what we do and then the Santa Parade, where people were driv-ing four wheel drive bikes with-out helmets and kids are sitting a metre away from all sorts of amusement devices without bar-riers. It seems like double stand-ards, and don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to put the kybosh on the Santa Parade.”Nelson City Council says the cer-tificate of registration is issued by the Department of Labour and

it does not have the authority to change the conditions of the cer-tificate. “We have sympathy with

this issue the club is facing and are aware of other similar rides operating without fencing,” says

NCC’s Clare Barton. The club first got word of the new restrictions when they applied to operate the train at the Tahunanui Camping Ground, something they’re asked to do each year for the

kids staying at the camp. But they were told they’d have to fence the area they operate in. “We’re using the formed private roadways in the camp and there are caravans, motorhomes, cars with boats all using the same road without a barrier fence, but our little Nod-dy Train needs to have a barrier fence. It’s quite strange really.”Peter says they have written to the Labour Department to ask for some relief, but if the fencing rule is enforced the train will be sold. Lisa Dudley, of the Stoke Toy Li-brary, says they were “absolutely disappointed” when they tried to book the train for their open day but were told they couldn’t come. “They raise some extra money for us, so we’re pretty upset.”

The Nelson Suburban Club’s future is looking much brighter on the back of a massive financial turnaround of $600,000.The club, based in Tahunanui, suffered a well-publicised $369,000 deficit in the 2013 financial year, leaving serious questions about its future and various special meetings with members to find a solution. Its latest financial results show a much rosier picture though, with a $221,000 profit for the 2014 financial year. The turnaround has been put down to cost savings, as well as donations from club members. Club manager Rob Finlayson says the feeling within the club is very positive. “The feeling amongst people that come here is very good, but there is still a perception outside the club that things aren’t that good and that’s holding some people back from joining.”Rob says members are under no obligation to donate towards the $100 levy, which was mentioned in media last year, and says the club is now offering a special discounted rate to join for the remaining six months of their financial year. “The club is a fantastic

venue with so much going on so we’re saying to people ‘why not give it a go?’ We’re offering membership at just $25. For that you get cheap drink and food, use of all our facilities like the pool tables, dart boards and the gaming machines.”Rob says for each member who signs up or who visits the club, the more secure it becomes. But it’s not just members that can take advantage of the club’s facilities. Rob says the public can also use their modern facilities for private functions, business meetings, conferences, weddings, 21st birthday parties, trade shows, in fact they will welcome any enquiry at all.A report of the club’s finances by RWCA Chartered Accountants

said the turnaround was an “impressive achievement” but warned that membership needed to increase to keep the club viable in the long term.Rob says the club has around 3500 members, down from more than 6000 two years ago. He says the majority of those “lost” members have been since news of the financial difficulties became known. The club has also had a shake-up of its executive committee and finance management committee, with a raft of new board members. That includes a new president, Leigh Bromell, – the first female president in the club’s history. To enquire about becoming a member of the club call 548 6815.

The event has attracted 48 bands from around New Zealand and Australia with the more than two thousand people involved in the city for the weekend. However, assistance is needed in many areas, including marshalling for the street march and setting up and clearing away after the competition. National’s liaison officer, Helen Gilchrist, would love to hear from any Nelsonian volunteers interested in helping. You can call or email Helen on 03 5474594, 021 277 3752, or [email protected].

Monster slide has been given the go ahead for Collingwood St, after previously being denied consent to use the site due to resident complaints.Event organiser Jamie Templeton says he was receiving live updates of Monday’s city council meeting where the decision was made to run the event. He says the general consensus from the meeting was assuring.“Since Mayor Reece has come on board things have been moving in the right direction, which is positive.”Jamie has been given a number of conditions for the event to take place, including providing parking to the Collingwood St residents and nearby schools.“Now we can focus on the operational aspects, getting all the infrastructure sorted, instead of being tied up more in the regulatory we can focus more on delivering a fantastic event.”Jamie arrived in the region last Thursday to talk to residents, the councils and to scope out alternative venues if Collingwood Street could not go ahead. He says Queen St was good from a road quality point of view but he would have been required to

go through the same consultation processes again.“Logistically, the area is a bit tough. It is quite residential and there are no parks around”He says he has not encountered too many problems elsewhere in the country.“We’ve had a pretty good response across the country without any major problems, the areas we do work in generally have plenty of parking around”Jamie has been looking for volunteers to help with the set up and running of the event.“We’ve had a pretty good response in Nelson, it looks like we’re ready to go for the morning set up.”Monster Slide will run on Nelson Anniversary Day, February 2 on Collingwood St. More information at www.monsterslide.co.nz

For Tyrell Archibald life was good, he had a loving wife Nyssa and beautiful twin daughters and was about to start building their dream home. Sadly, those dreams were shattered in 2012, when the 35 year old builder was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer. Tyrell had always loved his family’s fourth generation farm in Mahana and plans for a house had begun, but these were put on hold while he concentrated on fighting his illness. In 2013, he hoped the cancer had been beaten and started building plans again, when in November, he suffered another setback, a perforated bowel. This resulted in him having to be fed through a tube for a year and building plans were again put aside. At the end of November 2014, he was dealt the strongest of blows when he was told the cancer had returned and this time had spread to his lungs and prostate. The doctors advised it was terminal and he had six to nine months to live. During this time, in a cruel twist of fate, tragedy struck the young family again, when his mother passed away suddenly and Nyssa’s mother passed away just

after Christmas. However, despite all of this, he had never given up on his dream of building his family a home, and his friends and family rallied around to make his dream become a reality.“I always wanted to give the kids what I had growing up, if they have anything like I had they will enjoy it”, says Tyrell. Friends Tony Riordan, Gary Blair, Louise Fry and Rebecca Anderson have been the driving force behind the scenes, fundraising and gathering support. They’ve organised various activities and started Project Archibald on the Givealittle website, which has raised over $35,000 for the cause.“So many people have helped with this project on all levels, and people have been turning up to the site offering things such as materials, their time and baking”, says Tyrell. All builders on site are donating their time for free and Tyrell’s best friend, Ben Robson, quit his job in Australia to work on the build for as long as it takes to

