Day 1: Heja Game Lodge, Central Namibia (Sun, 9 July)

With its well-developed infrastructure, some of the best tourist facilities in Africa and an impressive list of breathtaking natural wonders, touring Namibia is truly a pleasure. Visit the capital of Windhoek and the lovely coastal town of Swakopmund to discover remnants of the country’s German influence, reflected in the architecture, culture, cuisine and the annual Oktoberfest celebrations. To properly appreciate this extraordinary country, you will have to venture out of the cities to explore the remarkable natural landscapes Namibia has to offer. These include: the impressive Fish River Canyon Park; the vast Etosha National Park teeming with local subspecies, such as desert lions, desert elephants and the Hartmann's Mountain Zebra; the hauntingly beautiful Kalahari Desert; and of course the Namib Desert stretching for nearly 1000 km along the magnificent Atlantic coastline. Namibia is an ideal destination for travellers seeking an unforgettable African experience in a uniquely beautiful untamed wilderness.

The central Namibian highlands are much cooler and less harsh than the arid lowlands that make up the majority of the country. This is great cattle ranching country and most tourism facilities have their origins in cattle and more recently game ranching.

Overnight: Heja Game Lodge Heja Game Lodge is situated to the east of Windhoek, about 1900 meters above sea level, and is enclosed by the Auas Mountains in the south and the KhomasHochland and Eros mountains to the north and west. Heja Game Lodge is the ideal starting point for a ,visit to Namibiasince it is the closest game lodge to Windhoek, and is ideally situated in the middle between Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport. The lodge overlooks the Hoffnung dam which is the oldest man-made lake in Namibia. For the nature enthusiast there is a large variety of different bird species to be found on the lodge and over 2500 head from 13 species of game roam freely on the 20,000 ha farm and surroundings. Visitors can fully enjoy Heja's tranquil setting in one of the 50 en-suite rooms equipped with air-conditioning and satellite TV.The à la carte restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes, with game dishes being a specialty. This, coupled with the

ever-popular Chapel on the Hill and Waterfront reception area extending over the lake, makes Heja an ideal and favored destination. Sossusvlei - The VleiThis is the vlei itself where, for now, the waters of the Tsauchab River disappear into the red sands of the Namib.

Dead VleiThis ancient clay pan was once an oasis, studded with acacias and fed by a river that suddenly changed course, leaving the earth to dry up along with the trees it previously supported. So dry were the climatic conditions that the trees never decomposed – instead they were entirely leached of moisture so that today, 900 years later, they remain

as desiccated, blackened sentinels dotting the pan’s cracked surface. Surrounded by the red-pink dunes of the Namibia Desert, they create a surreal spectacle that is a photographer's dream.

Dune 45Named for its location 45 kilometres past the town of Sesriem, Dune 45 is renowned for its elegant shape, which – along with its position close to the road – have earned it the distinction of ‘most photographed dune in the world’. If you’re not keen for the strenuous hike to the top of Big Daddy, Dune 45 is a more forgiving alternative, standing at only 80 metres and featuring a much gentler gradient.

Now a seaside resort, Swakopmund is the capital of the Skeleton Coast tourism area and has plenty to keep visitors happy. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, colonial-era buildings and the cool sea breeze make it very popular.

Day 9: Mahangu Safari Lodge, Mahango Game Reserve (Mon, 17 July)

Mahango Game Park is a small park, a short drive south of Popa Falls, on the border with Botswana. As Popa Falls is a natural point to break the long journey between Rundu and Katima Mulilo, Mahango Game Park should be considered for inclusion in the itinerary. Driving the route through the park will take approximately half a day. In order to drive the full circular route, an offroad vehicle will be needed. There is a shorter route which can be drivenby a sedan in the dry season. The effort of visiting the park will be rewarding in terms ofwildlife and bird watching. The Mahango Game Park has a high number of elephants, as well as fair numbers of antelopes which are scarce or not seen in other parts of Namibia. These include the roan and sable antelope, tsessebe and the red lechwe. The park is also home to anumber of sitatunga, however these antelopes are very scarce, and sightings will be excellent luck. The best time to see elephants and antelope will be during the dry season. Part of the park borders on the Kavango river, so the possibility of seeing crocodiles exists. In order to see hippos, the traveller should book a nocturnal game viewing trip, as hippos are nocturnal creatures. The best time for game viewing is in the dry months between March and October. The Mahango Game Park is an excellent destination for bird watching. It has three different habitats: the Kavango River, the flood plains, known as omurambas and woodlands, so a wide spread of species can be seen. The best time of year for bird watching is in the rainy months from November to February.

