The majority opinion regard-ing spring break in Tampa leaves most people speech-less. Primarily because their reaction to the idea of staying behind in Tampa while friends and colleagues sip margaritas in Key West or lose their bath-ing suits in Panama City results in a “meh” response.

Sure, the majority of the abysmal Harmony Korine flop “Spring Breakers” was shot in St. Petersburg and Tampa, but that movie only hindered the Tampa Bay area’s affability as a spring break destination by making James Franco give fel-latio to a handgun and striking fear into viewers hearts about the possibility of running into a pissed off Gucci Mane on St. Pete Beach.

Despite the portrayal of “Spring Breakers” however,

Tampa Bay is still a pretty good option for spring break.

Tampa Bay doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not — Miami, Daytona, Key West, etc. — but for those who aren’t try-ing to get lost on the beach for a week straight with no ID, USF’s little corner of the Sunshine State offers some highly tempt-ing alternatives to the tradition-al spring break shenanigans popularized in the news.

Gasparilla Music Festival

Gasparilla is over, but the infectious pirate spirit of Tampa Bay lives on during Gasparilla Music Festival on March 7 & 8 at Curtis Hixon Park and Kiley Gardens. The event, hosted by Sykes, did the unthinkable and booked Modest Mouse as a headliner, essentially disap-pointing 99 in 100 hipsters leaving Tampa for spring break.

For the uninitiated, Modest Mouse barely toured for the

last five years, and is preparing to release their first full-length album in eight years. Besides a strong lineup of artists spread across four stages, this festival also touts an array of delicious cuisine from top local restau-rants and a cavalcade of craft beers.

Strawberry Festival Concert Series

The Florida Strawberry Festival will have already kicked off by the time USF students are packing their bath-ing suits and beer koozies to hit the road, but the concert series won’t be heating up until they’re long gone.

While students can catch Kevin Costner’s band (Kevin Costner & Modern West) on Feb. 28, the real acts don’t touch the stage until March 6 when Boyz II Men performs, followed by John Legend on March 7 and Reba (McEntire)

on March 8.

Wild Splash 2015

Wild Splash returns to Coachman Park in Clearwater for another year of sun, brews and hip-hop on March 7. If the idea of listening to John Legend swoon over babies and strawberries seems a bit tame for spring break, Wild Splash 2015’s lineup of artists includ-ing T.I., Flo Rida, Meek Mill and Shaggy won’t disappoint.

The single day festival is hosted by Wild 94.1 and spon-sored by Bud Light, a vola-tile mixture for Spring Break purists looking to experience one of Tampa Bay’s crazi-est spring break events. T.I. revalidated himself as a top tier rapper last October during USF’s Homecoming week, so it comes as no surprise that Tampa Bay is looking to tap into his talent again during Spring Break 2015.

Nude Nite Ybor City

There’s no need to drive to the beach to get naked with strangers, plenty of people will be doing just that March 5 – 7 during Nude Nite Ybor City. Established in 1996, Nude Nite is the largest traveling nude art show in North America. Nude Nite brings together an array of artists who use nudity in a vari-ety of ways across all artistic mediums.

Don’t be afraid to show a little skin, part of the fun of Nude Nite is becoming a part of the art exhibits by modeling for artists and photographers in special art installations. Artwork representing hundreds of artists will be displayed for sale at Nude Nite — as well per-formers, aerialists, pole dancers and more — all packed into a warehouse on 4th Avenue.

Spring Break in Tampa: What you’re missing

While most Floridians will likely take a trip to the beach or a theme park for this upcoming spring break, going out may not be the best way to spend the vaca-tion.

As Gov. Rick Scott told WTSP, last year Florida tour-ism hit record numbers, with almost 100 million tourists visiting the state, and that number may only get larger this year.

Many Florida natives know how crowded popular vaca-tion spots can get during spring break, and there are dozens of Internet articles and blog posts dedicated to

skipping crowds during this time. Also, eating at restau-rants and renting a hotel room can get expensive, and traveling in general can be a source of high stress.

So, instead of going out, consider planning a week-long “staycation” to avoid the outrageous crowds and costs of a traditional spring break by staying at home.

Staying around the house or on campus during spring break doesn’t have to be boring, though. It can actu-ally be a great way to for-get about classes for a few days. Get ready to invite some friends over and start planning a relaxing vacation week with these four fun staycation ideas.