The arrival of the cruise ship L’Austral to Port Nelson saw around 200 passengers enter Nelson city for a day of shopping and dining. High-end passengers on board the luxury cruise ship have come from all over the world, although predominantly from Europe, and were taken out to Queen’s Gar-dens where they enjoyed a taste of some local artists’ work, thanks to Art Group Nelson’s annual exhibition. The L’Austral will also be visiting Nelson on January 27 and February 10, with different passengers on each cruise. The L’Austral is the only cruise ship visiting Nelson this year although 2016 will welcome seven ships, including Europa 2. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

This year’s Brightwater Wine and Food Festi-val is set to be better than ever as organisers from Rotary Club of Richmond perfect the art of ‘back to basics’. The hard work that went into last years fes-tival was well received with an amazing turn out of stall holders and patrons, and an end result that saw around $28,000 raised for local community groups. With an emphasis on offering quality lo-cal wines, craft beer, food and entertain-ment, tickets to this year’s event are sure to be selling fast, along with a limited number of ticket give-a-ways. You can enter by simply emailing your name and details to [email protected]. Set amongst the vines of the beautiful Middle-Earth Winery, the Brightwater Wine and Food festival features a natural amphitheatre, perfect for enjoying the sounds of the local entertain-ment line-up. Acts for the day will include Paul Madsen, Kramit, Urban and Antoni Neale with the Neale Brothers. With the Great Taste Cycle Trail offering a unique entry into Brightwater, and Middle

Earth being so close to Richmond, Rotary have taken advantage of the pedal powered trans-port option once again and will be providing a secure bike storage area, where bikes can be left over night should riders wish to take a bus home. Buses will also be running to and

from the festival from Nelson, Tahuna, Stoke and Richmond. Tickets are now avail-able from Colourplus Richmond, Haven Re-alty offices in Nelson and Richmond, Wake-field Supermarket, Brightwater Motors, Reliance Beta Electri-cal, Specsavers, Vil-lage Cycles, Paper Plus Nelson, Brightwater

Sprig and Fern and Hangar 58. Tickets will be $15 leading up to the event and $20 dollars at the gate. The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival runs from 11am on Sunday, February 15, until 5pm. The event has been put on by the Rotary Club of Richmond with the support of sponsors Fertilizer NZ, Goldpine, Colourplus, Knapps Lawyers, Middle-Earth Winery and Nelson More FM. For more information, visit the fes-tival website at www.bwff.co.nz.

complete. “It has been a very humbling experience, I have had a connection with most of the people helping in some way or another but didn’t really know them too well. I flatted with the scaffolder and there is another guy I went to school with, and they’ve all come together to help out. Two of the builders used to be my apprentices and it is quite funny that they now think they are the bosses. The last thing I want people to think is that they have to work on the house, I hope they are enjoying it. I don’t want them to feel they have to do it”, says Tyrell.Tyrell is still in control of the building project and the builders run everything by him first, but realise, that he may have to take a step back if his next bout of chemotherapy, which starts this week, has the same ill side-effects as his first bout. “It has been my dream to build here for so long. I want to be hands-on and don’t want to sit down and watch it go up before my eyes. If I am sick and the chemo

doesn’t give me a better quality of what life I have left, then there is no point in me doing it, if it prolongs my life by one or two more months that would be nice,” says Tyrell.Even though he is not well and times are tough, Tyrell and his wife Nyssa still manage to tease each other and joke. He says that he

wants the building process to ultimately be a happy and fun experience. They hope the new house will be finished by the time winter kicks in and before the twins start at Mahana School in August. The four year old girls are very excited about their new house and have been helping their dad on site, wearing

their own builder aprons and hammering in nails. When asked what they love about their dad they both say “he is the best dad in the world because he takes us to the new house and buys us ice cream”. New Year’s resolutionsHow to get your finances in shape and stick to it!

Q: School lunches are costing me too much, how can I make them cheaper?

A: Get back to basics and save yourself cash - lunchbox tips that won’t break the bank:

Freeze: yoghurt, home-made muffins, baking etc. has the added benefit of keeping the lunchbox cool.

Make your own jelly with fruit. Make popcorn - can be flavoured to taste. Cut raw veges into shapes/batons (e.g. carrot,

cucumber) or try a handful of cherry tomatoes. Buy fruit that is in season to get the best deal. Sandwiches don’t have to be boring; try getting the

kids to make their own. Get creative: make ordinary foods look interesting

with different shapes and presentations. Find inspiration online.

Snack-foods can be bought in bulk. This cuts costs and packaging waste.

Use leftovers such as bacon & egg pie.If time and fussiness are issues, get the kids to pack

their own lunches. They will enjoy choosing their foods from the options you give them.

