The Commonwealth Games 2010 – An Introduction

The Commonwealth Games 2010 (CWG) will be held in Delhi between 3rd October and 14th October 2010

The 2010 CWG would be India's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games

India is expecting about

~2 million tourists in New Delhi for the Games,

as well as about 7,000 athletes,

from 71 teams representing Commonwealth member states and territories

The opening ceremony of CWG will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.

Cleanliness – making it a habit rather than compulsion

• Don’t throw the trash anywhere on the roads or other public places

• Avoid spitting & passing urine at public places or roadside

• Don't allow water to stagnate as it will provide a breeding place for mosquitoes

• Carry a small bag with you to take care of your litter – you can then empty the bag at home OR a designated garbage can

• Take an initiative to keep your surroundings clean

• Support the authorities in their cleanliness drive – help them in keeping stray animals in check

CWG has started to create a drive to keep the city clean and to develop civic sense

Traffic Diversions & Special Routes During CWG

CWG 2010 Lanes – the right broad blue bands bearing the CWG logo on the key movement areas will be reserved for CWG traffic – motorists are advised not to drive on these lanes

• The CWG lane becomes operational after September 20 and the motorists violating it will be fined Rs 2,000 and their vehicles could be impounded

During CWG there will be numerous diversions in and around Central Delhi. Please join Delhi Police ‘SMS traffic alert service’ on traffic jams and diversion updates. To join the service SMS "Join DTP" to 09219592195

Trivia

First ever Green Commonwealth Games - Delhi 2010 will be the first ever Green Games and will set green standards for other multi-sports events.

Largest Commonwealth Games in the history - around 7000 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories will be participating in CWG 2010

• Even Pakistan will be sending ~125 athletes

In preparation for an influx of English-speaking tourists for the Games, the Delhi government is implemented programs to teach English, and the necessary skills for serving tourists, to key workers – such as cab drivers, security workers, waiters, porters, and service staff.

• In addition to Delhi, the Government plans to expand the program to teach people in local tourist destinations in other parts of India