— Have a movie night at the house or start a TV series with friends, such as the new season of “House of Cards” or all of “Friends,” which just made it to Netflix. The cost of going to a theater can add up after drinks and popcorn, and you’ll probably have much more comfortable seating at home. Besides, it’s a chance to binge-watch, guilt-free.

— Spring break is also the perfect time to commit to finishing a book series with a few friends. While you may be interested in popular novel series — such as George R. R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones,” Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” or Veronica Roth’s “Divergent”

series — you likely do not normally have time to read through hundreds of pages in a week, making spring break a great opportunity to make a commitment with friends to finish a good book or two.

— If you are feeling like getting outdoors this spring break, you can also take a trip to the nearby Lettuce Lake Regional Park, a 240-acre park featuring walking and bicycling trails, canoeing and kayaking rentals, bird watching and fishing located under 10 minutes away from campus.

— You will also probably want to have your eating arrangements figured out for a staycation. If you feel

like ordering in, try using online food delivery web-sites such as grubhub.com and eat24hours.com, which allow you to have food deliv-ered from local restaurants to home. You could also go the cost-effective approach and take a little extra time to develop your cooking reper-toire by planning out several meals to make from scratch.

Staying home for a break doesn’t have to be dull, and it gives students the oppor-tunity to do things they oth-erwise might not have time for. Whether it’s spent snug-gling up with the couch to TV or becoming an amateur chef, it’s easy to stay enter-tained without getting stuck in crowds or waiting in long lines.

Whether it is going home to see loved ones or tak-ing trips with friends, most college students consider spring break a time for rest and relaxation. For the USF women’s basketball team however, the week away isn’t much of a break, as they will be on the court playing to set up a run into the NCAA Tournament.

Instead of going to visit her family in Portugal, fresh-man forward Laura Ferreira will be on the court for a rematch with UConn (25-1, 14-0) after losing 92-50 to the Huskies in their last meeting as well as the upcoming AAC tournament. Ferreira has not seen them since coming to USF for the fall semester and won’t have an opportunity to reunite

until the summer. Despite the distance from

her family, her mind is focused on getting better down the final stretch of the regular season.

“As a freshman, my first time against UConn wasn’t the best, but I’m hoping for a lot better turnout this time around,” Ferreira said. “I think we’re going to do much better… we’re practic-ing with increased intensity to be prepared for UConn’s style of play.”

Ferreira’s transforma-tion into a starter, who has started 24 of 26 games this season, exemplifies the fact that she knows being in a competitive position come March means the hard work from the team all season has provided them with this opportunity.

“It means that our work from day one to the last practice before the tour-

nament turned out to be worthwhile,” Ferreira said. “We’re practicing all year to get to that point and if we get there then we just have to keep setting higher goals once we’re in to be even more successful.”

Redshirt sophomore point guard Laura Marcos Canedo knows that tournament play is where experienced players step up their performance and mentor those new to the team and the style of the championship play that is needed for victory.

Canedo experienced the NCAA Tournament as a freshman and played in the WNIT last season.

“I always tell the under-classmen to play the post-season just like any other game,” Canedo said. “Don’t get nervous just because we’re in a tournament.”

Whether it’s because of the mindset, behavior or lifestyle, college students have a reputation for being a class of humans all of their own.

Between grades and classes, the “luxuries” nor-mal people would consider necessities tend to fall to the wayside for students, who must learn to adapt without them. The average college student’s sleep cycle is typi-cally anything but normal, good meals and exercise are irregular at best and time for family, friends and hobbies is essentially nonexistent.

Spring break, however, offers students a chance to forgo the routine sacrifices of college life and become normal human beings again, even if just for a week.

The first and perhaps most important thing a normal human has and the average college student lacks is time to sleep. The National Institutes of Health even found this group to be among the most sleep-deprived populations.

For students, the phrase “staying up late” has lost all meaning, and finishing a last-minute paper at 4 a.m. is the rule for many rather than the exception. So this spring break, try creating a better sleep schedule by going to bed earlier so you can wake up before noon without setting an alarm clock. You’ll have more time to enjoy your vacation and catch up on sleep before pulling your next all-nighter.

Being a normal human means more than just get-

ting good sleep, though, as the average person ideally has time to take care of his body and living environment instead of letting both slowly degrade beyond repair.

This mainly includes not skipping a meal because class is in 15 minutes and taking the time to cook qual-ity food at home, in which “quality food” does not mean Ramen noodles and coffee is not a primary food group. Take time each evening this spring break to make your favorite dish instead of grab-bing a quick meal at Moe’s or Panda Express.