The careers of two Nelson trainee pilots are about to take off after they received special awards at the Nelson Aviation College graduation.Oliver Griffith and Justin Sturrock, both 20, were among 15 students who received their Diploma in Aviation at a graduation ceremony held at Petite Fleur, at Seifried Estate Winery in Ap-pleby, this month. Oliver and Justin were also two of the top students, with Oliver receiving the Best Academic Performance Domestic and Justin be-ing awarded the Best All-round Flying Performance Domestic. All the students had completed a di-ploma in either flight instruction or air-line preparation after 76 to 88 weeks of study. Oliver and Justin completed the 88-week New Zealand Diploma in Air-line Preparation, which Oliver says "was intensive and challenging". "We spent the first six months in the classroom doing theory which was quite hard because we just wanted to get up in the planes," Oliver says. "Some of the instrument theory, was really challenging too but it was a very good course."Both Justin and Oliver say they want to become commercial pilots and had already got their private pilot's licences before they started the diploma. Oliver passed his private pilot's licence in his last year at Garin College, while Jus-tin completed his just as he started his studies at the Nelson Aviation College.

Now they have graduated, the next step is to clock up the hours so that they can fly onto the radar of a big commercial airline like Air New Zealand. "We want to work as commercial pilots for a airline and fly jets," Justin says. "Now we have the diploma, we need to get a minimum of 500 hours of flying time before we are eligible to apply for a job with a big airline."Oliver is already accumulating flying hours working as a pilot and camera operator for Nelson-based Aerial Sur-veys. Justin is working as a baggage handler at Air Nelson while he looks for a flying job, and clocks up the hours at the Nelson Aero Club.Justin says the diploma has given them a good start to their flying careers be-cause it included a four-week airline in-tegration course at the Air New Zealand

Aviation Institute."It took us through all the requirements for multi-crew operations," Justin says. "When we fly, there's the pilot and no-body else, but on the jets there's a co-pilot and a whole crew and you have to know how to work as part of that crew."Nelson Aviation College chief execu-tive, Giles Witney, says the college is also an Air New Zealand Aviation In-stitute preferred-flight-training organi-sation. The other graduates were Iain Abel, Sam Arnold, Stacey Cunning-ham, Matthew Eastham, Raymond Fra-ni, Melissa Laird, Scott Martin, Jayden Mossman, Scott McPake, Tobias Read, Jorge Serrano, David Turney and Chan-thavy Phommasane. Nelson Aviation College's next diploma course starts on February 16, followed by another start-ing on August 10.

There’s more to diamonds than meets the eye and with a brand new qualification under his belt, RoCS gemmologist, Brett Grimwood can tell you everything there is to know about that sparkling rock on your finger. The Post Graduate Dia-mond Technology course is offered by the Gem-mological Association of Australia and is a year-long course covering eve-rything from diamond formation in the earth’s crust through to differing types of diamonds, dia-mond qualities and caus-es of diamond colour-ing, faceting diamonds, diamond history. It’s as comprehensive as it gets and is an internationally recognised qualification that only around 600 people worldwide have achieved in the ten years it’s been available. Brett took on the challenge of the year long course to further his knowledge in the world of gem stones, a knowledge which can now be used to reassure their customers that what they are buying is the real deal. With a pass rate of 40-50 per cent, there are only three peo-ple in New Zealand who hold the qualification, including Brett. Normally a classroom based di-

ploma, Brett completed the course in six months through correspondence, which involved re-searching and presenting pages of detailed in-formation in response to questions on topics covering everything within the industry. He

was also required to write a thesis paper on the topic of Blood Diamonds and The Kimberley Process. Having this qualification makes RoCS the home of the number one diamond specialist in the South Is-land, and having trained for four years and quali-fied as a gemmologist, Brett can tell you an aw-ful lot about more than just diamonds. Not only can RoCS test any stone with their in-

store gem stone lab, and grade and appraise dia-monds, they are also the only trade recognised jewellery valuers, as well as experts in design-ing and creating stunning jewellery for any taste using their own unique custom cut gems from Germany. With the qualifications to back their services, RoCS are your one stop jewellery shop in the top of the South Island.

Brett Grimwood is now one of only three people in New Zealand to have passed the Post Graduate Diamond Technologies Diploma.

Nelson families are honing their cricket skills ahead of a beach cricket tournament at Tahuna this Saturday. One of the teams taking part is the Flowers family, after mum Rachel entered a family team in the Hyundai Beach vs Beach 2015 cricket cup. First prize of the tournament is a share in $25,000 worth of family time through the Hyundai Family Time Project. The Flowers team, called the Okiwi Fishers, is made up of Rachel, husband Robbie, and sons Josh, 12, and Ryan 10, along with a couple of other family members who are available on the day to have a go with the bat. Their family team entered and won a backyard cricket competition at The Playhouse on Boxing Day, so they decided to have a go in the beach competition and hopefully continue their winning streak. The family play street cricket nearly every night outside their home, and when asked who is the most competitive everyone points to Robbie. Rachel says they are looking

forward to having some fun family time in the sun.The beach cricket tournament will be held on Tahuna Beach, January 24. Registrations are still open, for more information visit www.familytimeproject.co.nz.

An alternate steampunk reality is set to come to town, with the outdoor summer theatre season starting this Friday. The Body and Space Theatre Company will be performing an adaption of the Jules Verne classic, Around the World in 80 Days, at Fairfield House and Washbourn Gardens.Actor Roger Sanders says the play is a high-energy comedy and the cast have to play a lot of different characters. “The trick is to have lots and lots of roles that have to be performed by a small number of people. So you have 29 parts but you only have four actors.”Director Daniel Allan says due to having so many characters to play they have a lot of costume changes and the set is made up of a combination of suitcases and positioning of the actors bodies. Around the World in 80 Days will show at Fairfield House from Jan 23-30 and at Washbourn Gardens on Jan 31 and Feb 1. All shows start at 6.30pm and a donation of between $5 and $10 is recommended.

