Is America's love affair with the automobilecoming to an end? Perhaps not. But thereare rumblings of discontent that shouldn't beheard in a land of happy motorists. People arebecoming fed up with the quality of the newcars they're buying. What used to be a pleasur-able experience ... looking forward to thepurchase of a new car ... has now, for manybecome a nightmare. They're convinced thatthey won't get their money's worth.

One owner group, however, finds it easier tosmile than frown. They drive Volvos. And re-cent statistics show that 9 out of 10 people whobought new Volvos are happy with their cars.

In five specific areas, they're especially happywith their Volvos.

1. The overall quality of workmanship-From something as apparent as the paint joband the fit of the doors to a small detail likethe precise fit of the carpeting.

Volvos are so well made that their life expec-tancy in Sweden is now up to an average 17.5years, the longest in the country.

We don't expect you to hold on to your newVolvo for anywhere near that long. However, the fact that Volvos go downhill slower than

2. Interior roominess and comfort-Outsiders may think that Volvo is a small-ishcar. Insiders know better.

3. Maneuverability-Volvo owners give high marks to its perfor-mance in city traffic and the ease with which itparked and steered.

4. Safety-Volvo owners drive with a sense of well-beingthat derives from two sources. They've heardit's built to be one of the most crashworthycars on the road. And they know from experi-ence that it handles predictably; they can usuallysteer clear of trouble in the first place.

5. Value for the money-Volvo owners believe their car is worth what theypaid for it. In this day and age, that makesthem exceptional. To say nothing of the car.

RESPECT OLD AGE. IT'S WORTH MONEY TO YOU.many other cars suggests that when it comestime for you to sell ... your Volvo should bein better shape than the model you were smartenough to pass up.

And, accordingly, it should return you ahigher percentage of the purchase price.

IT'S EASY TO DECIDE ON A VOLVO. BUT WHICH ONE?This year, Volvo offers you five different

classes of cars. From our basic DL series to ourGLE luxury class. There's also the GL withsome of the best features of both. A GT perfor-

mance sedan. And a luxury-class touring car.Which one lights up your eyes is a matter of

individual taste. But of this you can be sure: theone you choose was built to make you happy.

We've spent millions on the interior of ourcars, applying the science of ergonomics, a $2word that means making man's use of machin-ery more efficient and more comfortable.

We've built our car so that you-the driver-fit into it as if you'd been designed for the part. The result is that you should become a better, safer driver. Because you'll be sitting in theoptimum driving position to react faster. To seemore of the road. And you'll be faced with thefewest possible distractions.

Once you're comfortably and correctlyseated with a three-point safety belt tucking youin, look around. In a Volvo, you can see almostcompletely around the car. That's because eachfront roof pillar is no wider than the distancebetween your eyes. So you look around them, not through them. (But they're strong. Eachone can support the weight of the car.) Thenwe give you three rear-view mirrors instead ofthe usual one. A special defogger for the frontside windows. A defroster/defogger on the rearwindow. Plus, on the wagons, a rear windshieldwiper /washer.

Now that you've looked around, it's time tomove. You'll find all the controls within easyreach. In fact, you can operate your windshieldwipers, turn signals and headlight dimmerwithout taking your hands off the wheel. A flickof your finger does the trick. You don't evenhave to reach outside to adjust your side mirrors. They're controlled manually or electricallyfrom inside, depending on the model you select.

We've tried to take the busy work out ofdriving so you can concentrate on the jobat hand. We've also worked hard to relieve theheadaches. Tinted glass with a darker tint bandat the top of the windshield is standard. Thepadded dash is covered with a non-reflectiveback matte finish. And while the interior rear-view mirror has the usual day/night adjust-ment, the outside mirrors are special. They'reoptically tuned to automatically filter headlightbeams at night.

And those are just some of the steps we'vetaken to make you a more efficient, saferdriver. The next steps are up to you. To walkback into your Volvo dealer's showroom.