The typical human, at some point in the week, also steps outside, whether for some exercise or just to get some sun exposure. The same cannot always be said for college students, who are usually confined to a walled environment that better suits the well-being of textbooks and comput-ers. So, make sure to spend a good amount of time out-side or exercising, whether you choose to go biking with friends, work out or just lay in one of the beach ham-mocks outside Castor Hall.

Keeping a clean home is just as important for regain-ing your humanity. Regular vacuuming and dusting, cleaning the bathroom and even wiping down the shelves of the fridge will be beneficial in the long run, and it’s fitting to catch up on much-needed spring clean-ing during spring break.

The last needed step before being considered a normal human again is mak-ing some time for family, friends and neglected hob-bies. Since the average stu-

made team-wide adjust-ments, emphasizing wing play and transition help. Primarily, the rotation on defense and making sure to close out each play are big changes he expects to see after the group gave up a season-high 92 points to the Huskies last time.

UConn and USF (21-5,

12-2) are positioned as the top two teams in the AAC, meaning that the idea of them meeting for a third time this season in the con-ference championship game could give the Bulls yet another shot at an upset. After losing by 42 against the Huskies last game, Canedo and the rest of the team are focused on the scheduled March 2 match-up more than anything.

“I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for us,” Canedo said. “We didn’t play as well as we could in the first game so we get a chance to show them who we really are.”

USF will take on UConn on Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m. before travelling to Uncasville, Connecticut for the AAC Tournament start-ing on Friday, March 6.

dent may only have time for their professors’ lectures, spring break is the perfect chance to spend time with friends and family, and

unwind with a half-finished book or TV series.

With these steps, frumpy, tired college students can take a fresh breath of nor-malcy for a complete week and return to finish their semester almost like new people.

With almost the entire coun-try under a deep freeze or deal-ing with at least a foot of snow, it’s safe to say that we are all sick of winter. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like spring is com-ing any time soon, but there is something to look forward to in the coming weeks: spring break!

Spring break in college is one of the best memories that these four years has to offer. It’s a time for no worries about school, fun, sunshine and time with friends. And for those of you not lucky enough to live in the southern United States, it’s a time to get out of the frigid cold that encompasses the rest of the country.

But since spring break usual-ly happens when much of the country is still cold, it can be difficult to get yourself in the mindset of what you’re going

to need to pack for a week in the warm sun. By the time spring break rolls around, most of the country is still bundled up in their parkas and swim-suits; sundresses and shorts are the last thing on your mind.

Not to worry, though. Wherever your warm weather destination is for your upcom-ing spring break, here’s a list of must-have packing items for girls.

A ShirtdressShirtdresses were really big

on the spring/summer 2015 runway, so they’re going to be really big once the weather starts warming up. Use your spring break trip as a chance to rock this trend early and be a trendsetter.

Most people think of shirt-dresses as a conservative dress look, which probably isn’t the casual look you think of when you think of spring break. However, the shirtdresses we saw walking down the run-ways weren’t the classic, mod-

est frocks we’re used to seeing.Instead, designers show-

cased a twist on this trend with low-cut tops, high slits and drop waists, making the shirtdress a sexy, stylish piece worth adding to your spring break suitcase.

A shirtdress is 10 times more polished and chic than your average summer dress that hundreds of other girls on spring break will be wearing. So step outside the box a little and try out this fun alternative.

Round SunglassesIt seems like there is a new

sunglasses trend every few months, so it won’t surprise you that there is a new sun-glass trend projected for this year. The popular style to try right now is a round frame, similar to what John Lennon would wear in his prime.

There was a huge revival of ’70s trends on the spring/sum-mer 2015 runways and this sunglass trend is just one of the ways in which the ’70s

are back. Round glasses just scream laid-back, mellow ’70s vibe, so be sure to toss this in your spring break bag for cool-girl style that other girls will envy.

A Yellow Bathing SuitYellow isn’t everyone’s cup

of tea and understandably so since it can be very unflatter-ing for certain skin tones. Hear me out, though.

This color was big on the spring/summer runway, but not just one shade of it. We saw everything from marigold to mustard to goldenrod, which means that there is a yellow out there no matter what your skin color is.

And what better way to add some yellow to your spring break wardrobe than with a bathing suit? A bathing suit in an exciting pop of color like yellow is such a fun way to stand out on the beach, so start searching for the perfect yellow bathing suit now.