Nelson artist Lisa Chandler will start work on a new mural on the corner of Nile St and Trafalgar Square [opposite the Cathedral gardens] this week. Photo: Andrew Board.

Artist starts work on new mural this weekRuby Bay artist Lisa Chandler is used to working on large scale paintings, but this month she will be super-sizing her work when she creates a 33 square metre mural on the wall of the new residential development, Sussex Mews, in Nelson.Sussex Mews developer, James Purves, approached Lisa last year with the idea of creating a mural on the large wall of the complex on the corner of Nile and Sussex streets. James had seen Lisa’s paintings in art galleries around Nelson and knew that her urban themes would fit in well with the

modernist architecture of Sussex Mews. The new work will be 3 metres high and 11.6 metres long and will be able to be seen from the footpath, the road adjoining Bett’s Car Park and from Cathedral Park. Lisa will be working on-site during January and early February, mainly in the mornings to beat the sunshine, and encourages people to come along and have a look. The project is supported by Scott Construction, Nayland Scaffolding and Resene Paints Nelson.

Volunteers for cricket, Tuesday, January 13: More than 50 people have come forward to vol-unteer for the Black Caps game at Saxton Oval today, after a story was published in Nelson Weekly last week. Hayden Bryant of Sport Tas-man says more than 30 of those came forward within 24 hours of the Weekly coming out and the rest the day after, when the Waimea Weekly was delivered. He says Sport Tasman now have enough volunteers to make sure the interna-tional cricket fixture goes ahead smoothly.

Veca Restored, Tuesday, 16, December: After the story of the re-launched boat Veca, Nelson Weekly received an email from Nelson’s Colin Harrison. After Roy Harvey built the boat in 1929 and sold it in 1941 due to the rise in petrol, Colin’s grandfather, Bob Gibbons, purchased it in the 1950s, berthing it at Port Nic in Welling-ton. He then sold it in the early 1960s. The boat was then bought back in 1968 by Roy Harvey’s son Bruce Harvey, returning it to the family. The boat has recently undertaken a refit and is out on the water again under the ownership of Roy Harvey’s granddaughter, Judith Glue, and her husband Pete Glue.

Art Group Nelson, Tuesday, 13, January: Art Group Nelson held their thirtieth annual art ex-hibition at Queen’s Gardens last Saturday. Their decision last year to run the event over just one day worked well again, with a fantastic crowd turning out to view their art, and several artists selling their pieces.

a paddock where they can either dig for water and plant veges or dig a hole and jump in! Plenty of people struggle to make ends meet and pay bills. Those who fall on hard times deserve respect and help and a community who are there for them. But death threats, murders and the rest, that is just disgusting! Amanda Cuff.

Wasting people's time. Honestly, the sooner these losers realise that

the country doesn't owe them a living the better. Brenda Kenny.

Sounds like one 'loser'. And what should we do with people who

can't find work? Let them starve or freeze to death? Next time you want to drive on a road or go to the hospital let me know, so I can decide if I'm happy to spend my taxes on that. Rachel Boyack.

If you can't get a job, you aren't try-ing hard enough. Jake Bertram.

There are also people that want nothing more than to work, but

have medical reasons or they live in a town that doesn't have jobs. Look at Motueka at this time of year, it's full of Pacific Islanders and European's and the orchard owners employ more of them than they do locals. Andrew Boyce.

Dog saved at beach:I'd like to say a huge thanks to those at the back beach this afternoon

(Christmas Eve) who tried to save our wee

dog. I didn't get any names, sorry, but you were all great. Cathy Leov.

Bike at the top of the Centre of NZ im-pressive or destructive?

Ummm yea both....could be dan-gerous if winds shook it off and

someone was potentially hit by it. Sharon May Patterson

Don't think it could blow off, it's pretty well hooked. Sarai Tuhua.

Like most pranks its going to cost someone, and probably the rate-

payer. The NCC will have to send people up to get it down and then dispose of it. There are always consequences. Diane Chandler.

Monster slide gets go-ahead:There shouldn't have been any question on it at all really, Nelson

needs to pull finger as Richmond is grow-ing faster than Nelson. We seem to be at a standstill with growth. Pauline Van Der Plas.

Great, this kind of activity is great for the kids and something differ-

ent. Nelson needs to approve this kind of activity in the future. Brenda Kenny.

You asked about the monster slide on Facebook. I say it's awesome.

Business Update. Adv.

The team at Rowan Dron Electrical are passion-ate about harnessing energy from the sun and using it to power households. They have com-pleted numerous solar installations throughout the region and their customers now enjoy dra-matically reduced power bills. With a PV Solar System, PV solar panels con-vert sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity, which is then passed through an inverter creating viable AC electricity. This AC elec-tricity is used to power the household, while any excess electricity you generate can then be sold back to the elec-tricity companies. Because they use light from the sun (and not heat) they will con-tinue to generate electricity even in light cloud. The cost of PV solar panels has fallen dramati-cally in the last few years while, at the same time, electricity costs just keep on rising. A typical 2kW system can now give you a 6.9% return on investment! That is more than your bank will pay and it means that your system will definitely pay for itself. The bigger the sys-tem, the bigger the return. The cost of installing a PV Solar System will vary depending on the number of panels you need and the complexity of the installation. An average family home will need a 2kW system which, fully-installed with panels and inverter,

costs around $8,000, excl gst. How long it takes for a system to pay for itself varies depending on the size, but an average system takes around 6-8 years to pay for itself completely. While it is possible to sell electricity back to the grid, not all power companies will pay you for your excess electricity and the prices they offer can

vary. Rowan Dron Electrical can explain how to get the best price for your surplus generation. Their entire team are quali-fied solar installers, as well as being Certified Electri-cians with additional man-ufacturers training. They use the best quality gear, all manufactured in New Zea-land and Europe, and their