Overnight: Mahangu Safari Lodge The comfortably-styled, thatched Mahangu Safari Lodge is a new lodge in the Caprivi Region of Namibia, next to the Mahango National Park. The Lodge offers beautiful campsites with power points next to the river. Campers are welcome to make use of the restaurant. Day 11: Guma Lagoon Camp, Okavango Panhandle (Wed, 19 July)

Despite recent and surprisingly rapid modernization, Botswana’s cities provide little in the way of tourist attractions. However, what the cities lack in excitement, the surrounding wilderness areas more than make up for in outstanding natural beauty. The country’s primary tourist draw card is undoubtedly the vast red expanse of the Kalahari desert and its remarkably beautiful Okavango Delta - the largest inland delta in the world provide a haven for an abundance of African wildlife. Other highlights include the impressive Makgadikgadi salt pans where visitors are privy to massive zebra migrations during the flood season; the Savuti plains which host large prides of lions; and the Tsodilo Hills where 4500 rock paintings form a unique record of human settlement over many millennia.

The main water source feeding the Okavango Delta, the Panhandle is a stretch of the Okavango River that follows a more-or-less straight course for approximately 70 kilometres before entering the wetlands. It is a deep channel that offers excellent tiger and bream fishing, while the surrounding woodlands and the river’s shallow waters teem with a myriad of birds. Several villages are dotted along the Panhandle, while, some 40 kilometres west, lie the Tsodilo Hills, with their plethora of tribal cave paintings, some dating back as far as 20, 000 years. There are also a number of well-established riverside camps that provide tourist accommodation.

Overnight: Guma Lagoon Camp View iBrochureGuma Lagoon Camp is situated in the Okavango Panhandle and is a bird watchers' haven. If you are a spin or fly fisherman, Guma offers a large varity of fish including the Tiger-fish. The camp offers both self-catering and full board accommodation. Accommodation is provided in spacious canvas chalets, all en-suite and located on the edge and over looking the lagoon. Alternately we have seven campsites under shady tress with private ablutions.Guma also offers overnight camping trips into the Okavango delta on either mokoros or Boats. One can also explore the Okavango back waters at night with only a spot light and the stars as company.

Day 13: Camp Chobe, Chobe River Front (Fri, 21 July)

The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park, renowned for its reliable and diverse game viewing. Safaris are conducted both by boat and on land. This section of the park is best known for its elephant and hippo populations but the waters attract all manner of game including large herds of buffalo and the lions that prey on them.

Overnight: Camp Chobe View iBrochureCamp Chobe is situated in the Eastern Zambezi Region, Namibia merely 4 km from the Ngoma border post between Botswana and Namibia, across the river from the world renowned Chobe nature reserve, home to one of the largest concentrations of elephant on the African continent.

Covering approximately a third of the eastern portion of the Zambezi Region, the Zambezi and Chobe flood plains combines permanent waterways with drier areas, creating areas filled with unexpected contrasts and diverse wildlife. The Chobe flood plains are in a constant state of flux, expanding and contracting according to the rainy season. While some parts of the Chobe remain permanently flooded, others only experience high water levels from April to July, when rainwater from Zambia flow into the Zambezi and Chobe rivers.

Camp Chobe is located on these plains. The main lodge features ensuite tents built on stilts, with a central dining and bar area overlooking the Chobe river. There is also a campsite 1km away, also facing the river.

