FARMINGTON —Organizers of the “GetPinked” campaign planto keep their fundraisingmomentum going sothey can help San JuanCounty women diag-nosed with breast cancercover health care costs.

Entering its fourthyear, the “Get PinkedSan Juan County” cam-paign organized by theSan Juan MedicalFoundation is hoping toraise $175,000 for theCathy Lincoln MemorialCancer Fund, named for

a San Juan RegionalMedical Center nursewho died from breastcancer.

A wide range ofevents will take place inOctober to raise moneyfor the fund. The GetPinked Rally kicks offthe campaign on Oct. 4in McGee Park withfood and game booths, music and an attempt toset a new GuinnessWorld Record.

John Oliphant, foun-dation executive direc-tor, said Get PinkedRally participants willbe trying to set therecord for the largest

dance to the song“Gangnam Style” by Psyafter last year’s attemptwas rained out.

This is the first yearthe rally will take placeat the beginning of thecampaign.

“We thought a kick-off rally would ... getmore people involved,”Oliphant said.

Other annual eventsscheduled include thebenefit race and auctionat Aztec Speedway andthe 1-mile fun walk, 5krun and obstacle/mudrun organized by the

Bloomfield FireDepartment.

Brenda Shepherd, foundation assistantmanager of operations, said a new volunteergroup called the GetPinked Ambassadorshave been helping byreaching out to business-es to see if they want toparticipate in the cam-paign.

“They are workingreally hard and they areout talking to businessesand they’ll be attendinga lot of the events inOctober,” Shepherd said.“It’s a major help to thefoundation.”

The Cathy LincolnMemorial Fund was cre-ated to ensure womenwith breast cancer haveaccess to treatments andtests that can catch thecancer early.

Jamie Lujan, Lincoln’sdaughter, said sheremembers late-nighttalks with her motherabout women strugglingwith the costs associatedwith medical treatments.

“It was extremelyimportant to my momthey get help,” Lujansaid.

When Lincoln diedfrom breast cancer in2001, Lujan said shewanted to make suresomething good wouldcome from her mother’sdeath.

Shepherd said thefund was established inOctober 2011 by friendsand family to ensurewomen in San JuanCounty diagnosed withbreast cancer would nothave to struggle to payfor diagnostic tests andtreatments they neededearly on.

“They didn’t wantany women not to get amammogram simplybecause they couldn’tafford it,” Shepherd said.“She saw in her nursing, many women that camein when it was too late. ...That was one of her finalwishes, that someonewould start a fund tohelp these womenbecause she was seeing itmore and more.”

Shepherd said thefund helped 11 womenthe first year and hashelped more than 1,300women in the last 13years.

The foundation workswith area doctors officesto identify women whocould benefit from thefund and after an appli-cation is approved, thefund can help pay formedications, transporta-tion costs and diagnostictests.

Oliphant said thefund helps women whoare under-insured oruninsured. He said theyhave only turned down ahandful of applicants, and those either madetoo much money or hadsufficient insurance.

FARMINGTON — Acalendar featuring SanJuan County womenwho have been diag-nosed with breast cancerthat will be sold as afundraiser for this year’s“Get Pinked” programwas a project photogra-pher Bree Gonzalezcould believe in.

Gonzalez, owner ofFaith Photography, willbe selling copies of her2015 Fighters andSurvivors calendar withphotos of San JuanCounty women at GetPinked events inOctober. The proceedswill benefit the Cathy

Lincoln Memorial Fund.Gonzalez was look-

ing for that special blendof art and communityservice.

“It was a challengefor me to come up withsomething,” Gonzalezsaid.

The idea of a calendarthe brainchild ofGonzalez’s friend SheilaMobley, who pushed theentire project into over-drive with the sugges-tion that it could be afundraiser. She foundthe calendar’s firstmodel, Ellyn Dimond, within 24 hours of talk-ing to Gonzalez.

“We brainstormed forabout 20 minutes andcame up with the calen-

dar,” Gonazalez said. Dimond’s breast can-

cer was discoveredabout two years ago, theday after her sonSullivan’s first birthday.After a year ofc h e m o t h e r a p y ,Dimond’s cancer is cur-rently in remission.

It was a coldFebruary day whenDimond and Gonzaleztraveled to the ChacoCulture NationalHistorical Park to shootDimond’s calendarphoto.

With her hair styledlike a 1950s pinup modeland fluffy pink dress intow, Dimond hikedabout 20 minutes in highheels while helping

carry the camera equip-ment before changinginto her dress in themiddle of the Chacopark hills. It’s a memoryDimond describes ashilarious, although sheclearly remembers thefreezing temperatures.

“It’s been amazing. She cared enough aboutus and she wanted it tobe documented so wecan remember it and notremember it in a nega-tive way,” Dimond said.“It was a nice thing forus personally but alsowe could help otherpeople. It was an impor-tant part of the healingprocess of cancer.Knowing the cancer wasnot in vain and we could

help other people.”Gonzalez said the

project was a littlestressed during the pro-duction of the calendarbut she was surprisedand overwhelmed bythe response.