LIMITED VISABILITY CAN BE A SERIOUSDISTRACTION. VOLVOS HAVE APPROX-IMATELY 90% ALL-AROUND VISIBILITYFROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT.

The inside of a Volvo is roomy enough tocomfortably seat 95% of America's adultpopulation .. , up to five at a time. Behind thisastounding statistic are Volvo's unique frontbucket seats.

Chances are overwhelming that, regardlessof your height or body proportions, you shouldbe able to select three positions on our nine-way adjustable bucket seat that will do thefollowing: 1) Drop your right foot naturallyand comfortably onto the accelerator andbrake pedals. 2) With your arms extendedforward, "bend" your wrists at the top of thesteering wheel. 3) Put your eyes at a level abovethe top of the wheel. That's the seating stancefavored by professional drivers. And in a Volvo, you get a bonus: from that position, your leftfoot falls on a footrest that's on the same planeas your right foot. This reduces muscletension-but also produces an even more stabledriving position.

Volvo seats raise up to make short peopletaller. They glide backward to give long legsstretching room. They recline to make sleepy-heads sleepier. And an adjustable lumbarsupport in each backrest provides firm pressureagainst the small of the back, your Achilles'heel on long trips.

The seat was the product of a collaborationbetween Volvo engineers and orthopedic sur-geons. The doctors knew what ailed people onlong trips. Volvo helped supply the cure.

As for the back seat, let's put it this way:

THE BACKREST OF A VOLVO SEATIS INFINITELY VARIABLE ATANY ANGLE BETWEEN 90° AND170°. WHEN FULLY RECLINED,THERE IS NO RIDGE BETWEENBACKREST AND SEAT CUSHION.

Volvo sedans have operated for years as high-speed limousines on the highways of Europe. If the back seats weren't comfortable, thechauffeurs up front would have heard about it.

Volvo seats are covered with a variety ofmaterials. Fabrics that breathe, vinyl that wipesclean, plush velour and genuine leather. Askyour Volvo dealer what materials go withwhich models.

Interior comfort is also a matter of keepingwarm when it's cold and vice versa. So everyVolvo model has a 12-outlet fresh air ven-tilation system that also distributes heated airthroughout the car in winter. The air condi-tioner (standard on some models) also coolsthrough the same 12 outlets.

So any adult who doesn't find comfort ina Volvo is part of either a very small (or a verylarge) minority of 5 % .

Four out of five Volvo owners were testdrivers before they bought their cars. Theydidn't take our word for how a Volvo handledand performed.

While Volvo is built to take punishment(passive safety), it's also designed to stay out oftrouble in the first place (active safety). And it'sthis active safety that can best be understoodwhen the car is in motion and you're behindthe wheel.

You won't be driving at breakneck speeds ormaking panic stops. Common sense, the localpolice and your insurance company are allagainst that kind of test drive. You'll drivenormally and from that experience you'll learnsomething. Because a Volvo is designed tobehave in panic situations exactly as it doesunder normal conditions.

We've studied thousands of average driversand found that when speed is higher thannormal, when a curve is sharper than expectedor the road surface more slippery than usual, the average driver reacts as he would at aslower speed, on a gradual curve, on a drypavement. And he expects his car to behave asit would under those normal conditions. Manycars that are perfectly manageable undernormal conditions become erratic and unpre-dictable in moments of stress.

Volvo, we're proud to say, is designed andengineered for the average driver.

We have chosen rack-and-pinion steering, recognized by most automotive authorities asthe most precise system anywhere.

Volvo installs a power-assisted disc brake onevery wheel. (There's less heat build-up indiscs so they tend to resist brake "fade" better

VENTILATED DISC BRAKES HAVEGREATER COOLING CAPACITY.

than drum brakes.) Unlike any other car soldin America, we attach three wheels to eachcircuit ... not just two.

Of course, there are other elements to goodhandling than predictable steering and braking.

