    Creating

    an

    Elastic

    ody

At the most simple level of the physical body, all bagua and tai chi techniques

    are

    ultimately about

    an

    elastic body that enables you

    to

    feel completely comfortable

    within your own skin.

At a dramatically higher level, creating

    an

open, clear and awake mind capable

of great elasticity in your emotions, mental thoughts, psychic abilities and kar-

    ma

(the third, fourth, fifth and sixth energy bodies, respectively)

    is

    fundamental

to how the principles of the

    I hing

are realistically downloaded into a human s

    psyche or inner life.

    Looking at elasticity from

    an

    anatomical perspective (concerning the fascia,

tendons and ligaments), the central purpose

    is

    to physically create a flexible

    body. Most people

    think

    the human body

    is

    held

    up

    by bones, which

    is

    incorrect.

A series of ligaments, many of which are stronger than bones,

    are

    actually

responsible for holding the human body erect. Your foot and legs are connected

to your pelvis, belly, head, neck and fingertips by either a series of interconnect-

    ing ligaments and

    fascia

    An

elastic body not only gets all of the ligaments, fascia and other soft tissues of

    the body

    to

    move freely and easily,

    but

    also creates

    an

    incredible rubber-band

    like quality. There

    is an

    alternating lengthening and shortening effect.

    All babies have

    an

    elastic body. People love

    to

    playfully pull their hands, arms

and legs and watch them retract like a rubber band. Taoist chi methods wheth-

er bagua, tai chi, qigong or yoga seek to recreate this quality inside human

    beings.

    Elasticity enables significantly better movement

    of

    the joints, spine and

internal organs. Constant pulling and releasing

    of

    ligaments inside the body

    is

    what

    causes

    the natural and healthy movement

    of

    the internal organs.

In bagua, this elasticity, when combined with physical and energetic twisting

    and spiraling movements,

    cause

    the joints

    to

    constantly and smoothly grow and

shrink (open and close). This pumps the synovial fluid inside the joints.

Elasticity positively affects and moves all associated tissue related

    to

    making the

joints strong and keeping them flexible. When the joints lose elasticity, some

    common health problems include:

    Arthritis

    Becoming prone

    to

    injuries

    Ligaments harden, overstretch or

    get

    pulled

    out of

    their natural

    alignment.

    Basically

    many

    of

    the ailments typically associated

    with

    aging

    are

    the result

    of

the body losing the natural elasticity

    it

    had

    as

    a baby.

    Today

    we re seeing people

    as

    young

    as

their teens experiencing health problems previously associated with

middle age (and older) because of the reliance on computers and lack

    of

    physical

    activity.

Making your body incredibly flexible and elastic

    is

    a specialty

    of

    bagua and tai chi

    practice that

    can

serve you well into old age.
