HAZELBURY HEALTH

PRACTICE We offer Homoeopathy and

Kenshin Anma Shiatsu

Kenshin Anma Shiatsu is a wonderfully relaxing and energising form of massage therapy which is very ancient, predating even Shiatsu, and works to rebalance the entire system. Kenshin means ‘essence of health’, and Anma means ‘spreading peace with the hands’. It is performed fully clothed and lasts 75 minutes. Anma is non-diagnostic and is not recommended for pregnant women or cancer patients.

Laurent and Susan Lacroix hold diplomas in Anma from Anma France. Susan is also

a registered homoeopath and counsellor and offers consultations and sessions.

Colerne Coronavirus Community Support Scheme It feels as if I am writing whilst sitting on a moving platform! It is difficult to know how much will have changed by the time you are reading this but two things are certain. Firstly, we live in a lovely caring village. A request on Facebook for volunteers to set up a support scheme for people self-isolating had 60 responses in 24 hours. And secondly, you should have received information through your door about how this scheme will function and how to contact us. We aim to keep it as local as possible with clusters of streets having their own local contact person. A log will be kept by the Parish Council with details of who is volunteering. Help will be for things which don’t require volunteers to enter your home – eg shopping, prescription collection, dog walking, or telephone calls for social chat. The scheme will evolve as we learn so please be patient with us! See www.colerne-pc.gov.uk for virus news updates. Stay safe, and remember viruses hate soap! May Fair – 50th Anniversary This year’s May Fair on Saturday, 9th May is the 50th May Fair event held annually since 1971 when the income was £107.40. The event would have been organised by the then Founding Trustees of the Friends of Colerne Church – John Field, Tom Kent and Arthur Platt. These three gentlemen served together as Trustees for 24 years and their service is noted on a memorial plaque on one of the Lady Chapel chairs in Church. Following the retirement of Arthur and John in 1993, Tom continued for another five years and was joined by David Brierley and Russell Harding as the new team of Trustees. David and Russell served for 20 years as Trustees. Upon the death of Tom, Fiona Hartley joined David and Russell in 1998. Fiona continues to be a Trustee today, together with Lavinia Wilson and Ray Barker. Another key member of the team, Peter Brookes, has just retired as Treasurer. As part of the 50th anniversary Peter, David and Russell have become the first Honorary Life Members of the Friends in recognition of the vast amount of effort (mostly unseen) put into all the Friends activities for the benefit of the community of Colerne by raising money for Church repairs. The theme for this year’s May Fair is naturally – 50 years in memories. Some of us may recall the music of the early 70s – Discos, The Bee Gees, and Punk. The fashion focus was very wide trousers (Loons) and Big Hair. Films included Jaws, Star Wars, Mash and Saturday Night Fever. Children expected presents which included ‘space hoppers’, The Wombles, The Clangers and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. International events included the end of the Vietnam War and the safe return of Apollo 13. For those of us of a certain age we will recall our own personal memories of that era. Irrespective of age we hope that 9th May will bring you memories for the future as you join in as perhaps a spectator or participant in the Chariot race, Classic Car parade, country dancing, face painting, Manor House garden fun, supporting the bar, ice cream and candy floss, or take tea and cake in the Old School Rooms – and await the raffle draw hopefully to get one of the fabulous prizes. Friday, 8th is a new public holiday – so every excuse to stay in Colerne and maybe get visitors to stay with you and visit our great May Fair event – more detail available on page 9 of this Magazine. Kev Billett will once again be our MC and Impresario with Colerne-based ‘Jay Rossiter & The Forever Swing Band’ bringing us melodies redolent of the 50s to celebrate our 50th. The hits of 50 years ago in the 70s will be brought to us by Kev and another Colerne-based band ‘Bryn Johnson & Rocket 88’. Be there or be square!!

As we go to print it has been decided that this event will be CANCELLED. The 50th May Fair will be planned for May 2021.

Reflections Keep Washing Your Hands and Carry On! This seems to be the watchword of the governmental advisers as we go through the various phases of the Coronavirus outbreak. Bearing this in mind, on attending a hospital appointment on Tuesday last, I made use of the bottle of handwash at the receptionists’ desk. The lady who appeared to be the senior of the two receptionists took exception to the amount of handwash I had used. “You have used too much,” she cried, “your hands are dripping handwash all over the floor!” Before I could finish my apology, I was told to sit down (that I should then behave myself was implied but not said,) while the other receptionist mopped up the splashes on the floor. Fortunately, my experience at the hands of a charming and efficient young lady doctor was ample compensation for what had begun so inauspiciously. On getting back home, I watched on the television an expert demonstrating the correct method of washing one’s hands. The procedure took about twice as long as my usual perfunctory wash, so I resolved to be much more thorough in future. The insistence on the need for frequent and thorough hand washing to combat the effects of the virus, caused me to contemplate celebrated instances of the washing of hands. The Bible has some instances of hand washing:

Psalm 26:6 I will wash mine hands in innocency; thus will I compass thine altar, O Lord.

Matthew 27:24 (When Christ was brought before him.) When Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves”.

Water is the cornerstone of rituals of purification by water that has been blessed or declared to be holy, in the Christian church these rituals are known as Baptism or Christening. In Islam purification, or Al-Tahara in Arabic, means purifying oneself by cleaning with water or sand for the purpose of worship or supplication. Islam is a religion that emphasises cleanliness; no one can practise Islam without being clean and pure. Personal cleanliness as a prerequisite of holiness and an aid to physical fitness is central to Jewish tradition. Cleansing with water for physical as well as spiritual purity was commanded in the Old Testament. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the sleepwalking Lady Macbeth’s lamentations illustrate her attempt to avoid culpability for the murder of King Duncan by the washing of blood from her hands:

Yet here’s a spot. Out damned spot! Out, I say!... Yet who would have thought the old man to have so much blood in him? The Thane of Fife had a wife; where is she now? – What, will these hands ne’er be clean?... Here’s the smell of blood still; all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand.

Continued from page 13 Joseph Lister (1827–1912), first Baron Lister, a British surgeon and promoter of antiseptic surgery in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, became known as the ‘father of modern surgery’. It is upon his work that the current insistence on handwashing as a preventive device against the Coronavirus is based. We thus have three reasons for keeping our hands clean. Of these, the Lister based antiseptic case is the most cogent during the current crisis. Bearing this in mind, practising Christians may well conform to the advice given by the Church authority on the taking of Communion in present circumstances. It is to be hoped that no one reading the Parish Magazine has need to cover-up a heinous crime. By the time these Reflections go to press, more will be known about the virus. There will probably be many more people going down with it. Somebody in our village may become infected. Most patients, particularly children, are expected to experience only mild symptoms. It is people like me, old and with ‘underlying chronic medical conditions’ who, if we catch the disease, will be more seriously affected. I hope to deliver my May Reflections, but ‘cheerio’ if I cannot. The government has been adamant that there is no need to stock-pile food and other materials in response to this crisis. Everybody should heed this advice. The well-known advice of Corporal Jones of Dad’s Army: DON’T PANIC! should also be our watchword. John Crittenden

Thanks My family and I would like to thank friends and neighbours for their kind thoughts and messages following the death of Roy. Roy passed away on 9th February and will be greatly missed by us.

Obituary Roy Edward Langridge 1933–2020 Roy was born in Newington Green, North London on 21st June 1933. He was the eldest of three children and lived with his family in Tottenham. He won a scholarship to the Tottenham Grammar School for Boys and remained there until the age of 16. He then took up a position in the Royal Bank of India. Aged 18, Roy had to complete his National Service and enlisted in the Royal Marines serving in Egypt and Cyprus. After completing his service he returned to the bank for a short while and then joined Associated Newspapers as a sales rep. Roy met Gill at the beginning of 1958 and they married in September of the same year. He joined his first advertising agency in 1961 and from there his career took off. He became media director to various London agencies, J Walter Thompson being the most well known. During these years, Fiona and Joanne were born and the family moved from Broxbourne to Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. At the age of 55 Roy had semi-retired, and Gill and Roy moved to Colerne, joining in village life. Roy took on the challenge of walking from Bristol Cathedral to Colerne with other members of the village to raise funds for the Church. He also became the first quiz master for many of the Women’s Institute quizzes. In 1991 Roy joined North Wilts Golf Club where Gill was already a member. What a challenge that was; he couldn’t come to terms with the fact that the little white ball didn’t go where he intended it to! Roy was appointed Club Captain in 2004 and Club President in 2016. In 1998 Roy became a grandfather for the first time when Amy was born, and then in 2003 he welcomed his grandson Nicholas. For a man who moved incredibly fast and was never still it came as a great shock when Roy was diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2019. Roy was outgoing and friendly to all who met him and will be remembered as the man who hurried along the High Street to get his newspaper every morning. Roy passed away at home on 9th February, surrounded by his family. I and my family would like to thank all our friends and neighbours for their kind thoughts and messages. Gill Langridge

