20 5 SEASON
Join us for a unique adventure into the most delightful music ever written.
Melbourne Chamber Orchestra is the heart of chamber music in Australia’s chamber music capital. Bringing together our city’s finest chamber musicians in one ensemble, MCO captivates audiences with its world-class artistry, commitment to excellence and passionate performances.
The orchestra conjures an intimate world of sound unlike any other. Artistic Director William Hennessy meticulously crafts each MCO concert to enchant the ears, touch the heart, and inspire the mind. You’ll hear iconic works by the likes of Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi and Bach, as well as rarely-heard gems and unforgettable miniatures.
Depending on the music, MCO can be a small orchestra, a string consort, a double quartet, or a mini-symphony. In addition to performing as MCO, we perform as Australian Octet, the nation’s only professional string octet, and MCO Virtuosi, a vibrant string consort directed by Lerida Delbridge.
In the city, MCO’s performances can be enjoyed in its two series at the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Deakin Edge, Federation Square. Outside central Melbourne, the orchestra is one of Australia’s leading regional tourers of classical music, presenting concerts and education workshops in every corner of Victoria.

MAGIC. INSPIRATION.
WONDER. MCO.
Shane Chen, violin2
What is genius?
I love Ralph Waldo Emerson’s answer: to know that “what is true for you in your private heart is true for all.”
The genius of Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Tchaikovsky and others is that even today, we’re reminded that we actually have the same feelings that they did, feelings which speak to the universal truths of the human condition. Their music can reveal dimensions in ourselves of which we were previously not aware.
As a musician, one is privileged to be sustained by works of genius everyday, and in shaping this year’s season I want to share with you some of my favourites. I think you will find that the outcome will be an adventure through the many faces and emotions of music: ecstasy, humour, passion, solace, fury and excitement. There will be music you may already love as well as music you’ll wonder why you haven’t befriended earlier.
Great music deserves great interpreters. This year the wonderful musicians of MCO are joined by recordist Genevieve Lacey, Australian String Quartet violinists Ioana Tache and Kristian Winther, pianist Stefan Cassomenos and cellist Michael Dahlenburg. I am also looking forward to performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in concerts which mark my sixtieth birthday.
This might well be MCO’s most enjoyable year yet. I look forward to sharing these moments of genius with you.

Two of Mozart’s finest works paired with breathtaking Czech adagios—sheer heaven.
Nowhere was Mozart’s music appreciated more in his own lifetime than the city of Prague, where his operas Don Giovanni and La clemenza di Tito were premièred. His homage to the city was the Prague Symphony, a masterpiece brimming with his most infectious and elegant orchestral writing.
Laureate of the 2013 International Telekom Beethoven Competition, pianist Stefan Cassomenos has received numerous international accolades for his sensitive and spirited performances. He joins MCO to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 25, the majestic concerto penned alongside the Prague.

A musician of unrivalled finesse and intensity, utterly devoted to her craft, recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey is deservedly one of Australia’s best- loved soloists.
In a sparkling celebration of Baroque recorder music, Genevieve performs with MCO in Bach’s ever-popular Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and two joyful concerti by Telemann and Babell. Interweaving the program are gorgeous Ravel menuets and brilliant music by Handel, including his famous Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.
To top off a program of delights, we have commissioned a new work by Nicholas Buc, whose Rhapsody for All Seasons was rapturously received by audiences in MCO Virtuosi’s 2014 season.

From one of Beethoven’s most sublime creations to Haydn’s incandescent wit, you’re in for a treat.
MCO’s Artistic Director William Hennessy’s stellar career has seen him perform as soloist in over 250 concerto performances around the world. In celebration of his 60th birthday, William performs as the soloist with MCO in Beethoven’s soaring, spiritual and spectacular Violin Concerto.
Get ready for the sheer delight of Il distratto (The Distracted One), the most eccentric of all Haydn’s symphonic creations. With violins stopping to ‘tune’ in the middle of the piece and a stream of musical jests, this is Haydn at his fast- paced, fiercely-imaginative best.

Triple the soloists. Triple the concertos. Triple the magnificence.
MCO brings to life the vivacious spirit of the Baroque in a spectacular kaleidoscope of musical colour crossing five centuries. In a program to take you from the most dazzling highs to the most intimate depths, we feature Bach chorales arranged by great conductors, Scarlatti’s piano sonatas brilliantly reinvented by an English contemporary, and a show-stopping Baroque-style concerto by Finnish composer Olli Mustonen.
Partners in life and on stage as the violins of the Australian String Quartet, Ioana Tache and Kristian Winther are among Australia’s finest soloists. With passion and energy to spare, they join MCO soloists to perform the most wonderful concerti for three violins and orchestra by Vivaldi and Bach.

In 2014, Australian Octet gave audiences their first taste of a new kind of chamber music concert. An ensemble grander than a quartet and more intimate than an orchestra; a concert experience filled with spectacular soloistic writing, symphonic textures, pinpoint precision and high-octane energy.
Australian Octet returns with a dramatic program featuring two of the greatest works of festival chamber music. The iconic work for string sextet, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, is a feast of bravura string playing. Penned during the composer’s summer sojourn in 1890, its unique musical language fuses Russian melody and rhythm with the Western tradition. It is matched with Bruch’s lustrous final masterpiece, the Concerto for Octet, and a new work specially commissioned for Australian Octet by acclaimed Australian composer Paul Stanhope.