PV panels carry a 25 year production warranty, while your inverter is warranted for between 5 and 10 years.Rowan Dron Electrical are happy to provide a no-obligation, free, onsite assessment. Once they are confident that a PV system will work for you, they will put together a free quota-tion based on the correct system for your site and your power needs. Because they are elec-tricians, they can advise you on ways you can maximise the savings from your system. Con-tact them for more information or to arrange your free household PV assessment.

Simon Bloomberg

Garin College student, Logan Ford, is about to embark on another big musical adventure when he joins the National Youth Brass Band for its annual summer camp and tour later this month.Logan, who plays the cornet, was selected for the band after a series of nationwide auditions held earlier this year. Although Logan is just 15, it will be the third year he has been in the band which is made up of the country’s most talented under-23 brass and percussion musicians. Logan will join the rest of the band members for a five-day summer camp at the Woodbourne Airbase near Blenheim, starting on January 25. The band then embarks on a tour, giving concerts in Westport on January 29, Nelson on January 30 and Blenheim on January 31.“I’m already doing about an hour’s practise a day,” Logan says. “We were given the concert programme

just before Christmas so I’ve been playing all the music since then.“I’m really enjoying it. There is a piece that has been written just for us and it will be premiering in Westport, so that’s exciting.”National Youth Brass band manager

Dr Garry Brown says the concert programme is titled Summon the Heroes, and will include a bracket of pieces in remembrance of 100 years since the Gallipoli invasion. He says there are “some wonderfully talented musicians in this group”

and four of them will be featured as soloists with the band. Garry says many of the band members have gone on to professional careers in services bands, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, professional conducting and the National Band of New Zealand. The Nelson concert will be held at the Theatre Royal starting at 7pm on Friday, January 30. Tickets at the door or at ticketdirect.co.nz and cost $25 for an adult, $10 for a children with concessions $20.

With the stress of Christmas at an end, now is the time to make a trip into Super Liquor and stock up for these beautiful 2015 summer weekends. With long nights inviting you outside, and a bar-beque on the go, there’s nothing better than sip-

ping away on your favourite drink. Whether you’re a gin and tonic kind of person, you prefer a glass of our local wines, or perhaps a cold beer is your favourite way to celebrate sum-mer, Super Liquor is here for your convenience, stocking the brands you know and love. If you haven’t

been to R i c h -mond Su-per Liq-uor lately,

head in and check out their new and improved store. An Open Day on Saturday 24 is the perfect chance to meet the team and see the big chang-es that have been made, including new signage that has swept through Super Liquor stores across the coun-try with a bright, light blue takeover from the navy alongside their tra-ditional red and white colouring. Super Liquor has also incorporated a new mascot to represent the busi-nesses. Stores were presented with

a choice of icons but it was the Super Liquor Chameleon that won out over the rest and can now be seen sitting high and proud, overlook-ing Salisbury Rd. At their Open Day this Saturday, Richmond Super Liquor will be celebrating with in-house specials, competitions, spot prizes and a sau-sage sizzle. Richmond Super Liquor are staunch supporters of Nelson Speedway and also the Nelson Tigers stockcar team. They will have a Nelson Tigers stockcar on display so that you can get up close and see how they look when they aren’t racing around the track. Super Liquor in Tahunanui is also receiving new branding which will begin this year. As well as a new look nationwide, Richmond and Tahu-nanui Super Liquor are making a few changes of their own. The inside and outside of the Rich-mond store have been painted, new flooring has been laid down and a new RTD chiller has been installed. “I think it just brightens the shop up, you feel a bit more positive about it and proud

Open Day Saturday 24 January

The big, bright blue Super Liquor store on Salisbury Road in Richmond is looking pretty smart after it’s rebranding and al-terations. Call in and check out the results.

services give Super Liquor that friendly, per-sonal touch that their customers love and are what makes Super Liquor a trusted name in the community. Super Liquor Richmond is heavily involved in the community through their support of several sporting teams. “They support us, so we sup-port them,” says Maree, and this includes the Nelson Speedway association, Nelson Tigers, Waimea Old Boys, Wanderers Rugby Club, Brent Nicholls Racing and The Stables Rich-mond Rabbits league team. Supporting locals is an important aspect of the business and it isn’t just the community’s sports teams who benefit. Maree understands how hard it can be to fun-draise successfully which is why, on more than one occasion, they’ve set up the barbeque out-side to raise money for kids working towards trips like World Challenge, and customers love their dedication to the community too says Ma-ree. Super Liquor Richmond and Tahuna pride themselves on great customer service, which is another reason why they’re such a popular choice for those after their favourite drop. “The staff that are here have been here for quite a considerable length of time,” says Maree, and their years of knowledge, as well as training from Super Liquor Holdings, has meant they are, more often than not, able to help custom-ers with any questions or decisions. Whether you’re after a bottle of wine to complement you cooking or you’re trying to suss out the perfect gift for someone special, the Super Liquor team will come to your aid and make sure you walk out the door with what you need. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of their knowledge or advice; they’re always happy to help. With so much variety to choose from, it might not be possible to decide which gift to get some-one, in which case a Super Liquor gift voucher will be much appreciated for that special occa-sion. You can buy vouchers online or in store and if you want to check out the latest Super Liquor specials, sign up and have them emailed to you so you’re the first to know when there’s a great deal on your favourite brands, or you

could pop into either one of the stores and say hello to the team. No matter what you plan on getting up to this summer, do it with the help of Super Liquor, they’re open every day and they’re looking forward to filling your glass.

