Minute Math by Betsy Weigle

Fluency with math facts is an important foundation for students to build upon to

achieve higher levels of math ability. We don’t want students to struggle with basic

facts as they are trying to learn how to manipulate larger numbers in complex

situations.

Minute Math is a quick way for students to practice and master basic facts - and it truly

takes minutes to do! Minute Math is an individualized approach to math fact mastery.

All students start at the same level and move up as they show mastery of the facts.

Kids do love a challenge! Harness that spirit to help them learn automatic recall of

basic facts so they can zoom ahead.

What’s Included

At the end of these instructions, you’ll find scoring sheets for each mathematical

operation.

Separately, you’ll find documents for each basic mathematical operation (addition,

subtraction, multiplication, division).

Prep Instructions

Start with the addition challenges. Make copies of the masters and cut them apart

vertically into strips.

You’ll need more than one strip for each student… in other words, it will take

more than one try for most students to master each challenge.

Sort the addition Minute Math strips into a shoebox-sized container with labeled

dividers.

So you’ll have dividers labeled:

+0 +4 +7 +10

+1 +5 +8

+2 +6 +9

+3 +4, 5, 6 +7, 8, 9

+0, 1, 2, 3

Now, do the same thing with the subtraction strips. You may want to put them into a

separate container.

You’ll have to decide how many operations to cover for your grade level. Cut out and

store the multiplication and division strips as desired.

Note: This is a year-long activity; keep challenging your students! However, no matter

what grade level they are in, I recommend starting with addition to ensure they have

ALL the basic operations mastered.

Implementation Instructions

Place each student’s Minute Math strip face down on their desk. I prep this in

advance and have a helper hand them out.

You can also put them out while the kids are away at recess or a specialist.

Give students one or two minutes to complete the strip. This depends on your group of

little people… we want them to be successful and not frustrated. However, we are

looking for automaticity or fluency with math facts, so no more than 2 minutes for 21

problems.

Have a helper collect all the strips

Correct Minute Math using the answer keys that are included at the end of each

operation (i.e. the math answer key is at the end of the sheets of math strips).

Correcting takes mere minutes – use a volunteer!

Progression

Students move to the next strip if they make zero mistakes or one mistake on their

current strip. A score of 20 or better out of 21 gets them a check mark on your tracking

sheet (below) and moves them up.

Track student progress on the attached tracking sheet so you know which students

may need support and you know which strip students are working on.

Notes

You can have students grab their own strip out of the bin – assuming students

can track the strip they are on.

Addition and subtraction Minute Math strips have two opportunities for students

to show they have mastered each fact. Multiplication has math facts two ways

(3 x 2 and 2 x 3) to prove mastery. Division has two opportunities for most facts.

I have had a cheating issue or two. I set clear expectations for cheating and tell

my students that if I see cheating, I will simply toss their strip and they can try

again more honestly the next day. I do this privately so as not to embarrass the

student. I also make sure the student gets individualized support if they need it.

This activity is meant to be personally challenging, not competitive!

Common Core Standards Addressed by Minute Math!

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.C.4

Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and

adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings

and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship

between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and

explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds

tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.C.5

Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without

having to count; explain the reasoning used.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.C.6

Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range 10-90

(positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawings and strategies based

on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition

and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning

used.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.5

Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties

of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.6

Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and

properties of operations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.7

Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies

based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between

addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in

adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and

hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or

decompose tens or hundreds.

from a given number 100-900.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NBT.A.2

Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place

value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and

subtraction.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NBT.A.3

Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 ×

60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.4

Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.5

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply

two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of

operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular
