Reading at Ark Brunel

At Ark Brunel we want to foster a lifelong love and appreciation for reading in all children. We celebrate pupils and classes who read regularly as we know that a love of reading develops children into inquisitive, informed and reflective individuals who can engage effectively with the world around them. As well as reading at school we expect all children to read out loud for at least 20 minutes per night with an adult.

Questions to ask your childBefore reading the book:

• What do you think this story will be about? What might happen in the story?

During the reading of the book:• What has happened so far?• What might happen next? Why do you think that? What clue has the author given you to make you think that?•How do you think the story might end?• What sort of character is….? Is he/she friendly/ mean/ nice…?• Can you find me the word that means?

After reading the book:• Did you enjoy the book? Why?•What was your favourite part? Why?• What was the most interesting/ exciting part of the book? Can you find it?• What sort of character was….?• Why did that character do … (give a situation/ event from the story)?• What happened in the story? Can you retell the story in your own words?• What were the main the events that happened in the story?• Who were the main characters in the story?

Queen’s Park and Kensal Libraries are close to our school and offer a wide range of exciting children’s books. They also have some lovely reading activities for children to join in.