about the shop. Hopefully customers are finding the changes good. We had a whole lot of chillers around the walls and they’ve all gone, we’ve just got one big walk in chiller now,” says Richmond Super Liquor manager, Maree Pascoe. Af-ter years of supplying the right drink for every oc-casion, the Richmond and Tahuna Super Liquor teams continue to call on their experience when helping their customers have a great time with no waste. services give Super Liquor that friendly, per-sonal touch that their customers love and are what makes Super Liquor a trusted name in the community. Proud to supportthe Richmond Rodeo

It’s rough, it’s tough, it’s the Richmond Rodeo, and it’s coming to you again from the Richmond show grounds this weekend. The annual rodeo will once again entertain its audience with the thrills, spills and action that have made it a favourite on the community calendar, so come on down for a day of rodeo fuelled fun. The Richmond Rodeo is part of a national circuit where cowboys and cowgirls compete around the country in a bid for prize money. The more money won, the more points earned, with the main goal being a spot in the top eight for the National ti-tle. There’s a lot of commitment required to travel, with horse in tow, to rodeos around the country, but to get the most points it’s in every serious cow-boy and cowgirl’s interest to participate in as many as possible. This year’s rodeo will include riders from Kaitaia to Invercargill and, with national ti-tle holders competing in every event, there’s sure to be some impressive sights for spectators. Some of the South Island’s top bronco stock, purpose-bred for rodeos, will be taking to the arena, along with a truck load of 8 Second Bulls ready for a chance to toss some cowboys. Richmond Rodeo secretary, Tina Angus-Phyn, says the event will

also showcase an impressive number of Barrel Racers. “We have a record number of barrel rac-ers competing, which is fantastic. Often we might have 13, 15 or 18; if we had 20 it would be big, but this year we will have over 30, including top New Zealand barrel racers, so that’s amazing, and that’s an event requiring total balance, total speed and total control. The training for those girls to get to that level is amazing.” There are over 200 entries into this year’s rodeo, which kicks off at 11:30am with bucking broncos and barrel racing. The local barrel racing lets chil-dren from local pony clubs enter on the day for $5. It’s a great chance to get into the spirit of the rodeo for any young, aspiring cowboy or cowgirl and “to ride their horses amongst thousands of people is pretty cool,” says Tina. There will be calf rides for kids under 40kg - chil-dren can bring a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of long trousers and ride their own bucking bronco before the second division events finish around 1pm and the grand entry begins. Canadian an-nouncer David Adams will lead the day’s pro-ceedings, bringing an authentic Canadian twang to the rodeo. The flags of Canada, USA, Australia

and New Zealand will be carried on horseback into the arena where the Cowboys Prayer will be said, asking for safety over the arena and show-ing respect for those cowboys and horses that have passed on. Then it’s time for the rodeo we all know and love. The Richmond Rodeo Club have pulled out all the stops to bring you a show to remem-ber with the countries rodeo experts taking on the magnificent 8 Second Bulls from Rangiora, the Broncos from Waimate, Team Roping, Steer

Wrestling and Barrel Racing, as you sit safe in your seats. While the adrenalin-fuelled action isn’t to be missed, there are plenty of sideshows to keep everyone in the family entertained, with Flos-sie the Balloon Lady and a bouncy castle, not to mention plenty of food stalls. Dave Walker will also be there on the day with his Clydesdale horses, offering lolly scrambles to the audience between events. Casey Hayward grew up practicing yoga and dance but was first introduced to Pilates after fracturing her back in a dance competition at the age of 16. Her treatment was a full year of physical therapy, based heavily in Pilates to strengthen the core and lower lumbar. 10 years later she is still practicing a daily combination of Pilates, yoga, and ballet exercises to remain pain free, balanced, and joyful. She is trained as a Pilates instructor through Balanced Body in New York City and holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Boston UniversityMany of us live with moderate to severe back pain, our hectic lives and long hours spent seated in front of a computer or driving affect our back’s health. Pilates can help improve physical function and control pain. Building strength, flexibility, posture, balance, and coordination are all emphasized within any Pilates exercise.Pilates Nelson - Movement for Life Studio opened in July 2013.It has become an oasis in the city for body/mind practice and this year the timetable will expand into Saturday mornings with Casey teaching new classes.

Looking ahead with a HEART AND DIABETES CHECK.New Year is a great time to take stock of your life and your health. A healthy life means being around for the future, spending time with your family and whānau. When it comes to health, you might not consider seeing a doctor or nurse unless you are troubled by symptoms. However, with diabetes or heart issues, (such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol), there are often no symptoms. Left undetected they can lead to a heart attack or stroke, so early detection is key.A heart and diabetes check works out your risk of having a heart attack or stroke within the next five years. It also tells you if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes. The check involves being asked about your risk factors, and getting some measurements and blood tests taken. The check also gives you the opportunity to find out how you can lower your risk.Knowing more about the state of your health is a great way to get motivated, and can make a lifetime of difference.Contact your family Doctor or Practice Nurse to arrange a check and “future-proof ” your health now.

