Spotlight on Members— The New Community College -
CUNY

Established on Sept. 20, 2011, The New Community College at CUNY(NCC) is New York City’s first new community college in nearly 40years, designed to bring together best practices in community collegeeducation in order to improve retention and graduation rates for thediverse community of New York City community collegestudents. NCC will open its doors for its first class of studentsbeginning in August 2012. The New Community College is an openadmissions public institution that accepts applicants who have a highschool diploma or a GED.
The New Community College is being designed to connect fieldexperiences with classroom learning in a structured and supportiveenvironment. All students will begin in a 12-day Summer BridgeProgram to transition them into their coursework. The first-yearexperience program is New York City Centered and will incorporateboth academic service-learning and field experiences for all enrolledstudents. Once students start their major coursework in one of fivedegree programs, students will engage in internships and externships.Teams of faculty, staff and peer mentors will create a rich classroomenvironment, and an integrated advisement program will help studentsstay on the path to graduation.
The NCC is working to integrate a host of civic engagement, volunteerand campus-wide service efforts into its offerings. As our first class of
students enters in August 2012, the Office of Partnerships is workingclosely with the faculty designee for Service and Experiential Learning,to create partnerships for both service learning and experientialeducation. Summer Bridge 2012 will launch with partnerships withlocal museums and professionals, opportunities for workplaceshadowing and a host of other opportunities to strengthen theacademic offerings for NCC students and provide them withopportunities to contribute to the diverse communities of New York
City.

2012 Presidential Election—Campus Election Engagement

NYCC is interested in supporting campus effortsto mobilize student interest and involvement inthe upcoming presidential election. (Please note: these efforts must explicitly and legally exclude any students involved in our Education Award Program or personnel involved in our VISTA

New York Campus CompactAmeriCorps Education Award Program Deadline Extended
Through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and the New York State Commission onNational and Community Service, NYCC has received additional AmeriCorps Education Award Program (EAP)funding for the 2011-2012 program year. EAP fosters civic engagement among higher education students, promotesthe National Service movement, and encourages positive relationships between campuses and communities. The
program meets critical community needs by engaging college students in service as part-time AmeriCorps members,and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility.
Upon successful completion of 300 hours of service in a calendar year, students are eligible to receive a $1,175Education Award to be applied toward outstanding federal student loans or the cost of attendance at a college oruniversity. With rising tuition costs the education award earned upon successful completion of the program helpsmake service a viable opportunity for students with financial need. Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award
The Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award recognizes one senior faculty member each year. Honorees arerecognized for exemplary engaged scholarship, including leadership in advancing students' civic learning, conductingcommunity-based research, fostering reciprocal community partnerships, building institutional commitments to service-learning and civic engagement, and other means of enhancing higher education's contributions to the public good. Theaward is named in honor of Thomas Ehrlich, former chair of the Campus Compact board of directors and presidentemeritus of Indiana University.
The award winner is granted $2,000 and the opportunity to conduct a session at the Association of American Collegesand Universities (AAC&U) Annual Conference 2013. Four finalists will also be featured in a panel presentation at theconference.
Nominations will be accepted from colleagues, community partners, college presidents, provosts, or through self-nomination.

