September 2016 Recently, I was taking my oldest child, Kay, to the unknown

territory of 7th grade registration. The days leading up to this day,

were filled with every emotion under the sun: fear, excitement,

nervousness, for both of us! The day came to leave for registration,

and the emotions hit hard. Scenarios started playing in my mind.

“What if she gets lost?” “What if kids are mean to her?” “What if no

one helps her?” As we opened the gym door together, we came to

the first of many tables that outlined the gym. At the first table, we

were greeted with a warm smile and a soft voice, “Welcome to

Lincoln Middle School. If you look around, there are many tables,

and every single one of these teachers are glad you are here today.”

All of a sudden I could sense both of our fears calmed. Going from table to table, everyone

was happy to see us there, and answered all of our questions.

These emotions are still real whenever we go into unknown territory. We all started as

the “new attendees” of our church at one point of our life. We probably still remember “that

person” who welcomed us with open arms. That one person who made it feel like you were

in the right place, helped you with any question you had, made it feel more like family and

were glad to see you every week. Everyone needs that person! Now is the time to pay it

forward and calm the fears of those new people around you. It takes a lot of courage to walk

through the double doors for the first time. Today, be the face of love and be welcoming.

You are that person.

Dear Church Family,

In September of last year we introduced

a new ministry in our church called The Story.

Meeting on Wednesday evenings in Fellowship

Hall, The Story was a 31-week adventure of

learning about the journey of God with his peo-

ple through a systematic reading of the Bible

from Genesis through Revelation. We served a

potluck-style dinner at 5:30pm, followed by the

6:00-7:00pm program. After opening prayer

and music, we divided the group into children

and adults, with the children meeting with the Children’s Ministry Team upstairs in

Pilgrim Hall and the adults remaining in Fellowship Hall. The adults watched a 15-

minute video presentation by Randy Frazee, followed by both large group and ta-

ble discussion around the chapter for the day. The children then rejoined the adults

for a final song in Fellowship Hall.

This fall we will follow up on The Story with Believe, a 30-week program pro-

duced by the same people who brought us The Story. Similar to The Story, Believe

has both adult and children’s curriculum which will be made available in the weeks

leading up to our first Believe evening on Wednesday, September14. Once again

we will serve dinner at 5:30pm with the program from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

What we believe drives our Christian lives. The way we behave, the habits

we form, the character that defines us at our core – all are driven by what we be-

lieve. So, how strongly do we “believers” believe our beliefs? Can we articulate

what we believe, and why it matters? Believe is meant to help us do just that.

Believe will help us to answer three significant questions: What do I believe?

What should I do? Who am I becoming? We will spend 30 weeks going through

30 big ideas in the Bible that have been integral to the Christian faith for 2,000

years. Through our personal reading, the video messages, and our large and small

group discussions, we will explore 10 key beliefs, 10 key practices, and 10 key vir-

tues that help us to think, act, and be more like Jesus.

I hope you will decide to join us as together we seek to understand what we

believe about our great God and his will for our lives. Imagine with me our congre-

gation declaring, “We know what we believe and why, and in God’s strength, we

will seek to live it out all the days of our life.”

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Steve

The Music Ministry Team is looking for another willing and available Media Shout Operator.

This ministry involves someone to run our worship slide shows from the Sanctuary sound room during

our Sunday worship services, as well as a variety of other worship opportunities throughout the year

(such as Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday). The slides provide words on our sanctuary

screens for our praise songs and hymns, as well as visual aids for our worship. We currently have two

volunteers (Toni Carlyle and Lloyd Reuschlein) who come each Sunday prior to the worship service to

do run-throughs and make sure the slideshows are in order and correct. (As Presbyterians, we make sure

everything is decent and in order!) We would like to have a third volunteer for the purpose of schedul-

ing and having guaranteed backups. This allows for the others to take Sundays off due to illness, vaca-

tions, or that they may just want to have a Sunday off. Please contact Beth Katzenberger at the church

for more details if you are interested.

Songbirds! Choir will begin their music ministry season with practice on Wednesday, September

7th, in the sanctuary. Practices are every Wednesday evening from 7:00pm-8:30, and the choir meets at

10:00 am Sunday mornings to warm-up and prepare for our traditional worship service at 11:00 am.

We welcome anyone who enjoys singing, and may or may not read music. We sing for other worship

venues throughout the year, and we also have wonderful opportunities to fellowship together (like pot-

lucks!). We sing, we laugh, we pray, and we praise God with enthusiasm! We also have opportunities

for instrumentalists and vocalists for our contemporary worship at 9:00am. So if you play the guitar,

beat on drums, sing, or play an instrument that you may like to include in our worship team, contact

Beth Katzenberger at the church for more information.