Road holding is one of them. And it hasfour functions. l) Distribution of weight. Thecloser a car can come to an ideal 50-50 weightdistribution front and rear, the more predict-ably it will handle. The DL sedans have a51-49 ratio with driver. 2) Roll stiffness. Volvosare built with strong stabilizers front and rearto counter that "dipping" or roll tendencywhen cornering. 3) Torsional stiffness. TheVolvo body is built to be rigid from front toback. The reason: when flex or elasticity isreduced, wheel angles remain more constant.4) Wheel suspension. Our front two wheels areindependently suspended by McPherson strutsfor precise steering control. In back, we use a"live" rear axle rather than an independentsuspension because our design assures a cons-tant wheel-to-wheel track as well as constanttoe-in, caster and camber angles of the wheels.

A few words about passive safety ... or whatwe've done in case you can't avoid an accident.

There's a steel "cage" beneath the outer shellthat surrounds the passengers on every side.Front and rear crumple zones ... areasdesigned to give themselves up in the event of acrash so that impact to the "cage" is minimized. And a collapsible, break-away steering column.

When the thought sinks in that a Volvois designed to get you from here to there in onepiece, you can begin to regard driving yourVolvo as the pleasure it is. Because you haveconfidence in your car.

RACK AND PINION STEERING IS CONSID-ERED BY MOST EXPERTS TO BE THEMOST PRECISE SYSTEM AVAILABLE.

THE FRONT SUSPENSION INCLUDESMCPHERSON STRUTS WHICH INCORPO-RATE COIL SPRINGS AND SHOCKS.

If you're looking for a cheap car, you canfind them by the dozen. At prices that areanything but cheap.

But if you want a car with all the quality, comfort, safety and performance of a Volvo-at the lowest possible prices-then one of ourtwo-door or four-door DL sedans is whatyou're looking for.

These cars are for families with better thingsto spend their money on than a new car every36 months. Like all Volvos, they're built to last,Thousands of spot welds (each one strongenough to support the weight of the car) fusethe body panels into one solid chunk of steel.Evidence of this solidity comes from Volvoowners who report a noticeable absence of rat-tles and squeaks. Six steel pillars support theroof. They're strong enough to hold up sixVolvo sedans stacked one on top of the other.Sothat the roof we put over your head is designedto stay over your head. (Turn that over inyour mind.)

Even the strongest steel, however, has anenemy. Rust and corrosion. So Volvos are builtwith this threat ever in mind. Since rust usuallystarts inside a car and works its way out, ourrust-proofing starts in areas you'll never see.For example: areas particularly susceptible to

CASCADE WHITE TWO-DOOR DL SEDAN.

corrosion are made of hot-dipped galvanizedsteel. And special rust-preventive fluids areinjected into nearly 50 body sections.

Only then is a Volvo body ready for the paint-ing process. Not just outside but inside as well.

First, the body is sprayed with zinc phos-phate. It cleans and etches the metal and makesthe paint adhere more tightly. Then the body iscompletely submerged in a bath of primer thatcovers every surface. Next comes a specialabrasive resistant coat for the bottom rails andthe floor bottom. And for the lower half of thebody, a paint that accepts the chipping ofstones without passing it on to the primer. Next,a surface coat is applied both outside and in.Many other manufacturers ignore the insidewhen applying this coat. Just as many of themalso ignore a sealer coat that we apply next. Finally, the body is ready for the top coat, theenamel or metallic you've selected. In all, everyVolvo gets two coats of paint inside, four coatsoutside above the waistline. And five below.

Standard equipment on both DL sedans in-cludes a responsive, overhead cam, 107 hp, fuel-injected engine with Lambda Sond® emissioncontrol, a four-speed manual transmission andour four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes. You can also add overdrive or substitute a three-speed automatic transmission as an option. Ineither case, you get power-assisted steering as astandard.

