The National Building Code of India (NBC), a comprehensive building Code, is a national instrument providing guidelines for regulating the building construction activities across the country. It serves as a Model Code for adoption by all agencies involved in building construction activities be they Public Works Departments, other government construction departments, local bodies or private construction agencies. The Code mainly contains administrative provisions, development control rules and general building requirements; fire and life safety requirements; stipulations regarding building materials, structural design and construction (including safety); building and plumbing services; approach to sustainability; and asset and facility management. The Code was first published in 1970 at the instance of the then Planning Commissions and was subsequently revised in 1983 and 2005. The Code has now been revised again as NBC 2016 and formally released on 15 March 2017. Due to large scale changes in the building construction activities, such as change in nature of occupancies with prevalence of high rises and mixed occupancies, greater dependence and complicated nature of building services, development of new/innovative construction materials and technologies, greater need for preservation of environment and recognition of need for planned management of existing buildings and built environment, there has been a paradigm shift in building construction scenario. Considering these, a Project for comprehensive revision of NBC was taken up under the aegis of National Building Code Sectional Committee, CED 46 of BIS and its 22 expert Panels; involving as many as 1000 experts. As a culmination of the Project, the revised NBC was brought out as National Building Code of India 2016 (NBC 2016).
The Workshop provides a platform to highlight the philosophy and salient changes including number of new concepts, provisions and chapters incorporated in the recently revised in NBC 2016. It further intends to provide guidance for effective implementation of the Code by all the s t a k e h o l d e r s fo r e n s u r i n g o rd e r l y, s a fe, accessible and sustainable development of buildings and built environment in the country.

BIS is the National Standard Body of India established under the BIS Act 1986 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and formatters connected therewith or incidental thereto. A new Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) Act 2016 which was notified on 22 March, 2016, has been brought into force with effect from 12 October, 2017, that reinforces the activities of BIS in respect to standardization and certification of goods, article, process, system and service.BIS has been providing traceability and tangibility benefits to the national economy in a number of ways-providing safe reliable quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers; promoting exports and imports substitute; control over proliferation of varieties, etc through standardization, certification and testing.Keeping in view, the interest of consumers as well as the industry, BIS is involved in various activities such as given below:
The standards Formulation activity is carried out through 14 Division Councils and over 900 Technical Committees functioning there under that have so far developed over 19000 Indian Standards. BIS has its Headquarters at New Delhi and its 05 Regional Offices (ROs) are at Kolkata (Eastern), Chennai (southern), Mumbai (western), Chandigarh (Northern and Delhi (Central). Under the Regional offices are the Branch offices (BOs) located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Faridabad, Ghaziabad , Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, lucknow, Nagpur, parwanoo, Patna, Pune, Rajkot, Raipur, Durgapur, Jamshedpur and Vishakhapatnam, which offer certification services to the industry and serve as effective link between State Governments, industries, technical institutions, consumer organization, etc of the respective region.
