PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

it’s a ‘new year’ at Mooredale!

i hope that summer treated everyone well and that some wonderful memories were made wherever you

may have spent your time. Mooredale was certainly a big part of many of our members’ summers with our wonderful

day camp once again providing a summer of fun for our young campers and the pool club offering an oasis in the middle of the city on those hot, humid days. As well, our competitive soccer players kept the spirit of the game alive with a successful summer season representing Mooredale, all as we cheered on Canada’s own Pan Am athletes in every sport! With the advent of fall, exciting things start happening at Mooredale! Check out our programs: new offerings such as Kinder Science and Yoga, along with the always popular karate, fitness, music classes and so much more. As part of our ‘seamless day’ collaboration between the Programs department and Preschool, we’re introducing a bilingual (French) art program at noon. The After Four program that is operated out of Whitney Public School sees the addition of School House Chess along with offering the always popular School Play, Lego Engineering and many other interesting and educational programs. It’s a great way to keep the young people in your family occupied and learning. Sunday afternoon Flag Football at Rosedale Park is a fantastic way to get your kids outdoors and active and has a become a popular tradition. House League soccer continues to bring our community together and our nurturing and very special preschool opens its classroom doors to our youngest members once again. Soctoberfest returns to Lamport Stadium on October 3 for all of us enthusiastic soccer-loving adults; if you are keen on pulling together a team (all abilities have a place), please don’t hesitate to get a hold of Chris Keem in the Sports office for more information. I can vouch firsthand for an outstanding day of soccer – you’ll feel like a kid again!

As well, Mooredale Talks, our very own speaker series at Mooredale House, will start up again with an evening talk scheduled for the first part of October. Please stay tuned and continue checking our Mooredale website for more information. All three speakers who we have hosted have entertained and educated us on a variety of topics from kids and nature to the university application process to raising creative, happy children. More such evenings are in store for the coming year. As always, I encourage each of our members to look at their many talents and interests and consider sharing them with our community. New ideas are always welcome here at Mooredale and I trust that this new year at Mooredale will be a great one! Have a wonderful fall season and please don’t hesitate to reach out and explore all that Mooredale has to offer.

We are blessed with a warm and welcoming atmosphere everywhere at Mooredale. The fine summer weather and the excellent leadership from our summer staff gave more than 2,500 members some great summer memories at Mooredale. Thanks to Carolyn Burgess, Eric Mussleman, Chris Keem, and Stephanie Chu and their outstanding staff teams at preschool summer fun, day camp, the soccer club, and the pool club. 2015 was truly a summer to cherish! Many new members joined last spring to enroll in soccer, the pool, and our day camp. Now is your chance to explore and experiment with more ways to enjoy your membership at Mooredale. Life balance is all about healthy active living. Take a step in that direction and find something to play, learn, improve or discover at Mooredale this year. We’re ready, you’re set, let’s go!

Mooredale Staff news

Welcome to Ignacio Mateo, our new Property & Maintenance Staff. Mateo brings experience as a custodian at a Toronto church, and also as a part-time

maintenance staff at the City of Toronto. He will be responsible to set-up for all our activities and meetings, and will work to keep the facilities clean and safe for our members and guests. Thanks to Jeremy Foote, who was the student maintenance staff from May to August. Thanks and farewell to Ryan Paulsen, who left Mooredale Maintenance in May to pursue other opportunities. We wish him well and thank him for his years of service. Camp people will know Erin Ciona, (Gnomeo), who will be our evening office staff person this year. She works Monday to Thursday from late afternoon until 8:30. Erin has been on staff here for 5 summers and she will be very helpful to our members, due to her broad knowledge of Mooredale. The ‘Mooredale family’ has expanded thanks to Stephanie Chu! Stephanie and her husband Chris welcomed their son, Hudson Alan Ricketts, born on August 9. Stephanie began her maternity leave on August 3 – good timing!

Fall Fun Awaits You... Ready, Set, Go!

Thank you to our volunteers

Mooredale soccer and sports programs are led by a dedicated team of parent volunteers. This summer Chris Keem,

our Soccer and Sports Manager, recognized Nicholas Thadaney who is our most recent addition to the ‘10+ team club.’ Nicholas has

coached 10 Mooredale soccer and flag football teams including his two current house league soccer teams the U12 Girls Barcelona and U10 Boys Manchester City. Nick has been coaching his children Caroline and James since 2007 and has this advice for prospective coaches: “GET INVOLVED! Your kids are only young once and when they get older they won’t want you around. It is gratifying and a wonderful way to stay close to your most precious treasure(s) as well as building a tighter connection to one of the greatest communities we could ever be a part of.” Congratulations and thank you to Nicholas! Mooredale is lucky to have seven volunteers who have coached more than 10 teams since 2008. Thank you to all our volunteers for their outstanding contributions to Mooredale Soccer and Sports.

