Science Festival 2018

Welcome!

What you have in your hands (or on your desktop if you’re

reading an electronic version) is the lowdown on our fifth

Science Festival. Having started in 2012 with three events

over two days we now have over ten events for the entire

week (no Friday events this year because of INSET).

Most sessions are open to all, but unfortunately some do

come with a cost which is an unfortunate necessity.

However, they are still amazing value. We’ve tried to

introduce some new experiences for this year as well as

gaining some sponsorship from some local companies

which has helped to reduce some of the costs.

Hopefully by the time you’ve flicked

though the booklet there will be

something you (if you’re a student) or

your child (if you’re a parent or carer)

would like to do. It has taken a lot of

organising and the events are as varied

as we could manage.

If nothing takes your fancy then at least some of your science lessons during the week will

be a bit different – dry ice, dissections and electric shocks for instance. We hope that you

enjoy the week and you take away an experience that could have only been gained through

our Science Festival.

Sponsors

Again, thanks to the following companies for their help.

Light Drawing This was so popular last year it will be over two days as lots missed out. We are also reducing the number of people in a session so that the groups assigned to a camera will be smaller. In this workshop you will use LEDs to make light pictures. The cost of the workshop includes having your own materials (LEDs and batteries) at the end that you can take away. There are two different sessions depending on if you took part last year or not, make sure you select the correct session. There will be four Light Drawing sessions throughout the day.

Cost: £5

Limited to: 20 spaces per lesson

Beginner Session: If you didn’t carry out a session last year or you are in Year 7

Advanced Session: For students who have previously taken part in a Light Drawing Workshop. In the advanced session you will be shown some more techniques that you could use in your light drawings.

Sessions take place: during lesson time

Vampires Ever wondered if there is more to Dracula than a pale complexion and difficulties shaving? This talk is a spooky tour through the history of vampires with frightening folklore tales, blood sucking bats and sinister scientific stories. There will be only one Vampire session.

Cost: £2

Limited to: 30 spaces

Session takes place: during lesson time

The Indoor Fireworks Show Is it real science or just flashes and bangs? In this show gunpowder, fuses, bench demos, flames and stage pyrotechnics come together to illustrate a whole range of scientific ideas

You’ll see how science, maths and technology is used to create different effects. Matthew Tosh is, without doubt, the UK’s most popular firework science presenter and the number one choice for schools, colleges, festivals, press and media up and down the country. He’s both an experienced presenter and a professional working pyrotechnician. Matthew’s special effects work is featured in Aardman Animations’ latest film, Early Man. Producer Peter Lord wanted a set of volcanic eruptions in keeping with the characteristic Aardman look and feel. It had to be real and not computer-generated. Matthew was approached by Director of Photgraphy, Dave Alex Riddett, with a request for very specific flame, smoke and debris effects. Following a theatrical volcano project earlier in the year, Matthew stepped up to the mark and scoped out a series of scaled effect sequences to be shot against green screen. The shows are being held at Canon UK’s lecture theatre. Students will be walked around to the shows. We would like to thank Canon UK for the free use of their fabulous facilities.

Cost: £5 for session

Limited to 100 spaces per session