Unbelievable but true Recently, I went to McDonald's and I saw on the menu that you could have a choice of six, nine or 12 Chicken McNuggets. I asked for half a dozen nuggets. "We don't have half a dozen nuggets", said the teenager at the counter. "You don't?" I replied. "We have only six, nine or 12", was the reply. "So, I can't order half a dozen nuggets, but I can order six?" "That's right". I shook my head and ordered six McNuggets.

Abbotscombe Wood is approximately 4.1hectares (10.2 acres) situated in the west of the Parish, within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a north-facing and steeply-sloping site, well-drained and limestone is near the surface. DEFRA has it recorded as Ancient and Semi-Natural Woodland and on the Priority Habitat Inventory. Although the wood is well stocked with a high canopy of trees, mainly beech, sycamore and ash, there is a newly planted area of mixed species. Some have done well; others have struggled in the wet conditions. It is estimated that 100 trees need replacing. Also, many tree shelters need firming up by banging in the stakes further or adding new stakes. Due to the wet conditions it is recommended that oak and hornbeam should be used as larger trees, alder as intermediate sized trees and hazel and guelder rose (also called water elder) as shrub species.

The first meeting was well attended on 29th February and, following a presentation, there was a discussion with thoughts and ideas of how to move forward. It was agreed that it would be a good idea to achieve something tangible this season. Suggested sites were John’s Walk, the southern and northern edges of the Recreation Ground and the wide verges at the Bath Road entrance to the village. We started at John’s Walk. The first job was brush cutting, and then on Saturday, 14th March a jolly band of volunteers got clearing and raking. A meeting has been arranged with a local wildflower specialist to come to the Parish and advise us how to best proceed.

Wiltshire Council has been busy replacing the old orange sodium lights with more energy efficient LED fittings. Although they may appear brighter, they are directed downwards thereby creating less light pollution.

On 3rd March the Parish Council considered planning application Ref: 20/00351/LBC for Listed Building Consent. The proposal is a retrospective application for various alterations; two cottages combined into one dwelling, alteration to front mullion windows, rear wooden rain porch and plastering of lower ground floor ceilings, at 2 Tutton Hill. The application was supported. Notification was received that planning consent had been refused in relation to application 19/07988/FUL which relates to the proposed conversion of The Barn at Sydney Farm, Bath Road to a dwelling with associated works.

We have had the gully tanker visit the Parish again – an ongoing exercise. The past season has meant that many drains and gullies have been blocked with silt, so any work is welcome. Also, Mark, our Parish Steward, has been constantly filling potholes throughout North Wiltshire, so if you do see any please use the ‘My Wiltshire’ App to report them.

The Parish Council invites tenders for the painting and making good of the external doors and sills of the public toilets, the Old School and the storerooms in the Old School playground. Work on the playgroup and playground doors is to be carried out during playgroup holidays. The tender is to be fixed price for labour and other costs with paint purchased by the Council. Please return your tender by 29th March to [email protected]

Grounds for Optimism – Chapter XXXIII University of Kisubi, Entebbe, Uganda, later on Thursday, 9th February 2017