James Barrass and Joanne Pauli, our current Mayfair co-chairs, were recognized for 30 years of volunteer service. Doug Reid, Lynda Smith and Cathy Thomas received awards for 40+ years of volunteer service and Doug Hall was recognized for an incredible 50 years of Mooredale volunteer service. Thank you to these amazing volunteers for their contributions to Mooredale.

Mm-mmm, I want to linger, mm-mmm, a little longer…

the 2015 summer camp season is over and we are thankful for all the families who chose us this summer for their day camp adventure! We had a wonderful summer running the

program and spending time with all of our campers – some for a few days and others for a few weeks. The summer was filled with big splashes and even bigger smiles in the pool, singing at Morning Madness, and lunch time competitions between counsellors. The campers were entertained by Cleanabelle and her zany friends Clean Dean, Dirty Dan, Messy Jessy and Voldemop. This summer Mooredale campers had many adventures off-site. We explored and bounced at Whittamore’s Farm, explored the outdoors at Humber Arboretum and Downsview, survived rain and shine at Kelso Provincial Park, went on safari at the Toronto Zoo, and toured City Hall and Fork York. Here at camp we expanded our after-camp French program to include art and cooking, saw our Senior campers produce, practice and perform Peter Pan, and even blew up watermelons with elastics! While having fun is a great aspect of camp, ‘fun’ isn’t why we exist. The best part of camp is building relationships, growing community and seeing the campers and staff grow as people. So many of our campers this summer accomplished their swimming levels, passed their deep end tests, hit a bulls-eye in archery and grew their social skills. It is so exciting for our staff to see campers accomplish their goals and try something new. But we also saw campers grow in their character – learning to share with others, letting someone else go first, resolving conflicts in a healthy way, and being respectful of those around us. Seeing our campers ‘grow-up’ in these little ways is what makes summer camp such a special and rewarding place to work.

It always takes a strong team with many different people to make any summer camp a success. I would like to thank Gnomeo (Erin Ciona) for returning for her fifth summer. Gnomeo has the job of managing our camp office, monitoring daily communication with parents and liaising with the pool managers to ensure everyone gets to their correct swimming lessons. Plus, if there was a Pan-Am competition for Lip-Syncing she would be a medal contender. She did an amazing job all around and we couldn’t have had such a good summer without her tireless work. I would also like to thank Shannon Hill (River) for doing an excellent job in the Program Director role this summer. Her creative ideas and always-positive personality helped ensure our programs ran smoothly. The campers thoroughly enjoyed all of our fantastic Theme Days and field trips. Huge thank you needs to be given to the rest of the strong leadership team. Katrina (Neon), Kelsey (Bruce), Erin (Li’l Red), Sarah (Kobe), Charlotte (Atlas) and Jessica (Piton) worked tirelessly with the counsellors to set up programs, deal with camper conflict, distribute snacks and lunch, dress up in crazy costumes, create crazy Meal Time Madness competitions, and do the 1001 things that need to be done every day to make camp a success. And last, but certainly not least, we all owe the counsellors a huge thank you for the work they did every day with the campers. Each morning at 8 am they arrived ready and excited to work and they faithfully stuck to their duties until the last camper went home at four. For many of them this was their first ‘real’ job, and it was such a pleasure to walk with them through the experience and to see them take on this challenging responsibility. We look forward seeing everyone back next summer!

Members and their guests are welcome to drop by Mooredale anytime in the mornings, from

9:30 to noon, and enjoy a cup of coffee on us! Our lovely, sunny living room on the 2nd floor of

the Main House is available to you. Just check in at the office and we will show you the way.

Occasionally, the room may be booked for a meeting or other members may be waiting while

a program is operating for an hour. No worries, it’s another chance to meet some neighbours

in a friendly atmosphere. Please be aware that our parking lot is particularly busy during the

morning drop off and pick-up times (8:45 – 9:15 and 11:15 to 11:45). Please remember your

‘parking lot’ safety when you are here.

