A frequent problem that oily skinners face is too harsh cleansing products. Although some people might like the feeling of a tight skin after cleansing, this is not a sign for healthy skin. From my own experience I tend to place avocado on the top lists of my preferences for cleansing ingredients because it is gentle and has moisturising properties.

Oatmeal and baking soda are physical exfoliators. This means that the cleansing result is achieved by rubbing them onto your skin!

Here are four easy to make and inexpensive cleanser recipes:

1. AVOCADO, MILK & HONEY CLEANSER

Ingredients: 1 avocado, 3 Tablespoons milk, 3 Tablespoons honey

Preparation: Take the content of 1 avocado and mix it in the blender with 3 Tablespoons of milk and honey. If you don’t have a blender just mix everything together with a fork. Wash your face with the mixture in the morning and evening. The quantity will last you one week.

!!!

!2.OAT & HONEY CLEANSER

Ingredients: 1 avocado, 3 Tablespoons milk, 3 Tablespoons honey

Preparation: Take the content of 1 avocado and mix it in the blender with 3 Tablespoons of milk and honey. If you don’t have a blender just mix everything together with a fork. Wash your face with the mixture in the morning and evening. The quantity will last you one week.

According to Samuel Johnson's 1755 dictionary oat is "a grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland appears to support the people...That's why England has such good horses, and Scotland has such fine men!"

It takes between 7 and 10 days for an avocado to ripe once it has been picked. Remember that keeping it in the fridge will slow down the ripening process, so put it in a paper bag with a ripe apple, this will speed up the process. A fully ripped avocado is more easy to handle because the content gets more creamy, perfect for a face mask.

20 Homemade Fixes for Oily Skin3. BAKING SODA & WATER CLEANSER

Ingredients: 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of water.

Preparation: Mix the baking soda with the water and wash your face with it, preferably in the morning. You can add baking soda in your regular cleanser to enhance the exfoliation effect. Use up to 3 times a week.

4. EGG, HONEY & FLOUR CLEANSING MASK

I Ingredients: 1 egg, 2 teaspoons of honey, 3 teaspoon of flour

Preparation: Put together the egg white, honey and flour in a bowl and mix well with a fork until the content becomes homogene and fluffy. You can add more flour if you think it’s too watery. Dip your fingertips in the content and apply it on face and neck. Leave until it

dries then rinse off. It has a slight astringent effect.

!Avocado- one of the most recommended ingredient for dry skin however it can work as a good cleanser and moisturiser for oily dehydrated skin or acne prone skin that has been dehydrated due to the usage of too harsh products. Avocado oil dissolve surface impurities and contains sterolins, beneficial for the treatment of blemishes.

Honey- is generally known for its anti-inflammatory properties that can effectively assist in treating acne-prone skin.

Oat and baking soda- they are gentle physical exfoliators that cause dead skin cell to be removed from the surface of the skin by rubbing them onto the skin.

!!!!!!!Egg white- it helps alleviate oiliness and has a tightening and firming effect on skin.

Toning Oily Skin From all the products on the market toners are the last ones you should be spending your money on. Toners are not treatment products and they don’t require a too complex formulation. Their role is to assist in the cleansing process, either to restore the pH balance of the skin or to deal with left overs from previous products.

The best ingredients for this job are natural teas like Peppermint tea, Green tea (you can use Chamomile tea as well although we don’t include a specific recipe here), lemon and cucumber and almost all of them have astringent properties.

We propose 4 easy toning lotion recipes for oily skin.

Lemon Toner Ingredients: 3 lemon slices

Preparation: Cut 2 lemon slices and pour the juice into a glass of water. Use this lotion to spray it on your skin or to remove traces of impurities with a cotton pad. It has an astringent effect making pores to contract. Keep the lotion in the refrigerator.

1

Peppermint Toner Ingredients: 1 peppermint tea bag, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, water

Preparation: Boil one cup of water and add the peppermint tea. Leave it for 5 minutes and then let the tea cool down. Add on a teaspoon of lemon juice, this is the same with a slice of lemon squeezed. Use the lotion daily as many times as you want to tone and refresh your skin after cleansing. Store in a cool place.

Preparation: Remove the skin and blend the cucumbers. Select the juice by filtering the blended content on a tea strainer.

Optional: if you want an enhanced tightening effect you can add a teaspoon of lemon juice. Store the juice in the refrigerator. This quantity will last you for 3 to 5 days.

3

Green Tea Toner Ingredients: green tea leaves or tea bag

Preparation: Make yourself a nice concentrated green tea. We recommend natural leaves but if you don’t have them a tea bag will also do the trick. Let the tea cool down and then use it any time you need a splash of freshness during the day.

Ingredient breakdown Green tea- weather you drink it or you apply it topically on skin, green tea is a rich source of antioxidants as recent studies show. It has anti-septic properties that are particularly beneficial for treating breakouts and occasional zits.

Peppermint tea- improves the condition of oily skin and, treats inflammation and it is a good astringent to sooth irritations.

Cucumber- tightens up skin, relieves irritations and its nutrients are useful for treating blemishes.

Lemon- the low pH of lemon juice makes it good in fighting bacteria and it contains 5% of citric acid that melts down the intracellular glue allowing for skin cells to regenerate. It has astringent properties and it is promoted as a skin tightening ingredient for those dealing with visibly enlarged pores.

Peppermint has been used for medicinal purposes since 1000 B.C.

