WHAT IS THE MATTER SPEAKS SERIES?

THE MATTER SPEAKS SERIES is an interactive event that allows social issues to be shared upon—by both youth and adults—through oral and musical stage performances. A text conversation among three friends created this idea for students and teachers to be able to share what matters to them. THE MATTER SPEAKS SERIES is the space where individuals—encircled by a community—deliver spoken words, personal stories, and performing arts (for 5 minutes) on gender, sex, race, politics, education, and culture. It is the hope that this series can further empower our students and teachers on how to express their voices in creative ways and educating them on how to become better critical thinkers on community issues.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH


WHAT IS SERIES 2?

Growing out of a small-town school event in California, Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society (the United States has observed it annually throughout the month of March since 1987).

The Women’s History Month Matter Series 2, presented by SHS Women’s Empowerment Club, hopes to present real reflections on this month, based off the creative expressions from the performers. Women’s dreams, challenges, and accomplishments are a part of our American, world, and human story, and true history recognizes how important they have always been. This series is for every gender at Somerville High School to see how women should always be embraced, respected, and supported all year around.
