Life of David

The Humble Side of David’s Life His Mother Was an Ex-Wife of the Ammonite King

Nahash, Probably a Concubine (1 Sam 10:1; 2 Sam 10:2; 17:25, 27)

She Bore from Him Two Daughters, Zeruah (Mother of Joab and Abishai) and Abigail (Mother of Amasa)

She Was Probably Given to Jesse, and Elder of Judah, for Diplomatic Relationship

From Jesse She Bore David, Who Was Not Liked by Seven Older Brothers

Her Two Daughters Were Single Mothers

Ps 51: Preamble For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan

the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. (Psa 51:1a NAU)

(2 Sam 12) Nathan vs. David Nathan Told a Parable David Convicted the Guilty to Death Nathan: You Are the Man! David (Ps 51): I Am the Man!

Ps 51:1-2 1 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your

lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot

out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. (Psa 51:1-2 NAU)

Ps 51:3-4 3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. 4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. (Psa 51:3-4 NAU)

Ps 51: 5-6 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know

wisdom. (Psa 51:5-6 NAU)

Ps 51:7-9 7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. 9 Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. (Psa 51:7-9 NAU)

Ps 51:10-12 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. (Ps 51:10-12)

Ps 51:13-14 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of

my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your

righteousness.

Ps 51:15-17 15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. 16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would

give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not

despise.

Ps 51:18-19 18 By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.

The Need of Forgiveness Humility and Honesty before God Is the Beginning of

Spiritual Life “Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit, for Theirs Is the

Kingdom of Heaven” Vss. 1-2: A Plead for Pardon; the Right Approach to

God Vss. 3-4: A Confession of Personal Sins Vss. 5-6: A Confession of Original Sin Vss. 7-9: An Appeal for Cleansing, the Right Faith in

God

The Need of Reconstitution Not Restoration; nor Reconstruction; but

Reconstitution “Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, for They Shall Be

Comforted” Vss. 10-12:

Create in me a clean heart, O God Create (Heb: bara): cause to exist from non-existence

Used in Gen 1, Only for Three Times: ex hihilo Creation of Heavens and the Earth Creation of Self-conscious Beings: Animals Creation of God-conscious Beings: Men All Have Something Completely New: Matter; Soul; Spirit

Clean Heart: Did Not Have It in the First Place New Creation; Reconstitution; “Born from Above”

Renew a steadfast spirit within me Renew (Heb: chodesh): Repair, Refresh, Upgrade Steadfast (Heb: nakon): Established, Resolute Spirit (Heb: ruah): Breath, Wind, Spirit, Mindset Sinners Lose Direction in life God Can Refresh the Resolute Spirit within a Good

Man (but a Sinner), Now Leading to the Right direction

Do not cast me away from Your presence Sinners Cannot Be at God’s Presence

God Cannot Take It Sinners Cannot Take It

People of God Who Sinned Cannot Feel God’s Presence They Are Denied at the Court of God They Prayers Will Not Be heard until They Repent

The Consequence of an Unclean Heart Is Separation from God

Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me The Holy Spirit May Fall upon OT Saints in order to

Give Them Power for the Ministry of God, but May Leave Them if They Sin. Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in

the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward… (1Sa 16:13 NAU)

Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him. (1Sa 16:14 NAU)

Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me The Holy Spirit Enter and Indwell the NT Saints

Permanently. He Will Never Leave Them. If They Sinned;

He will Not Fill Them He Will Let Them Know of the Alienation They Lose Fellowship, not Salvation

This Grace Should Not Be Taken Advantage of Those Who Do Are Probably Never Born Again

Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me In Him, you also, after listening to the message of

truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, (Eph 1:13 NAU)

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, (Eph 5:18 NAU)

1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? (Rom 6:1-2 NAU)

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit. What Was Lost When People of God Sin Is the Joy of

Salvation Salvation Itself Is Never Lost Willing Spirit (Heb: ruah nidivah): a spirit of generous,

free, willing David Asked God to Be Generous in Grace

Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You. The “Ways of God” to Sinners Is Judgment and

Restoration Judgment Can Befall on the Sinner or the Replacement

(Lamb of God) Those Who Believe and Repent Are Reconstituted,

Better Than Being Restored Conversion Is Believing in the Redemption and

Repentance for Restoration

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. Sin Bars Men from the Presence and Service of God God Can Forgive even the Evilest Sins The Believers Are Given Salvation and Restoration in

Service of God, Maybe in a Lesser Honor, but Honorable Non-the-less

David Could Not Build the Temple, but His Son Did

O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. Sinners Reconstituted as Saints Are Natural in praising

God They Know God’s Righteousness and Grace Sometimes It Takes God’s Action to Open Our Lips,

Overcoming Our Over-Consciousness of Men’s Reaction

For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. God Did not Delight in People Using External

Ceremonial Religious Actions to Replace Internal Repentance and Faith

Whole Burnt Offering is Only Meaningful If It Means Whole Person Dedication

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. A Broken Spirit Is the Openness for Grace “Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, for they Shall Be

Comforted”

By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. Religion May Be Ultimately Private, but It Has a Public

Dimension Personal Sins May Have Collective Damage Prayer Should Not Be Individualistic; it Should Cover

the Greater World Around Us David Prayed That God Would Finish the building of

Jerusalem, City Wall ands Temple Only Solomon, the Son of David, Finished Them

Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar. Offering Is Meaningful and Welcomed by God if the

Offerers Are Saved, Repentant and in Fellowship with God

Generous Offerings to God Demonstrate a Thankful Heart, which Glorifies God’s Grace.