For a comprehensive list of those featuresthat are automatically yours once you purchasea Volvo, see the back cover of this catalog. You'd pay extra for some of them in manyshowrooms. And there are other features thatyou couldn't pay extra for if you wanted to.Which are two reasons why people buy ourleast expensive Volvos in the first place. Whenthey pay their money for a car, they like tocome away with a complete car.

It's obvious to everyone who drives a Volvostation wagon that they are really driving aVolvo sedan.

Up front, where drivers and passengers sit,the interior design is nearly the same. Thesame orthopedically designed seats; the sameefficient driving environment designed to keepyou comfortable and alert.

The two cars park just as easily. (They'rethe same length.) Their turning circles are iden-tical. (A tight 32'2" from curb to curb.) In fact, our wagon's overall performance is sedan-like.And that should be good news for drivers, especially women, who have had to wrestlewith overgrown, overweight wagons in the past.

Of course, if you need a wagon, you've gota lot to carry. And the Volvo carries it off. When the second seat is folded down, the car-peted cargo area is big enough to handle a six-foot sofa. It can also handle a crowd of sevenpeople when you add an optional third seat inback. That seat folds down into the floorwhen not in use. So you can load the back withsomething else

We build our Volvo wagon in two versions. . . the popular DL model and the luxury GLE.(See the GLE selection for details.) The DL isequipped with a 107 hp fuel-injected four-cylinder engine with Lambda-Sond® emissioncontrol, four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes,power-assisted steering, a heavy-duty rear sus-pension and a four-speed manual transmission.A four-speed with overdrive or an automaticare optional. Underneath the carpeted cargodeck, there's a large storage compartment thatcan also be used to hold an accessory third seat. There are also tie down points for cargo, acounterbalanced tailgate which lifts easily withone hand and a rear window washer /wiper(with a hand control on the steering column).

Since Volvo station wagons weigh quite abit less than most large wagons, you may savefuel costs, while maintaining an exceptionalcargo area.

We could never understand the wisdom ofbuilding a performance car for the averagedriver that only a professional could handle. The results would run counter to the philosophythat Volvo is most dedicated to: automotivesafety.

One element of handling and performanceneglected by many car makers was built inby our engineers. Predictability. Which meansyou don't have to be a race car driver to knowwhat your car is going to do. The Volvo GTis designed to respond with agility in almost anydriving situation ... with an end result youcan learn to expect, rather than pray for.

It's a car you can buy without sacrificingyour standards of performance. Or your stan-dard of living. Unlike the price tags on those

A luxury car is supposed to give you theluxury of sitting back and getting a long list ofcomfort and convenience features as standardequipment. Features you would otherwisehave to shop for at the car dealership.

In this regard, the Volvo GLE sedan is indeedluxe.

The suggested list price of the car includesVolvo's largest engine, a 130 hp, fuel-injectedV-6 with a Lambda-Sond® emission controlsystem. Your choice of transmissions: four-speed manual with overdrive or a three-speedautomatic. Power-assisted braking and steering,Ventilated front disc brakes for faster cooling.Power windows. A sliding steel sun-roof. Metal-lic paint. Two electrically operated remotecontrol side mirrors. Windshield wipers withan intermittent speed capability. Leather-facedseating. (Velour upholstery is standard on the

Diplomat Black model.) And for those whodread sitting in a cold driver's seat, a heateddriver's seat.

The list for our companion GLE stationwagon is almost identical. Differences: onlyleather-faced seating is available. And anotherintermittent speed wiper is on the back window.

If you're shopping for a luxury sedan, it'llpay to take this list with you. You could findother prestigious cars selling for thousands ofdollars more than the Volvo GLE that make youpay extra for some of these items. (Last year, acar costing almost twice as much as a Volvocomparable to this one did not include thesunroof, leather upholstery, light alloy wheelsand metallic paint as standard equipment.)

On a Volvo GLE, the luxury is standard; notadded on.