Official Graduation Day events were over. Beaming graduates were being photographed with their proud families. I headed towards the brothers’ refectory to seek a late afternoon snack when Brother Emmanuel bade me turn around and join him upstairs at top table for ‘The Feast’. I feared being thought a gate-crasher but embarrassment was dispelled when I saw the marching band boys already tucking in. A ‘Tusker lite’ lager – same label, bottle and flavour as 50 years ago, albeit Americanised spelling – made me welcome among the dignitaries. I called at the chapel to give thanks for three astonishing weeks and many potential disasters avoided, and then spent a moment in the brothers’ graveyard beside the concrete crosses for Cosmas and Aloysius, Ugandan friends from Tanzanian days, unseen but not forgotten. By now the young persons’ music was belting out and I was glad of Turkish Airlines ear plugs hoping to snatch a few hours shut-eye before a small hours flight back to London. But then back in the refectory I fell into conversation with senior academic Carol Sandbrink from UNIK’s ‘mother’ institution in Ohio, USA, and spent time recalling East Africa in the 60s and 70s. (Carol also gave me much interesting background on the brothers’ teaching order, founded by a French catholic monk in north Africa in 1819). We agreed that we could not understand the ‘never go back’ philosophy, perhaps caused by nostalgia and fear of change. Suddenly Carol asked where Brother Dennis was. Had I made definite arrangements with him to go to the airport? I had asked to visit an ATM to draw Ugandan shillings to pay for board and lodging but, far more important, it was now late and I must not miss that flight. Not finding Dennis, I persuaded Emmanuel to rescue me. We drove 20km through the night past shiny new hotels, casinos and night clubs to the ramp up to ‘Departures’ and a promise to meet again next year. In the waiting lobby with plenty of time, of course – “if you’ve time to spare, go by air!” – I met an Alabaman called Rodney (not another!?) who had just taken a month off from his ‘road striping’ business painting parking bays to plant evangelical ‘Bridge to Hope’ churches in Lira, N Uganda. He told me of their partner, a 29-year-old Ugandan entrepreneur, who has just financed a school for orphans out of his own pocket and plans two more. On the flight to Istanbul hub airport I sat next to the Californian pastor of the Alabamans and was told Darwin’s theory of evolution is a falsehood. We photographed Turkish snow-capped mountains through the porthole and I vainly told him of my hero Charles, geologist before he was a biologist, meticulous experiments with earthworms and insectivorous plants still lovingly preserved at his family home of Down House in Croydon. At Ataturk International I sought gate 227A. With only 1½ hours in transit I flagged down a motorised wheelchair and driver because my arthritic hip, waiting for its prosthesis, was by now playing up. We sped past ‘Delight’ vendors for the cash and time-rich and arrived in time for the last airborne leg back to LHR. Carousel confusion caused a bit more delay but speedy National Express driver ‘Jaysoos’ (Jesus) was as trustworthy as his name sake, delivering me at Box into the arms of my beloved. She whisked me home for the only dish I had missed in three weeks – cheddar cheese salad.

At Colerne C of E Primary, internet safety underpins all our digital learning across the curriculum and children are taught throughout the year about how to stay safe online. On Tuesday, 11th February, we explored this in more detail by celebrating the global Safer Internet Day. The theme of the day was working together for a better internet with a particular focus on how young people explore and express their identity online. Classes read internet safety books, watched videos, created their own avatars and had plenty of discussions about keeping safe both in school and at home. We also had a visit from a member of the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust who worked with classes to provide details and techniques on how to maintain a healthy well-being. Information and websites were also shared with children and parents to support them in keeping their child safe online at home.

Were you fooled? The question in the title refers to 1st April, known as April Fool’s Day. The origins of the day devoted to tricking others are disputed and there are many different versions each supposedly the definitive answer. Among them are some lines from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and a French origin, the French call the day ‘Poisson d’Avril’ (April fish). I have tried an April fool trick only once when I was about eight or nine years old and I served my parents a cup of cold tea in bed. They were definitely not amused and I’ve never tried to trick anyone since. One of the best April fool tricks was played by the BBC on television in 1957. Those of you old enough might remember the Spaghetti tree. It all happened on the Panorama programme which was hosted by a very distinguished broadcaster, Richard Dimbleby, father of David and Jonathan, and that fact that Dimbleby senior was so well respected made the hoax all the more believable. He reported on a family from Ticino in Switzerland carrying out their annual Spaghetti harvest. The film of the harvest showed strands of spaghetti being carefully plucked from a tree and laid out in the sun to dry. Mr Dimbleby told viewers that the end of March is an anxious time for spaghetti harvesters as severe late frost can impair the flavour of the spaghetti. At the time, pasta of any type was not widely eaten in the UK, and the item was broadcast in a perfectly serious tone. Many people were fooled including the then Director General of the BBC, the item being kept a closely guarded secret within the production team of Panorama. But, LINK clients, there’s no need to be concerned if you asked to be transported on 1st April, we won’t be playing April fool tricks on anyone, you won’t be arriving somewhere you didn’t expect and we will arrive to pick you up at the time we told you. Our reputation as a ‘Good Neighbour’ service is too precious for us to risk it.