start to 2015Learn Wudang Taiji - Taiji Quan is a part of the greater ‘Taiji System’ which comprises three parts: Taiji, Liangyi, and Wuji.Taiji balances yin and yang. In Taiji Quan we learn to develop and understand our bodies. We learn to conceal hardness within softness. Contrary to the misconception that Taiji Quan is simply a callisthenic exercise for the elderly, it is in reality a deep internal practice which enhances health, flexibility, fitness, relaxation and internal energy suitable for all age groups.Liangyi separates yin and yang. In Taiji Quan soft and hard is combined, in Liangyi Quan, they are separated. Taiji forms are the same speed, with the same balance in softness and hardness. Liangyi forms are slow and soft, followed by fast explosive movements.Wuji – ‘ultimate emptiness’ – we practice Qi Gong to focus on and promote the health and tranquillity of our vitalities.Practicing the Taiji System will help us understand our bodies and minds, and learn the methods to make them clearer, quieter, and healthier. Taiji teaches us not only to train our muscles, tendons, and bones but also our internal awareness and power. Please feel free to attend a demonstration and ask any questions you may have.

Why do Pilates? What sets Belinda’s one2one Pilates workshop apart is her constant pursuit of the question ‘why?’. “I don’t believe in ‘going through the motions’ when helping others to get fit or make gains. I strongly support learning about your body and knowing what you are doing, as well as trying to understand why.” There are many mysteries surrounding Pilates and what it is actually all about. Pilates is a method of movement created by Joseph Pilates in the 1930’s. He designed a series of exercises that help coordinate and strengthen the body while increasing the flexibility of the spine. Pilates is a very positive form of exercise totally focused on the normal, healthy ability of your body, rather than its existing injuries or limitations. Clients of Bee’s workshop typically find they become more comfortable within themselves, either by managing pain, or by improving their athletic abilities in sport. Belinda does offer two2one lessons for those who are interested in sharing with a friend or partner. Massage is also available ranging from relaxation to trouble shooting/sports specific therapies. For more information, or to inquire about availability, visit www.beesworkshop.co.nz or call Belinda on 539 0935.

Their new signage is up and the locals are enjoying the exceptional hospitality of the English-inspired bar and restaurant. Af-ter travelling extensively, Peter and Julie decided to bring a taste of England to Nelson by re-creating their favourite pub right here on Bridge St. Their ideas have now come together to create the perfect place to call in for a relaxing drink or meal, and with a private outdoor dining area The Verdict is well set up to cater to any and all functions, too. Come and check out The Verdict's transformation or give them a call

Nelson road cyclist George Bennett's big goal this season is to break through for his first win as a professional rider.George headed across the Tas-man last week to join his new World Tour team, TeamLot-toNL, for the season-opening Santos Tour Down Under. Al-though he has performed cred-itably in a number of big tours since turning professional in 2012, the 24-year-old has yet to win a stage or one-day race - something he is determined to change. "I really want to win a race - that's my big goal. I won a few when I first went over-seas but haven't got a win since I turned pro."I need to get a win and get that unreal buzz when you cross the line first. I'm in pretty good shape physically and mentally and I'm joining a really good team, so hopefully I can do it."George will have his first op-portunity to chase a stage win in the Tour Down Under which starts on Tuesday. "I won't be in top shape for the race, but I love racing in the heat so who knows. I'll also be better off than a lot of the Eu-ropean-based guys who will be jet-lagged and coming out of

their winter."As well as chasing his first win, George also wants to try and deliver more consistent results. Although George experienced some exhilarating highs with Cannondale last season, in-cluding a top 10 start to the Vuelta Espana, he also plum-meted to some soul-destroying lows. "I need to be more con-sistent and big part of that will be being managed a lot better at my new team. They are very big on sports science and nu-

trition and that's going to help me take the next step up."George says the Tour Down Under will be followed by a team training camp in Spain, before racing in a series of one-day and stages races including Paris-Nice and Ciclista a Cata-lunya in March. If he shows good form in those races, it will increase his chances of be-ing selected for the bigger tours later in the season. The 863km Tour Down Under finishes on Sunday.

Bu-nga and Nuttavut Krataitong, owners of Chai Yo Restaurant and Takeaways in Rich-mond and also Chai Yo Takeaways in Nelson, would like to wish all of their loyal customers a Happy New Year.2014 was a busy year for Bu-nga and Nuttavut who have established two new restaurants in Blenheim while their dedicated team con-tinued to operate the Nelson and Richmond businesses. Although they have missed hav-ing regular contact with their loyal local custom-ers, Bu-nga says she is delighted that the team have continued to operate the restaurants so well, ensuring the continued support of the local community. “We’d particularly like to thank our faithful customers and wish them a happy year in 2015,” says Bu-nga. “I have really missed having regular contact with everyone, but it is great to catch up with them when I get a chance to come home to Nelson.”As soon as you step into Chai Yo you’ll notice the welcoming environment that owner Bu-nga Krataitong has created as well as the finest Thai cuisine. Authentic in taste and prepared

with passion and precision, the food will take your taste buds on a trip to Thailand. Chai Yo is hugely popular with locals for being the only local eatery to serve unique dishes like crunchy

chicken with creamy co-conut sauce and crunchy chicken with sweet soya sauce. “We are thinking about updating our menu soon, and we’d love to have some feedback from customers about what they would like to see on our menu. If you have any ideas, please make sure you let the team know,” invites Bu-nga.

It is important to Bu-nga and the Chai Yo team to support the local community and they like to give back to the people who support them. Their loyalty cards are one way of doing this and in the past they have regularly supported local teams, individuals and charities in their fundraising efforts by offering vouchers for raffles and quizzes. Atawhai man Craig Harford has been made a life member of the Waimea Harriers club after 30 years of membership. Photo: Andrew Board.

