littleton's since 1893 when, on November 4th of that year, Littleton defeated Honeybourne 5 - 0 in a friendly game. These games continued until Littleton Star joined the Bidford League in 1903/1904, playing their games at the rear of the Chapel at Shinehill Lane, South Littleton. Various other names were used by the Club, notably Littleton United and Littleton Rovers, before being called the Littletons from the mid 1950s. Various grounds were used for football in the Littletons; The Recreation Ground at South Littleton, the Graft or Croft at Middle Littleton, as well as the ground behind the Chapel, South Littleton. Various changing facilities were also used; the King Edward public house at South Littleton, the Fire Hut at the Recreation Ground in South Littleton, the Village Hall at Middle Littleton and the Ivy Inn public house in North Littleton. In the late 1970s Littleton Football Club decided to purchase its own ground and, after looking at a number of sites, chose to purchase Five Acres on the Pebworth Road at North Littleton. Since then the Club has improved facilities with purpose built changing rooms, a small clubhouse and a stand for spectators. It has now received planning consent for a new clubhouse and flood lights for the pitch. Success took some time to arrive for Littleton football teams and they had to wait until the 1910/1911 season to win their first league title the Bidford League. After the First World War Littleton had a long run of successful seasons winning a number of titles including the Bidford League, Stratford League, Worcester League and the North Cotswold and Vale of Evesham League. There were also a number of Cup triumphs during the 1920s and 1930s. The years after the Second World War brought more success with league and cup wins. From the mid 1950s and through the 1960s Littleton struggled to compete with any consistency and great credit must go to Arnold Drinkwater for keeping the Club going. The 1970s saw a Littleton resurgence with Jim Cox and Brian Ramsden at the helm, and the Club successfully chasing trophies and league titles. The purchase of their own ground in the 1970s saw a move in to the Midland Combination where they stayed for three seasons before financial constraints made them return to local league football. The 1980s and 1990s were a rollercoaster with frequent promotions and relegations until they joined the Worcester League and started winning regularly. In 2001/2002 Littleton returned to the Midland Combination and gained instant success with promotions from Division 3 to Division 2 and then Division 1 in successive seasons. Alongside this came County Cup and Evesham Hospital Cup wins as well. Littleton FC is now established in the Midland Combination. In the 2010/2011 season Littleton won two cups and where runners-up in a third and finished fifth in Division One of the Midland Football Combination. There were also honours for Joe Lolley who received the division one league player of the year. The 2011/2012 was a very successful year for Littleton retaining the President’s Cup and Evesham Hospital Cup and were runners-up of Division One in the Athium Midland Football Combination gaining promotion to the Premier Division. The 2012/2013 season saw Littleton make their debut in the Premier Division of the Athium Midland Football Combination finishing the season runners-up. Littleton have nurtured young players with the result that Matt Smith is now playing for Leeds and Joe Lolley has this season signed a contract with Kidderminster Harriers. Littleton also has a long established and thriving Junior Section with 14 sides providing football for 8 to 18 year olds. These junior sides play at various locations in the surrounding area.

Since my article about the proposed formation of the Midland Football League, I have been asked why I believe this League will be so much inferior to the Southern League and the Northern Premier League. The answer is quite simple, as the Midland League will not have the best teams to represent Midland football. The clubs in the Midland Premier League will only be at Step 5 in the Football Pyramid whilst Midland clubs in the Conference, the Southern and Northern Leagues all play at Step 1,2,3 or 4. Listed below are the following teams playing at these levels who over the years would have made a formidable Midland Premier League. Kidderminster, Nuneaton, Tamworth, Solihull, Oxford City, Gloucester, Worcester, Corby, Hinckley, Hednesford, Buxton, Stafford, Matlock, Leamington, Stourbridge, Banbury, Redditch, Bedworth, Kettering, Rugby, Halesowen and Chasetown. Some of these teams consist of full time professionals, and some have recently played in the F.A. Cup Proper Rounds. In England, we often hear about the north south divide, forgetting that the Midlands stretches from Oxford to Stoke, and from the Welsh Borders to Cambridgeshire. No plans were ever made to form a Midland League, and, sadly, the newly named Midland League will include only clubs that are second best. Indeed, I believe the title of the new League will give a false impression of the Midland non league scene. I do not believe that any of the clubs listed above would willingly play in the new League. The new Midland League will be a good League to play in, just as it is presently in the Midland Alliance and the Midland Combination, but it is certainly not the revolution that is required in Midlands non league football.