Mooredale – Do drop in!

it was a Sea of Electric Green this summer in our playground. Covered from neck to knees in these brightly coloured T-shirts our smallest Mooredale campers, A.K.A. Busy Bees, Happy

Hippos, Jolly Giraffes and Funky Monkeys, buzzed, splashed, stretched and swung about each and every day in each and every corner of the Mooredale Playground. Our Mooredale lifeguards, Nancy, Tyson, Simone and Ellen added to the fun by ensuring a splashing good time for all in the pool each day. And while it’s always sad to see the summer end we have so much to look forward to this fall… With September just around the corner, a new school year awaits with a program rich with experiences and opportunities to inspire our children to become active and involved learners. 2015 – Another Great Pool Season!

On behalf of the Pool Club Executive – the Mooredale

volunteers who provide advice and support to our

staff colleagues – I thank two special groups for making our Pool such a magical place. One of the great joys in coming to the Pool is dealing with the exceptional group of young adults that is our team of Lifeguards, Instructors, Shift Leaders and Managers. Well done and thank you so much! And another special thanks goes to the Moms and Dads and kids of all ages who make up our membership. The Pool is so special because we have such a special and fun group of members!

thank you Mooredale Pool staff and thank you Mooredale Pool members! Our Pool Club Annual Meeting takes place at 7:30pm on Wednesday, October 21. All Pool Members are most welcome to attend. And do tell your friends who aren’t yet Pool members that now is the time to get on the wait list. Call the office today and they will (almost certainly) be swimming next year! Finally, make sure you remember where you put your membership cards over the winter – you’ll need them for opening day 2016!

ur new season starts and ends with hot Canadian talent. International performers from Leipzig, London, and Herning, Denmark take up the middle with two making their Canadian debuts on our stage.

Welcome to Mooredale Concerts 27th year. We’re very proud that our promise to offer the highest quality classical performances at remarkably affordable prices still remains strong. Six concerts subscriptions are only $140; seniors $130; and for patrons under 30, just $90. Subscribers are not only assured of their seats, but also save up to 47% over single ticket purchases. All 2015-16 concerts conveniently take place at Walter Hall in the Edward Johnson Building, University of Toronto, 80 Queen’s Park (Museum subway), Sundays at 3:15 p.m. The 500-seat theatre guarantees an intimate setting, and the ability to truly experience the artistry up close. You will sit no further back than 14 rows in a venue with perfect acoustics.

MUSIc & TRUFFLES – Classical Music for Family EnjoymentOur 13th season begins on November 1. Artists featured in five of the six concerts will also perform a one-hour interactive concert for young people 6-11 at 1:15 p.m. in Walter Hall (no concert Sept. 27). Adults wishing to learn more about music and music making are also welcome. Subscriptions are only $50, and include a chocolate truffle for everyone at the end of each concert. NEW this season! Orders can also be mailed to Mooredale Concerts, 146 Crescent Road, Toronto M4W 1V2, or phoned in to Joanna directly at 416-922-3714 ext. 103. Stewart Goodyear – Legendary Piano Variations Sunday, September 27: Concert Series 3:15pmInternationally acclaimed Toronto-born pianist Stewart Goodyear mounts two pinnacles of the piano repertoire on one distinctly ambitious program – J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. Goodyear is highly admired for his distinctively elegant playing, technical facility, emotional depth, and searching nature. He has made news throughout North America with his Beethoven sonata marathons, performing all 32 in one day; a virtuosic feat that is almost becoming commonplace for this artist. As he told writer Colin Eatock in the Globe and Mail, “To me, (Beethoven) represents all human emotions – every layer of humanity is explored and dissected in the sonatas.” Especially for Mooredale Concerts (where he performed as a young artist), Stewart will pair his love of Beethoven with that of an

earlier giant of keyboard music, J.S. Bach. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Glenn Gould’s landmark recording of the Goldberg Variations, an event Goodyear celebrates with his own take on the massive work. In a recent interview with Peter Robb of the Ottawa Citizen, he described Bach as “such a selfless composer, a spiritual composer. In life there are some experiences that test your strength. Going back to spirituality brings you closer to the next chapter.” “In an era where few unambiguously great Diabelli Variations recordings grace the catalog as individual releases... I embrace Goodyear’s mindful mastery and integrity with open arms and grateful ears.” – Classics Today “One of the best pianists of his generation” – Philadelphia Inquirer Single tickets go on sale September 1. Tickets for this premium concert are $40 adult/senior, $20 for under age 30, available online at www.mooredaleconcerts.com or by phone, and at the door. All seats are general admission. If you subscribe to all six concerts, the average price per concert is less than $25! Join us this season. Enrich your life with the sweet sounds of superb classical music!