Exfoliating Oily Skin There are two ways in which exfoliation of dead skin cells can be done: chemically, with acids that dissolve the connective oils between cells making them easily removable and physically, by rubbing your skin with abrasive parts that dislodge dead skin cells thus leading to an exfoliating effect. Some of the ingredients in the following recipes are known to contain alpha hydroxy acids that work as chemical exfoliators (plain yogurt contains lactic acid, apple- malic acid, strawberry-citric acid, papaya- papain enzyme) while oat and orange peel are effective and gentle abrasives for physical exfoliation.

Basic Clay Mask Ingredients: 2 teaspoons of clay powder

Preparation: Mix 2 teaspoons of clay with water until a paste is formed. Apply it on face and neck and wait until it dries. Rinse off well with warm water.

Tips: you can get clay powder from any drugstore and they are quite cheap. Use any type of clay.

Strawberry and Yogurt Mask Ingredients: 3 strawberries, 2 teaspoons of natural yogurt

Preparation: Cut the strawberries in pieces and blend them with 2 teaspoons of natural yogurt. If you don’t have a blender just mash the strawberries with a fork and mix with yogurt. Apply the mixture on face and neck and leave for 15 min. Rinse off with warm water.

Apple and Honey Mask Ingredients: 1 apple, 2 teaspoons of honey

Preparation: Remove the skin from the apple and cut it into pieces. Blend it with 2 teaspoons of honey. Apply the mixture on face and neck. Be careful, the mixture is a bit runny so make sure you stay still for 15 min. Rinse off with warm water.

Egg, Honey and Oat Mask Ingredients: 1 egg, 2 teaspoons of honey, 3 teaspoon fine oat

Preparation: Mix the egg white with the honey and oat until you form a smooth paste. Add more oat if you feel like the content is too liquid. Apply it on face and leave it for 15 min. Massage your face for 3 minutes before completely rinsing off.

Yogurt and Papaya Mask Ingredients: 1 teaspoon of natural yogurt, a few slices of papaya

Preparation: Mash the papaya with a fork and mix with yogurt until a smooth paste is formed. Apply it on face and neck and leave it for 15 min. Rinse off well.

Orange and Yogurt Mask Ingredients: 1/2 orange peel, 1 teaspoon of natural yogurt

Preparation: Take the skin of an orange and run it through a grate. Mix with yogurt and apply it on skin. Leave it for 15 min. While rinsing off massage your skin for 3 min and fully remove.

Egg & Banana Mask Ingredients: 1 egg, 1/2 banana, optional: 1 teaspoon honey

Preparation: Mix the egg yolk with the the banana until you form a smooth paste. You can add honey as well if you want but it’s not a must. Apply it on face and leave it for 15 min then rinse off.

Banana, Orange Juice & Honey Mask Ingredients: 1/2 ripe banana, 2 teaspoons of honey, 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed orange juice

Preparation: Cut the banana into pieces and mix it well with honey and orange either in the blender or with the fork. Apply the mask on face and neck, be careful, it might run a little. Leave it for 15 min then rinse off with warn water.

Moisturising Oily Skin Below you will find 3 recipe for moisturising masks and another 3 for treating the most common imperfections that oily skin usually experiences.

!Avocado- is a good moisturiser with soothing qualities. This is the ideal ingredient to moisturise oily skin because it doesn’t leave any greasy residues. It is also indicated for soothing irritated skin. Aloe vera does an even better job at soothing skin however we recommend avocado due to its large availability.

Egg- is a natural cleanser and moisturising ingredient. While egg white draws the oils out of your skin the egg yolk is an excellent moisturiser on its own. You can mix egg yolk with other moisturising ingredients like

banana, avocado or honey to enhance its action.

Aspirin- its anti-inflammatory activity is well known and it contains salicylic acid also known as beta hydroxy acid. It is widely used in products that target acne. The aspirin mask is a very popular home remedy to treat pimples, get rid of red marks and generally soften skin.

Tomato- it has anti-bacterial properties and contains lycopene, a compound that is particularly good for protecting skin against harmful UV rays. Tomato juice can be used as an astringent to remove excess oils, calm down itchiness, red and burned skin however, it does give a bit of a tint.

Tea Tree Oil- proven acne fighter as study shows that 5% tea tree oil treated acne as well as 5% benzoyl peroxide. Aesthetician Brenda Harper says that if used in conjunction with glycolic acid, tea tree oil has significant results in treating acne.

Aspirin HoneyMASK

Treating Oily Skin Because of the sebum secretion oily skin tends to clog more often and easier than other skin types. The most common issues experienced are occasional zits or breakouts, frequently congested skin, comedones and redness.

The problem with current solutions available on the market is that they are either too harsh or they are used too often in combination with other harsh products such as exfoliators or peels. This makes the skin dehydrated and even more prone to redness and irritations. Remember you don’t want to abuse your skin with too much exfoliation.

A viable solution is to keep your skin under control with these easy and effective homemade zit solutions:

For zits and breakouts Ingredients: 2 aspirins, 1 teaspoon of honey

Preparation: Crush down the aspirins and mix them with honey. Apply the mask either on whole face or on affected area and leave for 15 min. Rinse well with warm water.

Tomato juice ClayMASK

For topical application Ingredients: 2 teaspoons of freshly squeezed tomato juice, 1/2 teaspoon of clay powder

Preparation: Mix the ingredients together and apply on affected area. You can leave for as much as you want, ideal to apply it as an overnight treatment. You can purchase any type of clay from the drugstore.

Tea Tree Oil Honey Lemon juiceMASK

For congested skin Ingredients: 2 drops of tea tree oil, 1 teaspoon of honey and 2 drops of lemon juice

Preparation: Mix everything together and you will get a slightly sticky lotion. Apply it of your face and leave it for 15 min. Rinse off with warm water.