This small village, situated 180km north of Francistown, is a popular stop-over destination on the way to or from Maun and Kasane (both ~300km away) further north. The white sand, tall termite mounds and Mokolwane palm trees are a feature of the area around this village.

Due to the number of tourists passing through there are now three filling stations (Engen, Shell and Caltex) close together on the outskirts of Nata at the junction with the Maun road

Shops in Nata are limited with North Gate filling station being the only decent option - there is a Southern Fried Chicken takeaway here as well as a shop selling basic food stuff and cold drinks. The Engen filling station, on the left before the Maun junction, also has a Wimpy fast food restaurant.

Nata is the best place from which to explore the eastern section of the Makgadikgadi Pans. Nata Sanctuary is only 10km away and self-drive trips here can be rewarding at the right time of year with large flocks of Flamingos and Pelicans which breed here each year.

Overnight: Nata Lodge View iBrochureAn oasis set among the Mokolwane palms on the edge of the pans. It is ideally situated close to the entrance to the Nata Sanctuary and is just off the main road, 10 km from Nata village. This is the junction to the Okavango, Chobe and Francistown areas. The Nata River delta feeds the Sua Pan in the Nata sanctuary and forms the breeding ground for a host of water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands, transforming the shore line into a pink haze blending into the western sky. Nata Lodge offers guided tours in open safari vehicles into the sanctuary, not to be missed.

Day 17: Planet Baobab, Gweta (Tue, 25 July)

Known as the gateway to the Makgadikgadi Pans, the tiny old Botswanan village of Gweta is a pleasant place to stay while exploring the vast salt pans. Take a guided walk or quad bike ride through Gweta’s surrounds and discover flint-head spears and other artifacts abandoned by the area’s early Stone Age inhabitants. Experience a barbecue under the star-studded African sky while sipping on traditional, organic sorghum beer or a creamy baobab milkshake. During the rainy season, the Gweta area teems with zebra and wildebeest and these, in turn, attract hungry predators such as lion and cheetah. If a unique and interesting getaway is what you are after, Gweta won’t fail to impress.

Day 18: Planet Baobab, Gweta (Wed, 26 July)

Central Kalahari Game ReserveAdventurous travellers seeking a truly remote African safari will be thrilled to discover that such a thing still exists. As the second largest game reserve in the world and one of the least visited, nothing can prepare you for the sheer wonder of exploring this vast reserve with its wild, untouched beauty. The landscape is dominated by sand veldt, acacias, and Kalahari appleleaf, interspersed with grasslands, and dotted with occasional sand dunes, pans and fossil river valleys. While the reserve is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, there is one animal that is rather obviously absent, the human being. It is this lack of human traffic, combined with the park’s lack of infrastructure, that makes for a challenging and marvelously authentic African experience. Visitors need to be entirely self-sufficient but those willing to make the effort will be richly rewarded.

Day 19: Khama Rhino Sanctuary Chalets, Botswana (Thu, 27 July)

Overnight: Khama Rhino Sanctuary Chalets The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Chalets has 8 chalets to choose from located in different areas. Bedding and towels, braai facilities, a bar fridge and electric kettle will be provided for all chalets. There's a curio shop that sells various local crafts, books, maps, souvenirs and postcards. Wood for fires and braais can be bought here, as well as ice, cold drinks and basic provisions. Visitors can make use of seating, tables, water and braai-stands for their picnic. The restaurant is open to delight day visitors, chalet guests and campers with a variety of tasty traditional dishes as well as delicious regular items. Khama Rhino SanctuaryThe Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is a community-based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhino, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources.

The site was chosen due to its excellent habitat for rhinoceros, central location and proximity to a Botswana Defence Force (BDF) base, which provides the Sanctuary with 24hr protection. Covering approximately 4,300 hectares of Kalahari sandveld, the Sanctuary is centred around Serwe Pan - a large grass-covered depression with several natural water holes. Serwe Pan provides prime habitat for white rhinoceros and other grazing animals, whilst the denser vegetation in the southern area of the Sanctuary is favoured by browsing animals such as giraffe.