A Pair of Platform Sandals

One shoe trend that has been gaining in popularity is the platform shoe. We’re not talking platform heels, but plat-form flats that we saw in the ’90s. This blast from the past is a must have addition to your spring break suitcase.

Opt for a sandal style plat-form for a seriously fashion-able look. These shoes won’t be great for the beach, but for the nights when you’re hitting the town, a pair of platform sandals will not disappoint. They’re cool, chic and com-fortable. No one wants to be walking around town in a pair of super high heels, so the platform sandal is the perfect alternative.

Even though most of you are still bundled up in your coats, hats and scarves, don’t forget that spring break is right around the corner. This list of must have packing items for your warm weather trip is just what you ladies need to get your mind off of the cold.

It seems it has only gotten colder and snowier in the entire country since we talked about the must haves in your spring break suitcase for girls, so it seems like the perfect time to continue fast-forwarding our minds to hot sand, cold drinks and radiant sun.

So let’s forget about the win-try tundra we’re all stuck in and talk about the must have items in your spring break suitcase for the boys.

A Pair of Bermuda ShortsMany times on spring break,

you’ll see guys who wear their swim trunks seemingly through-out the entire trip. But guys, trust me when I say that no girl will be impressed with you when they see you strolling through the bar at night still in your swim trunks from earlier in the day.

That means you’ll need an alternative pair of shorts for those warm spring nights. So

give the trunks a rest and opt for a pair of Bermuda shorts instead.

Bermuda shorts were big on the men’s spring/summer 2015 runways. You might be wonder-ing what Bermuda shorts are, but they really aren’t that much different than those shorts you know by the name of Chubbies.

The only difference between Bermuda shorts and Chubbies is that Bermudas are slightly lon-ger, hitting about an inch or inch and a half above your knee.

Shorter shorts are definitely in for guys, so frat stars, rejoice! Pack up your favorite pair of Chubbies or invest in a new pair of Bermudas and wear them as much as you want on spring break.

You’ll look fashion forward and much more clean cut and put together in a pair of tailored Bermudas than any other style of shorts. Try them in a light pas-tel color for a look that is perfect for spring break.A Pair of Wayfarers or Aviators

On spring break there are

always promotional events going on for various brands and more often than not they are giving out free stuff. Among that free stuff is usually a pair of super cheap, plastic wayfarers.

These sunglasses are great for the days where you’re raging on the beach and might lose or break the sunglasses you’re wearing, but you don’t want to be the douchebag who seeming-ly has them glued to their head.

For the times when you want to look like a normal guy, and not some cheap college frat boy, bring along a pair of wayfarers or aviators that you actually had to purchase on spring break. This doesn’t mean that you need some super expensive, designer pair of sunglasses, but buy a pair that won’t break the day you wear them and one that actually offers you some UV protection. Save those free pairs for the beach.

A Pair of Sandals (Not Flip Flops)

A lot of girls take issue with guys wearing flip flops. For some

reason, many women don’t think guys should ever be caught dead wearing a pair of them, but that doesn’t mean all sandals are off limits. In fact, a big trend on the men’s spring/summer 2015 runways was sandals.

Avoid brown leather ones that encompass your entire foot to keep yourself from looking like a dad and definitely stay away from the hiking sandals. Instead, opt for a simple pair of sandals with two straps, one right below your toes and another before your ankle, like this pair found on Etsy.

A Baseball HatBelieve it or not, baseball hats

just got big in the fashion world. That means you have all the more reason to pack one (or more) up in your spring break suitcase.

The sun gets hot in those warmer climates and it’s always a good idea to cover your head from those dangerous UV rays. So why not keep cool and avoid a burn with one of your favorite baseball hats?

A Pair of Classic Blue Swim Trunks

You might not know this, but every year, Pantone, the author-ity on color, decides on a color of the year and a set of a few other colors that are going to be popu-lar for the year. This year, classic blue happens to be one of them and what better way to incorpo-rate this trendy color than in a pair of swim trunks?

When we think of the color blue we think of things like the ocean, waves and other nautical things, so a pair of swim trunks in nautical classic blue is perfect for your days on the beach, in the water and on the boat during your spring break trip.

Plus, blue looks good on virtu-ally any skin color so there’s no reason not to pick one up ASAP.

It’s time to stop thinking about all of this wintry weather and time to start thinking about spring break. Guys, this list has everything you need to put in your spring break suitcase, so get shopping.