A rugby player and cricketer, who only took up running when he left school, has been made a life member of the Waimea Harriers.Competitive running wasn't even on Craig Har-ford's radar when he was a student at Waimea College, where he played the more traditional sports of rugby and cricket. Although he is still a cricket fan, planning a trip to South Africa this year for the World Golden Oldies Cricket Festi-val in Cape Town, Craig’s sporting passion for the last 30 years has been running. "I gave up rugby when I was 18 and was looking for something different," Craig says. "I was living in Appleby at the time and someone I worked with said 'why don't I try running' so I did."I really enjoyed the freedom of running and be-ing able to go anywhere. I was doing a bit of road cycling at the time too but was getting frustrated because it was limited to the roads - it was more fun going running and getting off the beaten track."Craig joined Waimea Harriers in 1985 and start-ed competing in club races around Nelson. He especially enjoyed the Queen Charlotte Relay and club cross-country races, finishing third in the annual Parker Shield when it was held around the old Ngawhatu farm in the 1980s. "Club running was a lot more competitive back then. Waimea Harriers had 10 senior men's teams in the Queen Charlotte Relay one year,

which is pretty amazing."I did a few marathons, but mainly enjoyed cross-country races and training around places like Rabbit Island and along the banks of the Waimea River. I could run 10 kilometres in around 37 minutes in those days but I was really never more than just a good club runner."It was only a matter of time before Craig started helping run the club, serving on the committee and spending six years as vice-president or pres-ident and seven as club captain. He also spent countless hours helping set up courses and is presently planning the half marathon course for the South Island Masters Games in Nelson in October."It's what happens when you join a club. Some-one tapped me on the shoulder and said it's your turn, so I joined the committee."Waimea Harriers' Alan West says Craig has "par-ticular expertise at organising events and, as well as Saturday runs, has organised relay teams, club trips and created, measured and set-up running courses". "He has also been the liaison person with the South Island Masters Games and has been a main organiser of their running events over many years."Alan says it is fitting that Craig received his life membership this year when Waimea Harriers is celebrating its 50th Jubilee. For information about club's events go to the website waimeaharriers.nelson.org.nz

Well, the weather has been reason-ably kind to all over the New Year, with quite a few low wind mornings and the usual sea breezes in the af-ternoon.Word is the snapper have schooled up for spawning time so expect to have less success on the rod and reels and even set-lines for the next few weeks while they are busy. At this time of year we still hear of a few big snaps getting caught but it’s nor-mally the same few stories told to most of the Nelson fishing folk. Some good reports are coming in from around the region, of kingfish everywhere here in the Bay, down the Sounds and Durville Island. Great news for our fishery in the next few years. Kenepuru has had some good snaps showing up and now, with most of the holiday traffic gone, it may be a good place to visit.Durville Island always fishes well and is a magical place to even just boat to or around. Both sides of Tas-man Bay have been fishing well and of course the "spat lines" off Riwaka are always creating they own F.A.D

(fish attracting device) chain of spe-cies.The local spear fishers are having some success when the water is clear enough to see what their target is, with many hitting the favourite spots

at The Glen and also over the spat lines. While on the spear fishing topic, boaties need to be aware of keeping an eye out for these guys safety floats, they are normally a red oblong float and sometimes have a little safety flag up off the top of them, so if you see one

make sure to slow down and take a wide berth as quite often they are in twos and threes. The water temperature has warmed up enough for some early albacore tuna to have been caught. These re-quire quite a lot of effort to get onto but are an exciting fish to catch with high speed runs under the boat and cool colours in the clear water they frequent. Remember to take plenty of ice and bleed immediately and ice down if you wish to keep these in prime eating condition.Be safe out there and enjoy the Top of the South Island.

The Tahunanui Bowls Club is celebrating it’s 75th Jubilee next month. The club are holding a bowls tournament on Saturday, February 28, followed by a dinner at the Suburban Club that evening and an after-noon tea on Sunday. The bowling green was built on land bequest from the Arthur Tosswill estate in the 1920s. In the 50s, the club-house was extended and a second green was put in.Currently the club has around 75 members, al-though Jubilee chairperson Ray Wilson says they have noticed a change in the way people get involved.

“The sport’s experiencing a shift in membership away from full time membership into a growth in casual us-age, business house leagues, that sort of stuff."

He says this is a worldwide trend within bowling clubs.Although the Tahunanui club doesn’t host any major events, Ray says its members do participate in regional

competitions. "It’s a bowling club like most others."Those wishing to attend are encouraged to RSVP by the end of January by contacting Margaret Sly, on 547 3089.

Croquet Nelson is looking for school pupils to try their hand at the sport this summer.Croquet is becoming an increasingly popular sport and Annie Henry of the Nelson Hinemoa club says this is due to a change in attitude towards the game.“People saw it as just gentile ladies and men that played."Annie says the sport is easy to learn but you can spend a lot of time mastering it.

“It’s kind of like playing pool, you can go out, have a good time and be play-ing in five minutes. If you really want to hone your skills it takes a lot longer."The Nelson region has turned out sev-eral young competitors with Hannah Brown from the Richmond club com-peting in the under 21 world champi-onship next month in Christchurch.Annie says the clubs are planning to work in closer with youth and have or-

ganised a meeting for school principals. The clubs supply all the equipment needed and boys and girls can play equally. The first visit to the clubs is free and then $15 for six visits.Local club contacts are: Nelson Hine-moa, Annie Henry, [email protected], 022 3979 303.