Recommendations for 2012 Newman Civic Fellows Are Now Open
We are excited to announce that Campus Compact is now accepting recommendations for the 2012 Newman CivicFellows awards, an initiative that acknowledges and connects student leaders from member colleges anduniversities. In 2011, when we first launched the Fellows award, 137 students were named. This year, our sights areset much higher because word-of-mouth has spread widely about the awards.
The award honors the late Frank Newman, a tireless advocate for the civic engagement of higher education and oneof Campus Compact’s founders. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are a presidential recognition. Campus Compactmember presidents are invited to recommend one student leader for each campus. These outstanding studentleaders should be individuals who engage in efforts to create systemic change in communities throughout the countrythrough service, research, and advocacy. Second- and third- year students from four-year institutions and second-year students at two-year institutions are eligible. Presidents may nominate just one student each year to receive thishonor. That student will represent her/his institution as part of a national group of student leaders dedicated to publicproblem solving. Students receive an award certificate and an invitation to join the Newman Civic Fellows online network. Third Annual Sillerman Prize for Innovations in Philanthropy (Opento undergraduates and graduate students--2012)
The Sillerman Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy at the Heller School, Brandeis University announces itsThird Annual Sillerman Prize for Innovations in Philanthropy on College Campuses. This $5,000 award for the bestbusiness plan to increase philanthropy and philanthropic values on college campuses is due on March 2, 2012. Aletter of intent to apply is due on February 3, 2012. Applicants can be matched with philanthropy mentors who can discuss ideas on the phone, and do one read throughbefore submission. Faculty and staff at the students’ college are allowed to provide help and suggestions and shouldrepresent not more than 10% of the effort as this is a student competition. 2012 Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement forEarly Career Faculty
Sponsored by the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE), The annual Ernest A. LyntonAward for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty recognizes a faculty member who is pre-tenure at
tenure-granting campuses or early career (i.e., within the first six years) at campuses with long-term contracts and whoconnects his or her teaching, research, and service to community engagement.
The award will be presented at the 18th Annual Conference of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities(CUMU) which will be held from October 13-16, 2012, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. CUMU is a co-sponsor of the Award.

Submission Deadline: March 31, 2012The State University of New York at Geneseo, Siena Italian Studies, and the Associazione CulturaleUlisse at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange are seeking proposals for InterculturalHorizons 2012: Intercultural Strategies in Civic Engagement, a conference dedicated to exchangingideas, practices, and experiences in the development of intercultural competence.
This conference is intended to engage educators and experts from a variety of perspectives in examiningthe challenges and achievements of civic engagement in a global context, and the evolving definitions ofcivic engagement in service learning and general education, with an emphasis on turning theory intopractice.
We welcome proposals from those interested or involved in intercultural education or exchange, fromfaculty and administrators to coordinators and counselors, as well as those active in the fields of servicelearning, language instruction, intercultural or cross-cultural communication, and internationaleducation.
Conference StructureThe conference will include plenary sessions with invited speakers as well as concurrent panel sessions.We will consider proposals for panels or for individual presentations. If an individual presentation isaccepted, it will be combined with others to create a 3-person panel.
Conference ThemesWe are particularly interested in presentations and panels that address the following themes:• Service Learning • Intercultural Competence • General Education • Technology • Changing Definitions of Civic Engagement

CALL FOR PAPERS--SERVICE LEARNING IN THEHUMANITIES
The Fall 2012 issue of the journal Interdisciplinary Humanities will be a special issue on service-learning
in the humanities. The editors welcome submissions of articles, essays, and reflective pieces on service-
learning from various points of view: students, faculty, agency mentors, and higher-education and non-
profit community administration and staff. Documents may focus on studies, theory, practice,
interdisciplinary collaboration, and school-community partnerships as they apply to service-learning. The
co-editors for this special issue are Isabel Baca (University of Texas-El Paso) and Joana Owens

More Information on Interdisciplinary Humanities : Interdisciplinary Humanities is a refereed scholarly
journal, published three times a year by the Humanities Education and Research Association (HERA).
The journal accepts articles that deal with "any learning activities with content that draws upon the humancultural heritage, methods that derive from the humanistic disciplines, and a purpose that is concerned
with human values." Articles dealing with the interdisciplinary humanities or humanities education at all
levels (K-12, college, and adult learning) are welcome, as are creative works of poetry, fiction and non-
fiction that reflect the journal's interests and the themes of specific issues. For more information about

Submission Guidelines: Interdisciplinary Humanities defines “interdisciplinary humanities education” as
any learning activities with content that draws upon the human cultural heritage, methods that derive from
the humanistic disciplines, and a purpose that is concerned with human values. Academic courses don’t
have to be labeled “humanities” to be interdisciplinary. Integrated courses and units are often disguised
under such names as World History, Freshman English, Music Appreciation, Beginning Spanish,
Introduction to Religion, Senior Honors, etc. Integration can range from the use of a novel in a history
course to team teaching to comprehensive thematic extravaganzas that combine the arts, literature,
philosophy, and social sciences. We welcome manuscripts from university colleagues, but also ones that
examine interdisciplinary scholarship and education in elementary grades, teacher education, adult public
programs, graduate seminars, educational radio and television, museums, and historic parks. More
