Winston knew Syme would be vaporized because he was too intelligent. He worked on the Newspeak dictionary, and understood too much about the purpose of Newspeak.

Who is comrade Oglivy, and what does he show us about what Oceanic society values?

He is a fake person invented by Winston to correct a speech made by Big Brother. He shows that Oceanic society values militarism, physicality over intellectualism, and sacrifice for the Party.

These are the three superstates in 1984 and the territory they occupy, as well as the city and country where Winston lives.

What are Oceania, which occupies the British Isles, the Americas, Southern Africa, and Australia; Eurasia, which occupies continental Europe and the Eurasian landmass; and Eastasia, which occupies eastern and southeastern Asia. Winston lives in London, Airstrip One, Oceania.

What is “The Golden Country”?

This is the name of Winston’s apartment complex, and how it demonstrates a characteristic of Dystopian society.

What are Victory Mansions? This demonstrates an illusion of a perfect society, which is a characteristic of Dystopia: while the name is victorious, in reality, the apartments are old and falling apart.
