History

The market stall is now held every second month (June, August, etc), but the responsibility for providing produce falls particularly on Janet Cook, with assistance from Pamela Smith, Pam Stewart and Margaret Meyer. We really do need more members to contribute ‘goodies’ for sale.

Come on, younger set, how about stepping in with some new ideas? All proceeds go the Fellowship’s general funds.

Annual Dinner on Thursday, 12 June at Naughton’s Hotel, opposite Trinity College in Royal Parade. All are welcome to attend. RSVP Sunday, 8 June. Contact one of the following if you will be attending. Roger Meyer, Kristina Macrae at [email protected] or Libby Brookes on 9817 5629.

The carpark behind the Chapel will not be accessible on Sundays in June, due to the area being dug up for the installation of underground cables.

This applies particularly to the first Sunday of the month, and Sundays when the choir sings Evensong.

Special arrangements have been made for the elderly members of the morning congregation.

The tenth Woodend Winter Arts Festival will be held on Queen’s Birthday weekend (6 – 9 June). For further information, phone 0447 570 327 or see http://woodendwinterartsfestival.org.au.

The Netherlands Bach Society, with many guest musicians, are recording one of Bach’s works every week, for 1080 weeks (the total number of Bach’s works), which will take about 20 years! They have done six so far, and I warmly recommend them. All performances are available on their website AoB All of Bach http://allofbach.com

(I particularly enjoyed Ich habe genug).

The Committee has commissioned Roger Meyer to develop a proposal for the writing of the history of the St John’s / Canterbury Fellowship. While the proposal is being developed, the writing of the history has already begun! A key factor in the writing of any church history is its members; their contribution and recollections. Roger will be inviting members to contribute to this important project.

Jacopo Peri’s Euridice on course at Woodend

Chaplain’s Letter

Preparations in the production of the 17th Century opera Euridice featuring the Fellowship Choir’s George Kozlowski and Matthew and Daniel Thompson, are well on track. Originally presented in Florence on 6 October, 1600 in celebration of the marriage of Maria deí Medici to Henri IV, King of France, the opera tells the story of the newlywed Euridice’s death by snakebite and of her husband Orpheus’s voyage to Hades to plead for her return.

As we reported last year, our musical director John O’Donnell was busy laying out the preparation for the performance this month and trying to secure funding for the project to go ahead. “We’re all working very hard. I’m down to 4 hours sleep”, he said. “We’ve raised some money. We’re sticking our necks out to put it on, lets put it that way. We had to decide at a certain point that we could do it but one makes a budget and looks at the realities. If we get a good response it should be a success”.

John said whilst obtaining the original score off the internet was easy, many hours were spent updating old clefs to enable today’s performers to read the music, as well as making many corrections and transposing up the pitch to match what it was in 1600.

“These things take time to organise,” he said. “Finding people and getting them organised in a tight budget was hard and we’re working at it all the time. But it’s all coming together, we have a very good team and they’re all madly learning their parts at the moment. It won’t be until a fortnight before the performance that we rehearse”.

Euridice also stars Jacqueline Porter in the title role and Robert Macfarlane as Orfeo with Jennifer Cook, Christopher Roache, Daniel Thomson, Matthew Thomson, Helen Gagliano, Jerzy Kozlowski, Michelle Clark and Michael Strasser and features Accademia Arcadia under the musical direction of John O’Donnell with stage production by Rodney Hall.

The four performances are on 6,7,8,9 June.

gather some fresh insights into chaplaincy and pastoral care at a residential college. I also plan to gather together the various Trinity alumni studying at Oxford, and to interview them about their studies and their lives over in the UK.

After Oxford I will be visiting St John’s College Cambridge, talking to their Dean of Chaplains and Chaplain about the organization of residential life and chaplaincy. Once again I will be worshipping with them on the Sunday, listening to the world-famous St John’s College choir.

Another important part of this trip will be some study leave time, when I plan to visit some archives important to my doctorate, and talk to some key academics and scholars working in a similar area.

I will be back among you on the second Sunday in July – after a quick trip to meet a new grandchild who is expected at the end of June in Canberra. In the meantime I will leave you in the more than capable hands of the George Mitchell Fellow, Bishop Ian George.

May God be with you! Lynda

On Sunday June 1st I leave Trinity for a month long trip to the UK. Part of this will be college business, part will be study leave and a small part some recreational leave when I will catch up with friends and with my brother.

When I arrive in London I will be staying with Meg Warner, who worshipped with you all regularly until she flew to London to marry Richard Burridge. Richard is the Dean of King’s college London, and I will spend the first week meeting with him, and with his college chaplain to talk about college life and how they manage chaplaincy and pastoral care, and their chapel life. I will also be meeting with the Church of England advisor for higher education at Westminster.

From there I will be travelling to Oxford, where I will be staying at Christ Church College. On the Sunday I will be worshipping at the wonderful Christ Church cathedral, and looking particularly at their College Communion service, as well as enjoying listening to the cathedral choir at evensong. Over a couple of days I will be meeting with their Dean of Chaplains and college Chaplain, again to