“I wanted it to beabout San Juan Countyand the women here. Ireally wanted toembrace this area,”Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez pho-tographed women allover San Juan County, including Shiprock,San Juan College, downtown Farmingtonand the Bisti Highway.

Dimond said it wasan amazing opportunityfor the women to be able

to bring awareness tothe Cathy LincolnMemorial Fund whilelearning a little bit moreabout themselves.

“I think it should benoted that Bree’s goalwas to have fun. To haveeach personality comeout in a photo shoot. Most of us haven’t hadtheir picture taken (pro-fessionally) before,”Dimond said. “It wasone way for her to makeus feel good on the out-side as we do in theinside.”

By Molly MaxwellSpecial to The Daily Times

FARMINGTON — Itwas not a convenienttime for the 38-year-oldsingle mother to dealwith breast cancer.

With Christmas com-ing up, the start of thenew year and then herdaughter’s sixth birth-day on Jan. 10, the lumpNicki Parks felt in herright breast one morningin December 2012 wouldjust have to wait.

But when she felt thatstubborn marble againon Jan. 9, 2013, reasonhad its way. The nextday was not only herdaughter’s birthday butalso the start of Parksjourney with the dreaddisease.

“When you’re firstdiagnosed, you think, ‘Idon’t have time for this.I’m going to have to dochemo and surgeriesand be off work,’” Parkssaid. “But then therecomes a point whereyou realize your healthdoesn’t take secondplace to anyone, andyou need to get better soyou can be back withyour family.”

It can be difficult togauge the speed atwhich cancer grows orspreads because it isfueled by chemicals, such as estrogen andprogesterone, that arenormally healthy to thebody, according to theNational Breast CancerFoundation.

HER2 receptors areproteins involved in the

growth of breast cells. Ifthe HER2 gene is notfunctioning properly, cells grow and divideuncontrollably, accord-ing to the foundation’swebsite. This happens inabout a quarter of breastcancer patients.

As most people know, the earlier cancer isdetected, the better apatient’s chances ofbeating it.

Parks attributes herrelatively quick recoveryto the speed at which thedoctors at San JuanRegional Medical Centerpushed her through theprocess.

On Jan. 21, 2013, Parkswas diagnosed with inva-sive ductal carcinoma.Seventeen days later, onFeb. 7, she underwent adouble mastectomy withimmediate reconstruc-tion. She was in surgery torepair a ruptured implanton March 6, and on March25, a little more than twomonths after her diagno-sis, she began the first offour rounds ofchemotherapy.

“Once I made thatdecision to pick up thephone and call the doc-tor, it just seems like awhirlwind,” Parks said.“Part of that I credit tothe doctors. They won’tlet you just sit aroundand take two weeks tomake a decision. Theywant to know, and theywant to know beforeyou leave the office, because it’s nothing toplay around with, andthey take that to heart.”

Parks describes her-

self as the “eternal opti-mist.” But even sheadmits it wasn’t opti-mism alone that helpedher through her journey.

Her 6-year-olddaughter, Jordyn, knewabout her mother’s ill-ness and life marchedon. Some days, Parksdrove Jordyn to schooland gymnastics practice, just like normal. And onthe days she couldn’t —those days when theeffects of chemotherapyleft her bed-ridden for12 hours — she had hercrew.

The Farmingtonmother’s best friend,Christy Dunson, pickedup Jordyn for the week-end when Parks was ather weakest. And Nickiand her daughtermoved in with Nicki’smother, Loretta Parks, who is retired. Thegrandmother calledJordyn “our glue.”

“We did our level bestto ensure her life wasnormal with play datesand sleepovers,” LorettaParks said. “We wantedto protect Jordyn.”

Nicki Parks creditsthe love and support offriends and family forhelping her beat the dis-ease.

“I fought it. I beat it.Now back to my life,”she said. “It’s like a blipin my radar.”

Now, Nicki andLoretta Parks give backto the community byparticipating in the “GetPinked” campaign.

Nicki Parks took partin the Pink Glove Dance,

a video organized bySheila Mobley, owner ofDanz Force Dance andGymnastics Academy ofFarmington. Last year, she was a model in theBreast CancerAwareness Luncheonand Style Show, whichraises money for theCathy Lincoln MemorialCancer Fund.

“You get to wear real-ly cool clothes fromNatalie’s. They do yourhair, your make up.They give you a mas-

sage. You get to walk therunway,” she said. “It’s agood mix of all thestages of survivorhood. It makes you feel spe-cial.”

Loretta Parks is anambassador for the “GetPinked” campaign, vol-unteering her time tocontact businesses.

Nicki Parks complet-ed her chemotherapyMay 28, 2013. On Sept.20, 2013, she had herfinal surgery to placepermanent implants.

Now, she is in remissionand said her life hasreturned to her “newnormal.”

She still gets tired andsometimes needs to takedays off work. But eventhrough the worst times, when she thought shecouldn’t go on, a quotefrom a friend helpedher:

“You don’t have to doit for a month,” Parkswould tell herself. “Youjust have to do it fortoday.”
