The Father of Medicine and a medical practitioner, Hippocrates (400 BC to 377 BC), regarded food as a primary form of medicine more that 2,500 years ago.

Jethro Kloss (1863-1946)was a leading pioneer who helped shape this industry as we know it today. His magnum opus, Back to Eden (1939), sold over 3 million copies and went on to become a bible to many health food nuts in the early years of the natural food industry.

These incredible doctors, nutritionists and scientists are only a handful of pioneers who helped lay the foundation for our thriving natural product business today.

Linus Carl Pauling PhD (1901-1994)was a great scientist, humanitarian and a much respected defender of civil liberties and health issues. He is the only person ever to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes—Chemistry (1954), Peace (1962). He wrote numerous books including: Vitamin C and the Common Cold, Cancer and Vitamin C, How to Live Longer and Feel Better. In the mid-80’s Linus Pauling was a speaker at a CHFA Convention in Vancouver BC.

Adelle Davis (1904 -1974) was a visionary and pioneer of the nutritional revolution. She was celebrated as The First Lady of Nutrition, and her writings are the foundations of natural health today.In the 60’s and 70’s, there was no health food store who did not carry her best-selling books.

Wilfred Shute MD (1907-1982) Evan Shute MD (1905 -1978)the great Canadian medical doctors, revolutionized cardiology when they first introduced mega dose therapy using D-alpha tocopherol. They would go on to successfully treat over 30,000 patients using this therapy. They were the founders of the Shute Institute, in London, Ontario, which remains in operation today.

Carlton Fredericks PhD (1910-1987)

became famous for his pioneering use of the media to educate people about nutrition therapy. For thirty years at New York Radio Station WOR, Fredericks’ broadcasts were syndicated nationally resulting in millions of letters to a man whom many considered to be America’s Foremost Nutritionist. Fredericks appeared on the Merv Griffith Show, and was a columnist for Prevention and Let’s Live magazines. He wrote over twenty books, lectured widely and was associate professor of Public Health at Farleigh Dickenson University.

Abram Hoffer PhD, MD (1917- 2009)a great Canadian pioneer of orthomolecular psychiatry and medicine. He authored many books and was the founder and editor of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. He was instrumental in the discovery that mega doses of vitamin B3 were therapeutic for schizophrenia. Since 1967 Dr. Hoffer worked in his private practice helping and healing thousands of patients who, it was clear to him, were not getting well with the use of tranquilizers. Dr. Hoffer was inducted into the CHFA Hall of Fame in 1998.

CE Jamieson & Co.Toronto, ONFounded by Claire Edwin Jamieson in 1922, Jamieson Laboratories has been recognized as one of Canada’s leading manufacturers of natural health products. In the mid 1960’s, the Margolis family purchased the company from Mr. Jamieson, and to this day is still a privately-held company. Manufactured in Windsor, Ontario, Jamieson is sold worldwide and is Canada’s oldest and largest brand of natural health products.

Vita Health, Winnipeg, MNVita Health began in 1936 as a small mail-order company selling herbs and patent medicines. Under Vita Health’s founder GW Seier, the mail-order business grew throughout the 50’s-60’s, resulting in the opening of the first store in Winnipeg. John Holtmann, GW Seier’s son in law, purchased the Vita Health stores in 1998. Carrying forward into the third generation, John’s son Mathew works in the business as Corporate Grocery Manager. Since 2007, Vita Health has opened four Fresh Market stores with full-service organic groceries, supplements, herbs, natural beauty and green household products. The Vita Health chain now totals seven stores in Manitoba.

Mr. Wong is a licensed member of the Quebec Pharmacist Association. Burlington Health Foods (BHF), Burlington, ONIn 1970, Marnie Gall, a young mother of four children, tried unsuccessfully to persuade several friends to open a health food store in Burlington, Ontario. With no takers, she decided she would have to do it herself. Bill Gall, son of the original owner Marnie Gall, helped at the store part time when he was going to University. Bill went on to follow another career path, but eventually took over the ownership of the store in 1988. BHF has an extensive offer of natural health products, personal and skin care and cosmetic products. BHF has undertaken many remodeling projects to assure their customers of a memorable shopping experience and to keep them coming back.

The Big Carrot, Toronto, ONThe Big Carrot Natural Food Market opened in 1983, the first member-owned natural food co-op in Canada.The inspiration for the Big Carrot to be a co-op came when the founders saw a BBC documentary on the famous Mondragon Co-op in Spain, and they were attracted to the democratic power-sharing arrangement. One Member, One Vote. The Big Carrot developed the concept of the Carrot Common in 1987 with developer David Walsh. In 1998 The Big Carrot launched a new website, and in 2001 they became a founding member of the Non-GMO Project. The Big Carrot celebrated it’s 25th anniversary in 2008, and now has 65 worker members, 100 support staff, and 18,000 square ft of space in the Carrot Common.

LifeStream Natural Food Store, Vancouver, BCLifeStream Natural Food Store opened in January 1971 in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver, British Columbia. Founded by Arran Stephens, it was Canada’s first large natural foods store with a bustling natural restaurant in the back. The LifeStream store began repackaging bulk goods and creating products under its own brand name. These products were soon a leading brand name sold throughout Canada and exported to the United States.

1964 The CHFA is founded, registered as the Canadian Health Food Dealers Association (CHFDA).

1966 CHFDA President Sloan Alma Smith goes to Ottawa to fight new proposed legislation for vitamins and minerals, to be used only on the advise of a physician. Dr. Alex Campbell, Director General with Health Canada, eventually withdrew the proposed new regulations.

1975 Launch of 20,000 Alive, journal of health and nutrition. The magazine was originally designed to be the official communication tool of the CHFDA. Later, the Board of Directors of the Association gave the magazine back to the creator, Siegfried Gursche.

1977 the CHFDA became the Canadian Health Food Association. (CHFA)

1989 the Association celebrated its 25th Anniversary by creating two conventions a year, one spring and one fall, alternating between Vancouver and Toronto.

1991 CHFA moves it’s head office to Markham, ON into space offered by it’s President Willie Pelzer, as he generously financially assisted the Association back to health.

1997 The CHFA membership elects Donna Herringer as its first female president.

1998 Three CHFA members were appointed by Health Minister Alan Rock to sit on the Transition Team of the Office of Natural Health Products to recommend an appropriate framework for regulation.

1999 CHFA membership changes bylaws allowing the Board of Directors to hire Donna Herringer as their first paid president.

2003 Health Canada announces the acceptance of the Standing Committee on Health’s recommendations on natural health product regulation.

2004 CHFA’s 40th Anniversary year. The NHP regulations come into force.

2005 CHFA led a successful lobbying campaign against amending the definitions of food and drug under Bill C-420. The Standing Committee on Health recommended that the House of Commons not proceed with Bill C-420, an act to amend the Food & Drugs Act. CHFA hired Ottawa-based lobby firm, Impact Public Affairs, to continue to position itself as the leading voice of the natural health and organic products industry to parliamentarians, at both the provincial and federal levels.

2008 CHFA’s Board of Directors accepted the recommendations of the Legislative Task Force including that NHPs be legislated separate from drugs, not as a subset of drugs.

2010 CHFA was a key driver and supporter of the Unprocessed Product License Applications Regulations (UPLAR), which was published in Canada Gazette Part II and is in full force since August, 2010.