Tuesday Tramp Ramblings I have never known such prolonged wet weather conditions that disrupted the March Tramp planning. I give full credit and thanks to Dave, Sid and Rob for their last-minute re-routing to avoid the very challenging conditions under foot. My idea basing each Tramp on a theme is shelved until conditions improve. We had a good Tramp attendance of 32 including new faces and it was enjoyed by all. The Wardens have again been busy in the Parish with work parties currently working on a tree-planting programme in the following areas:

Oaks Farm (Brokenborough Wood and Bobs Plantation) Northwood Farm – Hedgeline adjacent to COLE4 Watergates adjacent to COLE27

My fellow Warden, Dave Wright, reports on the programme: Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world’s wildlife. They also provide us with the materials for tools and shelter. The canopies of trees act as a physical filter, trapping dust and absorbing pollutants from the air. Each individual tree removes up to 1.7 kilos every year. Trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow and the carbon that they store in their wood helps slow the rate of global warming. They also provide shade from solar radiation and reduce noise. Trees host complex microhabitats. When young, they provide habitation and food for amazing communities of birds, insects, lichen and fungi. When ancient, their trunks also provide the hollow cover needed by species such as bats, wood boring beetles, tawny owls and woodpeckers. Research shows that within minutes of being surrounded by trees and green space, your blood pressure drops, your heart rate reduces and your stress levels come down. The Cotswold Wardens have been working with local Land Owners in support of an ambitious plan to plant a wide variety of trees to replace ash trees which are threatened by ash tree dieback. The trees are provided by the Cotswold Conservation Board and have been planted by the Cotswold Wardens. The project has planted 300 trees in the Parish of Colerne and each Woodland site will be managed in accordance with a comprehensive Woodland management plan devised by Richard Wilson (Chairman of the Avon Valley District of the Cotswold Wardens). Our next Tramp will be on 7th April, starting and finishing at the Fox commencing at 10.00am. A free copy of the Colerne Heritage Trail map is available from the Post Office. The CMT team had great fun during its last panto, Aladdino. All of us hope the village enjoyed watching us as much as we enjoyed entertaining them. Every year during rehearsals we wonder what the live performances will be like – will we remember all the songs? What about the costume changes? What if we burst out laughing when we shouldn't? It always works out just fine though. We're so excited now about this year's show, Scrooge. We know we'll all have really good fun with it. We meet up for the first time this year on Friday, 1st May for a sing through. It's always a lovely occasion to get back together again as a group. After the first week of singing, during further weeks we'll read through the script as well as trying out some of the songs. Last year we welcomed some new members to the group: Greg and Ally, and of course our fabulous younger members, Daisy, Millie and Rowan. We don’t think we scared them away and we hope to see them again this year. Why don't you come along too, you’d be very welcome. We always have room for new people to join in and we’d love to see more of you. We meet on Fridays and, nearer to show time, we also meet on some Thursdays. If you’d like to give it a try, why not come along on any Friday and see for yourself what we do. There’s no pressure to join if it’s not for you. Auditions for principal roles this year will be on Friday, 29th May. We don’t audition for the chorus roles because we all tend to be involved in those, so no pressure there! We hope you’ll come along but, if you don’t fancy the stage, we hope to see you in the audience – or why not help us out ‘front of house’ – there really is something for everyone!

Charity for the Month We are supporting one of our regular Charities – USPG – a charity which has been in partnership with churches around the world since it was founded in 1701. For example, USPG is working with the

Anglican Church in Malawi to reach out to sustain life and conserve livelihoods through simple technology. Malawi is one of the countries in the world most challenged by the effects of climate change. A display can be found at the back of church and the Charity stall at the next Saturday Market will be in aid of this. Margaret Edmonds
