Thecharacteristicofthe2-flutedrillingprocessisthatcoolantisfedthroughthecoolantholesinthetoolandexitsalongwiththechipsintheflutesfromthedrilledhole.Thecoolantalsoprovideslubricationtothedrillperiphery.
Conditions for successful deep hole drilling
1. Anefficientcoolantandfiltrationsystemwithafiltrationof20µmto30µm(thesmallerthediameter,thebetterthecoolantandfiltrationshouldbe).
2. Suitablecoolant,i.e.deepholedrillingoiloremulsion(min.10-12%concentration,withe.p.additives)hastobeprovidedinsufficientquantityandpressure.Minimumquantitylubrication(MQL)maybeusedundercertainconditions.
3. Drillguidingthroughdrillbushorpilotholeintheworkpiece.
The2-flutegundrillisnotselfcentering.Whenpositioningthedrill,thetoolmustbeguidedthroughadrillbushorapilothole.Thequalityoftheguideholeaffectsthedrillingperformance(toollife,centrelinedeviation,etc.).

ForpreciseholeswerecommendtousetheISOtoleranceG6.Thedimensionsspecifiedinthetableareguidevalues.Toavoidchippingtothecuttingedge,achamferedpilothole(F)isrecommendeddependingonthemachiningrequirements.Pleaserefertoapplicationnotesonpage18.

Theidealviscosity of deep-hole drilling oilshouldbe15mm²/s(60-70SUS)at40°Cfordrillingdiametersupto18mm.
Whenusingemulsion,thespecifiedpressures(p)maybereducedbyupto~20%.
For all drill diameters filtering is required between 5 μm and 20 μm.

1. Before using the drills make sure the machine has the necessary equipment to do proper deep hole drilling. The machine should have suitable safety guarding for protection from cutting chips and coolant for operator. Checkwithmachinebuilder!
2. Improper use or handling of deep hole drilling tools can cause serious injuries,e.g.skincutsfromthecuttingedge.
3. Deepholedrillingtoolsarenotselfcenteringandcanbeunbalanced.Thereforethedrillsmustbeguidedduring the start of the drilling cyclebymeansofasufficientlylongdrillbushorpilothole.
4. Tool support: unsupported drill lengthshouldneverexceedthedimensionsasshownontable.Iftheunsupporteddrilllengthisexceededthedrillmightcauseinjury.
Maximum unsupported drill length (L) between the steady rests or in a guide hole.
5. Thegundrillisfedintoapilotholewhile non rotatingorrotatedslowlyat<50RPM(illustration).Thenthecoolantandthemachinespindleshouldgetstarted.
6. After reaching the drilling depthswitchoffthecoolantandretractwiththespindlestoppedorslowlyrotatedat<50RPM.
7. Grindingofcarbideproducesdust(cobalt,etc.)thatmaybepotentiallyhazardous.Useadequateventilationandsafetyglassesduringgrinding.
8. Consequences of not followingourapplicationnotesNo.1-7.
